- The Who live at the Isle of Wight Festival, UK - August 29, 1970 -
Description: The Who playing "Young Man Blues" at the Isle Of Wight must be one of the single greatest filmed rock performances of all time, and although it has been officially released several times, none of them sound like The Who live, thanks to badly mixed and mastered soundboard audio.
So again it's up to the fans to present an alternative, and I have spent quite some time working with the best "unofficial" sources I could find to create what I feel is the closest I could get to a proper representation of the band's massive wall of sound. I am very happy with the results, and Pete in particular benefits from the work that has been done with his guitar sound. It is pure proto punk/noise/shoegaze/drone/metal/sludge/doom-heaven!
I have also worked with the colours, trying to make them match the photos we've seen of the night, with a darker and more "blueish" appearance. My "unofficial" video source might not be the best available in terms of resolution, but it's a worthy alternative to the official version (currently available on blu-ray through Eagle Rock), and to my mind a "truer" view of the event. You be the judge.
There is way too little footage of The Who at their peak, so what is out there is worth obsessing about. This is a good starting point.
- Please note that this video and its soundtrack does NOT infringe copyright. This is a fan project made out of unofficial sources. -
This video of The Who should have 50 million views. Easily the most exciting and aggressive heavy rock performance of all time!
Nothing but pure power. Nobody could touch them back then.
and no band in the future
In my opinion they're the best hard rock band ever
Four top notch musicians at the very top of their game, there was simply no one else who came within a country mile of them. As for this rendition of "Young Man Blues", it has to be the most aggressive five and a half minutes of hard rock music ever recorded.
Pound for pound I don't think any other band could match The Who for their raw, unadulterated power and pure energy. Their music was a mix of chaos, anger, and unlimited talent that no band has ever been able to equal, and probably never will. The Who is nothing short of legendary.
I Agree!!!! I absolutely love Roger’s vocals on this!!!! I Never get tired of listening to them!!!
I was 18 when they played there..EPIC!!! Still are!
I think this live show is brilliant! , but other bands from the 70s are as wild live also , deep purple being one of the many 😊
@@petebest22 the who are the kings of heavy metal 🪙
I say Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple 100procent better
The fury of this band is unreal. This is exactly the way rock and roll should be played.
Moon is a force of nature on drums. Nobody could touch him for sheer raw energy.
yes indeed, sir. that speed with total control of both sound and rythm was unique
That and Moon on drums, John on bass and Pete playing lead. There has never been a band that's just hard rock n roll like the Who.
Yeah, only about a thousand or so...Drummer for 45 years...I was there...Ginger Baker, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer, Cozy Powell, all of zappa's drummers, etc etc etc...Love Mooney too; seeing him in this chokes me up, I love him so much.
Daltrey said it was like a jet engine starting the first time he heard him play. "I can play better than that guy."
Keith moon, I simply LOVE YOU
Just a personal opinion, but I think this is the best live performance I have ever seen by any band. I have watched this countless times and it is just amazing!!! This is the template for pure, unadulterated, raucous, on-the-edge-of-chaos rock and roll!
They took live performance to a level never equaled...ever
I've always considered The Who to be the best live band ever. From this performance to the tribute to 9/11 to the last time I saw them live around 2008. The best!
And, the sheer amount of swagger and confidence to open their 70/71 sets with "Heaven and Hell" is just crazy. On stage cold...oh, let's do that number John wrote...
like it's about to explode, but somehow they keep it from blowing it's self apart..
I think I might agree
So many music fans do not understand that unlike Paul Stanley, when Towshend windmills, he really windmills. He tears his fingernails off and there is blood everywhere. You can see it just by googing the images. 04:42-04:46 - in those 4 seconds, Pete demonstrates what rock n' music is about and its purpose. Just 4 seconds. Nothing more needs to be said. That is a man possessed on stage. As he said in The Kids Are Alright movie, when he's on stage, he has no control over his behavior. He's knocked people unconscious with his guitar before, kicked security people in face, etc. As he says, in order to perform, he has to go into a zone which is dangerous. It's the only to get The Who's across.
Nicely put!
John Entwistle, carrying the whole rhythm of the song single-handedly. Kudos
John is playing killer bass, looking like he's waiting for his washing machine to finish.
Unlike many others, he didn't bob and weave and jump around, trying to call attention to himself. Like another great, Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, John Entwistle stood there like a rock and let his fingers do their job.
@@webow88-Supposedly that skeleton outfit was so tight, all he could do is stand in one place! (according to his account)
@@jonbarrett7054 Ha ha! Could be true, Jon. But he didn't wear that costume at other shows, yet he always maintained the same stance. ☺
Mark Kelly
He channeled all of his energy to his fingers.
Yea man, at not one point does that bass get lost amidst Pete tearing that guitar up or Moon shredding them drums. Excellent!
Peter is still kicking himself today for burning all of there live recordings back in the day!
There are no words to describe this performance ! Its total rock madness ! It so good !
in spite of the endless "better and best" clashes among fans, nobody played the drums like Keith Moon. He remains alone in the cathegory
Ironic… Now they’re the old man that has all the MONEY!!!!
Love it….!!!!!❤
does live music get any better than this?? - The Who at their absolute best!
Fuck no, this performance should be shown in schools about rock music
oldtime jam
It doesn’t...
try to listen live version of BAND MAID ;-)
few titles for starter: play, dice, onset
just posted it facebookcouldnt of said it betta myself
This is Punk and Metal, before Punk and Metal.
Can't argue with that
Rock and roll invented 😁
It's why the Pistols covered Substitute. The punks admire The Who,
No this rock
I think it transcends Punk and Metal, but I'm Old School...I saw them when I was 19 and will never forget it.
Pure, unadulterated badassery.
Nicely worded!
Fuck yeah bloody awesome.
Moon put a lifetime’s worth of drumming into one gig for crying out loud. Just look at the guy, flat out from beginning to end. Little wonder he never made it past 1978, this was past human endurance! What an incredible f....g band, the combination of these four guys was the greatest thing to happen to rock music EVER!
I couldn't agree more.
So bloody true!
Yup, Bonham and Moon pushed the envelope in their drumming and lifestyle.
Paul Rodgers wrote a great song about it " Shooting Star "
They really gave it their all!
that's nothing, look at live tanglewood, Keith is a god.
You will never see bands rock like this ever again. Cream, Hendrix, and The Who will always be the best live bands of all time.
Singing solo + guitar solo + bass solo + drum solo = The Who
The only band with 4 front men...
Well said
No one come close to play this tight, loud and alive musically like The Who. Definitely one of the best live performance from that era. Long Live Rock.
bernardino testa absolutely true
Sorry not one of the best. But the no.1 live acts thanks.
Best live band ever!!!!!
the stones 72-73 both where amazing at the time
@popyflower No WHO for you.
The pure explosive drums by Keith will last for eternity
THIS IS WHAT ROCK IS ALL ABOUT. NUFF SAID. NO DEBATE.
Insane intensity
The glory days of youth! I'm now 73 and getting old does indeed suck.
When you can actually hear the volume at a gig. This would have been stunning!
Pete - “Sometimes, I think we are the only band that knows fuck all about rock and roll”.
I Love watching this! Roger’s vocals so strong, Keith’s expressions are great, Pete keeps looking at Keith trying to provoke him and John in that outfit….. Doesn’t get any better than THAT!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
The greatest rock band of all time........absolutely.....
When Pete stomps on that Super-Fuzz and starts windmilling through those Hi-watts almost brings tears to my eyes and makes me want to rip my own face off!!! What a f@&king sound!!! I can only imagine what that must have been like to see/hear in person at the time!
THAT BASS!! With Keith's bass drums!! The earth shook that night!!
The loudest band at the time,my ears still ring.Kids these days have no idea of the power of the old days.......
Get off my Lawn Old Man
Tony Kaye: Deep Purple still have the world's record for loudest concert ... in 1972. Hasn't been exceeded yet. In the early 1970s, the Who were almost as loud. 150 feet from the stage and you were still at stage volume. Or what used to be called the nose-bleed section. Farmers used to complain about rock concert volume and that it was bothering their livestock ... miles away from the concert venue. Jimi Hendrix once said in 1969 in between songs, "We'll be tuning up between each and every song. Because we really care for your ears. I know you think that's ungrateful." I went to a Kiss concert in 1979 (I was 12 at the time; it was my oldest brother's birthday present to me) and my ears rang for about two or three days after. During the concert, my brother and I had to yell at each other so that we could hear each other. In the tourbook, Kiss said that they wanted to give their audience a souvenir ... yeah, like hearing loss. My oldest brother got a button at a Ted Nugent concert in the late 1970s or early 1980s and I remember the button said, "If it's too loud, you're too old." I guess I was too old back then and too old now (I'll be 53 in July).
@@philipclayberg4928 I believe Guinness Book of Records had The Who as Loudest in 1976 Charlton Athletic FC concert en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudest_band - doubtless this has been overtaken since
I remember when this album came out wow it put the WHO in a great live band performing
This is hard rock at it's finest, such a massive wall of sound.
These guys could rock harder than any Metal band.
Diff. Speil.
@Alchemist he's fucking right. they sure as hell could
@@johnnynbk These guys could out rock any 'edgy' metal group.
Performances like this is pure, raw unbridled rock! It outclasses most metal bands today and then.
Seattle 89
JESUS CHRIST!!!!!! I wasn’t prepared for this attack!! Wow!!! HEEEEEEEEEAVY!!! 🔥 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The interplay between Moonie and Townsend is nothing short of astounding. And then you've got The Ox. Somehow keeping the two from going completely off the tracks. Incredible!
Exactly!!! You get it man!
This video is almost perfect--Only being there in person would be perfection.I cannot imagine a performance that defines rock music more than this one.
By far the real "True" GREATEST ROCK N ROLL band of all time !! THE WHO !!
Just a nice band from Shepherds Bush
You have to be kidding me- The ultimate live rock act of all time. It just cannot be any finer than that. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well that song moves right along now doesn't it? Holy carp!
The Who at the peak of their power blew EVERY other band off the stage. Period.
Two Rock Operas!! Need I say more?
All really great and Keith Moon just wonderful !!!
The raw power of The Who in this video is breathtaking. So good in fact I just bought the Isle of Wight 1970 bluray. I MUST SEE MORE!!
I have both DVD and Blu Ray. A word of note: whoever edited The Who's concert at Isle of Wight put the songs out of order. They put the whole Tommy Suite in succession and had it end with See Me Feel Me when, in fact, the Tommy Suite was bookended by other songs. I think they wanted to get some dramatic effect like in the film of Woodstock. They explain it in the booklet that comes with the disc. Still, an amazing example of The Who at nearly the peak of their powers.
Never was a better live band to ever walk the face of this earth, these were plane and simple the gods of rock!!
ragingly powerful!
One of the greatest bands of all time (top 5) and, without question, the greatest and most powerful live band EVER. Literally dangerous.
Absolutely
what a fantastic video. just serious rock jam with 4 of the best rock performers ever. i was 8 months old.
There'll never be another band like The Who. They were way ahead of their time.
Townsend might have been underrated guitar player. He jams with the best
Under rated by whom? He is universally recognized as one of the greats
Why is this so flipping awesome?
Who cares, it just is!
It's like a messy pizza that all comes together to form perfection.
The Who!
I got this DVD when I was 12. After that The Who was my favorite band and I never looked back
THE WHO THE VERY BEST LIVE BAND EVER AND EVER WILL BE.
23theseeker apparently you've never heard of led zeppelin.
The who were better live in their primes.
Bill B is this video in there prime?
@@davidwood9718 the who pretty much always bettered zepplin...
heftosprod lol
Three killers and one very serene bass player. Incredible.
If you watch closely Moon did the whole song with a drum tech trying to repair the kick bass he broke in the first few seconds of the song. Moon points as the drum right at the beginning to let him know that it is gone. Fascinating and incredible! Remember this next time a lip syncer runs off stage at SNL.
The Who are the most genuine image about a rock and roll band could be. It's everything in there.
Incredible performance!!!
50 yrs on and it still get's me going like I young once more. Rock n Rool Baby!
1965 I was 13 yo. when My Generation album was released. The Who was always my favorite band and favorite rock ensemble of artists. Everyone else was a follower imho. Never got to see them live but 55 years later I get to see a video that finally captures the fierceness, energy and raw power of this band. Especially Keith since I'm a drummer and a Moonie!
Thanks for your work on this - it's brilliant!
Something happened to Roger Daltrey's voice in 1970. It became muscular, confident, authoritative. Live at Leeds, Who's Next and Quadrophenia are all stellar performances. Daltrey became a rock God. The band was firing on all cylinders.
1970-1973, what a great time for British hard rock. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple , Black Sabbath, etc.
Yeah black Sabbath
Confounded Bridge I think at least in my opinion that tommy helped roger figure out his part in The Who. I think he realized how he fit finally in a band who went from English mod to full on rockers. Plus he started working out and feeling better about himself. Either way this was when he rose up and earned it for sure.
"To be a mod with curly hair is like having the pox... so I said 'fuck it' Im just gonna be me" -Roger Daltrey.. that would explain the vocal change circa '69 and '70 in the Tommy era.
He said that Tommy changed him and brought out a different side.
Agreed! And Deep Purple with Blackmore does it for me. :-)
Like a freight train barreling down on the rails.
The Who were a mighty engine live.
No one topped them.
You read my mind!
Most powerful and unique band in history!
It's 2022 and this song is even more relevant now then back then
Moon is balls to the wall here on drums! Not just his hands but watch his feet! Theyre moving like a jackrabbit! I always knew townshend could play a mean lead guitar also!
Amazing
Does it honestly get better than this stellar performance?
Raw energy absolutely brilliant..
Greatest live rock band ever
Beyond music, it's a sonic assault with Bass, drums, vocals & guitar as weapons
Entwistle was just an amazing bassist, insanely fluid. Moon was an insane genius of a drummer with such excellent timing and rapport with Entwistle. Daltry had awesome pipes and sang his heart out. While Townsend always seemed a reluctant soloist. Great Rythm guitarist with many skills and gimmicks, but his solos always seemed stilted and hesitant. JMHO Good live video.
No one can beat this kind of energy ! This is incredible !
This is simply the best video ever on showcasing the absolute power of The Who. This sound quality represents the true sound of the band very well.
Puts a huge smile on my face and goosebumps everywhere else.
NO OTHER BAND CAN TOUCH THIS ENERGY ! !!!!
I was there, never to be forgotten ✌
The Who reigned supreme that night
Keith Moon was a genius.
That gig at The Isle of White 1970 was possibly their peak live.
Nigel Filer Tanglewood in the same year is great too.
A million songs by The Who I've heard, and this one, live version, is my favorite.
This is superb. My Generation on Live At Leeds really does it for me.
Absolutely one of the best videos that captures the real feeling everybody had those days! I felt like I was 18 again and at the concert and I still feel like that on the inside I have a fire that burns that deep! I am so happy! Thank you
HOLY SHIT MAN. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've watching the Isle of Wight Festival in full. The Who is the reason I've always wanted to perform on a stage!
KEITH AND JOHN SO SADLY MISSED HOW I MISS THEM THEY WERE BOTH FANTASTIC MUSICIANS IRREPLACEABLE LEGENDS THANKS GUYS.
I have listened to this many times. It is maximum R & B!
It's moving to see Keith and the ox so vibrant...THE GOATS of Rock!
Raw energy of the young man!
There isn't a single rapper that can come even remotely close to this for pure adrenalin and excitement.
Come on. We love The Who. Let's not randomly call out another form of music just to proclaim superiority. There are a lot of hip hop shows that do match this for "excitement", maybe just not for you. The complete line-up of Wu-Tang Clan was completely roaring from start to finish when I saw them. Ditto The Roots. Ditto Beastie Boys. Don't be that guy. No one asked about rappers; you just decided to be a dick.
This is what LIVE is all about. Keith Moon is kicking some ass
Utterly fantastic performance. One of the greatest bands ever. Townsend was one of my guitar heroes growing up.
The definition of musical geniuses in one single night!
Top shelf as always from THE mighty WHOOO!! 🇬🇧🎤🇬🇧👍🎸🥇
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME 🇬🇧
I saw this when I was in 6th grade, now 52 - and i was hooked- this was rock n Roll and I fell in love with The Who !! You cant beat this stuff still to this day !! I Love the raw energy of the band firing on all 8 cylinders !! Dave G chewed this song up bad when he played it during the tribute a few years ago , it was bad ! Roger at his finest , all at there finest !! Thats why I love The Who !!
My god, this is amazing.
Rolling Stones called themselves "the Greatest Rock N' Roll Band in the World"...The Who are the REAL deal
The stones are pop music anyway not rock
This is not Rock and Roll. The Stones are by far the greatest band ever in that genre... this is something else. This is ROCK. This is savage.
The Stones swing and chug and menace and jive and seduce and astonish... the Who plunder and destroy... they are like a beautiful avalanche of boulders thundering down a mountainside, annihilating anything in their path... it is magnificent, synchronized, terrifying chaos...
The Stones didn't release the Rock n Roll Circus until 30 years later because the who totally blew them off the fucking stage
Plus they had Moon.
It's different music.
The Stones are/were sloppy, groovy, loose in a great way.
It's pointless to say which was greater.
Is wine better than cheese?
The power! The intelligence! The righteous indignation! The effing who!
