    In Lithuania we have one skin care brand called “ŽIEDĖ” that puts their products in glass bottles and when you use up the product you can bring the glass bottle to a pharmacy which solds that brand and you get a discount for a new product and the brand collects bottles, sterylize them and refill with new product and put on shelves for others to buy. I think that’s the most sustainable eay to sell cosmetics that I heard of. 😊

    Loofas can actually be from plants! There's a plant called a loofa plant that literally grows loofas, no need for plastic or sea sponges.

    I don't think Hyram understands that in bar soap the oils, butters, and fats are transformed by a chemical reaction when mixed with lye and are usually no longer a risk for clogging pores. The oils and butters are saponified and transformed completely into soap. So yes they have oils and butters in them that by themselves aren't good for cleansing BUT once they are saponified that's not the case. But, the cerave bars are really nice anyway. The Drunk Elephant one is insanely overpriced. Never heard of the other one. In order for them to make a less drying stripping bar for your face they will create the ingredients specifically to hit a certain PH and saponification naturally produces glycerine so that will give a bar soap natural moisturizing properties. They can also add a small amount of extra fats to the recipe and that will create a little more moisturizing properties but its such a small amount that its not enough to cause pore clogging especially since its in a soap formula. Its very unlikely you will get clogged pores from the fats in your soap bar. So, I think the Meow Meow Tweet face bars are just fine for cleansing your face if you please. My background is in both Esthetics and soap making.

    The concept of concentrated products isn't just using bars. There are companies making tablets and gels which you add water to at home. I can't see this coming to skincare anytime soon since water hardness varies and tap is definitely not sterile, but it's a thing for cleaning products and hand soaps.

I recently saw an advertisement for these strip concentrated laundry detergent so look really good. I do you have a few concerns about concentration if people don’t dilute, but you’re right! If people follow manufacturer directions that’s actually a great way to get concentrated products to a person that is less expensive, less taxing on the environment, and probably cost less in shipping as well! I so appreciate you bringing this up and helping me understand these things a bit better! Love you!

    I wish sustainability enthusiasts would talk more about the actual COST of these products. In most cases (not all though), sustainable brands are very expensive and are not affordable for many people. I definitely understand that often these products take longer to make and that it is not free to have eco friendly packaging, etc. Not to mention the supply/demand chain and the fact that a lot of sustainable brands are smaller businesses (again, not all). But I just can't help but feel like especially in these current times, many of us can't afford a $40+ moisturizer or cleanser, but we still want to have nice and healthy skin. I think this is a big problem throughout many areas of the sustainability/eco-friendly movement (food, clothing, etc.) that needs to be addressed. I guess the key is that more people need to understand the need for sustainable products, which would create a bigger demand and perhaps lower the overall cost of them.

      shelbi acknowledges this in almost every video she does. it's a privilege to have access to all the sustainable options! in her videos she talks about how we should focus on other steps of sustainability we can incorporate in our lives like REDUCE and REUSE. not purchasing something is as effective as buying the sustainable option. we can go to thrift stores instead of buying from expensive clothing brands. reuse your tupperware and utensils from home, you don't need to go out and buy bamboo utensils and metal straws. she is much more than a sustainability 'enthusiast' dabbling into the topic, i highly recommend her channel to anyone who's interested in sustainability and zero waste :)

      Yeah, if you have that kind of money you'd probably have a significantly higher impact by buying regular priced products and donating to one of the most effective charities instead. Buying very expensive products to help the planet is a huge waste. They say that every effort counts, and while that's technically true, some efforts are more helpful than others by a factor of 100 to 1000.

      Agreed definitely in the Western cosmetic markets especially. However I have found some Korean skincare brands that have sustainability as a core principle while keeping the Korean markets lower price tag! (Due to the demand they are able to lower their prices). I can't confirm the complete extent of their sustainability efforts for them all as it was hard to research specifics, particularly for a market that doesn't have a lot of English translations. However 'I'm From' will even tell you the name of the farm it's star ingredient comes from, they're the same company as "Skin&Lab" which has a Hyram approved vitamin C serum. Iunik has a tea tree serum that is one of Hyram's favourite products and there's Purito. I believe both say the donate to environmental causes too. Krave Beauty is also a great option! Their Great Barrier Relief serum is worth the hype! The founder is a skincare youtuber Liah Yoo and she has been super transparent and even asked her followers on feedback trying to create more sustainable packaging and the struggles.

I feel like wealthy people can afford to have nice skin and people who struggle financially can't afford to have nice skin...And as for the sustainable brands... I'm someone who wants nice skin but I live in poverty/survival mode so forget it. I don't even bother looking at them because yeah I'm not paying 50 bucks for a moisturizer, 100 dollars for a cleanser ect and when you add it all up, your skin care routine will be shockingly expensive!! How does someone keep up monthly with an expensive skincare routine? You think they would make sustainable skincare products affordable so we can protect our planet

    Btw glass is DEFINITELY more sustainable, because it can be recycled indefinitely and plastic cannot. So is cardboard b/c it can be recycled or composted. However, if you can find a company that has plastic packaging (bonus if its made from recycled plastic) but takes it back to refill it, then that would be the more sustainable option.

    • @achilleassystem1287
      @achilleassystem1287 3 роки тому +25

      Glass can definitely be recycled infinitely but unfortunately it won't be. It takes a lot of energy to melt it down to make new products which puts out a lot of carbon emissions and can be expensive. Also people switching to glass means companies will be trying to make new glass, which starts using up sand and we don't have infinite amounts of it. There's also a huge issue in the recycling systems globally, only a tiny percentage of recycling actually is recycled because the companies are trying to make a profit. The huge majority of recycling isn't high value and some is even negative value so they will try to dump it on poorer countries to deal with. The entire recycling system is a mess and it gets very confusing but please don't stop recycling things or making better swaps when you can! It's best to just repurpose glass jars and containers where possible!

      it depends on the plastic. i worked in plastic for years, and the percentage of regrind is high even in new manufacturing. Ex. the plastic interior parts in a car can be recycled many many times over, but companies won't because of the difficulty in pigment matching.

I remember moisturizing my face with a mix of coconut oil and peppermint oil, and washing my face with honey (okay I still like honey as a mask but not to wash my face). I wonder how using pineapple as skincare is even considered sustainable? I mean unless you live in a place where pineapple grows it has to be transported a long way (possibly even by plane) creating tons of carbon emissions and then you need to buy them regularly in order to exfoliate regularly. An actual exfoliating product lasts much longer (my The Ordinary Glycolic acid lasts for 6+ months).

    sustainable skin care is SO HARD especially when you have acne etc. I decided to go with a pure reduce solution where i jsut use cetaphil, my morning med, my evening med, and a balm if i get dry. no masks, toners, serums, etc. I do also love acne dots, they’re the only thing that keeps me from picking my face so I’ve had to accept the waste there. They've also come out with these super cool concentrate products that you melt down in hot water, once they cool you can use them to wash your hair, moisturize your skin, etc. I love their products in theory due to how eco-friendly they are, but I'm not sure if they're the most effective - I'm a skincare newbie. Good molecules has 2 soap free cleanser bars and states the pH on their website. Aveeno also has a soap free cleanser bar that is not an alkaline pH. The drunk elephant bars are also soap free and at a nice pH but now that there are competing products, I don’t think we need to spend so much money on it. Dr Leslie Baumann has a book called Cosmetic Dermatology, where she mentions “syndet bars” which are made with synthetic detergents (soapless soaps) like Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate. Slowly, companies are starting to catch on how make bars that aren’t so alkaline and stripping, which is exciting.

    Oh no, Cassandra! GLASS Expert here! I work for a glass recycling company and have been in the recycling industry for 10 years. In most cases, you don't need to soak labels off! Check with your local recycler or city, but it is very rare. Glass is 100% recyclable, not all plastic is. Especially small containers like cosmetics & skincare. Your glass is going to be way more likely to make it through the material recycling facility or MRF. The stoppers, like Ordinary's are not recyclable but you can re-use them and the containers for other things! Glass is also the only 100% inert packaging that will not react or breakdown contents. Hot tip on cardboard, if you have very small boxes try and stick them inside a larger (broken down flat) cardboard box. Great video, thank you!

    Fun fact. Many cities and states are not recycling glass anymore because it cost more and uses more energy to actually recycle it. Yes it can be recycled an infant amount of times, but it also has to be melted super hot in order for it to turn to liquid again to then be made into a new solid. Many areas don’t have the funding to keep up with the demand anymore so they cancelled the programs. I focus more on plastic packaging that I know can be recycled (like bottles) and glass packaging that I know I can keep reusing an infante amount of times myself.

Anhydrous, so no need for a preservative; I apply it to my face and then work in just a tad bit of water to dissolve the urea. The mask rinses off clean thanks to the emulsifier. For those interested, the recipe is from Humblebee and Me. And hey, I like the smell of shea butter!

And when it comes to black plastic there is no chance to recycle it. The machines can't see through the material and don't define it as plastic. That's why most of the times it lands in normal waste.

    • @louisekp141
      @louisekp141 3 роки тому +3

      It's actually not that black and white.. You need to take the entire life cycle into account, meaning the natural resources that are used in creating new glass (a lot of sand that our planet can't just replenish right away), the production process of making glass that is very energy-intensive, the transportation (glass is a lot heavier than plastic and breaks more easily, so more emissions from transportation), and the fact that a lot of glass isn't actually being recycled either (+ glass takes a million years to break down, a LOT longer than plastic - BUT on the other hand, glass doesn't release microplastics so there's that).
      Not saying all of this now makes every product with plastic packaging more sustainable than products with glass packaging, life cycle analyses should be performed to figure that out (and I'm definitely not an expert, I just work with some :-)). It's just important to take everything into account, not just the 1 part that a lot of zero waste advocates (and now companies hopping on the zero waste train) focus on which is recycling (which is of course important!). If we truly want to consume sustainably we need to let go of this "green" idea that "plastic is the devil and glass is the perfect sustainable solution" and be open to other options! So I think Cassandra is right for looking into all of this.

    The zero waste product doesn't really seem "hygienic" for acne-prone skin. As a "cyster" I prefer liquid product since I want to be safe with bacteria so I cannot imagine using bar of serum or bar of cleanser for my face. Also Youth to the People has a great glass bottle cleanser that you can reuse after for hand soap for example or you can also reuse The Ordinary bottle for when you're travelling !

    Theres a difficult part in Sustainability where consumers are being held accountable and made to feel bad for distroying the earth where the truth is what we do as individuals is a drop in the bucket compared to factories and militarys that do large amounts of damage. A lot of people are just doing the best they can and cant aford to buy all the Eco friendly labled goods because that sticker often comes with a huge price bump or is just simply not available in some areas. There are some things that are a bit easier to achieve than others like reusing glass coffee jars or cloth from old torn clothes things that save you money as well as wasting less but we do need to chill out and just do what we can and what feels right to us without stressing to hard about our indevidual impact. The good news is corporations and business men are often self interested and do what they think people will spend money on most so just the fact people are caring more about the earth in general is forcing companies to go more green or organic or sustainable in order to keep people happy so things are changing slowly and they are becoming more accessible to us. Basically dont let people make you feel bad because you need to use a product that isnt green so to speak because there are many reasons someone might need to use something aka medical reasons, financial reasons or not having the resources to make a "better choice" so just do your best but dont worry to much.

    I do make my own soap bars (sell them too). I love good bar soap and do not find them too stripping or harsh at all. All handmade soap has glycerine that is amazing for skin. Also, I do crochet the face pads that are 100% cotton and reusable. I would look into the ‘’cardboard’’ packaging. If it has a layer of wax it is not recyclable - at least where I am. I try to use the kraft paper boxes for my soaps. 😀

      When I was a kid, I got poison ivy so badly EVERY year. Like, all over my body, oozing itchy grossness. My mom would cook up a whole pot of oatmeal and slather it all over my body and it worked to calm my itching and irritation.
