      purists look away... the looks are indeed sublime, as was 246..I would love an affordable, easy build GRP replica / conversion of a crossover between 308 GTS and 228 GTO - a more subtle and smaller 288 with everyday worry free mechanicals and c 300bhp/ton --or simply a 308GTS replica (with wider footwell!) - needs to be in expensive / accessible :) - I was lucky enough to see a stunning one off replica at Stoneleigh a few yrs back with RV8 ..absolutely amazing..unfortunately the driving position remained compromised - using wheel arch extensions as in 288 would help with avoiding footwell wheelwell ingress
      An affordable 308GTS clone with a TVR engine for hassle free motoring....mmm

    Hi, I have a 1976 308 GTB and have had a similar noises at certain revs. Drove me mad but on mine it was a hairline crack in the exhaust heat shield on the rear bank of cylinders. Then I got another crack in the heat shield under the boot floor (deeper noise) and finally a high pitched tingling/whistling noise (like yours) that was the front heat shield protecting the alternator. Spent ages sorting crack/splits etc in heat shields and finally they've given up and gone away. We isolated each one by taking each heatshield off and seeing if it stopped the noise. Reving it in a workshop just didn't replicate it. Stick with it as 308s are the most underated Ferraris and when you've got it sorted you'll love it. I've had mine for 21 years now and have experienced just about everything that a car can throw at its owner. They are very fickle but very, very strong.

    Same whistle sound on my 308 that I kept for 3 years without problems. Mine was also a single exhaust. Leave it like this mate. It's pre-bling Ferrari. For me, the best part of this engine was to open the right window and hear the carbs sucking air through the right fender intake ! A very special sound that I loved and only on that model.

    sounds like a vacuum leak to me, that would only happen under load not on gradual acceleration, or perhaps a vacuum regulator after distributor makes maximum advance so that too much vacuum doesn't damage the diaphragm

    • @eskamobob8662
      @eskamobob8662 4 роки тому +4

      Agreed. Sounds exactly like when the vacuum advance diaphragm on my distributor got a leak. That would also explain while it's only on full throttle

    • @Dundertaker1
      @Dundertaker1 4 роки тому +3

      p_r_i_m_e does the 308 have a full throttle position sensor and system? Then I’d trouble shoot that. Vac advance would be possible as stated...etc... my suggestion always is you have to get the car in spec and all maintenance caught up to really sort out a car. I.e. of it needs a top end refresh..you’d probably fix most issues when you change out hoses, vac lines, clean or replace fuel lines, adjust timing, etc...otherwise you’re chasing your tail. Coolant flush via overheating is one way of doing regular maintenance...;)

      Not to sure about your thoughts on air leak on full chat. You’ll get lower manifold pressure on closed throttle high rpm over run conditions.
      Best bet is to get it to your nearest rolling road once lock down is lifted.
      But great content. And an interesting noise. Cover the basics first. Think simple.

    • @AdamDUrso

    • @simonorr594
      @simonorr594 4 роки тому +1

      Agreed also - the noise only seems to be under load, so I don't think it's just related to engine speed like an alternator bearing would be. Also, those pipes perish, and the car is from 1981 by the reg. plate

  • @gregorysinclair4873
    @gregorysinclair4873 4 роки тому +2

    I had a similar squeak in my Porsche 993 in similar conditions to yours which puzzled me and quite a few professionals. It went away after I removed and reseated the intake manifold, so believe it was a loose hose clamp at the intake side. Worth re-seating everything on the intake side before replacing anymore parts. All the best with it.

    Mmmmm, as someone who has been playing with cars all his life - including professionally for a number of years - I have a suggestion: relax. When the car boils over or a coolant hose pops or the alternator bearing seizes and the car throws a belt, don't flip out. If you don't learn to take things in stride, you're going to have to become an adrenaline junkie to enjoy the 308 (alternatively you could just become a regular junkie and hook yourself on valium...) :-p
    Remain calm. At least until you hear a loud bang at 6000rpm followed by clanging and large volumes of gray smoke and bits of piston and rod billowing behind the car. Then flip. That would be justified.
    BTW, the Influenzo was not trying to burn your face-off. It was a joke. It wanted to see you bang your head on the underside of the bonnet. It boiled over because the horns aren't in the engine compartment on the 308, so it likely would have not scared you if it had only beeped the horn.

    Brilliant video and one lucky escape. The joys of motoring ‘as my father use to tell me’. The sound could be belts to tight, the alternator can also make a whistling noise, both when new and when there getting tired. It could also be a vacuum hose leak, maybe a split hose, for the most part that wouldn’t make a noticeable difference to performance. Good luck and look forward to the next video

    I had a 75 308 GT4 for over 20 years. Did all the maintenance myself. Very reliable car, as good as any other 15-35 year old. after 18 years, the fuel consumption got worse. Worn float needles. I chucked them up in my drill press and dressed them with a stone, worked great.
    Set the float levels a bit higher than specified (1/4"?)- eliminated the fluffy throttle in curves (this had disappeared when the needles started leaking).
    Most important: I bought one of those carb ballancers to set the butterflies, but found a 5/16" ID length of vinyl tubing stuck in the ear was more accurate. Been trying to sell the ballancer ever since.

    Hi Jack - loving your Influenza videos - very informative and very entertaining too. I have a possible explanation for your squeaking noise as a similar thing happened on my Porsche 997.1 C4S. It sounded like a slipping belt and only happened under load at high revs. I changed belts & idler pulleys, the water pump and even the pulley on the alternator - none of which cured the problem. The guys that do my servicing eventually tracked it down to a cracked exhaust bracket that was resonating/rubbing together at high load/high revs. £20 spent on some tack welds cured it and it’s never done it since! Maybe a simple one to check if only to rule it out? All the best. Mike

    I chased a similar noise - not on a Ferrari- for the longest time. It was only audible above a certain rpm. In the end I chased it down to a bearing in the alternator. I dont no whether its possible to run your Ferrari briefly without the alternator running, if you could it would either eliminate or pinpoint the noise if it is coming from the alternator.
    The 308 is one of the prettiest cars ever made. Good luck with yours.

      If your having cold start issues, it will be the SAD on the back of the distributor SAD = supplementry air device, usually the rubber tube perishes and fucks it up, I used to set the throttle up by hand after working on them for years as a kid. 650rpm with air screw closed then open up to get 950rpm. It will run like a dream and no stalling out.

    Not sure if you got an answer on the whistle but my brother had a 1977 (fibreglass bodied) carbed 308 and it made exactly the same sound. I am pretty sure it was induction whistle. I love the sound of these engines. I have been listening with my stereo turned up! The injected cars didn't make the same sound.

    As she will never behave if you continue to call her that name that I shall not mention. She deserves a name more fitting. After all none of this is her fault. You are her caretaker and technician, not her protagonist. Oh and this time round, be sure to christen her with a females name. Once you have that sorted, don't forget to greet her with politely hello ___ and goodbye _____.

  • @justaddafan

    What a great video! (1) I totally agree that modern cars just aren't as much fun to drive slowly. I've noticed this more in German cars. I think they have made the car so capable at high speeds that this stability ruins them under the conditions that we normally use them. (2) extreme highs and lows in emotions. It sounds like you own an Italian car. Passion one way or another. (3) I LOVE to hear that car running. What a wonderful, raw sound. And the click-click from the notchy shift lever, it's great. In watching you drive, I almost feel the car myself. It looks like such a wonderful experience. (4) The whistling noise is related to throttle position, which makes me think it' may be a normal noise from airflow through a carburetor or potentially there's a small vacuum leak that only opens when under high vacuum. Or more likely there's a hose that collapses under high vacuum, causing a whistle when air is pulled through it.

    As for the noise, I don't think it's a bearing, because it's pretty unlikely for a bearing noise to be load-dependant. It almost certainly has to be induction-related. Have you tried taking various hoses and bellows off one by one, and then trying it (I'm guessing not, as we're not allowed out! But when we are, that's what I'd be doing).

    Before you run a 308 bleed the radiator every time. Cap off and slacken the screw at the top of the radiator until you see liquid. This is the same on all 308s that are accelerated hard as the water pump atomizes the water. There is a mod for this done by Barkaways of Kent. I have raced my 308 for 13 years with great reliability.

    Running better all the time. Carb balancing is always fun! The whistling sounds like an air leak. Maybe vacuum or a leaking intake or exhaust gasket possibly? Glad to see you still have a face. Yikes!!!

  • @ktriebol
    @ktriebol 4 роки тому

    One possibility for the whistling sound at 4,000 RPM under full throttle only could be a worn bushing around the carb butterfly shaft, allowing external air to enter thus causing a whistle. Wiggle each butterfly shaft by hand to see if there is any play. If that is the cause, fixing it will improve the air/fuel ratio as well.

    The boiling over will probably be the rad fan sensor not working. Then the pressure builds up blowing from the rad cap. Maybe add an adjustable sensor so you set when the fans kick in. If it can fit your car. You didn't run it long enough to damage it

  • @jonlsl
    @jonlsl 4 роки тому

    Could be vacuum leak. But since it's on full throttle... It would be vacuum created by ported vacuum. So if the car has ported vacuum. Check any thing on the car connected by ported vacuum. Not manifold vacuum.
    Could be a very slight exhaust leak from a leaking exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust manifold or a small hole in the muffler or welds.

    If it makes you feel better, it only boiled over because the engine had stopped. True enough, it would have eventually done it with the engine running, but it's the fact that it stopped pumping coolant that caused it to tip over the edge. Obviously it was still too hot, but I don't think you were quite as close to needing surgery as it seemed! It also suggests the coolant is circulating well, as it was the circulation alone that was keeping it from boiling up.
