  • Steel cable vs. synthetic rope, and how to install a winch line on a Warn Zeon is covered in this video. Precautions need to be followed to avoid a catastrophic failure if you're using synthetic cable as a winch line replacement after using steel.
We also talk about Master Pull's concept of "metal-less" rigging. Here's a link to the Master Pull site: www.masterpull.com/

Planning on getting a new winch for my FJ this summer. Thanks for the perfect timing as this was a question I had about the 2 options.

Great informative video, thank you! I switched to synthetic years ago. Never knew I was supposed to clean it and never have- but now I will, thanks to you. That same line from years ago is still going strong today.

Been watching you guys for years. Love the set ups you have. We have a 2015 Limited 4runner, and an 07 FJ TRD. Cant wait to start offroading in your neck of the woods.

I will stick to my aircraft cable thanks. Been running it for 30 years and not one break. It's called maintenance. Oh and also.knowing how to set up a cable correctly. Plus not getting so stuck you put too much strain on the winch. But I have always been a very careful wheeler. Not everyone is. I can see the advantages but i have also seen these ropes snap from touching a tree root. I must just be an old dog that can't learn new tricks.

That's right and my last atv cable lasted 15 years of regular use. Synthetic will be rotten after a year or so in the weather. It has some advantages but way more disadvantages for my needs.

TO WANDERLOST: I am a new subscriber, and have only watched a few of your videos so far, so new to your channel. But, from the very first I got such a very good, positive impression about the two hosts (sorry I don't recall your names). I enjoy your presentations, enjoy your humor, enjoy seeing your interactions and expressions as a couple, and appreciate your partnership in presenting. Having the two of you in the video is really smart and endearing. Well done! Oh, I also enjoy the helpful informative content too. That is very good too. Happy Trails!

Always use plasma rope or synthetic rope as you call it on my FJ weight loss is fantastic good hint though and washing after you’ve used it you can’t go wrong
    Thanks mate

Synthetic line is the only way to go. Had a bad experience with a steel line and synthetic line connected to each other out snow wheeling. I learned then that my synthetic line was worth the money. Thanks for making this video

This is great. I'd love to see you review some options if any exist, to keep road crap and sun form beating on that all the time. Like a cover or something.

Master Pull sells a winch line called the Superline XD. It has a Dyneema cover over the Dyneema winch line that protects it from UV damage, abrasion, and requires less maintenance. It’s what I have installed on my truck. I made an install video about it too.

Thanks for the tip on the 🇺🇲 US made rope👍.
They are a bit 🤌 pricey
but varies depending on length. What length did you use?
My unit has 65' of steel currently. I'd like to add some extra length. 😵‍💫
    Thanks for your reply.

Another pro of synthetic rope is it can be repaired out on the trail by splicing it back together, steel takes longer, or specialized tools to repair the line.

Love the synthetic line and have used it since Day 1. I have not used the soft shackles however-do you find any downside to the soft vs the traditional shackles?

    • @WanderlostOverland
      @WanderlostOverland  2 роки тому

The only concern I find with soft shackles is knowing how to orient the knot.

I think you forget to list the biggest disadvantage of the synthetic one. It is deteriorating if exposed to UV light. So it has an expiration date if you live somewhere sunny.

Yea my buddy was stuck one time while we were wheeling, he didn’t have a winch, but the expiration date on my line was up, I just hadn’t thrown it away yet, so I had to tell him I couldn’t pull him out, he wasn’t happy. He had to come back days later to get it. It was a good line the one time I used it before it expired. I gave it to my brother because he lives in the part of the country that’s not sunny, so it doesn’t expire for him, he’s been using it for over a year.

Exactly. I hate synthetic. It's so dangerous in the mountains where there's always rocks in the way to rub on. I guess it's OK for flat landers that just play in the mud.

So, how much did they pay you to do this commercial for them?
I've had a steel cable on my hydraulic winch for 25 years and it is still in good shape. I see NO reason whatsoever to change and quite a few reasons NOT to change.
