Yeah, I was a little older than that and I can tell that the experience was totally new.. A large leap from all other popular games.
I was 20 years old back then, and, yes, the graphics were considered to be great. Dunno about "close to life like" though. I don't think so. Graphics were better on PC back then anyway.

The beta starting menu with that BGM is so much creepier than the final version.

So cool to see what they tweaked. I like how the portrait room used to look like :) Plus it looked like they wanted you to go back and forth between Jill and Chris which sounds cool.

That was great - I always felt the brightness made the game even creepier.
Loved the random Sandwich drops, crying 😂😂😂 "Yeah, yeah... Sandwich" has me dead everytime!

So the Hunter introduction scene that we saw in the final game (after you return to the mansion from the guard house) was in fact created for the beta scenarios... and then... they modified everything in the final game BUT they leaved the Hunter running scene unchanged ._.
They escaped to the mansion,
where they thought it was [Sandwiches]...

I just realised @6:25 is the Jill Sandwich Scene, but as we can see in the Background the ceiling of the room where jill was traped has come down and is revealed as a full room sized block. now correct me if i'm wrong but when i remember right there should be no space above the room to store this stone block, right?
I think Forest's "revival" from Director's Cut was going to happen in the original release. Otherwise his corpse would be pre-rendered like Kenneth's.
Kenneth's corpse wasn't pre-rendered. But that was actually a nice touch Capcom gave us though.

so the final release it was decided to turn down the graphics so much that sometimes youre not even sure what youre looking at, while the prototypes were crisp and clear.... understood

they look brighter and cleaner.
Adam Rothra It's just it looks like there is extra detail that wasn't there before.
Xyloblast You get improved graphics but at the cost of less zombies on screen along with less detailed backgrounds for certain areas. They decided to sacrifice details for a improved framerate and more enemies onscreen. A good comparison is the Resident Evil 2 beta footage.

I can only guess that adding more weapons in the game caused problems when making the switch weapon algorithm and being lazy they decided to keep the pace slower for the sake of suspense.
