    It's almost summer! That means it's time to make a new summer dress, and I've been wanting to try out Simplicity 9464 since it first went on sale earlier this year. It feels only fitting that I'm making this 1940s style dress using a fabric printed with a 1940s character!

    Rebecca, I love your channel. I've just started, again, sewing for myself. I used to, a long time ago, but now I'm a short, round, (my husband says in all the right places) middle aged woman. You give me great ideas for how to alter patterns. Because I never fit the sizes they state.

      My wife had the same problem, but years ago, we went to a seamstress, who drafted a custom pattern block that we now us to modify the patterns to fit my wife. Money well spent.

    I love the Dumbo fabric and the dress is super cute.
    The Closet Historian recently did a video about "tulip sleeves" and the Dumbo dress would look extra with tulip sleeves. (& I think the tulip sleeves is a 1040's thing , too!)

    On Simplicity patterns having ridic wide shoulders - all Simplicity patterns are made for a B-cup. So a person w a size 24 who wears a b-cup might have shoulders like a quarterback. A lot of folks try to instead find a pattern based on their upper-bust measurement (instead of full-bust) and then do a FBA, but unfortunately I don't see a lot of Big 4 patterns with that measurement listed :-/.
    Otoh, I haven't picked up a new commercial pattern in a long time, cuz I started drafting my own patterns for my plus-sized bod. Which I'm not sure I'd recommend - it took a ridic long time bc I had to flat-pattern instead of drape, and a lot of flat pattern calculations don't work for plus-sized figures, so it was a SLOG to get all that figured out.

      I am in the process of trying to learn pattern making/design and how to alter things for this exact reason. GG bust, short torso. I just want clothes to fit right!

      I am a DDD cup and have the shoulders of a 5 year old. Seriously, I can't even keep a purse strap up on my shoulders. So fun to alter for that.

    • @lenabreijer1311
      @lenabreijer1311 2 роки тому

      This is why I started drafting my own patterns a long time ago. I wasn't B cup after the age of 14. I was skinny with big boobs and everything that fitted over the bust hung like an oversized sack every where else . I have a couple of 60s pattern drafting books which worked well. Once you have a basic body pattern with no ease you can use that to alter commercial patterns which saves you a lot of work.

      So me that are small over shoulders and back, a G cup and size 14 - 16 och short torso should then just make my own patterns from scratch looking on their pictures I guess

    In my quest to organize my life I’ve started thinking about it a lot. So might I suggest that you label the sleeves and write yourself a note what you did and why for future reference.

    Omigod, I own this pattern and I've made 4 dresses with it. I also just cut the button plackets off the pattern on the back and also went with a center back seam. For the closure, I moved the button plackets to the front on the non-stretch-fabric dresses and made two of them out of stretchy fabric (Pro Tip: if you have big boobs, cutting the darts anyway helps so the design on the fabric doesn't look distorted) and they're incredibly comfy and nice. I'm working on one right now with mermaids on it and shell buttons down the bodice center front. It actually fits me pretty nicely in the shoulders, but I have broad shoulders, lol.

    Very pretty dress especially the sleeves. Looks like they strike a good balance between poof...and being able to fit a cardi or raincoat over top (an essential requirement here in Scotland)
    The snap closure is probably a legacy from the original 40's pattern as metal for zips wasn't available during the war and they were in very short supply. The 'extra' button closure was possibly to enable the neckline to open enough to pull the dress over the head without ruining elaborately set hair. Materials weren't really being used for decorative stuff. Although this pattern has a ruffle! ... a fabric eating extravagance! 😂

  • @Aminathius

    As someone who is on the bigger side, I really appreciate the extra ease. Sometimes it means I don’t have to do much more than add seam allowance to make it fit me right, whereas if it didn’t have the crazy amount of ease I would have to do a lot more in regard to sizing it up. This pattern specifically is a good example of that; I barely had to add anything for it to fit me (I used the bodice from view A and the skirt from view B!).

  • @AnniCarlsson
    @AnniCarlsson 2 роки тому +3

    The weight of the skirt make the waist go lower down then on mock up. That's my guess

  • @ReinaElizondo
    @ReinaElizondo 2 роки тому +3

    For the sleeve tightness, maybe some of the ease that you contoured out of the bodice to the dart was for that kind of sleeve ease? Although you solved nicely for it in the sleeve adjustment. I haven't really seen anyone deep dive into those kinds of ease from a historical standpoint. But the types of ease or shapes can look unfamiliar in shoulders and sleeves depending on the era, as you noted for the shoulder pad considerations. It'd be really cool to see more about the retro trends to that kind of thing. And which parts are trends vs. preference.

    My daughter loves this dress! I think the side waist being low could be the skirt fabric pulling it . I find that for commercial patterns I'm often taking an inch out of the bodice between the shoulder and the bust so whoever they're making them for it ain't me either!

  • @davidhutchison3343

    I sew plus sized dresses for my wife, and have also found that I can do away with the closers on most of her dresses. Its one advantage of being plus sized :). The ease at her waist allows the dress to fit over her bust without needing to be opened. I use to added belt loops so she can sinch in the waist if she wants too, but she hates tight clothes, so never did. As I hate doing zippers, it makes sewing her dresses a lot easier and quicker.
    Totally agree that the ease in Simplicity patterns is extreme. My wife is a size 26, and the size 24 pattern still needs to be taken in slightly for a good fit.

  • @roxannlegg750
    @roxannlegg750 2 роки тому +1

    Im SO glad you did this video - and yes - I dont understand whats with pattern making companies making larger sizes with insane long shoulder seams and arm scye curves totally off. But iu think the underarm is that one inch too low because you increased the bodice length by that one inch - you needed to then raise the arm scye as well. But yes - they always forget - just because we have a plus sized body - and generous boobs, does not = giant wide shoulders!!
    And with the side poppers/buttons...i have 3 1940's dresses and they ALL have a side zip or opening - not a CB one. Most of my sewing is retro - and side openings are normal for them. But it doesnt work on our plus sized body as it cant take the tension that comes with extra body fullness and movement. If youre really thin - AKA - wartime rationing thin...it works - but not on us plus sized gals very well. Great video - loved it. Nice ot see some vintage sewing!

    Girl, go off on Simplicity! The amount of ease in modern simplicity is so ridiculous. They have a significant amount of ease in some of there vintage patterns but it is way way worse in reproduction/modern.

  • @CommanderFox

    "In ThE uSuAl WaY" I hear dress historians crying in the distance 😂
    Also question: Have you used vintage sewing patterns before (like not reproductions) and what kind of differences have you noticed? Like do they also include a ridiculous amount of east for example?

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  2 роки тому +1

      I've only used one (it was last year's Bambi dress), and it was one that I also had a repro of, so I was mostly comparing the two. The problem with vintage patterns for me is that they're so far off my size that I would basically have to redraft them anyway. If I remember correctly, though, the vintage one did not have as much ease as the repro.

    Do you sew from the measurement of your high bust and then do FBA"s? This is why you always have extra fabric in the armpit I think. On the bodice, the points of the darts are pointing to the top of the breast and not the apex. I am only watching, the sound is off because The

      Oh yikes! I'll check and see what happened. I'm pretty sure there were only supposed to be three ad breaks in the entire video!

    I find that the added ease on commercial patterns sometimes makes it so the garments will actually fit me. It would be great if they just modified the sizing to match the dimensions. When you say things like "no body wants this" or "line backer pattern blocks" when the pattern just isn't made for your body type, that can alienate some viewers. I know you're probably being a little hyperbolic as well. Over all I really enjoy your videos but that type of language really rubs me the wrong way and I know I can't be the only one. I hope this just makes you consider your words next time but I don't want to make you feel bad.

      You're totally right, and I will try to be better about that in the future. And I agree with you about the ease - they should just say that the patterns fit larger sizes! I'm sure we would all love that!
