- Dr. Colleen Darnell discusses the religious significance of incense in ancient Egypt, including the Divine Birth scenes of Hatshepsut and the maritime expedition to Punt during her reign. New Kingdom tomb paintings, redolent of scents make an appearance, as does the alchemist Maria of Alexandria. Sponsored by Penhaligons, www.penhaligons.com.

Having a portrait of yourself like that is such a power move
Nice profile picture!
Yes, I love it
Is it meant to imitate Tamara de Lempicka??
Or narcissistic.
Having a lovely portrait of yourself while lounging elegantly on a gorgeous couch...that’s goals honestly. You look like a 1920s publication for cosmetics. Your face and intelligence just exudes boss woman energy.
Her dress is stunning...I love the colour.
Legitimate definition
Honestly if they ever made a podcast I'd never listen to anything else.
Liking and commenting so they see this and actually do it.
Her and Dr. Janega GO
When the peacock feather fan popped up I started wondering if there was an ongoing joke throughout the episode where every few minutes the setting became just a little more extra. I was half expecting you to be wearing a crown by the end of the episode. :)
the portrait of yourself is giving me isabella rossellini's house and BDE in Death Becomes Her vibes
I love you Colleen Darnell. You are one of the best commentators or narrators I have ever heard. You speak so naturally and clearly and at such a perfect pace and you can understand every word. Such a great roll model for anyone in media of any description. A pleasure to listen to. Everything you do is do well delivered.
I've never seen a modern day woman be able to pull off the look of the 1920s as FLAWLESSLY as you do.i can't wait for the next video. So informative and well done
I would love to see a video about how the ancient egyptians made perfumes & other scent & beauty products. What sort of ingredients & scents did they like throughout different eras?
Seconded
Egyptians described the ingredients of their perfume at Temple Edfu. The french stole it and made it
Awesome! I’ve been missing your videos!
Thank you, Doctor Darnell. A most welcomed lesson. Easily digestible, presented in such an elegant and graceful manner, from a beautiful setting. Absorb some knowledge, soak in the vintage aesthetic. Wonderful.
Looking forward to your next.
I just love history, and when it comes to Egypt, I just get lost in it............ I feel that the fact that the kings and queens have been preserves till now and we can actually see their dead bodies and their reconstructions and etc....... etc..... Makes it even more fun........ Because then we can find out a lot of information..... Whereas in other civilizations.......most of the things have to be estimated....... Really Egyptian civilization is greatt
Preserved* till
So when is Penhaligon introducing into their trade routes collection their solid Egyptian perfume in the Dr. Colleen Darnell 1920s egyptomania themed refillable compact? We need to know :)
thanks for doing this video and making this material so much more relatable!
Love the aesthetic of your channel - and the information! Its such a win-win for the eyes and the brain.

Hatshepsut was so awesome that the ancient Egyptians were like “you’re god’s daughter” I only can wish to be so cool
Amazing insight for the use of incense, the smells and the perfumes used during Ancient Egypt... I actually find using incense is a great way of cleansing the home, to get rid of negativity and to bring the flow of light and positivity back within the comfort of my environment. Great video 🙏✨❤️

I loved this! I'm currently researching the different perfumes people wore in ancient Egypt, so I can replicate them. Mendesian is first! I may start it tomorrow.

Thank you for bringing up this great subject. I am totally looking forward to your announced series. I consider perfume and scent to be somewhat underrated as means of insight into a culture :)

Vie, Santé, Prospérité✨, (happy to see Vintage Egyptologist back with this great, exquisite episode...). Thank you💖 🌻🍀
Your painting reminds me of "Young Lady with gloves" by Tamara de Lempicka. It's awesome and thank you for your efforts to make ancient Egypt known for its truths and not only its myths ❤️
This is a fascinating channel!! I just subscribed!
Fierce&beautiful 🧡
I revisited the video where u watched the mummy, was looking for a link to your 2018 book, found this.
Much much better.
Still got a book to find and read but for now I'll be happily distracted.
I love your videos! can you do one on what the ankh means?
❤❤❤ I absolutely LOVE this!!! Ancient Egypt and perfume are 2 of my favorite areas of study so this is fascinating!!! I would love to hear more about perfume and incense in ancient Egypt!!! I’ve read that Cleopatra traveled with perfumed sails, is that true? If so, do we know what she perfumed them with? And what all kinds of things did Egyptians perfume themselves with?
Hello, amazinggg video!!! Could you please recommend to me books I can read about the Ancient Egyptian INCENSE in particular as this is the topic of my university work. Thank you so much!
You look great in orange.
I AM A HUGE FAN OF EGYPT, CAN YOU PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON THE THEBAN THEOLOGY BECAUSE I CANT FIND ANY INFORMATION ON IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE !!!!!!!!
Can you make a video on the type of laws they had in Ancient Egypt?
Makes scents to me!
Amazing video, as always!
And btw I would like to ask or more likely confirm, if it is true that the first vending machines were invented in Ancient Egypt (around 215BCE) to sell holy water?
Can you make videos where you review your favorite books on Egypt (ancient and modern) be it fiction or nonfiction?
I saw you on a documentary I was watching on Disney Plus! Only for just a minute and you weren't giving any sort of expert info but I was like, 'Oh! I watch her on UA-cam!' xD
I too should commission beautiful portraits of myself. Screw it, it's 2021!
Thank you for your video. I was wondering when you talk about incense used in ancient Egypt, do you refer to frankincence, oud, galbanum, or myrrh? Is there a specific incense they used or was it a mixture?
You are the epitome of a queen!!! Your wisdom, style & clear passion for history is serious so beautiful! I am so excited to learn more about the alchemy portion of this! Currently in a year long study of spiritual alchemy so I would love the historical juice to go along with that. Thank you so much!!💚🙏🏾
Scent!!🦚💛
It is really interesting.. but is it just me having a problem with remembering all the names?
I must have those shoes!
What about the second part of the language of ancient Egypt
You look like the villain from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I love it.
Awesome channel ! your audio is a little messed up though.
Keep exciting us
Very informative. Was Hatshepsut the last Queen of the 18th dynasty with the title "God's Wife of Amun"? I thought Nefertari, consort of Rameses II of the 19th dynasty, also held this title, but not sure this is accurate.
Please try reacting to Ancient Egyptian city building games.
Can you make a video on Akhenaten and The Aten?
Can you react to OSP's video on The History of Egypt?
Hi, I hope you see this. I'm trying to write a book set in ancient Egypt and I have a question.
I know pharaohs had Great Royal Wives or chief wives. I'm wondering if it was a thing to change who the great wife was. Like a pharaoh has only one wife, who is (automatically, I'm assuming) his great royal wife. But then he marries another wife. Could Wife #2 be named his Great Royal Wife or would Wife #1 always be the Great Royal Wife until her death?
Also, love your channel :)
Do you guys have a patreon? I would pay any amount to learn more about egypt.
How did the Egyptians make the perfumes?
What kind of trees were brought back from Punt? Ontue? Antue? Antew?
Hello make a video where you discuss this topic "surah taha". Its about the faraons and egypt. Look at it please!! :]
