Agreed. Tho Affleck made a pretty great Bruce Wayne. He was honestly the best part of those terrible movies. His Batman was great too. I hope we still get HIS version of a solo Batman film.
stay strong. sounds cliche but you are gonna do great things if you just keep living for what you have now. we relate and even if that doesn't mean anything the people who are there for you will always be there. I hope the best for you.
I have been... for maybe 20+ years. Only now MAYBE starting to "come around" and think a lot more about it. But you know what? It's the fact that one IS in Depression, or having bouts with clinical Anxiety (capital letters essential) that cause one to BELIEVE: "What good would it do?" It's even especially more difficult when the financials simply aren't there. When you're struggling to pay rent or eat... hope and wellness are NOT around the corner--they feel like a luxury. I mean when the idea of new SOCKS or a new SHIRT is a 'luxury'.... well, THERAPY?!?! Fuggeddabouddid.
Knowing that everyone I know is depressed doesn't make me feel better about being depressed any more than it helped all those people in the water after the Titanic went down felt better about having company.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you are poor, middle, rich, famous, popular, or got some top position, understand that we are all human and all susceptible to down times and depression. Great to see he battled the issue and seeking help.
Actually being poor greatly aggravates depression. Think about it: You have a car problem you might be out of a car for a long time and could even lose your car, home, or job. Or you have a health problem your insurance doesn't want to cover so now you're feeling worse but can't afford to alleviate the situation. Let's say you're rich and famous like this guy and like passerell says you can have a woman every day of the week giving you comfort -- maybe choose one for a long-term relationship, easy. So YES it DOES matter. The difference is that the rich guy with depression has more time and more ways to deal with it whether that's hiring a personal trainer, going on vacation for a month or longer, or whatever it is rich guys like him can do that no one else can. He can go to the best therapists money can offer. Can have his body tested for food allergies and go on a diet that helps against his depression the most effective way. So on and so forth. It might not save him from suicide BUT he has far better resources to do so.
passerell Issue with that is a) you can get in trouble from what we are seeing now 2) you will always end up lonely if you aren't happy with one thing in your life. Rarity to see things remain in life. Damien, I know lots of rich people that I was good friends with. Most of them aren't really happy and pretend to be happy when they have lots of stuff. Don't let the smiles always fool you. When you get to know them for real, you would understand. There are many ways to overcome depression. People choose religion if taught correctly, go back to school to learn new things, find a job, go hiking, travel, or find something they are passionate about. I think the bottomline is that people need to be grateful to be alive right now.
That's not the problem with my point. You mentioned two things that happen to rich and poor people equally, so that was pointless to say, doesn't make any difference in the conversation. The point is, depression in poor people is much worse to have, because you can not afford to skip work, there's anxiety linked to everything and it's real. Damien said it very well. The fact that you tell me there's rich people who are depressed, does not refute the point. Anyways, your solution is one that I have encountered in my life. Being grateful. I agree and have experienced the most happiness in that state. Whenever I waste my time, don't value oportunities because I feel superior to them, and think too much, is when I get depressed. So I understand perfectly well why rich people get depressed. Too much time, too much ego. "If I don't make 500 an hour like Ive always have, Im not moving a finger". There's also anxiety related to status, etc
"The point is, depression in poor people is much worse to have, because you can not afford to skip work, there's anxiety linked to everything and it's real." Not only that, there is a lack in education in the area they live in or cities poor economy. The city where I grew up in was very poor and only had one McDonalds and one Walmart. If you wanted to get more, you would have to travel long distances to get supplies. Best education, had to travel for that. Lots of time people are trapped mentally saying "they will always be poor" and remain in that state. Thats why many successful people who used to be poor is helping the poor get to where they are suppose to be, happy and free. Their main goal is to not encourage people to buy to show of their materialism of how rich they are because most of the time people can lie about buying it, but in reality they are renting it. The best way I can describe depression is the growth of roots in life. Let look at it this way, can a biggest tree survive with the smallest roots? It can't because it will fall because its not anchored down strong enough due to the weight on top. Things need to balance so portioning the roots and other parts of the tree is important. It should never be consider as a negative. Life should be always balanced.

I can attest to wanting to sleep all day when you're depressed. Cause when you're asleep you dream, you rest, you don't have to deal with life. Your shortcomings, problems. Real or imagined.
you still wake up, and its the bad dreams that get you up, then the day is shot so is you're schedule, then you.....then other humans think you're a lazy fuck off, then more self hatred.....hence..........suicide

It's awesome to see a public figure/icon reveal their struggle with a non-discriminatory, very real physiological disease. Hopefully testimonials like Jon's will start to shed some of the stigma of mental health issues & treatments.
Vanessa A I really hope you’re right. I have severe depression and anxiety and I live in a highly populated area. It’s impossible to make friends and even harder to keep them when you have this disease. Ppl think you’re weird. What’s worse is with all the medications they throw at ppl like me these days, others find it odd and troubling. Everyone thinks I’m some crazy junky with feelings that shouldn’t be validated bc they aren’t “normal”. It’s a horrible way to continue to live, which is why suicide rates have risen. Isolation is deadly.
@@etaylorw your feelings are valid I'll tell you that much point blank!! No one needs to validate your feelings for them to be 100% real anyway. However, remember there are two important parts to anyones brain the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. The limbic system is responsible for keeping you safe and will over worry just to make sure you're ok all the time (I think this is were the darker thoughts come from) and the prefrontal cortex the part of your brain that evolved last. The part of your brain that think long term goals, that is a meaning making machine, that is more chill and rational. I believe it's important to acknowledge all your feelings but it's important to understand what part of your brain creates these feelings because the limbic brain is not always rational and is called the lizard brain for a reason. It over worries as its constantly vigilant for danger but in the modern world we are not going to be eaten by a tiger any time soon so it over exaggerates a lot. I'm not trying to blame you I believe any brain including mine functions this way. I believe it's good to know so that we can appreciate that not everything our brain is saying is true, it's just a thought at the end of the day. A thought nothing more or less :)
When my dad died it changed my life . I just didn't realise it until a few months and years after grieving....they will always be in your head and in your dreams and you appreciate them so much. i miss you so much dad . . . thank you for all you taught me.
Now I get it! I get how he was so freakin good as Don Draper! He must have used this own pain to explore the deepest vulnerabilities of Don. Hell of an actor!
What a strong and kind man he is! My heart goes out to you Mr. Jon Hamm you are a beautiful human being inside and out. I am a 36yrs old i lost my mother to lymphoma 15 months ago and I am in severe depression ever since I cannot imagine how terrible and scary it must have been to lose your mom at a young age.

i love how he talks about the leg being broken and getting it fix along and comparing it to mental illness. my bestfriend has depression and she tells me time to time that her brain is broken and that she needs to get help but when she tries to reach out to her parents, they just tell her "its all in your head" which just hurts her even more. Thats the stigma that Jon is talking about and that we must, let me rephrase that, have to overcome because there are love ones going through this pain every single day. Not all ilnesses are visible.
Martin Flores Yes, his analogy is spit on. It’s like telling someone with heart disease or diabetes not to take medication to lower their high blood pressure or insulin levels. To just risk a heart attack or stroke because they are too ashamed to take medication. That’s insane, right? Yet people in 2018 are still made to feel ashamed for needing medication for mental illness. It’s not ‘all in your head’.
her parents are probably part of the problem..I was there myself, suicidally depressed, telling my mother at 17 that I think I need counselling, and her telling me to just "walk it off". In reality my father was mentally and emotionally and even semi-sexually abusive towards me for as long as I can remember, and my mother was always in denial about it, and would struggle to keep up an immaculate image of us as a family to the outside-at the cost of my sanity and happiness.
pam0626 These psychiatric medications don’t actually address the problem though. They mask it. It’s like treating a broken leg with painkillers. The leg doesn’t actually get fixed. These massive pharmaceutical corporations are pushing these drugs as a solution when in actuality they’re simply getting people high and calling them fixed.
So by this logic you can say to someone who has a brain tumor that it's not much of a problem as _"its all in your head"_ . Most people don't understand anything to depression and underestimate the bad effects it can have.
I’ve related to this man more than Anyone else on this show. I lost my mom this year and I’m 20 and my dads just not in the picture. You really do feel alone and for him to make success after things that could’ve broken him is extremely inspiring.

"If you break your ankle you're not expected to just walk it off!" Great analogy! Depression is, in this day and age when it has been talked about so much, still largely misunderstood! There are people who suffer with it in silence, there are others who don't have it yet claim to in order to get sympathy... People often don't know how to deal with those who suffer from it. And of course, depression covers such a wide range of conditions with different traits, and inflicts people with widely varying circumstances and personalities that I think we are still at the edge of the crevice with it. It certainly needs our continued attention

bluedance lilly I think you may need to watch the show. All episodes are streaming on Netflix. Don was not portrayed as a man that had it all figured out and had his shit together. He was a mess at times and you’ll see how far he spirals out of control if you watch Mad Men.
I met John once when I was working at a sports retail shop in LA, and had a long conversation with him. I remember him being such a nice, humble and well spoken person, that if you didn't know who he was, would just think he is the average respectful guy you come across every day.
He had every reason to go astray in the long run but he didn’t. He stayed focused in the end. Can't fucking imagine what he went through after losing his parents. Give yours a long hug and know that they won’t be here forever.

Wow! I lost my mother (as well as others in my family) in my early 30s and I was a wreck for a long, long time. This interview connected with me immensely. I can't imagine being a kid through all that. It's hard enough as an adult when everyone expects you to just suck it up and move on. It really can tweak your brain chemistry in a huge way. I can't imagine what that would like losing both parents so young. It's even hard for adults. It's not just Midwestern. It's society all over the world. Don't talk about your feelings. That's why it's so important that we talk about the difficult issues in our lives and shed light on it, so these wounds can be healed. There's a video with Stephen Colbert and Andrew Cooper having an incredibly moving conversation on the loss of their fathers at young ages. It changes you for life.
So impressed at your openness Jon, that little 10 year old kid losing his mother was understandably a life changing trauma for you. You are a wonderful advocate for others suffering from depression.
This man makes my heart melt. One day I dreamed of him. He was sitting on a corner at a bar being very sad and lonely. After waking up I realized how real this dream actually was. He could absolutely play Bruce Wayne. I mean, no other actor could draw on losing parents like he could. He lived it. Just needs the right people to come along and give it the serious approach again.
Here in Brazil, we are campaigning against depression and suicide, which we call September yellow. It is a delicate disease that must be tackled with serious treatment. And be spread and explained by everyone. Seeing a great and beloved actor, like Jon Hamm talking about his coping, against this silently dangerous disease, was something that struck me. For he knew how to face and respond to depression. It is an example and inspiration for many people who have not yet found a way to face it. Jon, maybe he does not even know it, but for a long time, I pray for him! For God to help him with joy in his heart. God bless you, Jon; with emotional healing and all those who have faced this sickness. Congratulations Jon, for the lovable attitude. For when we speak, we are healed. Jon Hamm was a better Batman in The Town than Ben Affleck was in Batman v Superman and Justice League
He still looks very sad. I lost my dad when I was 13, and just lost my mom 4 months ago. Grief sucks.
That sucks. Sorry to hear that. My mom died in 2011 and it still hurts.

Wow, that’s brutal ::
good for him for speaking up . To many suffer in silence
I have been... for maybe 20+ years.
Only now MAYBE starting to "come around" and think a lot more about it. But you know what? It's the fact that one IS in Depression, or having bouts with clinical Anxiety (capital letters essential) that cause one to BELIEVE: "What good would it do?"
It's even especially more difficult when the financials simply aren't there.
Too*
Definitely..
I’m one of them! 💔😞
“You’re sleeping until 4 o’clock in the afternoon. You’re not ok.”

Hahahah. That's me too.
Love that painting my guy!! Wanderer in the fog 🔥
@Luke bartt Even if you have a job you could still be sleeping until 4 depending on your shift
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you are poor, middle, rich, famous, popular, or got some top position, understand that we are all human and all susceptible to down times and depression. Great to see he battled the issue and seeking help.
Depression is pretty easier to withstand when you can fuck any woman you want the next day.
"The point is, depression in poor people is much worse to have, because you can not afford to skip work, there's anxiety linked to everything and it's real."
Not only that, there is a lack in education in the area they live in or cities poor economy.
It was helpful to see a celebrity with depression talk about it. Most people don't understand what it really is, if they don't have it.
Thats great. Thanks

I can attest to wanting to sleep all day when you're depressed. Cause when you're asleep you dream, you rest, you don't have to deal with life. Your shortcomings, problems. Real or imagined.
I agree.I love sleeping because I will forget the cruel world and evil people for awhile.
you still wake up, and its the bad dreams that get you up, then the day is shot so is you're schedule, then you.....then other humans think you're a lazy fuck off, then more self hatred.....hence..........suicide

It’s not physiological. There’s literally no evidence to support that. They’re called “mental illnesses” because they cannot be tested physically.

i love how he talks about the leg being broken and getting it fix along and comparing it to mental illness. my bestfriend has depression and she tells me time to time that her brain is broken and that she needs to get help but when she tries to reach out to her parents, they just tell her "its all in your head" which just hurts her even more. Thats the stigma that Jon is talking about and that we must, let me rephrase that, have to overcome because there are love ones going through this pain every single day. Not all ilnesses are visible.
It’s good that’s you can support your friend during her depression. You should show her this video :)

Love the cut to Mrs. Clarke. The effort to provide the insight and bring the interview to life. You’re a class act Graham!
Lead with kindness- I like that.
Respect that he is sharing his story
Love this man loved his performance on black mirror as Well such a great guy
Thank you youtube for recommending this. I needed this
Thank you for sharing this difficult part of your life.......My wife & I are big fans of your work......Every time we see Jon Hamm in anything we perk up and say....."JON HAMM!" then we giggle and give a thumbs up to each other......lol. We hope life dishes out some serious peace and tranquility to you. Thank you for contributing to the eventual end of Mental Health Stigma!
Amazing video amazing insight. His comments about sleeping until 4 in the afternoon really hit me hard because sadly it's pretty relatable, but I might try therapy again honestly, we'll see. Much love to Jon Hamm
THE COUCH LOOKS LIKE ITS FLOATING AND ITS VERY UNSETTLING
Gold River it is trippy
Now...yeah you're right wtf
Oh yeah... its weird but i kinda like it!
I think it looks really cool! Very alluring
That is making me dizzy.. and the skanky cushions aren't helping!
Thank you John!!!! This means ALOT.
Seems the Don Draper difficult childhood resonates with his real life. I have just finished the final episode of Mad Men, one of my favourite TV series of all time, it was excellent, Jon Hamm was excellent in it, but the whole cast were excellent. I didn't want Mad Men to end.
Jon hamm is such a amazing actor he deserved more screen time on good omens
This is a feedback that can really break my heart darling, I am grateful, thank you so much for your support and prayers to my career 😇 where are you watching from?

He made me go into depression.
Everyone has a story to tell. That is why I believe in the saying: ”Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about”. Graham is such a good listener.
So many famous artists/creative geniuses lost a parent very early in life.

As a therapist hearing Jon Hamm in David Tennant's podcast is so calming... He had a hard life, but knows really well how to deal with his struggles from what I see.

5:28 I'm on antidepressants as well and that's exactely how it works. I wish I had taken them sooner. My mother also finally realised that there was nothing wrong with these meds and saw the benefit in them for me as well. Maybe it's not for everybody, but it sure ain't drugs that make you a zombie like a lot of people think.
My mom thinks that it'll turn me into a zombie but I'm already a zombie half the time anyways. The other half I can't control myself.
Heartbreaking for ANY one to lose a mum or dad before the age of 17/18 years old. 💔

I really hope he becomes the next Batman. I think he's PERFECT for it!
Because he has dead parents?
+Daniel Greig no. Because he's the front runner for the next Batman.
@@gavinmasterson3256 according to who?
+Daniel Greig nobody I misspoke. He said in interviews recently he's very interested in playing Batman. Now unless you are looking to pick a fight on social media, I recommend you try and have a nice day :-)

Never thought I could relate to a celebrity so much. I lost my father when I was 8, I now suffer with depression although I'm a college graduate with a great paying engineering job.
It's already a great sign of healing !! You are directly and indirectly helping to propagate the solution to deal with depression.

it is difficult to talk about depression
Very!
Graham is quite the underrated interviewer
I always have a hard time understanding how someone Soo successful and loved can suffer from depression. I guess its kind of like addiction, it doesn't care who you are..
Again I’ve said to many people. You can have everything in the world!!! If you suffer from depression that all means nothing. Hugh Hefner could’ve gotten depression and boy did he have it all, well in my mind of course LOL. Depression DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE!! 🙏💪👍
@@BigPete44 true that sir
And he didn't have everything in the world. He lost both parents before he was 21. Think about that.
Astonishing interpretation!! He deserves the Oscar!!!!!!!
That's a depression that is understandable..... so much loss , so young ..... it's the depression that has no reason that is a monster and is very hard to fight
