Hi Cassandra, could you explain how using petroleum in your skincare goes with “the morals and values”? I get that it is (or can be) vegan but the whole industry has huge environmental effect so I wonder how you justify it.
Loved your channel for a long time but this is a first time comment. Do you have a video describing what kind of schooling/ training you worked through to get into your profession? I’m 5 years out of college, hate my career, and want to pursue something that I have a deep vested interest in (I’ve struggled with acne for the past 10 years). I would love to hear about your journey in the field. Thank you for all that you do! ♥️
Hello Cassandra, I really want to know what do you think about the biologique recherche skin care... it would be nice to make a video with your opinion 😊
Fun Fact (I obtained from watching Dr. Dray's skin care routine): You can use CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser (4% Benzyol Peroxide) on your arm pits and then you won't need deodorant. The Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria so you don't get the smell when you sweat. I found that interesting and thought I'd share since Dr. Lee talked about her use of deodorant.
I picked this trick up from Dr. Dray! I've been using 10% BPO washes and following up with the glycolic acid toner from the ordinary. Still need deodorant, but I no longer need the expensive, extra strong kind! Never thought I'd be using face wash and toner on my pits, but here we are😆
I love how simple her routine is. Validation for me and my simple routine! Here’s my opinion on the injection thing: She was very clear that she’s a dermatologist and that’s the only reason she can do this at home but if you’re not a trained professional you must go to a doctor’s office. If someone watches that video and doesn’t understand that or follow that, no amount or disclaimers or protection against things will keep them from doing unwise things at home. If they really want to stick needles in their face at home and think they can handle it, then they’ll probably will no matter what anyone says.
Makeup wipes are great for the disabled and chronically ill. If I'm tired ill just use micellar water and a recycled round but if I m exhausted it wipe time!
Thank you soooo much for pointing this out!! I’m ashamed to say I don’t always consider this, but yes!! Sponge paths can be a lifesaver and makeup wipes can work very will in these situations!! Just make sure you’re using wipes that have ingredients that soothe and work for your akin. Thank you so much for bringing this up!!
I've found an oil cleanser that emulsifies and rinses off much quicker and easier for when I'm tired personally. The micellar water and wipes take time, especially for eye makeup.
Great information! However I am disappointed by the comment that Korean Skin care routines are fake or just a marketing scam. Asia in general has a very very long history in skincare in which our grandparents/ parents have adopted and lived by. There is a lot of truth in our skincare processes and the extended routines that we go through. This is a very NORMAL thing in Asia and have worked for a very long time. I'm probably just being a little sensitive but that commentary just didn't sit well with me. Love your videos though!
Korean skincare saved my skin! I am an advanced practice Esthetician (Not allowed to say medical Esthetician in my state) and even then, it wasn't until I used clean Korean skincare my ultra acne prone, oily-leaning, dehydrated, reactive (prone to redness) and slightly sensitive (added fragrance) and sensitized (by tundra times or intensive exfoliating treatments) that it is the most cooperative, least problematic it's ever been. I always say balance is the name of the game and treatment comes when you're skin is ready. I think the biggest thing is good, concentrated ingredients and having that bit of an arsenal so you can always give your skin what it needs! And then the solution for when it needs more. 10 steps never hurts if they're the right ones. But I personally prefer alternating certain daily products from morning to night so I have 12+ products in a day but use 4-7 per sitting. Quicker and more in tune with balance seeking imo. Hope that helps!
@@beautyfullyopinionated yeah I mean I'm Asian and I can tell you that Asians have been all about skin before it even became a trend. There's a reason why they are the world leaders in skin care. There's truth to their processes that it works.
@@martadias906 Suree, she can't say medical because many states want to ensure that the line is clear for those who may not know the difference between someone who received medical certifications and a doctor but it's hardly professional appropriation. Most don't want to pass as a doctor, they just want their title to reflect the extra training they did which I am sure you can understand.
5:25 She technically said the k-beauty trend with the 18 steps are all marketing bs. Which is true. There are essences, ampules, serums which are pretty much the same thing. Adding too much product on top of product will cause SOME products will cause product buildup and you wont get the ingredients you actually need in the skin. It just sits on top and will disintegrate. Waste of product. Also some products counteract with each other, causing irritation. Make sure do research in ALL products OR your skin can have chemical burns. Wait til one drys and put the next. That takes time and I know many young people dont do that. I think korean beauty is good and have great ingredients but dont use too much product at once. I have some korean products but I dont do so many steps. Brands want you to use 10+ steps because they want you to buy more of their products and more money for them. $$$ you dont need 10 steps. You can achieve the same skin within 5 steps.
This makes me so happy to hear! Sending both you and your mother lots of love and gigantic hug’s! If she doesn’t see this comment, please share it with her for me!
Cassandra's reaction at 24:00 annoyed me. Like, Vaseline can promote milia in some people she isn't the only dermatologist to say that. Also she's a DERMATOLOGIST!
CeraVe healing ointment is only 46 percent petrolatum. It has ceramides, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, paraffin, mineral oil, etc. I’ve seen a big difference going from using Vaseline to CeraVe healing ointment.
You don’t just need a moisturizer if you “need extra moisture.” If you are cleansing your face and/or wetting the face, which 100% do or should do, you need a moisturizer to repair the moisture barrier. So the bare minimum skincare routine is cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
I love Cassandra’s detailed explanations! Sometimes I have questions when I watch certain dermatologist’s videos on their skin care routine and Cassandra expands on what and why they are or might be doing what they’re doing or items they are using and find this super helpful. I love her humor and personality. Useful content and entertaining to watch her.
I don't use wipes myself and agree that they are not ideal however I think you (who I really love!) and other experts are blowing it way too much out of proportion. It's turned into an obsession. There are plenty of other terrible things that we are either exposed to or do that are way more harmful. Keep making your great videos Cassandra, I have been a fan of yours since wayyyyyyyy back.
Thank you. I do not prefer makeup wipes but when someone says it causes pollution and waste ...hey what about those single use sheet masks. Utterly useless and super expensive and create way more waste with all that individual packaging than the wipes which come in a single pack. I still won't use wipes though. But then I think all other things should be equally criticised like small plastic bottles that these skin care stuff come in.
@@tusais7 That's why you double cleanse. Not only that, the wipes do pull at the skin, causing premature aging. There is also a video that shoes the difference between using wipes and oil cleansers, and wipes leave so much nasty stuff behind.
@@tusais7 Please stop trying to educate me. I'm well familiar with skincare as I am studying to be an esthetician in France, which is far more rigorous and intensive than those in the USA. Wipes are bad, period. And I only recommend them to those that are physically impaired. The best thing to use is micellar water with reusable cotton rounds if someone really wants to wipe stuff off their face. As for the "mascara" on your head, proper skincare oil emulsifies the products all over and furthur emulsifies when water is add. You're not actually smearing other makeup products into your pores.
I wholeheartedly disagree with the statement that makeup wipes "don't remove makeup". That's just false. They do. They might not remove it all, but barely anything does, hence the importance of double cleansing. With the option of biodegradable wipes now, the concept that they all must end up in landfill is also inherently incorrect.
I have pcos and have oily skin and ‘large pores’ and used to hate that BUT I’m now 40 and I’m actually grateful for my oily skin, I’ve just still get fine lines and literally still get ID checked for buying redbulls 😳🤣 I’ve learnt how to treat my skin and your videos have helped massively.. thankyou Cassandra 🦋 💕🥰
I’m so happy I found your channel through James Welsh! I love that you’re vegan and cruelty free and environmentally conscious and look at things in a holistic sort of way (As do I) but also blend it seamlessly with science. Most of the time those two things are things are taught as mutually exclusive (which I always believed). But I’m learning so much from you and it’s kind of changing my world view! It’s so important to remain open and receptive to changing opinions. I’d really love to learn about skincare ingredients and the science behind them. I’m so grateful for your channel!
How some people have the audacity to react to a trained medical professional’s skincare routine when they themself only qualify as a esthetician blows my mind.
Lmfao seriously.... like aestheticians don’t have the power to prescribe or diagnose anything. Suddenly they know more than a derm. She really just puts in medical diagrams and suddenly acts like she is on a similar level. Picture of the olfactory system while talking about fragrance in makeup wipes like girl so extra and unhelpful for such a small point
Some acne derms couldn't give a fuck about providing real results but LOVE prescribing medications and do nothing else. 7 years into my acne journey and not ONE of them helped me (I'm now reliant on antibiotics thank you very much). She learns about positive and alternative ways to cure it. So fuck off her channel if you're here to be rude.
@@unbiasly why are you here? Can you leave? That would be awesome. P.s. don't watch videos that maybe you're here to hate the creator for? You a certified hater.
L'Oréal owns CeraVe (since 2017) in America CeraVe is not cruelty free, several of the ingredients are tested on animals by third parties. If you'd like to find out yourself you can contact CeraVe, and ask about the ingredients suppliers and animal testing.
One of the attributes I appreciate about Cassandra's video's is she is so candidx& honest,in a retail market that is neither as a rule. To say she has become critical & judgemental is putting down the very qualities popularizing Cassandra & her channel. I think she is informative humorous , well educated& being able to admit when she might have been a bit wrong. That takes integrity. Keep it up Cassandra, you are appreciated & loved❣️
I'm not even going to finish this video. Dr. Pimple Popper's products have literally been the only thing that has gotten rid of my acne and I am so grateful. She's an ACTUAL dermatologist, so I think I'll listen to her before I listen to an esthetician. 🤷🏽♀️ sorry, I get that your job is skincare, but so is hers.
The fact that you mention whether some of these product are cruelty free or not is really great! I haven’t don’t really search to see if my products are, but definitely will start to ensure that what I use is from a company that is cruelty free. 👌🏼
As someone who is just getting in to skin care for the first time, what important products do you need, not necessarily brand company wise, but like serums, cleanser, and actually things you need in your routine.
Great question!! We address this in the video but all that’s truly needed is a cleanser and spf! If you feel you need more moisturizer a moisturizer is another one of the basics. If you have acne or wrinkles or other things you want I to treat you can add spot treatments or serums etc. toners serums and masks are super fun but not always a necessity. Hope this helps!!
If you're an acne sufferer though, there are specific steps to include certain ingredients you may want to take. Same thing if you're a heavy/waterproof makeup wearer. But if you don't have these variables, then simple is the way to go!
I have PCOS and I'm very glad you touched on it a little bit. My acne used to be hooorrible especially in the areas that I do grow hair. I also have hypothyroidism so basically my hormones are just a huge mess lol
Is there a video on how you overcame or techniques to overcome picking your skin? I am 31 and have struggled since I was a teen from compulsive picking (my face mainly, but anywhere really)
OMG same I finish dermatology school two years ago and I got my license I’m so happy good luck with school and you have a very rewarding career ahead of you :)
I'm 49 and am grateful for all the work you are doing in this category. I've ordered the body products and dots; can't wait to try. Blew through the Killa dots in a day and not terribly impressed. Tested the dots on my body and the real bonus was that they kept me from picking. LOL
I'm really surprised to see people attack this video on the basis that she isn't a physician and Dr. Lee is. Why isn't she allowed to comment? It's not as if medical esthetiscians don't also have a lot of useful knowledge especially on what treatments/products one can get in practices and do/use at home (and what certain ingredients are useful for). They often work with dermatologists in the first place. I thought this video was very supportive and positive, for the most part she approved of the products mentioned and the advice and tips that were given.
Only the make-up wipes were an issue and Dr. Lee maybe doesn't value veganism or animal testing as highly. But remember, disagreements between professionals are okay (you don't necessarily need to be a doctor to have sufficient knowledge on this subject). Listen to multiple opinions and the research behind them and draw your conclusions from that. I have a lot of respect for people in the medical field, but being a dermatologist doesn't necessarily mean you are the only one with the right to comment, critique or explain things that have to do with skin health and skin care. There are other professions with a lot of knowledge on this subject. (I'm obviously not saying to not listen to your doctors, just not to devalue other professionals because of them. Especially when they don't even really disagree or are rude in the first place!)
@@myrundise2552 I personally feel like there is a lot of inconsistency in her content, and that she isn’t genuine or sincere about people’s skin which is why I didn’t really like the video. But, for people to attack her solely for giving an opinion is ridiculous to me, to believe that people cannot even add to a conversation is just wrong.
@@michellewest6929 Yeah exactly! I'm not very familiar with the rest of her content so I don't know how it compares. It was just a bit surprising to see.
I love your attitude so much. Skin is a living thing and never looks like the magazines/Instagram and it is important to be truthful about our textured skin and acne. I’m mid-thirties now and the reality is both grey hairs and acne at the same time. Brutal! Lol...
Love you and thanks for being here!! I compared myself to photoshopped images for so many years and so now I hope to expose the industry to help others understand their skincare and love themselves!!
I never comment on videos, they get lost in amongst the thousands! I just have to say that I believe everything happens for a reason. You were born to have severe acne my dear. Imagine if you hadn’t ever had it.... more in likely you’d be doing something else. I’ve watched you since you first sat in your living room exposing your face to the world and I have continued to watch and LEARN from one of the very few I trust on the internet. So to sum this all up, I send a huge thank you to you. 💜

She is just making a commentary video with her opinion and pov on certain products and adding more info to what the derm is saying. I personally enjoy it
This is one of the most informational skincare routines I've ever seen. I love Dr. Lee 😊 thank you so much for taking the time to react to this Cassandra!
I have researched Lancome and although I also think they are overpriced and I have never liked their products, they DO NOT test on animals. I believe it's unfair to them to say they do.
it kind of bothers me that she is judging a derm and acting like she knows just as much as they do while the Dr is talking. idk I like the channel but it rubbed me the wrong way
Thank you, Caassandra! Could you please do a video on the French brand L'occitane? Their branding is very eco-conscious and cruelty free, they have a lot of big ingredients but I'd love to hear what you think about this brand! :) I really like them so far but want to be sure I'm making the right choice
I really really appreciate you adding the part about where the veins and arteries on the face are. I don’t think it was super responsible of her to show that on camera, people get ideas and they don’t think common sense- they think ah! A quick solution I can just do at home! So you taking the time to create that image of you and the arteries, and giving that disclaimer may have literally saved someone from that long term damage or even their life. You are my favorite acne youtuber because of that. I know i can trust you!
I still cannot believe how much your skin has improved! I remember when I first saw you on UA-cam when you were suffering from acne and I’m so glad you were able to clear your skin for the most part. You mentioned that you are still struggling with back acne, as am I. Any products you recommend? I was going to try Paula’s Choice’s acne body wash but it’s not cheap... 😅
The only thing that has really worked for me is a salicylic acid wash 3% and a retinoid product from Deciem (2% granactive.) But my bacne is all blackheads and not inflammatory and I have pretty dry skin. If your skin is different you may have a different reaction.
If a micellar water and cotton pad removes dirt and oils... why wouldn’t makeup wipes? You’re still applying surfactants to the face same as any cleanser. As long as you’re rinsing off and ideally using a second cleanse, I don’t buy for a second that it’s “just moving around the dirt.” What evidence is there for that? Yes they’re waste and not great and there is some physical exfoliation that’s occurring but they’re way too demonized
My skin suffered so much because of makeup wipes. They made my acne so much worse! Too harsh and didn't clean well. A soft reusable cloth like makeup eraser is much more gentle, and you can choose a makeup remover or micellar water with ingredients that suit you and the makeup you wear much more easily with less waste.
@@logophilelyss4390 no one is arguing that they’re the best pre cleanse out there nor that they should be used alone. Though there’s plenty of makeup wipes with the same ingredients as your average cleansing water or micellar water and a softer texture that aren’t damaging if used gently if you’re on the go or traveling or something. The point is that this argument that they “just move dirt around your face” makes no sense since they contain surfactants so they’re interacting with dirt and oils on the face and being wiped away and if that’s all they do then the same would apply to micellar water. It’s not the end of the world if you’re in a situation where using them makes sense and you ideally follow up with a regular cleanser.
@@skinsciencebymira Ah got it. I was just thinking that there are equally easy ways that are less damaging and less wasteful but maybe that's just my experience. I have chronic pain and fatigue so it felt relevant to say lol
@@logophilelyss4390 cleansing oils are definitely a better option and less waste took like I mentioned. I just am not a fan of the misinformation or making people feel bad if they’re in a situation where they need to use a wipe. That’s all ♥️
I use petrolatum on my skin too. I have extremely dry skin & it makes my face so soft. Most people would frown at this, but they must not have dry skin.
I don’t understand all this hate towards makeup wipes. If your makeup wipes only move the makeup around your face instead of removing it, then clearly you need better ones 🤔. And they’re usually used as a first step out of a multi-step cleansing process. I waste SO much water and product when I try to directly use a cleanser without utilizing a makeup wipe first. It’s simply a matter of practicality. Makeup wipes cut down my routine by a significant amount of time, so I continue to use them...
Vaseline or Petrolatum is by its very definition vegan. It is made from mineral oil. There is no none vegan Vaselin. Certain vaselin products can be nonvegan, when the vaselin is mixed with aktive ingredients, color or fragrance. But the pure and simple unscented vaseline is completely made from plankton and algea that died millions of years ago.
@@katarinag5256 technically its not fossils, its dead algae, plankton etc. that died in huge quantities and cooked under pressure. Fossils are mineralized structures of former living beings.
@@katarinag5256 they are, and so is plankton. The point is, that mineral oil is technically not a fossil, because it is not a mineralized structure. Its simply another process that produces oil, then the one causing fossilisation

I also wish I'd used Spf earlier/more religiously. From 2013 - 2021, I was heavily into tanning. I used sunscreen in the summer when I knew I'd be outside, but I didn't in the winter. I turned 30 last summer, and it seems like all of the damage has caught up with me. Thank you for making educational and informative videos. I'm learning how to take care of my skin thanks to you ❤
Imagine if we judged for the quality of information rather than the title of who it's coming from. If Cassandra is wrong about something, that's definitely something worth pointing out in the comments but if you're just mad about someone having the audacity to contribute to a conversation even though she doesn't have a certain degree, you've lost me.
I’ve been thinking this so much, like gurl, it’s just her point of view based on her own knowledge, she’s not saying she’s superior or knows more than an actual dermatologist, just sharing information about it, people can be wrong and they could have a certain degree or not, that’s why we all are humans

Makeup wipes can be useful for removing makeup before cleansing. Especially helpful because they are better than washcloths and hands for most people who don’t wash their cloths or hands scrupulously before cleansing. Also very good for people with hard water to remove the first layer of makeup and sunscreen. It lessens the about of scrubbing and tap water you need to use. Also lessens need for harsh cleansers in the first and second cleanse. They have their place in the routine. They aren’t just completely bad. 🙄🙄🙄 ETA: moisturizer is not optional. It is a critical part of the skincare routine, ESPECIALLY IF you use retinoids. Even oily skin needs moisturizer. ETA: oils are NOT moisturizers, they are lubricants. And the one time you definitely need a moisturizer is after cleansing, which is the primary event that causes transepidermal water loss. You said you don’t need one after cleansing. ALSO: a moisturizer comprises three elements, oils/ emollients are one. If it just oil it is a lubricant, it is not a moisturizer. Good God.
I found your bit on inflammation really informative. I know a lot of people continuously irritate their skin with products because they like the look of inflammation (like lip plumpers but I have seen people do the same with people using dissolvable needles in their face to fill in lines) and I've always thought that can't be good for you long term. I'm wondering whether these types of injuries count as mild inflammation or acute inflammation.
Have you looked into the makeup eraser as a makeup wipe alternative? If so, what are your thoughts? I own one and it really does remove all of my mascara etc. and is re-washable.
Thank you for all of analysis that you make. I am a Esthetics studient and some times we (read I or studients) stick to basics of college and you make me think beyond, think out of the box and dedicated more time to learn and know more to offer the best for my clients ♡
I use DHC oil cleansing oil. I seen one of the Welch brother's recommending it. I use this it remove all makeup, then follow up with a gentle cleanser.

@@CassandraBankson I’m in the same boat and it’s an excellent point. Thank you for being open minded
I've found an oil cleanser that emulsifies and rinses off much quicker and easier for when I'm tired personally. The micellar water and wipes take time, especially for eye makeup.
I can't believe I never thought about this. So glad you brought this up 🥰
What about a cleaner that you don’t rinse off? Like the one by la roche posay?
She's becoming bitchy

IMO cleanser and sunscreen is all u need. Sunscreen is basically a moisturizer but with UV ray protection
@@draydenayers6693 well, your opinion is factually incorrect. Moisturizer is needed.

It goes to show that even medical professionals can still be wrong. They are not god.

I recommend a retinoid or azelaic acid
plus drinking green tea/black tea/earl gray
The only thing that has really worked for me is a salicylic acid wash 3% and a retinoid product from Deciem (2% granactive.) But my bacne is all blackheads and not inflammatory and I have pretty dry skin. If your skin is different you may have a different reaction.
I love to see the concern for waste and animal testing, especially from someone who has so much influence on the products bought :)
Wow, that’s so true. I didn’t even think of it like that.

I use Vaseline on my skin every night it’s a life saver for my dry skin!!!!!

Can you please make a video about the products from paula’s choice? I really would like to know wich products are worth the hype and especially wich are great for my acneprone skin with eczema. My pores always clog really fast but my skin is always so dry and i don’t know what to do about it
Makeup wipes can be useful for removing makeup before cleansing.
ETA: moisturizer is not optional.
Good God.
Cassandra's cat at the end killed me, its my spirit animal
I found your bit on inflammation really informative. I know a lot of people continuously irritate their skin with products because they like the look of inflammation (like lip plumpers but I have seen people do the same with people using dissolvable needles in their face to fill in lines) and I've always thought that can't be good for you long term. I'm wondering whether these types of injuries count as mild inflammation or acute inflammation.
::Me rubbing my eyes:: "I wish I hadn't rubbed my eyes" oh no...
Have you looked into the makeup eraser as a makeup wipe alternative? If so, what are your thoughts? I own one and it really does remove all of my mascara etc. and is re-washable.
Damn, Dr. Lee has the most beautiful cheekbones
Thank you for all of analysis that you make. I am a Esthetics studient and some times we (read I or studients) stick to basics of college and you make me think beyond, think out of the box and dedicated more time to learn and know more to offer the best for my clients ♡
Dr Sandra Lee has the best cheekbones ever 😍

I use DHC oil cleansing oil. I seen one of the Welch brother's recommending it. I use this it remove all makeup, then follow up with a gentle cleanser.
