  • Matt Farah from Smoking Tire announced he has bought a Ferrari 328, did he miss a tick by not getting one of the earlier Ferrari 308s which many argue are prettier and truer to the original design?

I own both a ‘85/308Qv and a ‘89/328. Ok..so here’s the rub: they are different enough that I love both equally for different reasons. I bought the 328 first, and if you can only have one, the 328 is the superior car. 308 has the Classic raw sexy 70s look & 328 has a more restrained elegant look. 308 is more photogenic so most say it looks better. 328 has to be seen in person to fully see its elegance. 308 looks like a baby 288gto & 328 looks more like a baby BBI Boxer. 308 interior is better until nighttime when the 328 console switches light up like Tron. If you want the closest thing to a 328 but like the looks of 308, get the QV...galvanized body and 32valve. 308 is a timeless classic and will always be more beautiful. The refinement of the 328 were necessary changes and it is a more sophisticated and elegant car. The 308 is Marilyn Monroe and 328 is Audrey Hepburn. You can’t go wrong with either.

Had a glass 308. A good strong engine, but otherwise a bit rough. Had been raced and crashed. Sold it, bought an injected QV GTS. Sold that for a 328 GTS. 20 years later still have it. Mid seventies now. Still love it as much as the day I bought it.

I love them both. My sentiment leads towards the 308 as I grew up with Magnum P.I. But the practical part prefers the 328. But to be fair, in the very beginning of Matt's video, he specifically says he wanted that exact car since he was a little kid. So the answer to that question is yes. He undoubtedly made the right choice regardless of the comparisons and places in history the two cars occupy.

Agreed. The front of the 308 is better (especislly the QV). Same with the door handles. Conversely though, the rear of the 328 is much better, specially in how the rear bumper & exhaust look completely integrated rather than afterthoughts that were added in last minute. So it’s kinda of a tie. If the choice were mine, I’d go with the 328. Bigger engine, updated everything, I suppose, and, inevitably, “newer”.

To me the 308 is the 'purer' design. The 328 just looks like a 308 with a body kit.

Great video, Jack! I had many of the same conclusions when I went out shopping for my 3X8. My heart really pulled me towards a late 308 GTS QV, but a lot of the local Ferrari people said that the 328 is basically the 964 of Ferraris - the one that always stands out as “one of the best cars they’ve ever owned.” At the end of the day, I decided to buy the car that made the most sense for me - a local car (no shipping) that I could inspect, and that has been cared for by my mechanic for over twenty years. It’s a 328GTS much like the one you filmed. Have to say, the parts I perhaps didn’t like as much (the front, the switchgear) have grown on me since I’ve owned it. It was the right choice for me, but if it had been a local 308QV, I probably would have been equally as happy!
Keep up the GREAT videos! You helped get me through the pandemic with your content.

That looks like quite an interesting 328.
As an "F" reg its one of the last non ABS cars which means it might be an "88.5". To accommodate the ABS they had to alter the suspension a bit & the ABS cars have a slightly different (wider) track/geometry set up. The 88.5s had this suspension set up but without the ABS & without the Convex wheels. They seem to be amongst the most sought after 328s. ABS cars although only made in the last 15-18 months of a 5-6 year production run account for nearly half of all 328s in the UK. Some of the ABS 328s have Bilstein shocks under them as well.
Also a lot of extra leather in that car, All the leather round the rear screen & under the dash & on the centre part of the dash round the gauges is non standard. Its usually fabric at the back & black vinyl on the dash.

    • @augnkn93043
      @augnkn93043 2 роки тому

I thought there were 3 levels of leather
      1) seats, door cards & console
      2) seats, door cards, console, rear parcel shelf (joke) & roof ( my car, definitely more desirable than (1) due to horrible fabric used in the uk which stains)
      3) looks
Why would you not have ABS & anti-dive? just for the looks of the concave wheels?

  • @timgosling6189
    @timgosling6189 2 роки тому +3

The main change to the handling was that the 328 came as standard with 16" wheels. The 308s had 14s with XWXs but many have been updated to 16s, which gives you a better choice of tyres. The teardrop mirrors on the 308 look great but tend to droop, as are yours! It comes down to whether you prefer the overall smoother drive and greater power of the 328 or the sound of the carbs. 308 brakes are a bit rubbish but get very much better with EBC pads, but that's true of the 328 too. I'd just go for what was in the best condition.

That is one beautiful car. Looks like it is a euro spec which is even more desirable, something you don't get here in Australia. As you also say, each and every car will differ from one to the other to drive and feel. I remember when I worked for Rolls Royce. We had one car out of all the Silver Shadows that we serviced, that stood out from all the rest. Very strange but true. I also think that you can't go past the sound your car makes from the intake, a noise created by eight separate Butterflies and the pulsation of eight piston, something you will not get on a fuel injected car. Thanks for the post, it pulled on my heart strings over the 328GTS I had five years ago, but very happy to watch your post.

I agree about the engine....in fact when I raced a 328 with my 308qv there was hardly a difference. I then realized that all of that power occurs at redline where very little time is actually spent. The steering on the 328 felt a slight bit lighter to me.

FWIW I know Donnie Callaway and he's done a phenomenal job of bringing Matt's 328 back to a state of effectiveness and reliability that likely most 328's don't enjoy. A solid mechanic can make that big of a difference. I prefer a more powerful 308 QV car - such as the restomods sporting uprated 3.9 liter engines, brake upgrades, etc - over a 328 body configuration.

Another brilliant production Jack and fascinating comparison. And so pertinent to me as I am about to have a 328 GTB delivered imminently. I considered a 308, 328 and 348. I decided on the 328 for a number of reasons, based around various owners' ownership experiences and Ferrari specialists who maintain the cars that I received, covering maintenance and upkeep, and driver experience. The 328 being the last 3*8 model off the line is ultimately the better and most sorted car overall with a more powerful engine to boot. However in terms of looks, the 308 is the purer and has the classic 70s looks. So for me at least, the decision boils down to 1) best driving experience and relatively easy maintenance vs. 2) purer 70s looks. I decided I want the best driving experience from the more sorted car so have gone for the 328. The 328 is also highly proven as many are raced in the Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic series, they are really pretty bullet proof little cars. Just to add that the 348 is another step up again (and I do like them very much), but I just couldn't find a decent RHD car for sale as many have neglected history and/or condition, plus they are 355 money to maintain and can cost an arm and leg if they go wrong - so here the 328 wins again for me. What exhaust has your pal Steve got on this 328? It sounds glorious! Brilliant job again Jack - keep up your great work!

@@marcolucchini8173 That is what a new model is all about. Improvement on the first model they bought out. I wouldn't expect anything else but improvement and the 328 is just that, an improvement on the model before it. A 250 GTO drives like a dog compared to a modern day Ferrari. As any modern car today will drive better than a T model Ford. Thank god they don't make cars how they used to. I suppose it depends on how much you love the smelly bits, the history of your old car and some people do and prefer the smelly bits and admire the old body shapes. I know, you have the best 328 model released. The last year the 328 was produced, a very sort after car and a very beautiful car all round. I had a 1987 328 GTS, not patch on your 1989 328. There's a good chance that the difference you feel in the steering, is down to tyres. Make and model can make a huge difference. What bushes is in both the steering rack and the suspension, also makes a difference.
As for the "sharper off centre" is more than likely down to small differences in the alignment between that 328 and your car.
Breaks again depends on pad choice etc. Fluids and so on also matters.

I also like how the 308 and 328 had hints of the 288 GTO and 512BB styling and then Ferrari took hints of 512TR in the 348.
They somehow made each new model individual, interesting and exciting yet retained that family look so you new that each new model was undeniably a Ferrari.

I bought the 328 this year from 85, so no ABS with the beautiful rims. If I could choose, I would like the interior of the 308, since it has this more classic look. But if we remind ourselves of the 80s, especially TV, synthwave, Knight Rider, Miami Vice, the plastic interior with the little lights for the heating really screams 80s.
To the comment about the steering spacer, I bought one, but don't need it. I'm 1,74cm +- and really was surprised about how far to the front I had to adjust the seat to push the clutch to the bottom. The leg is stretched to 100% while pressing it. I know I'm not tall, but what are smaller people doing? I can imagine that taller people profit of the spacer, had two friends test it, who are around 1.85m. They still drove it comfortably. So results may vary I guess.

There is a little anti dive dialed into the front suspension on the 328. I believe the displacement is all in the stroke / crank

Cosmetically, I can't help but notice the addition of the overhead spoiler and the slight ducktail, which both spoil the clean lines for me. However, the impression is that the 328 is a much more refined car, as you would expect ...

The overhead spoiler seems pointless to me. Mines red as is my 328. Maybe better than black. I would remove it if it didn't leave holes. Just an afterthought by the looks.

there are 3 versions of the 328.
    1) convex wheels
    2) concave wheels with the anti dive suspension
    3) concave wheels with the anti dive suspension and abs
to work out whether you have 2) or 3) you need to look at the shape of the brake fluid container. or just remove the fibre glass wheel well floor and look at the abs computer :)
Having said that what size of steering wheel spacer should I get????
also make a video about how you fit in the car with the roof on!!! lolz

But the Best difference Jack? you hold the steering with the Most able hand n the gear level with the Least able hand, how it should a been all over the world n a huge argument I had with a German in a motorway cafe in Germany in 1972 when he said to me we do everything wrong in England till he picked a pen to write something with his Right hand Not the left then I said do you pick up a hammer with the left hand too as You hold the nail with the right hand to hammer it down? so who is right mate us or you? lol after that we left in a bit of a hurry I really hate LHD cars, its Not natural for most people as they are right handers cheers another great video mate

308 GSTQV looks prettier than the 328 IMO, 308 has the benefit of a nicer looking interior with the 70’s console switches and front and rear ends have a more classic shape/styling. However if you have the chance to buy one either looks better than almost every car on the road.

I own a 328 GTS from 1987 and recently took it for a 3-day road trip again. Lovely car to drive! But beware of wet roads! Because the nose of the car is so light, these things tend to understeer a lot in the wet. The same is true for 308s, by the way. I like the exterior of the 328 better, as it looks more complete and elegant to my eyes. But the interior of the 308 definitely has more charm. However, I am 6"3 and barely fit my 328 with the roof on. I have recently tried the same thing in a 308 of a friend of mine and it was impossible to for me to fit properly behind the wheel in that car. So the ergonomics in the 328 seem to be a bit better for tall drivers. I love the pure and unfiltered driving experience these cars provide.

I think what you are feeling in the steering and cornering differences come from the change in 328 wheel and tire size. I think the 308 looks trimmer and more compact...the 328 looks heavier and ponderous in comparison. I would also guess that Ferrari tweaked the suspension settings and upgraded many other aspects of engineering.

In most cases no matter what car we are talking about the first generations are the best looking while the later one’s styling gets compromised but they tend to be better sorted. In short, a car’s styling evolution is typically inversely proportional to it’s engineering improvements.

I'm a home mechanic, so I should take a 308... definitely do not like the wheels on ABS 328s... however they are probably much too refined for me.
I prefer a Fiat X1/9 with a souped-up engine. Now, if they'd only not rust that badly... would save me lots of work, beside the money, too.
But Jack I'm a bit jealous, you got to drive them both. I only got to drive a 308 once, and that was years ago.

I'm curious if you noticed a difference in the feel of the clutch pedal. I have a Mondial 3.2 (basically the 328 drivetrain) and I was surprised how light and easy to use the clutch was after hearing about how driving Ferrari's of this period was like using exercise equipment. Mine also has fabulous brakes, which doesn't really match what your experience of the 328.
Interesting you didn't notice a real difference in terms of power. Maybe the 328 has more weight?

Just revisited this video... I think the amount of work Matt has needed to do on his car may hold an answer. Not that the model was the wrong choice but perhaps the particular car. Here in North America, the 308 were always compromised by the emissions equipment of the day. So the 328 with updated catalysts and engine management bridged the gap between what your models and ours.
If I recall correctly, a 328 made some unplanned appearances on Magnum PI. Perhaps the producers thought no one would notice. Also, they confused the Audi that Higgins drove. But the differences were more obvious there.

  • @Petrospect

Isn't the 328 along with the Mondial the most reliable classic Ferraris of that period.
That makes it quite attractive to me. Something that will just...work lol
But the 328 is the forgotten 80s Ferrari, overshadowed by the Testarossa and Ferrari's other attempts.
A reheated 308 that actually looks a little better imo.
Think I like how much more modern the interior is aswell.

Could all the difference in the steering feel be simply down to the tyres?

    • @michaellorenson2997

Yep, it certainly could. The lower profile tires on the 328 should feel sharper, but apparently do not. That suggests the tires are fundamentally less responsive.

I always saw the 328 as an evolution of the 308. It's in a lot of ways a 'superior' car, but should be because it's an updated version of the 308. They're both good looking cars...but I'll always have a preference (slightly) for the 308 purely because of Magnum...Interestingly, the 308 is in National Lampoons Vacation, driven by Christie Brinkley, but when she returns in Vegas Vacation, she's driving a 328...I like to think she traded up between movies rather than a continuity error :)

The 308GTB's brakes aren't the best. I drove one in the 80's and after some spirited street driving they were smoking once I pulled up.
The gearbox was nice and it handled quite well though it did feel quite heavy. All in all an ok drive but not something I'd spend that sort of money on these days.

People who service Ferraris tell me the 328 drivetrain is more-bulletproof than that of the 308 - engine-temperature management is better, the radiator/fan combo is better at keeping the mid-engine cooler, the power delivery is better, and the car has more HP/Torque than the 308 engine. Everything is more-refined.
