  • It is no secret that I am a huge fan of the Sony ICD UX570 digital handheld recorder. As I have mentioned before, I love how reliable and useful this thing is. I have used it hundreds of times since I first purchased it in 2020. It has never let me down.
I also love how this device is so extremely versatile, and can be used in so many different ways. I have used this device for video work, podcasts, original music productions, digitizing analogue recordings and many other tasks. Considering that I bought the Sony ICD UX570 for around $100 brand new, I have definitely got my money's worth!
I have a playlist dedicated to this mighty little recorder. Please feel free to check it out. I will put a link to that playlist at the end of this video. I have one video where I have done a general review of the ICD UX570, but I also have several how-to videos explaining how to use its many features.
In this video, I show how you can adjust the input type on this recorder. On top of the device, there is a jack for an external microphone. By the way, the two internal mics on this thing work just fine, but of course there may be certain situations where you want to use an external mic, especially for video work.
I have had people make the comment "well, if that jack is intended for a microphone, you CANNOT input something like a tape deck! Your recordings will sound so distorted!". Not at all. You can very easily and very quickly adjust this setting, so that the recorder can accept line input. The possibilities are endless...you could input pretty much any stereo source. Radios, tape decks, turntables, reel to reel, VCRs, you name it.
I will also mention again that I am not being endorsed by Sony. They have not paid me in any way to do this video. I am simply making this video to showcase a recorder that I absolutely love. It is one of the most reliable and flexible pieces of gear I have ever owned!
The Sony ICD UX570 is also good for general voice recording, dictation, or interviews, if you happen to work in the media. There are numerous internal settings that will optimize the recorder to do its best job in any given scenario. Big rooms, small rooms, face to face interviews, you can choose any setting accordingly. Also, if you are a university student who needs something to record lectures, this thing would work great for that situation!
Do you own the Sony ICD UX 570? What do you think of it? Is there another similar recorder that you think is even better? How do you use this recorder? Would you recommend it?
On this channel I post videos relating to retro and vintage technology. Things like cassettes, CDs, old cameras, laser disc, radios, TVs, DVDs, vinyl, VCRs, home recording gear, microphones, mixers, synthesizers, drum machines, video games, and so much more. If this is your thing, please subscribe!

The way it works is that a pad is applied to the microphone preamp when you select line-level audio as an input. This is a nice feature to have and one that sadly lacks on my Tascam DR-05X. Digitizing analog material on a portable recorder is definitely doable. Note that these devices measure a lot worse in terms of noise and distortion than even a budget audio interface, but they still outperform cassette tapes and are fine for anything other than archival-grade tape transfers.
