It is the GOAT of cars and I'm in love with that car
I bought mine brand new in November '99. The early ones were Avus Blue as they were having trouble making LeMans Blue at the time. Early ones also didn't have angel eyes nor did they have the 16:9 screen. You also needed to carry oil with you as early ones consumed 1qt/750mi. Great times looking back.

The Roy/Maher record obviously had a huge impact on me. I remember scouring the internet for anything I could learn about it. It is such an honor to be able to hear and share the stories first hand. Thanks for the inspiration Dave!

Awesome you got Dave on the show. Yeah I had the same feeling reading the articles about Roy and reading his book-- seemed like he was going at it too conservatively. We know for sure Roy wouldn't have broken the record without Mr. Maher, at least not on that stint.

Roy is the face of this team, and rightfully so due to the copious background work he did to make their record run possible, but in my mind Dave Maher is the reason they actually achieved it. He pushed Alex to heights I don't even think Alex knew he had in him. Add to it that Dave is so low key about it now? He might be giving Ed a run for coolest Cannonballer on the planet.
I will definitely attempt the cannonball at least once, i can only hope to get lucky enough to make a record time. I’d be proud with 2nd or 3rd. You guys are all truly an inspiration. Thanks to all of you gumballers and rally guys. You lived in a hell of an era!

Yes, but one thing you would need to remember is the amount of fuel that’s going to be burning when you’re trying to hit 180 for that long. The Alpina series burns a serious amount of gas when you take it above 110.
Ahh Love Maher! I wish he told more stories about his driving legs across the central US states. He flewwww and drove pretty aggressively. Roy didn't love that at the time but later thanked him as he raised their average speed quite a bit.

The jackrabbit would have probably destroyed the entire front end at 100+! I live in Tucson Arizona and drive a 528 BMW, I've hit a jackrabbit, a deer, and a dog all going the same speed; the dog lived and just left some fur, the deer knocked my front trim off, and the fucking jackrabbit took the entire front bumper off!

this channel has me wanting to do a cannonball attempt. Mind you i have no delusions of the record, but i wanna make an attempt to get noticed. My plan is a 5.0 f150 crew cab short bed. Figure the aftermarket exists to make the power needed, the drivetrain and suspension parts are stout, with the right mods it handles pretty well, and they have a good record for reliability. Also figure that there are so many pickups like it that its nothing special, its just a pickup truck. Factor the spacious cab to hold all your countermeasures comfortably, add a tonneau cover and you have a great hiding place for a massive fuel cell, and in basic silver with XLT trim, you have tons of deniability. Its a forgettable vehicle. From all the accounts i've seen, it fits the bill pretty well for what you want in a cannonball car.

it does NOT count , some of us cant even legally leave our houses ,so it should not count...so i really dont care otherwise . if you have to run it during a time when the rest of us are legally locked in our houses than it doesnt count , can talk it up all you want , theres nothing special about doin it when everyone else is locked up .

all records have parameters. you say a record is a record, but if they did the trip from Atlanta to LA would you count that? ofcourse not, because the parameters have changed. What about doing the current route but using a hacked tesla autopilot? Its not as simple as you make it out to be. every olympic records has parameters around it for that reason.

the statute of limitations is usually 7 years cuz at the speeds they were going it might be considered felony reckless driving. depends on the state and the laws

I would pick a 2005-2006 Tahoe with a magnusun supercharger, lowered the right amount for handling and to get the vehicles profile lower, with a big enough gas tank in the back to not have to stop once, helper air bags in the back and of course the rest of the supporting mods.. have enough room for someone in the back to have almost 360 degree view, it blends in enough to disappear if needed, has a bigger presence on the road to help push people out of the way,. As long as you can get that truck to do the right average mph safely then I think it’s perfect...
I totally agree, that’s why I said lower it, I think it would take a bit more engineering than I think, but you could forsure get the center of gravity down some. Not sure if a suburban has a longer wheel base but if that could get figured out I think it would be pretty legit.. I think the room and the ability to carry all the gas you need but still be incognito might be a good combo..

Best cannonball car in my opinion would be the c6/c7 corvette.
Good choice performance wise but kind of conspicuous, only holds two so can't do a three man team and not a lot of space for fuel, drinks, food and equipment. Still, I would love to have a go at it in one.

It's real shame about what happened between Alex Roy and Cory the filmwr girl. Im 30 now and remember all those years ago waring for more videos on the 32hr UA-cam channel. I found the old version of the film online and it was great. I also bought the book 12 years ago I think. Well written and funny. I am a bit curious why there isn't more record breaking videos online?
The other record breakers weren't filming a movie about the record run they were focusing on the record run. the latest version of APEX is worth a watch it gives a nod to those that beat the record after Alex and Dave, unfortunately it was released right before Doug and Arne's run so no mention of them

Ed, will you clarify for some people when this run was made? Some think this is the most recent run that was made during the pandemic, and are calling it illegitimate.
This was clearly not the most recent, he even stated he waited a year to even talk about it. Plus he mentions during that 1 year wait was when Richard Rawlings broke the record. So this was several records ago.

Last time I was this early people were not hating on someone for breaking the cannonball record. Every generation used everything they could to their advantage and were nothing compared to the original drivers. Point A to point B, period.

Ed broke their record. But they were the first to break a decade standing record that many had thought to be illegitimate. Roy set out to not only prove it was indeed possible but that it could be done faster too. Since then more and more attempts have been made and the record continues to be shattered
Try hard. To set a canon ball record I would think you need to be in a canon ball race.
I'm curious how NDAs work in this scenario. They obviously broke traffic laws in every state they traveled through and NDAs don't protect you from that. If they did, then every drug dealer and criminal organization would have everyone sign NDAs. I would love to see the court docs and evidence if someone tried to take something like this to court. It seems like a non-enforceable waste of paper.

I would definitely pick a Tesla for a cannonball car! You probably would only have to charge like 3-5 times
Don’t forget charging takes almost 30 minutes per time, that’s almost 2-3 hours of charging just left on the table
Also a Tesla may get 350 miles in one charge with regular driving, but I’d guess maybe closer to 25-50 miles at almost full throttle cruising
At those speeds you'd need to charge a bit more than that. Kyle from Out of Spec Motoring was featured on here a while back and talked about his experiences doing a Cannonball in a Tesla Model 3.

it does NOT count , #1 does NOT start at the right location so that can change the time by a few hours ...#2 does NOT end at the right location again can change the time by a few hours ...#3 to be a cannonball record needs to be done during the cannonball event*....otherwise it does NOT matter ...#4 anyone can claim anything ...! plus pointless to keep it a secret for a year only makes it less believable .... many of the people that i know and (we race for a living) have all talked about this and we all are in agreement that for multiple reasons .. it does NOT count , if you believe any of this than i have a statue of liberty for sale . 20yrs ago my dad drove from upstate new york to the mexi-cali border near san diego in 26hrs and several of the hwys yall are using didnt even exist if this counts than my dads record counts and as far as i know is unbroken ...whos to say otherwise , i myself have broke and reset the miami to atlanta record about a dozen times in the last 20years , all these records dont mean shit unless your fully documenting them and doin them at the appropriate times like during the event . how can u claim a cannonball record if done outside the cannonball event , truth is you cant becuz it does NOT and should NOT count , yall can talk this up all you want but theres reasons many real racers get a good laugh at some of the shit people claim , i love the stories and thats about all most of these are ...
