There is nothing stopping you to wear gloves and hats and just a simple nice dress, skirt and blouse, and nice pair of shoes on a daily bases today. I do it and I can’t care less what those wearing sweat pants and sneakers to go everywhere think. If many of us start wearing a dress everyday perhaps others will take the cue. Fashion is dictated by some regular people wearing something and making it a habit. I would not dare to go to the grocery store in my pyjamas or sports clothes. Those are for sleeping and fitness activities only. But then again, some would wear my pjs as a summer dress for what they call “special occasion.” 😂 I simply find the way most people dress today horrendous and unflattering.
This is the reason why im learning how to sew. Back then almost all know how to sew their own clothes. Lots of vintage sewing tutorials/youtubers nowadays.

I am 43, and I dress up every day. I am the owner and founder of my private therapy practice. I live in my world; my office looks like a 1958 living room, and my patients live there. My son is 21 and my daughter is 20. They are both in college, and they always say they're surprised how their roommates leave the dorm room, looking like they haven’t showered. My husband always dressed dapper and supported my decision to require our kids to look polished and well-groomed when leaving the house.

Thanks for the lovely video. I have photos of my mother and aunt dressed like those beautiful women. It was surely a time when people cared what they looked like.
I am in my 50's now, but remember that my mother and grandmother dressed this way. My Grandmother was 5' 1" and weighed 110lbs .... She dieted everyday and brought my mother and I up with the adage ..... "Men don't go for chunks of chocolate unless it is on a cake". She also never wore trousers as they were for men .... Even today, I wear denim skirts rather than jeans. You never left the house without perfume, earrings, mascara, and lipstick. Handbags and shoes matched. You wore stockings and heels (still do). I know a lady 104 years old she still looks good in shorts and a nice polo shirt. She is beyond FABULOUS!!Her secret, she owned a ski lodge thats exercising daily and it paid off!!
It’s a real eye opener. I think the 40’s was the most glamorous time period, especially in women’s fashion. Ladies looked so well put together even just to grocery shop or grab lunch with one another. Most folks dress like basketball players and yoga instructors now, if not pajamas and bedroom slippers. Probably an unpopular opinion, but lounge clothes are so intimate (?) to me.. I would never parade around town letting just anyone see me in my “comfys”, no makeup and unmade hair..to me, its for bedtime, cleaning and _Im not leaving the house_ days. Im young but very old fashioned I guess, lol. I really wonder what’s next..

The men were kinda attractive back then. They were so fine…god I could be swooning over…Errol Flynn or Clarke Gable…even though he was a closeted homosexual and homophobic at the same time lmao. 🌈🌈🌈
Thank you!! That was, to say the least, refreshing. I remember looking forward as I grew up through the 40s and 50s to getting old enough to dress like a lady. Then the later 60s happened...
How wonderful it was, to see Americans who had an American culture. Black, White, Asian- they were all Americans, and took pride in being so. Now we're all racially divided, and America has splintered into different ethnic cultures, to the detriment of us all. What beautiful women, and how proudly they carried themselves!
@@jackriggs1108 How many stupid pills did you swallow. The era your celebrating US was under strict race laws & segregation, Jim Crow & Ku Klux Klan along with voter suppression thru poll tax was common. Ever heard of WW2 or the holocaust all from same wunderwaffen times.

Nowadays they say they want to be comfortable so I guess having half your ass hanging out the back of your pants is comfortable along with a hoody so they can't see your face while stealing from Walmart.
I was born when my dad was 40 years old. So, even though I wasn't a part of this generation, I was familiar with it. My mom had a foot pedal sewing machine. She had tons of patterns and she did make them from start to finish. She cooked and taught my sisters to cook. The still shot of the woman for this video looks incredibly like my mother. She could easily pass as her sister. Women had lots of beautiful clothes designs and they were all tasteful and quite appealing. Men pretty much all looked the same. Every man wanted to look like Cary Grant and talk big, like John Wayne. My uncle Dub was the spitting image of Lee Marvin - you could not tell the two apart and he even had the same voice. This was the best time to be alive in the world. The nation was reeling with pride and united as one large tribe. Politeness, respect and manners were signature characteristics of the day. How horribly far we have fallen. We are not a better people or more enlightened. I like how George Washington and others of his day used to say, "If we educate our children apart from the knowledge of Jesus Christ, we will have done nothing more, than created clever devils". And that is exactly what has happened. Thank you for the good memories.
Jim Crow laws & segregation ring a bell ftard. You might have forgotten american fascist movement of that time was sweeping the US along german centric german american bund. On Feb 20 1939' NYC Madison Square Garden hosted more than 20,000 marching americans celebrating promoted Nazi propaganda.
This is such an awesome presentation. Back then men were men and women were women. Zero gender confusion. And as you said. Folks had self respect and respect for those around them. ..... you could even set on the fender of a car without it denting because it was made from Bethlehem steel/metals and they were made in America. Geeez. I miss those days. 😖😥
Zero civil rights awareness dude. You must have forgotten US Jim Crow laws, segregation & colored only drinking fountains & restrooms. Not to mention Sun down towns & sodomy laws. No reproductive rights for women.
YEP! Today's world is a circus FREAK show with massive tats, rings in every body part. When you can't tell if it's a male, female. Now it's non binary and female, male impersonators. Is it any wonder why the world is a MESS. NO boundaries on anything. 🤔
I so miss the 50's. Most everyone dressed nicely, had manners and were respectful. There was little to no graffiti or trash laying about. People took pride in their neighborhoods and towns / cities. Crime was mostly "across the tracks" if at all and nothing like it is today. Schools taught the three "R's" rather than CRT, genderism and all the crap that has no place in our schools today. Kids did better in school and were not attached to all the electronics we have now which dissocializes them. Phones were not necessary to stay in touch. Drugs were almost unknown except those prescribed by a doctor. It was so nice to see a girl / woman in a dress, too, rather than seeing them with clothing so tight they might as well not bother dressing at all. I am no prude, but it was more interesting trying to guess what someone looked like under the clothing rather than already knowing. Lots of good comments below.
Jim Crow laws in the 50's along with race laws & segregation enters the chat. You forgot the nice black lists for americans who ran afoul the commie h8tr Sen. Joe McCarthy who along with the HUAAC hunted for commies under every bed in the US. Then the Cold War btwn US & Soviet Union with atomic warfare hovering over the planet was comfy.
I began dressing like a proper lady for biblical reasons. I wasn't expecting it, but I couldn't believe how much respect people paid for this-men opening doors, mothers asking me to watch their child while they went to the restroom, and giving me the best service...what a blessing. God knows best 💜✝️💜
I have noticed too! The more feminine and ladylike I dress, the more doors are held for me. Men do not often hold doors for other men or masculinized women. Even with a pair of jeans, if I have on a frilly blouse and nice shoes and jewelry, this happens as well.
My mum Rose was a teenager in the 40s, and as a child I remember her doing her hair, putting lipstick on, and she would never leave the house unless she was immaculately dressed, and presented. I have been told that I do the same, hair, lipstick, clothes in 2023, and have had my bags carried to the bus stop, compliments made politely, and smiles given to me. I see no reason not to continue, and it brightens peoples day.
I still dress up and people give me compliments all the time and I didn’t realize isn’t normal anymore for a woman to dress up just to go to the market. I learned from my mother and mom’s friends who always wear dresses, heels and dressy clothes ❤
We can complain about "kids today", but truth be told, they're OUR kids and grandkids (and great grandkids). Someone allowed their daughters to go to the store in pajama bottoms and slippers. Someone thought it was ok for their sons to go out with sagging pants. A fashion statement is one thing, but a total disregard of self, or family, pride is something WE let happen.
I think it's worse than that. Girls go in mini skirts and shorts like underwear and tattoos all over and their hair their mentality. But you are right, they are a generation that was not brought up right.
that pointing out societal decay opening ... absolute legend
Ha, hah! Thanks - (sometimes it just has to be said!)

And a lot of common sense which is so badly needed.

Absolutely stunning elegant and beautiful what’s happening with fashion today terrible bring back the beautiful elegant style ❤️
Loved the styles and the care women took in their choices. So much more feminine than today’s styles.
💯% !!! Wish I had a time machine! I'd be GONE, baby gone!
People had less clothes but they were much better quality. Fast fashion has a lot to answer for.
Agree...fast fashion has a lot to answer for right along with fast food.
Look at the effort people made for each other ❤
The women were so elegant and modest.
Elegant and all healthy looking.
I learned from my mother and mom’s friends who always wear dresses, heels and dressy clothes ❤
...and do their backs hurt now?
Classy, well-dressed ladies. Compare and contrast to the last 40 years in 'MURICA
Everyone an absolute doll❤
We can complain about "kids today", but truth be told, they're OUR kids and grandkids (and great grandkids). Someone allowed their daughters to go to the store in pajama bottoms and slippers. Someone thought it was ok for their sons to go out with sagging pants. A fashion statement is one thing, but a total disregard of self, or family, pride is something WE let happen.
I think it's worse than that. Girls go in mini skirts and shorts like underwear and tattoos all over and their hair their mentality. But you are right, they are a generation that was not brought up right.
Had to come here and share with my daughter the styles. Love this era of fashion
Even the car designs had class. Agree the woman at 7:20 could have been a model.
Wow, even their snow outfits were glamorous!
7:23 is the absolute stunner of them all!!! Wow!
I can just imagine her grandkids looking at that picture today: "Grandma! You were HOT!"
@@PlasmaCoolantLeak I was thinking the exact same thing!
I agree!
They had great hair styles and were very well dressed in those days , society today has definitely degenerated.
