  • Synthetic Rope OR Steel cable is what gets asked a lot in our 4x4 shop.
Mic explains in short & sweet what is the pros and cons are of each.
    THE WINCH YOU NEED
Over the years Ironman 4×4 has spent significant time developing and improving its range of winches. With the only winches in the market to come from the factory with a breather on the motor as well as many other class-leading features.
Never leave home again without the security and peace of mind offered by an Ironman 4×4 Monster Winch.

Steel cable for the win on our end. We have had to run the cable under the carriage and many other ways to where a rope would be too risky. Maintaining the cable is easier than the rope as well on our end. Both can be equally dangerous but through experience...cable is legit. KEY: You buy a cheap cable or rope...that is where you fail.

Hi Mic, first off great channel you guys at iron man have put together!
I do agree with everything you said regarding the cable and rope. But I disagree with one thing, winch rope when it snaps doesn’t fall to the ground, they still recoil, and can still cause damage although a lot less than a cable. So like you said always follow safe winch practices. Also the ropes are more maintenance, dirt can go i between the fibres, weakening and fray them.
Check out Ronny Dahl’s Video where from about 15:00 in where he snaps a synthetic rope.

If I had the spare cash I would fit a rope to mine purely for the weight.

And the rope is more like to get dirt in it and break and you can't drag rope over rocks

This is 80% wrong. Steel cable is more like 30lbs not 30kg. It is stronger than synthetic not weaker. You can trail fix steel cables. Steel cable is also more weather resistant and won’t melt on a hot winch drum from heavy use or freeze into a block of ice when it gets wet wheeling in the snow. Steel cable can also be used hundreds of times more than a synthetic and will last a lot longer. Synthetic is lighter, slightly safer and doesn’t have the potential to pinch or cut your hands over time. For heavy duty long use go steel. If you have a light vehicle and don’t plan on using your winch much or don’t mind replacing it regularly and want to look cool, go synthetic. It more or less a form or function debate. There is a reason that heavy haulers, contractors and all industrial or commercial users use steel cable and trust me it’s not about the money.
