I've played Guild Wars 2 since its release at twelve years old. If any of you are looking for not just very involved gameplay, lemme say this now. There is a huge and thriving roleplay community there too. Yes, I actually said *roleplay*. I'm a part of it on the NA side. There's just as large a community on the EU side. And if you're looking for a vet's experience of the game itself, like I said, I was 12 when I started in Guild Wars 2. I'm 23 now and I still love it. That should say some stuff. Hell, I'll replay story just for the hell of it, that's how much it means to me.
I was looking for something like that. I started playing last month but players don´t seem to interact with each other, especially veteran players to new players.
Still play SWTOR, but mostly for the story and other solo content. Used to raid a bit, but nowadays I often dont have time or even mood. In my opinion, SWTOR is primarily "single" player story RPG, wrapped in MMO. I think that if somebody is big Star Wars fan, they should definitely try it. In many aspects its something of a copy of WoW, (combat for example, classes/specs) so if you played WoW, you should feel like at home. Also many players like to joke that apart from stories, fashion is the true content, to which I must say, I never had so much fun just collecting outfits, and dressing up my characters, in any other game, because you can see your fancy outfits in story cutscenes, where you character stands and moves in various poses, makes expressions, fights... Group content like raiding is still quite decent and there are active raiding guilds, and its often no problem to find people spamming LFG, and PvP is also pretty fun
True. Sadly I havent played SWTOR in a long time now, but I played the shit out of the game in 2022. The story especially the eternal throne storyline hooked me. Then this combined with the aspect of dressing up my character, and walking around in "lobby" seeing other peoples cool characters, was pure enjoyment. Sadly the repetitive combat, and yeah.. the new expansion kinda made me quit for now. But this game will definitely always be in my heart lol
I get back into it every once in a while and wholeheartedly agree with you. I love the freedom of narrative choice you get with the game and the story does hook me enough to keep playing for a while but the gameplay just turns me in other directions after a while.
Glad to see GW2 on the list. As someone who's played since 2 weeks after launch and with over 30k hours invested, it has held my attention for over 10 years now. I tried BnS, Archage, and a few others, but I always come back to GW2, in large part because there's no sub fee, and once you buy the expansions, you have the content permanently unlocked. Not to mention, there is no traditional questing like "Do A to get to B" type situation that many games have, and this game promotes exploration and makes it fun.
And you are not left behind if you stop playing. I came back to it after about a year playing other stuff and with the expansion out. I can finish what I was doing before (Aurora) and the expansion content is there waiting for me to unlock its perks whenever I fell like.
@@Witiok1992 It will be interesting to see what Arenanet would do if NCSOFT tries to force an Eastern style financial model into GW3? I can only hope that Arenanet will have the willpower to say NO. I think that Arenanet’s business model is the most player friendly in most ways, but I know that Arenanet gets criticized for its black lion loot boxes and ecto gambling. I don’t have any problem controlling what I spend money on, so those things don’t affect me.
Gw2 didnt age well imo. I had 3k hours in gw2 but switched playing ff14 for last 3 years. Now looking back at gw2 it looks so messy. Even Wow is somehow better looking to the eye.
If GW2 had controller support it would be WAAAAAAAY up - I adore ESO, and with good reason, but GW2 is absolutely a masterwork IMO, but falls short in accessibility, ESO has full and excellent controller support on all platforms - this is huge. Both games are outlandishly good in their own ways but only having PC/mouse support is a huge bugger
@@MalikATL It's not about skill - I play mostly kbm and have for decades. But bc of FFXIV's stellar controller support, I learned how to play (most jobs) with controller. Especially if I'm doing grindy/easy/repeative content - gathering, hunt trains, fates, island sanctuary, alliance raids, bozja - I swap over and give my wrists etc a break. I've been taking a little FF vacation in GW2 and have found myself wishing GW2 had solid controller support too.
Basing the population of a game on the searches of the title on google is .. highly questionable to say the least. We are used to higher quality in your videos than that. Very disappointed.
Switched from WoW to GW2 a long time ago. Came back to GW2 after a year and resumed right from where I left off. It is one of the great things about the game. Now with the expansion, there’s more QoL stuff to unlock and I can’t wait to finish my current objectives before I hop on the new content. This feeling of not missing out is really good and allows you to pace yourself, especially as we grow older and have kids 😂.
For some months now, the only GW2 content I've been playing is weekly raids with the boys....other than that I haven't made progress at all and I'm still fine xD (should get back to do SoTO story, though...haven't done that yet either)
You have never played it if you think it’s boring. That combat is absolutely something else, the only game (because it ripped it from just like other systems) that’s similar combat is ESO
@KogaSoda2 So I'd assume you didn't reach level 80 cause if you reached it, you'd never ever said that. GW2 has level 1 to 80 as a form of tutorial to unlock features gradually to players without overwhelming them, it takes around 10hrs to reach level 80 and you never level up beyond that level again, masteries on the other hand can be leveled up but they unlock extra features for you which you can choose not to invest in them if you don't need them at all. So imagine someone who didn't finish the tutorial of the game and saying that it's very boring.
@@IbnBattutaEG i have got two level 80 characters and have first two expansions. While the combat is the best, it completely lacks any sense of progress. The fact that you only get to farm for a weapon for years in order to get a 10% stats increase is a huge turn off.
Nexon, who make Maple Story, have been fined $9m for manipulating the drop/success rate of the loot boxes in the game and also stating a max level upgrade was available as a possible drop but game actually had zero chance of dropping said advertised upgrade.
@KogaSoda2so many players say this and it’s really just the people who are nostalgic about a simpler time in their life/childhood. Any long time vet/player/current player disagrees with the sentiment. Current Reboot is better than PreBB ever could have been. Maple wouldn’t have survived this long without BB. Times are different. No one under 30 has any interest in the Korean Style grindy MMO with no direction.

on a positive note: i am glad ESO could recover that well this year, it shows they come back when listening after such a down. big 3 are hard to crack rn, but if they for once could sort out their pvp quality (and maybe finally drop the old consols for that among other reasons), i could see it get on 6-4 even, if everything else fits as well.

Awesome video as always. i would like to add something else to the OSRS portion that i feel you missed. Ive played alot of mmos and OSRS has got to have one of the best wiki's of any game i have ever played. The wiki support team is on top of it and has so many guides and more information then most mmos combined.
I have to agree with some of these posts about GW2 and ESO. I have several thousand hours in both games, and for me they are the best overall. FF14 was a bit boring for my taste.
Would be cool if you actually made the list for the West. it doesnt matter how much korean player numbers manipulate the numbers of lost ark, the game is dying in the west and will soon be dead, kinda similar story for maplestory. I just think that these 2 games being so popular in Korea shouldnt influence a list made for the west, as the popularity doesnt matter for anyone outside of that country Otherwise good video
my favourite is probably ffxiv and WoW as the combat in both games works well and the worlds had a cozy feeling to me. if WoW fixed the issues that create player hostility then it would be fantastic.
If WoW would stop developing and designing content around streamers and "professional players", a lot of that hostility would probably go away. But I don't see that happening.
Wows google trends gets boosted by classic, and classics gets diminished for the same reason. Also, with the different types of classic wow servers(era, wotlk, hc, sod) further skews the results.
TLDR - if MMO game has monthly fee sub then forget playing it for free. You will miss a lot. Free is there to get new players hooked and to sub. Those who play only for free are just coming and going never staying long run
sad to say that ESO will not grow much, with many newer MMO coming soon from Korean, the player base will eventually shift to newer games, i was once a hardcore ESO player, i completed every single map and there;s only a handful of MMO that can keep player around like WoW does, and eventually we need to move on to newer games u can never play a MMO for 10 years and not get bored at all.

Took a break from MMO's for the first time in nearly a decade and went ham on Cyberpunk 2077 for a few months, totally wicked fun game that but just dived back into FF14 and its hard to beat the good old MMO vibes
None of them report active users so we can't see how many one has but we can see how many they have relative to one another, which is perfect for sorting by active players
defs final fantasy 14. i have over 4000 hrs in the game. started on console and moved to pc.if you play on console i suggest getting a bluetooth keyboard cos you will be typing a lot especially if you make friends which is a definite XD
I'm not at all surprised by OSRS being this high, but I just don't understand why people aren't willing to give rs3 a go. The quality of life and PvM are better. I do agree their monitization is a joke but playing ironman has been one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a video game, and the QoL changes make it so much more fun imo.
It's just so complicated and off putting as a new player. So many screens, things to unlock, the mtx is just all over the place and it's hard to know what to do next when the game is telling you to do about 20 things. Even as a Runescape vet, I find it difficult to play. It doesn't hold my attention.
ESO failed me when they moved to world scaling. You'll spend 100's of hours leveling but will never feel powerful as the enemies level with you. Not fun for combat
World scaling is phenomenal. By 100s of hours, you better be way above mobs. Mobs only go to CP 160. That's maybe a week tops if you are super casual and only play half an hour each day.
I don't care one way or the other. I play Star Trek online, and will probably keep playing it until the server shuts down. I Really don't see the appeal in WOW.. but hey, whatever floats your boat...
Still waiting for the "WoW killer" lol. I started playing during Wrath and quit at the beginning of Shadowlands. Then I started playing ESO but stopped a few months ago to play Starfield, then Phantom Liberty, and now NMS (which I am loving). Been thinking about going back to WoW though.
hi all which of the two have the least must to do dailies like a chore as usual so u wont get behind when player feels like to play semi competitive, eso or ff14? tia (im afraid of dailies i have a full time 12 hour shift)
Can't speak for ff but eso you don't really have to keep up with pretty much anything for solo content or pvp, I've been playing my mage character for 3 years now on and off and just barely reached champion rank 300, I still do well in pvp and have a habit of soloing high end content that requires a group for the sense of accomplishment 😂
SWTOR is a solo rpg that happens to have the MMO activities , it's honestly my favorite one. It just lacks a bit of content now but if you love pvp like me you will have things to do in late game. Also the drip is real in this game and combat is among the most dynamic and enjoyable
I love ESO, I play it like a single player game where there are other people running around. The stories are mostly really fun, and they keep improving the game, even for people who don't buy the expansions or the ESO+ subscription, and that's really good for the health of the playerbase. I love, especially, to use UI addons that lets me remove most of the UI with a toggle, so I can run around the game in first person like I did with Skyrim. In general, I recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether they tend towards singleplayer or multiplayer, as long as they like fantasy. Then you can have a good time with it!
I love ESO because of the housing system mainly but one thing I hate about the game is how most builds force you to use a staff for dps. It's really immersion breaking seeing players in dungeons and pvp all using staffs for dps. I'm not a pro or ESO expert but when I did play few years ago it seemed then that was the case. If I knew it was different I would probably load the game today and restart my account. Other than that I'm enjoying the heck out of swtor.
@@SpartanWarrior76 I run a solo build that's dual wielding an axe and a dagger, and I've been doing just fine! I think they've balanced it out a bit, now there are tons of caster builds that just runs on pure stamina, so they don't use staffs at all.
i also play ESO mostly as single player game, i want to do 100% at every zone. I found that 2 time per year they sell crown cheaper so i bought the 21k and got almost all DLCs with that. no ESO+ needed at all.
OMG giving me flashbacks to my middle school/early high school years when i would download and try any and every MMO i heard about on my shitty fat dell... settled on WoW and runescape when i upgraded from that potato. shocked and yet not at all shocked to find maplestory is still bumpin'.
GW2 is a horizontal experience, once you get lvl 80, it's as high up as it goes and it doesn't take but 10% of the games to reach the end game content.
I wish WoW would do a re-release but with modern good looking graphics. Still love that style of combat and all that. Could use any recommendations for something that would be like that
Stop saying that the sub of ESO is optional. Playing without sub is so painful when it comes to inventory management that you might as well play with a cube up your butt.
Just stop trying to pick up everything. It was a headache to break that habit, but it made playing a bit easier. If you want to be a craft/farm tryhard, then you’re going to need to sub. But it is optional
i have bdo on ps4 but like u said its grindy asf ngl i wanna purchase sum shit to raise my level is that still possible? (im level 56 with 120 ap and 100 dp)
Lucky Ghost I see you make a lot of MMORPG review and recommendation videos. Do you think you could make one where the goal is to recommend mmorpgs for people who are looking for quality one to play that isn't pulling nonsense with limited time content? I've had to abandon games that I otherwise have continued to love (Destiny, New World, etc) because they started doing limited time content, most egregiously story content that gets removed, like seasonal quests.
Studio investors: "nobody wants old-school MMORPG's or RPG's, they're too outdated, it's just nostalgia..." WoW Classic, Eve, ESO, SWOTOR and classic style RPG's like Pathfinder, BG3 and POE: Oh really? 🤨🤨
The ten year anniversary for SWTOR was also its funeral. I have never seen a patch screaming "ready for maintenance mode" so hard as 7.0. They turned off all the mechanics that kept the game somewhat enjoyable. As well as consolidating the classes, removing the need for making new characters. This was not a mistake, it was a planned move for the "afterlife". Making further engagement psychologically impossible. It is still doing well for a mummified husk though. Powerful brand name. Even after so much time with mediocre to bad treatment of the franchise.
or limit them to you know... cosmetics, xp boosters, dlc/expansions, ect? prefer the option to choose sub vs dlc since most sub but i prefer to buy the dlc like in ESO.
I have played a lot of MMORPG games over the years and my absolute favorites are Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. The communities in both where the best I have encountered in any game and a hell of a lot of fun.
that's more then fair I won't argue that one, it's a shame because honestly it's not a bad game either only issues you'd likely have is the lag but other then that I enjoy it.I encourage everyone to give it a try at least once. @@sallee132
Eve is a beautiful game as it is, the problem lies with CCP making the game extremely grindy and requiring you to have multiple accounts. $20 a month per account. It’s a certified second life.
what game are you playing then? I just recently jumped into ESO for the first time in my life. Currently champion level 270ish. And for all this time i've been playing there's never ever been a single zone in which i haven't found another player. I mean every single zone has people on it, I played the DLC zones (wrothgar, murkmire, etc) and the starter ones and there was people running around in all of them, including delves and such. So no, there's plenty of people at all times.
@snnn2535 on on it at different times a day on different platforms and it's empty even my guilds have hardly anyone playing anymore no matter what time of day it is.
Old school Runescape's combat system is definitely a bit clunky however i would argue end game PVM and top tier PVP is more difficult and indepth than any other MMO
Where do you get your info? Pretty sure FFXIV is still more popular than World of Warcraft. I never see people outside of city hubs in mmo but ffxiv is always full of people in every zone, every bit is content is done, etc. Also I see you used google trends but that's terribly inaccurate... there are no concrete numbers and it's based on peak interest of series and the lowest it's been... honestly terrible metric.
Play 14 on the wrong data centers and you’ll see some real ghost towns. Especially after the data center travel was added, some servers are almost abandoned
@@Supernovamutt I only play populated servers in any game I play, and even the most populated servers in WoW don't compare to Aether's popular servers, espec for raiding content and the like, always way more group finders up on FFXIV than retail WoW at any given point. Every map has people doing FATEs, even content from 10 years ago and so on. Only other game I maybe see this sometimes in is Elder Scrolls Online but they use no servers and there's often world bosses untouched there where all world bosses are taken down immediately in XIV.
Yep. No telling who is number one because google trends do not equal active player counts…just general internet interest. Wow has been trending because of lawsuits in the past, for instance. If Johnny Depp was an MMO he would have the top spot during his Amber Heard trials. I watch a lot of streams for a certain game, but I’ve been unsubbed for months and months from that game. Only actual numbers released by the company will tell you what you need to know, everything else is anecdotal tarot reading nonsense.
Umm no older expansions unless you standing in limsa ff14 open world is dead ...i bet money you can't go through a single shadow bringers zone right now and find 15 players. I played 14 for 4 years and it's basically a raid simulator with instances for every single major encounter. Every one just ques for stuff while standing in limsa...I'm on aether as well.
Great video! Can you put up a video of games people are really excited to play? Me and my community are always getting on between Starbase, Star Citizen, Archeage Classic, and Rust.
Just wanna say, Lost Ark can be played on Xbox (and probably PS) using GeForce Now through the Edge browser. I game for hours every day and had no idea this was a thing.
DAOC Dark Age of Camelot is still a fairly populated PvP/RvR based game, and there is also a game called Return of Reckoning which is a remake of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning which actually has some good population as well. I realize they do not have the population as most of the games on this list, but I'd bet for the RvR/PvP based players these are still some of the best and most viable games to play out there. That's just my opinion though.
MMOs must strive to cater for casual gamers, and that is the success formula. Casual and hardcore content that progress as far as they can go. BDO seasons will be why it goes up and down, for casual players tend to only level during seasons. Lost Ark lost players due to the high-level raids, and hence players would pay gold to other players to finish raids. WOW will be king for they made sure to add different types of raids and different types of gear, so casuals can simply do an LFG and access new zones.
I played SWToR+FFXIV over 10 Years. 2024 im only looking for new MMORPGs like Thron & Liberty and Blue Protocol. Maybe i will test Test Tarisland and Perfect New World too.
As if the number of players matters when no matter what MMO you play, most people are solo players. By the way, you forgot the two oldest MMO's: Ultima Online and Everquest, both which still exist and have plenty of players.
@WyMustIGo the title is most played mmos. This list includes the most played mmos. Ultima online and eq are not among the most played mmos. You should know this without someone telling you but? I guess now you know. So the title is 100% accurate
Given that the list has some pretty obscure maintenance mode and even offline MMOs, I was surprised to see it did not mention City of Heroes which came back online unofficially in 2020 (publicly at least, it's been secretly online almost since it went offline), and officially back licensed out from NCsoft in 2023; and while it's almost certainly not top-10, it's doing better than half the list in this video.
TBH, I played WoW retail several months ago and it is a torment to find a group for raids. I have waited on full server for about an 2 hours for full party.
Good video, but I wish the facts were a little more competent. 12:00 - "The only MMO to come close to this amount of registered users is WOW". Incorrect - Runescape has over 320m registered users, so not only did they come close to Maplestory, it has been surpassed.
Imagine a new mmo taking the best parts of some of the best mmos and other games now and blending it all together in one perfect game. Lost Ark style combat, rollback netcode for pvp goodness, ff14 storytelling style, gw2 mount system, WoW raid and dungeon design, survival game level of building, super engaging lifeskilling just imagine mini games for each profession like cooking mama but for all professions, ff14 level of role playing, and of course the good ol' /pizza command to order some delivery
I play ESO from time to time since 10 years and WOW non stop since 18 years. I tried most of the others, bur these two are the only ones I could play. ESO for immersion and story, WOW for the pleasure of pushing the buttons and pvp.
When new world came out it was very good because of the whole people pretty much controlling everything as far as the auction house and area ownership goes, the pvping in the game is definitely top tier also. But if they had added mounts in the beginning of the game or hell even a month or two after release it could’ve saved a lot of people from hopping off like myself. People kept asking for it and what’d they do? They made it a paid dlc, after everyone stopped playing.
not enough chase cosmetics, chase mounts and other things to collect that typically keep players logging in after they hit max level. Until they resolve that and the fragmented population (way too many, and way too small servers) its going to be tough for them to improve retention
Wow - stand around to queue, ffxiv - super cringe community. Gw2 - ngl the art hurts my eyes haha. New world - weapons are copy paste of stronger variants. Osrs - mobile rhythm game. I’m tempted to go outside at this point

Sadly the repetitive combat, and yeah.. the new expansion kinda made me quit for now. But this game will definitely always be in my heart lol
Broadsword seems to hate the pvp scene because is a mess.
SWTOR was awesome. Started with alpha and beta tests and played for a very long time. I sometimes head back when new content is added
I can finish what I was doing before (Aurora) and the expansion content is there waiting for me to unlock its perks whenever I fell like.
its trash
what do you do so much? i leveld to max and then the fun was over.. i played pvp & so on after that for sure, but nothing got me interested

@@Witiok1992 It will be interesting to see what Arenanet would do if NCSOFT tries to force an Eastern style financial model into GW3? I can only hope that Arenanet will have the willpower to say NO.
This list is not acurate, that number "10" is not accurate its google trands not player count.
If GW2 had controller support it would be WAAAAAAAY up - I adore ESO, and with good reason, but GW2 is absolutely a masterwork IMO, but falls short in accessibility, ESO has full and excellent controller support on all platforms - this is huge. Both games are outlandishly good in their own ways but only having PC/mouse support is a huge bugger

yessss! If they added controller support and released on consoles it would be soooo goood!
I play gw2 on controller and it feels great
Basing the population of a game on the searches of the title on google is .. highly questionable to say the least.
I had so much fun leveling and exploring all the classes in gw2, unfortunately I didn’t like much fractals compared to dungeons in other mmos.
10k hr in FFXIV , 8k hr in GW2 100% ruined my life 😂
10k and 8k? Unbelievable but since when? I got 1000k on gta online since 2020.

Nexon, who make Maple Story, have been fined $9m for manipulating the drop/success rate of the loot boxes in the game and also stating a max level upgrade was available as a possible drop but game actually had zero chance of dropping said advertised upgrade.
They did the same with Dungeon Fighter Online
@KogaSoda2so many players say this and it’s really just the people who are nostalgic about a simpler time in their life/childhood. Any long time vet/player/current player disagrees with the sentiment. Current Reboot is better than PreBB ever could have been. Maple wouldn’t have survived this long without BB. Times are different. The wiki support team is on top of it and has so many guides and more information then most mmos combined.
He missed a lot on most these games you can tell he doesn’t play most of them lol
I have to agree with some of these posts about GW2 and ESO. I have several thousand hours in both games, and for me they are the best overall. FF14 was a bit boring for my taste.
I switch between Albion, Maplestory and WoW when big patches come out and it keep me entertained for whole year.
This is exactly what I do, the only 3 mmos I could ever get hooked on.
Would be cool if you actually made the list for the West. it doesnt matter how much korean player numbers manipulate the numbers of lost ark, the game is dying in the west and will soon be dead, kinda similar story for maplestory.
I just think that these 2 games being so popular in Korea shouldnt influence a list made for the west, as the popularity doesnt matter for anyone outside of that country
Otherwise good video
my favourite is probably ffxiv and WoW as the combat in both games works well and the worlds had a cozy feeling to me.
if WoW fixed the issues that create player hostility then it would be fantastic.

- clunky tab target combat

ESO failed me when they moved to world scaling. You'll spend 100's of hours leveling but will never feel powerful as the enemies level with you. Not fun for combat
They only scale to C160 though
World scaling is phenomenal.
By 100s of hours, you better be way above mobs.

Glad greedflation on eve backfired
@charliecordes3532 good to know thanks for the insight. Probably going to load it up soon and come back
i also play ESO mostly as single player game, i want to do 100% at every zone. I found that 2 time per year they sell crown cheaper so i bought the 21k and got almost all DLCs with that. no ESO+ needed at all.

#13, SWTOR is 95% single player, yet is an MMO, which killed it for me and my friends.

That tells you how few players are playing city of heroes I guess?
TBH, I played WoW retail several months ago and it is a torment to find a group for raids. I have waited on full server for about an 2 hours for full party.
kinda weird, even in such list, to not even mention the fact nexon exploited the players of maplestory? i wouldnt recommend that.
Good video, but I wish the facts were a little more competent. 12:00 - "The only MMO to come close to this amount of registered users is WOW". Incorrect - Runescape has over 320m registered users, so not only did they come close to Maplestory, it has been surpassed.
Great point! I'll add that in the future! Thank you
It’s better having servers for each country/language! That’s why WoW is the one where I made most friends in.
Eso story "telling" is peak MMO. But the lore and story itself is just lame compared to WoW and FF14.
I wish someone in these companies would buy and bring back rift, so much unused potential smh
Wow - stand around to queue, ffxiv - super cringe community. Gw2 - ngl the art hurts my eyes haha. New world - weapons are copy paste of stronger variants. Osrs - mobile rhythm game. I’m tempted to go outside at this point
I wish to see larger amount of Top games, because like Top ~15 is over and over the same and I would like to check even older MMO's that are still alive...
