  • Every year, I love to make myself a new Christmas dress. And it's even better when I can make the whole dress for under $4! This year's Christmas dress is a vintage style jumper dress made from a thrifted plaid tablecloth, and in this video, I'll be covering how to match plaids across princess seams, and how to make the most of a limited amount of fabric, while still being able to match your plaids.
Have you made yourself anything fun for Christmas?
Check out last year's upcycled tablecloth dress here: • Thrift Flip! // I made...

Jumper dresses (I'd call them pinafores) are so useful - sewists wear them often but you rarely see them on the high street. Love the pattern matching content in this project!

I think I went into it in more detail in one of the older videos, but to be honest, I can't remember which! I'll try to detail it again the next time I do it.

It looks super cute, but I think you should make a brooch that has a few holly leaves and red holly berries in the middle and then attach this brooch to the bodice of the dress. That would accentuate the Christmas vibe of the dress.

Pleating the skirt was the right move, and wonderful plaid matching, especially as it has Princess seams.

I ended up making myself a plaid dress this winter too. The plaid is green, white, and blue (so a bit more winter themed than the traditional red Christmas plaid). It has 3/4 sleeves and a skirt that hits just below the knee.
I'm very happy with how it turned out in the end, but it felt slightly cursed when I was sewing it. I got covid in the middle of making it and then I guess my sewing mojo was off when I recovered because I kept making dumb mistakes. I had to rip out more seems than I care to admit, but it got there in the end.
I've been wearing it with some tights and my Irish cable knit sweater.

Very cute! It amazes me that you went for pattern-matching on the front princess seams. I wouldn’t have even considered doing so, but if anyone can match a plaid like that with those curves, it’d be you. Nicely done 👍🏻

Pattern matching plaid with princess seams is definitely a thing.... I just line up the waist line on a stripe and adjust from there and make sure my pieces are symmetrical, if I have enough fabric I'll try to make sure that it doesn't look too weird at the curves and call it good enough...
That turned out so cute! I'm starting to get more into pinafores myself, easier to keep a skirt up on narrow hips when it's not being held up by a waistband and instead hangs off my shoulders!
This year's xmas craft is making everyone a fabric drawstring bag with a fridge magnet with the clip on it for safety glasses/sun glasses/readers cause the only thing worse than not being able to find your eyewear is finding it's gotten scratched to heck in the toolbox/glove compartment from banging around unprotected. So now everyone gets a basic pair of safety glasses in a bag that can be clipped or stuck somewhere safe. So far the rabbit has permitted me to sew three of them and cut out half a dozen more from stash fabric, and I'll be making at least a dozen in total for family and friends, then after that my next project for me is a purple linen walking skirt, then the next thing I make from the rest of that linen will be a kirtle dress now that I've got a working pattern... I'll also be making Secret Pants proof of concept out of the remains of a martial arts hakama I wrecked through overuse and lack of reinforcement, and will be finishing a new hakama I started about 8 years ago now that I remember how to deal with the pleats.

You did such a good job pattern matching this dress!!! I love how you did the bodice, and the pattern choice you made for pleating the skirt.
    SUPER GOOD JOB! BRAVO!!
I have a gray and black velvet houndstooth that I was going to cut into just a straight skirt to wear to a Cantata, and my youngest came to me and wanted to know if I was finally going to make the Other Mother's outfit from Coraline . I'm glad she stopped me. I hadn't even thought about it, and that fabric is perfect for one of the outfits where the Other Mother no longer dresses like the Mother.
I have a LOT of other Christmas skirts in various stages of being made, I guess it's time to pick one and finish it. I'm feeling like plaid or velvet this year. All of those options are completely uncut, though. I guess I best get on with it, whatever it is.
    BEAUTIFUL JUMPER!!!

    Christmas projects.
I was looking at extra wide quilt backing flannel for a couple of future quilt projects and stumbled onto a 15 yard bolt for just a little more than the usual price for one of the 3 yard cuts I need for my quilts🎉. I will have enough flannel for 4 quilts now. Before I use it in my quilt though, I really want to test the quality… it would suck to make an expensive, time consuming quilt top then back it with crappy fabric. Soooo…. My Christmas projects are flannel night gowns, pajamas and a circle skirt which I plan to wear the heck out of this winter to get a good idea of whether this fabric is any good or not.

I did love that red buttoned panel, but yeah, I guess it would make wearing a red shirt more difficult. Congrats on the new dress! You and Lion take great Christmas cards together. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Such a pretty dress! I would love to have that tablecloth for my table!! 😆 I'm knitting a striped cardigan in shades of red, mauve & cream. It's a work in progress, since I'm designing as I go. I already knit one sleeve in the stripe that goes perpendicular to the body, but since it is a dropped sleeve, I'm considering knitting the other sleeve with the stripes going lengthwise down the sleeve, and then deciding which looks better. Not sure which way to go. ❤

With pleats, I pin the ends or sides and then pin middle point to middle point. Then I do the same in the two new sections. I follow this by either dividing again or pleating depending on width of fabric to be pleated to nonpleated fabric. If that makes sense.
