- I got a whole bunch done on my 1950's tulip dress this week, and it's now nearly complete! In particular in this video, I will be going over how to make buttonhole and button plackets, as well as how I made my tulip pockets.

Looks absolutely adorable even without sleeves. I really need to work on more stuff like this that can just pretty much be worn anywhere.
The back poses such a problem. SO many things you could try, but I wouldn't want to risk it on the actual fabric. At my house, this would go in the More Questions Than Answers box. Much like "It's always the quiet ones. . . ," it's always the patterns that you think will be quick . . . ! It's beautiful so far. I really like how the pockets came out! NICE!
OMG, so cute! I say put a seam down the bodice back; the binding will now have a seam, but it won't be noticed.

I was going suggest dealing with the gap by altering the shoulder slope too but I'd completely forgotten about the doubble neck dart which is so vintage. You're going to have to redo a small piece of bias but your work is neat and the back of the neck is such a common place for a bias join that I think you'll be glad you took the time ❤
I really Love the pockets, and I can't wait for some ideas for making belts! And what a cute ending with a visiting lions tail 😂
I love the floral fabric, the contrast of the bias tape, and the whole tulip theme!
The pockets look so cute. Your ideas to fix the back make more sense than what it do. Sew a small bit of thin elastic to the back of my neck. Mine might not be the prettiest but it's easy 😂
Also it's crazy how much the binding elevates and finishes the look!
Excited to see the sleeves!! The Closet Historian does a fantastic self drafted puff tulip sleeve and I think those will look so cute on this dress. Also, love this project. I have an apron that is very similar with the tulip pocket that my mom made in her 8th grade home ec class almost 60 years ago so seeing this dress makes me feel very happy ❤
Another option is altering flowers with the vintage buttons. It’s a cute dress
Way back in historical times, seems like I recall darts in the shoulders. Pretty much all the time. I wonder if that kept the neck in order? No matter... I love the cute factor of this dress!! Using hooks & eyes at the waist is brilliant.
Darts at the neck was how my custom made suit jacket was shaped. Also a lot of my blouse patterns.
Definitely! Very common in the higher necklines back then in the front. Thanks for reminding me about the use of them in the back to - I'd completely forgotten! I have to deal with this issue occasionally too so nice to have another way to solve it.
This is looking amazing! I love seeing how you're working through this project to use stash instead of buying the more comfortable or quick solution. Particularly when making decisions around buttons or other closure solutions.
One thing I found out from experience, how successful tulip sleeves are depends entirely on how heavy or light the fabric is. I made several versions a couple of years ago when they were all the rage and if the fabric is too heavy they simply don't hang correctly, whether long or short. You really need a fairly lightweight cotton/fabric to make them hang and move properly.
Darts in the neck each side of the centre back works very well. Losen the bias binding at the back, make the darts and sew it back on making a join at the centre back.
A tip for buttons that are spaced widely: to avoid gaps # install snaps, being careful not to catch the front layer of fabric. I've done this on a few shirts that I altered, and it works quite well.
Around the bust I always add a tiny snap closure on the inside between the buttons. Even though you didn't go with the buttons, it's just an idea! 😊
Lovely. Looking forward to learning about tulip sleeves
I love it! A tiny magnet closure like those one uses on a tiny purse would be good to hold up the middle petal?
When fixing the back neck I'd leave cutting the binding til the very last thing, after doing a dart you might also want to cut the fabric a little to take out some of the height, then you'd want that little extra binding again.
It's coming out absolutely gorgeous!
Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Ha, thought you would, but I know I wouldn't think and cut it, then really regret it!!
I do my shirt facings the same way, but normally machine stitch them, as the stitching is a feature on the front of the shirt. You end up with a strong placket for the shirt front, with enclosed raw edges, so a very neat finish.
Love this dress - might be my next project for my wife's birthday present - if I can find the right fabric
Yes to the belt! This is a sweet dress.
It is looking so cute so far! I actually love it even without the sleeves. The materiallooks so soft and comfy, I bet this would be lovely to lounge and read a book outside in, lol. I'm so curious as to how the tulip sleeves come out!
Would shoulder darts fix the back neck line? LOVE the pockets!
No idea! I think it would be the same amount of work as a dart at the center back though. And thanks!
Those pockets are really cute!
Im waiting for tulip sleeves. i want to switch out some non cute sleeves for pretty ones. Nice job so far.
The back neck problem can be fitted through the shoulder seams.
I was wondering if that was the case
I'm glad you nixed the buttons since they would be off center. Love the pockets!
OMG I never fold far enough to topstitch/stitch in the ditch. working on a shirt right now that is DEFINITELT going to have some quick whip stitching along the plackets (though to be fair, this time it's because I was too lazy to pin)
Omg your tulips made me want to make a big hot pad of a lotus!!!!
Dress looks so stinking cute!
It does not need a belt, that will just make you look shorter and wider (horisontal line that really draws the eye) as is, it is very flattering and skims your waist with the perfect fit.
Looking forward to seeing it with sleeves😊
Thanks! My waist is significantly smaller than any other part, which is why I like belts. I don't care about looking shorter, since I'm 5'10".
I imagine the newer pink buttons would have a tendency to get caught on the button hole and break off petals.
This dress is so freaking cute! Great job!
I wonder how solid pink tulip pockets would look with the bias tape
Probably still very cute!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support! ❤️
I been looking forward to this
It's so adorable!!!
For the back issue, to me it looks like it stretched during the binding process. In my slightly professional opinion you could take it out of the shoulder seam by taking the excess just off the back piece.
Could you adjust the top of the back part of the shoulder seams to address the back neck issue?
Either way, it means messing with the binding.
I love that flowery fabric, its dainty and has perfect pastel colors. As always you nail it on the head, looking forward to seeing it all finished, it will be beautiful. I would like to ask a question cuz I just know you will have the answer for it. I was at a different site today & they were showing dress styles, one of the categories was Bohemian & some of them reminded me of Gypsie clothing that was worn back in the day. Question: Is Bohemian the very same style of Gypsie clothing? Thank you Lady Rebecca I love to watch your videos. I think you make beautiful clothing.
Thanks! Unfortunately I have no idea about your question! I would imagine it would depend on the various groups' origin.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Thank you Lady Rebecca, I've been doing a little research. So far, they are related but there are many others as well. Thank you for always being kind and answering my questions.
The dress with the daisies you’re wearing in the intro is super cute! Did you make it? 💖
Thanks, I did! There's a video on it from last summer - it's my Selkie-inspired dress.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions lovely 💖 thank you so much
It's beautiful. But I can't sew for sour apples. Where can I buy one?
Thanks! I think you'd have to go back in time!
I also have noticed you keep having to take a side dart out of your bodices,! Im wondering if you did a full bust adjustment to your patterns if it would help to get rid of that excess fabric in the armscye. Although maybe a small bust adjust would work better since your bust to waist measurement is similar?¿?¿
I've tried a full bust adjustment a few times, but it never seems to work for me. I also don't think it would work with a small bust adjustment, since my bust is 8" larger than my waist.
I just looked at my pattern making book for reference and it says the “normal”ratio for a body is actually a 10-12” difference between bust and waist…. I feel like you should try the small bust adjustment!!!
@@dillonnapier1239 weird - most simplicity etc patterns have a much smaller bust to waist ratio - I think usually around 7".
Couldn't you sew both of the pink buttons alternating down the front? They look to be the same color.
I'm guessing you hadn't gotten to the end of the video yet, but I realized no buttons was the way to go.
I’m surprised you don’t have a button collection from your Mom or Grandmother. I have tons
My mom doesn't sew, and my grandma just had super random buttons. I have a ton from a friend of mine though.
I know next to nothing about sewing…. That being said…. Can you make the back of the neck, sort of scoop to fix the excess fabric.
Hope that is possible, might be less work.
Tulip buttons? The 50s had all kinds of themes. I agree that not using buttons was the smart decision but now I want to see if they exist.
