  • In this video, I take a look at the stereo system that I used in the 90s and beyond. It was nothing fancy, but it provided me with endless hours of listening enjoyment! Many stereos from the late 80s and early 90s looked like this.
This is the Panasonic SG-D16. This was a very popular stereo that was a strong seller during this era. It had a dual cassette deck with high speed dubbing, AM and FM receiver, turntable and the option to run a CD player into the AUX jack. It also came with two little bookshelf speakers that were not very strong, but more than enough for a small bedroom like mine.
The CD player that came with this stereo was actually my very first compact disc deck. It worked very well, and I still own it to this day. Actually, this whole stereo is still in storage at my mother and father's house! The cassette deck worked fairly well, as well as the receiver.
The real weak point on this thing was the turntable. It did not sound good at all. I get into more detail about this in the video. It had a very weak and thin sound. And did you ever use high speed dubbing back in the day? I recall it always gave horrible results. I found copies done with high speed dubbing always sounded very tinny, shrill and faded.
Of course, many stereo systems in the 70s and into the 80s were very component based. All of the pieces, including the amp, the receiver, the tape deck and the turntable were all very separate. But in the 90s there was a move away from this. Many stereos looked like the Panasonic SG-D16. They were pretty much an all-in-one unit.
These still pop up on the second hand market, and you can find this model (along with other stereos very similar to it) at various thrift shops. I still have fond memories of this stereo. Watch the video as I go over all its great quirks and features.
Did you have the Panasonic SG-D16? What did you think of it? Did you like it? Do you still own it? Did you like this style of stereo system? Feel free to leave a comment!
