  • I decided to shoot this video with an old JVC Mini DV camcorder. I bought this camera approximately 20 years ago. It definitely gives a very retro and outdated look!
As I mention in the video, this camcorder never seemed to work right from day one. I always found the images to be very grainy and poor quality. Heck, I think I have seen VHS home movies that look better than this. It's amazing how far the technology has come in a couple of decades.
Mini DV was definitely the most popular home video format in the early 2000's. These camcorders (or palmcorders) were everywhere. I speak a little bit about the history of mIni DV in this video. I also talk about how video cameras were so expensive back in the 80s, and how it was always my dream to have one, but I could never afford it.
Also, I speak in the video about the importance of digitizing all of your old home movies. I would do this sooner than later. You do not want to lose all of those precious memories forever!
Mini DV was one of many home movie formats that came along over the decades. There was 8mm, VHS-C, VHS, High 8, mini DV and so many others. A number of indie films were actually shot on mini DV back in the day.
Have you ever shot video on mini DV? What do you think of it? Did you think it was any good? Do you still have your mini dv camera? What about all your old home movies? Are they still in storage? Feel free to leave a comment!
On this channel I post videos relating to retro and vintage technology. Things like cassettes, CDs, old cameras, laser disc, radios, TVs, DVDs, home recording gear, Radio Shack, microphones, mixers, synthesizers, drum machines, video games, and so much more. If this is your thing, please subscribe!

There may be something off with your camera. I have a Sony Mini DV camcorder and while it shows its age, the picture quality is very acceptable and way better than the footage you are showing. Interesting to mention also is that MiniDV handles 48 kHz/16 bit sound, so theoretically better than CD quality (in practice though not so much…)

My mother payed $5,000 for a Sony camcorder back in the early 90's. She still has it to this day.

Your camera seems to have some serious issues unfortunately. A decent Mini-DV recording should have a quality almost as good as DVD, and even the worst ones would be way better than VHS. What you show here looks more like the video from 2005 mobile phone.

Going with what everyone else has said, the picture quality of your camera is absolutely awful. I've had a very ancient VHS camcorder from the late 80s that gave much, much better quality than this video. I have a Sony MiniDV camcorder from 1999 and it's picture quality is excellent by SD standards, comparable to DVD even, so yours has some serious issues.

OK... that video looks bad, there are old camcorders from the 1980's that did better video then that.
