  • Vienna Ensemble Pro 7: How to and What's New?
    I'm revisiting Vienna Ensemble Pro again with the latest version 7. You'll get to see what's new and offered with VE Pro 7. I'll also go through an in-depth tutorial on setting it up with Cubase. We'll also preview the new Epic Orchestra 2.0. What is Vienna Ensemble Pro? It's a host that can offload the RAM of sample libraries from DAW to a separate computer or even on the same PC. I will demonstrate with one PC but the set up is similar if you are networking computers together.
    OVERVIEW:
    00:30 - What's New?
    02:26 - Getting Started
    04:45 - Preferences Page for VST
    05:23 - Setting Up First Instance of Woodwinds & Brass
    (copy & paste feature, color improvements)
    08:54 - Routing input/outputs of MIDI and Audio
    (midi ports, midi channels, couple/decouple, activating additional outputs in DAW)
    16:10 - Setting Up Second Instance of Strings & Percussion
    (Synchron player Epic Orchestra 2.0)
    18:08 - Multiprocessing Threads & Audio Input/Outputs in Preferences
    22:26 - Displaying Articulation Feature
    23:38 - Automation Panel Improvement
    25:45 - Conclusion

      Yeah you bet Jonathan! Good luck with your template building. It's a bit of a workflow change but again it does makes save times faster, load times between sessions more convenient and you can scale out your studio with more libraries if you decide to network multiple computers together!

    Thank you very much for your help! You are a very good guru! How can you use Vienna Pro for mixing and mastering using very heavy VST plagins?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  3 роки тому

      Hey, I don't mix with VEP but there is a way to... I'm just more comfortable inside of Cubase. Automating inside of VEP is much easier in 7, so it's possible to do a good deal of mixing through VEP.

    Great vid! What does the decouple function do exactly?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  3 роки тому +1

      Decouple makes it so that you can press "save" on Cubase without it linked to the VST instruments. That way, it saves quickly without having to wait. If you "couple" then it will take a while for it to save as it's saving all of the settings for each VST. I would "couple" VEP towards the end of your session, but then leave it "decoupled" for the rest of the time.

    Question for you
    I've been using VE in Ableton each Kontakt instance having about 5-15 instruments within it (so a instance for all brass, one for all strings, etc) and I understood that this helped cut down on CPU. If you're using an instance for each instrument, like you are in this video, are you still getting large templates set up with no issues? I'm going to get a slave computer soon so I'm trying ot streamline this, and your video was helpful, thank you

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  24 дні тому

      Yes it's an efficient way to go. The only downside to this method is it can get a bit messy when revamping the template with newer sample libraries that you want to add or replace down the road.
      I should mention that I don't use this method anymore. I still use VEP but basically have over 100 instances loaded but with them disabled until I call a track up. Then I remotely enable the track on with a cc key assigned as the on\off switch.

    Hi Sohn, thanks for your video. I have to say that I'm still very confused about how VEP works. Would you be available for a paid lesson on how I can set this up in Cubase? Hey Jeffrey, sure happy to help. There are a lot of benefits mainly through being able to swap in and out of sessions using the same VST's loaded either through another networked computer or the same one. It also gives you the ability to scale your VST library and have access to them through networked computers. If you'd like to talk more, then hit me up at my email: lessons@sohncompositions.com

    Thanks for this video. I setup my template like this moving from one instance of kontakt with several instruments. Once I got to around 300 instruments I was getting horrible feedback and pops and clicks like crazy. Each Kontakt instance in VE Pro was at over 90% usage.Once I disabled tracks in VE Pro 7 the noises went away and of course Kontakt instances usage dropped to below 10%. Do you disable/enable tracks in VE Pro? If so how? It’s sorta a pain to have to enable/disable tracks in VE Pro when using them but it works for now. Have seen a few videos on how to possibly do this from Cubase but still not sure how to do it. Thanks again !!!!

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  2 роки тому

      Yes I disable and enable tracks for that reason. There's a really good tutorial from Guy Rowland about it. He sets it up with a note on a midi keyboard, but I set mine up with continuous controller at cc19. If you set the data point at 1, that will enable track and 127 for disabling

      @@SohnCompositions yes Sir that’s the video I was watching. He keeps saying “I setup pad 1” and “pad 2” but never tells us what the pad is. I’m just confused on what in Cubase or on my computer keyboard or actual keyboard controller might be the button or pad that enables and disables those VE Pro tracks. I use Metagrid but it’s on my main computer and all my VE Pro instruments are on a Server computer and I think that might be the issue. I think he’s on one computer.

    • @SohnCompositions

      Isaac, It should be mapped through the automation window inside of VEP pro. If you pull up the automation panel inside of each instance you made in VEP and go to the MIDI controller tab, then select the name of your Plugin channel and map it to a CC. I created two pads (or switches) through my Lemur touchpad. The two pads consist of CC19, set at the data points I mentioned earlier (1 = enable, 127 = disable). You should be able to ma it through touchpad on your metagrid, but you'll need to modify your touchpad and create those switches. Does that make sense?

      @@SohnCompositions are you using a server or just one computer? I remember following your video when I was making my template you were on one computer I thought. I’m using a server computer and all my instruments are on my server computer which is mostly kontakt instruments. For now I’m using Remote Desktop to turn instruments on and off but it’s sorta a pain. It’s what Jason Graves does. Thank you so much for all your help.

      @@isaachernandez7619 ah okay I see what you mean. That would be a bit of work going back and forth like that. Might I suggest trying the virtual KVM called Multiplicity? I use that not for VEP but for my separate video PC that is connected with my composing PC. It works well and as long as you have an extra screen, you can seamlessly switch from computer to computer and try it that way for your VEP automation mapping.

    how do you handle volume and mic position tweaks per project when using a decoupled session so that it doesn't translate to the other projects?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  5 місяців тому +1

      In every Cubase session, I mainly touch volume through
      1) Inside of MIDI (cc10 for panning - only when needed & the other cc11, cc1, cc7 for volume)
      2) Inside of the DAW's mixer fade and pan.
      For mic position... that's something I'm figuring out but currently my setup allows me to affect the Spitfire's stuff and Performance Samples stuff through MIDI cc assigning. So that is done in MIDI for now.

    My million-dollar comment is sync options for TWO DIFFERENT sequencers synced tempo/time sign/etc. through midi in transport sync. to say Cubase and Studio oneor/ Nuendo. VE will show up as a midi sync option in S1 and Cubase synchronization. So play in VE controls both DAWs' Clocks with options to make sections free to change to be un-synced tempo etc. than sync again. Think everything through. VE will need midi connection options via midi controller/keyboard.

    • @SohnCompositions

      Do you often write with two sequencers at the same time? I think that's a cool proposition, but I don't know if I'd need to write in two different sequencers at he same time. Or do you mean on two separate rigs?

      Sorry for the late reply, your comment slipped right past me. I'm not sure how that'd if you already have two computers connected together. Is that how you're running Cubase? with 2 licenses? I would imagine, they'd work still but you'd have to make sure the midi routing is pointed to VEPro and not to a VST system link port.

      What DAW are you using? I'd recommend looking up how to use VEPro 7 with your DAW as Cubase has a certain way to find the VEPro 7 VST. Try to find the one that is VST3 version (usually called Vienna Ensemble Pro).

    would disable tracks in cubase be an easier alternative?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  Рік тому

      There are tradeoffs when working that way as opposed to VEP as a third party sample host. The main reason I do it this way is to save on hard disk space as Cubase session files get fairly large when you add in hundreds if not thousands of tracks in the project, when loading Kontakt instances natively in Cubase. Whereas, with VEP it will keep the Vubase session file size to a minimum.

    Am I correct in saying that, in Cubase, you can't have an Instrument track sending MIDI to VE Pro, and have the audio return to the same track? The way you're showing requires two tracks per instrument (one for MIDI and one for audio), with all of the associated clutter and double-naming, etc. But I would like to have one track for each instrument, not two. I would like to have the Instrument track send the MIDI to VE Pro, and then have the audio from VE Pro come back to the same Instrument track. Pro Tools has been able to do this since version 7, back in 2007. It's kind of baffling that Cubase (and Logic I think) can't do this in 2023. I don't know much about Cubase, so please correct me if I'm mistaken. Thank you.

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  9 місяців тому

      You can but there are limitations doing it that way. Cubase's instrument track can not select different MIDI ports in VEP so you can do only do 16 channels for each port , and in consequence each instance in VEP. To take advantage of using more MIDI ports that VEP can offer in the pipeline, you'll need to use Cubase's MIDI tracks. At least this way, it's more stable you'll use less instances in VEP.

    • @gdugan2

      @@SohnCompositions I have Cubase Elements 12, and this is what happens:
      I create a stereo Instrument track and put VE Pro on it. Then I create more Instrument tracks. On the new tracks, I would like to send their MIDI to VE Pro, but am not able to. There is no MIDI OUT, as there is in Pro Tools. However, if I make some MIDI tracks, I am able to send their MIDI to VE Pro. Then I "Activate Outputs" on the VE Pro track, and in the mixer, I end up with two tracks per instrument - the MIDI track and the Aux track.
      Maybe it's a limitation on Cubase Elements, but I am not able to send the MIDI from an Instrument track to VE Pro. It's only possible with a MIDI track.

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  9 місяців тому

      @gdugan2 I can't speak for Cubase Elements, but on Cubase Pro you can send midi data to VE Pro using an instrument track. I should correct my previous reply saying that you can only connect to one VEP instance at a time with an instrument track though, so ideally one midi port and one midi channel can only connect to an instrument track per instance of VEP. I mentioned earlier that you can connect up to 16 channels, that can only be done via midi tracks inside of Cubase.

    • @gdugan2
      @gdugan2 9 місяців тому

      @@SohnCompositions Thank you for your reply. I can do that in Elements too. One Instrument track can connect to one instance of VE Pro and one MIDI channel. A second Instrument track cannot connect to the first instance of VE Pro.
