    Thanks for a great review, I have had my ender 5 Plus since it was released, took my time, and now finished a 55 hour print last night. Your comment about the loudness is true, I placed an anti-fatigue mat upside down under the printer, now all you hear is the main board fan and sometimes the stepper motor moving.

    Great review! It was clear concise, and hit all the things I wanted to know. I wanted to add a large format printer, and this was on top of my list. I like the fact that you commented on the rigidity of the frame. That was my concern with a large pint volume, compared to a standard printer with only two z supports. Thanks again!

    Thanks for a great review. I watched the unbox, build and test vid before adding the 5+ to my short list of printers. On the strength of your positive comments I have taken delivery of my 5+ and rewatched original vid and this one too. One problem solved already, the economy switch. First Benchy got to about 55% and came off bed! I washed the plate and started new print with eco turned off, success an acceptable benchy. I will go as far to say the printer was easy to assemble, moderately easy to level, but the included Creality slicer software does not include a MAC version. I have D/L'd Cura which works well. This is my first extrusion printer so have to modify thinking a little as have used resin printer previously. Main reason for the 5+ was the build volume. Kris I really appreciate your attention to detail and clear explanation of step by step instruction. Looking forward to undertaking the 5 most important mods as parts become available. Thanks again. Bill

    Thanks, Kris. Great review. I've been using a Tronxy X5SA for about a year. Yesterday the controller board fried. On the Tronxy controller board, the (incoming) leads to the main power supply are directly next to the (outgoing) leads to the bed heater. The current needed to heat a large bed is quite large, and I think the power supply / controller board just couldn't handle it. I could replace the controller board, but I just don't trust the design, so I've decide to move on to a new system, and I think the Ender 5 Plus would be a good system for me. Thanks for your review. It answered many of my questions about the system -- especially as related to safety. Thanks.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review, I watched it right before I clicked buy now on the website. I intend to print almost always the full build volume with ABS/ASA and will mod it to my liking for best performance for that. I haven't found any other entry/mediocre-level 3d printer for that price range and such a straightforward upgrade path. I only had experience with a very entry-level printer from flashforge and I only had troubles with proper ABS prints and a good process for model-to-print besides a tiny print bed of 150x150. Thanks for the comprehensive review, I am waiting with great anticipation for my delivery.

    Kris, a great review. I can tell you spent a lot of time and thought in putting this together and it is really accurate. I have been using mine for a couple of months now and have some suggestions for users. This is a great second printer. I have two Ender 5s and found that this was a bit of a challenge to get set up, but my experience with them really helped. I am a big fan of TH3D and want to change out the BL Touch with an EZABL and swap out the mainboard with their EZBoard, since I have done this with both of my Ender 5s. I have changed the hot end and extruder with a MicroSwiss and SeeMeCNC which have worked well, but just installed my first Hemera on a Ender 5, and it is a game changer. As you pointed out this is a great platform for making mods to. It also is a great value for the size, construction and low cost. I look forward to your future videos on upgrades.

    So far, the very best information on the Ender 5 Plus. I have some problems with many of the reviews that talk about problems on an earlier version that might not apply to my machine. While you often make the disclaimer: "at the time of this video", it is still hard to know what issues might still apply to me. As a new user of 3D printers, I also find it tough to understand every aspect of the printer. I am still working on understanding the screen that appears after doing a measurement step. Obviously I am presented with Z measurements, but what is an acceptable difference in the measurements of the 16 points is a mystery to me. Also the Z-Unit compensation remains a bit of an enigma. That said, your comment about turning off the econo mode might have saved what little hair I have left as I was nearly to the point of pulling it out when parts popped off the bed after a few minutes. Thanks!

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  4 роки тому +1

      The grid of measurements you're presented with aren't really meant for you to evaluate unless you really know what you're doing. By looking at the grid, you can find out if there's a particular low or high point in your bed or if the bed is particularly crooked. Then you have to know what to do with that info. Unfortunately, it's a bit much for me to cover in a comment. The Z adjustment is to be used to get the print head a little closer or a little further away either during leveling or during printing. It's fine calibration to make sure your filament is going down as nice as possible. I'm happy to help where I can.

      Thanks! I'd recommend against 100% infill personally. It's difficult to get extrusion just right to not under over over extrude. On top of that, something like the cubic infill pattern pattern can be stronger than doing 100% infill. Happy New Year!

    This is my second printer, the first being CR-10 . My biggest gripes after first 2 weeks are, 1 the firmware is very FINICKY with the way you name you gcode files. It seems that you cannot have any spaces in the filenames, otherwise they are not visible to the system. Excellent readability off switching out sd cards instantly reads and allows you to print . 2 no way to add steps/mm to set the feed rate on your extruder. 3 cable management obviously.

    I have this printer at home, and it works perfectly. I changed to a metal extruder, and better tube as first mod. Then just after changed to a full metal hotend with a ruby nozzle. Prints veryvery well for the price and setup time, maybe not even an hour. Have Promega M3D at work that i manage, and it is a huuuuge pain in the ass. Nothing is working with it. And that is a 3500dollar printer, like jeezus. 11/10 would exchange the promega with an ender 5 plus for work too, would almost call it an upgrade :)

    A comment about cleaning the glass print bed - I use a spray cleaner called "Invisible Glass", since it leaves no residue. Also, paper towels can be trouble since they contain some kind of binders that help them stay in a roll. I use news print instead. You can get a big stack for small cost from U-Haul packaging material. It's the stack of paper you can get for packing boxes. Don't use newspaper, since the ink can come off of it, but use clean "newsprint" paper.

    another trick for cleaning the print bed is a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol and lint free wipes between prints (cleans any fingerprints off from removing the prints as well as any residue from the plastic) as I let my printer cool between prints allowing the prints to detach easily... I had went through a full kg of filament trying to fix random print non-stick issues until I found the rubbing alcohol solution at just a buck a bottle from the local dollar store (a block from my house)... I now never have a non-stick issue.

    Apart from the anti-backlash nut, these printers can really really gain from just making the bed heavier. It is not like the gantry, in this style of printer you want your bed heavy, maybe the frame also... try it!

    I've come back to 3D printing and have been looking over all the video tutorials I had used before. Have you updated your custom firmware at all in the last year or so? I really loved that it adjusted the auto leveler to actually take points where the nozzle would be. I'm having some other leveling issues and am trying to eliminate the possible problem. It could be anything from my plate being bowed up in the middle, to having z-steps in the printer and in my Octoprint (it would be amazing if the 5+ realized it was printing when Octoprint told it to print, as I can't adjust my z-offset during a print if I send it from Octoprint).

    I purchased one after watching your first video, I have no experience with 3D printers and mine printed straight out of the box. The only problem I had was a loose wire in the power supply ( would not heat up.) tightened the wire connection and no problem since. I have used default settings and the Creality slicer
    for my prints and I consider them to be of good quality. so I am quite happy with this printer.

    Thanks for the review! So far, we're super happy with our two units. Need a third one. Other than being noisy, we have had no problems printing molds for carbon composites the full extents of the size envelope.
    We did buy an aftermarket direct drive extruder kit , but it did not accommodate the BL Touch properly so we returned it. It works with the Ender 5, not the Plus I have since modeled and CNC'd our own kit (interested in trying one out?)
    As far as leveling, we mounted a dial indicator in the middle of a 36" long 1" square tube. It is very easy to level the bed within .001" in less than a minute.
    °Would like to see quieter drivers.
    °It did take us a while to realize the issue with long file names...
    °Our beds are different- they now have a white Creality logo on a surface with a carbon grid. Works well as long as you keep it clean.
    °ordered ours with Capricorn tube.
    °Keep the belts tight.
    Really looking forward to your future mods vids covering the noisy drivers, Z axis backlash, tuning, etc.

    Hi there, thanks so much for this great video, as a true newbie I agree that it is completely overwhelming. I thought I was set on getting an Ender 5 +, but now I've also been thinking of the FLsun 400 as an option. I know this is an old video, but I'm hoping you might enlighten me further with a response. This is going to be my first ever 3D printer, that said, I'm not intimidated by swapping out mainboards or tinkering with firmware (I'm a quick study). That said, I'm using this to build prototype products from 3D models I build in Shapr3D, so I kind of need something reliable with high-quality prints (especially for printing gear assemblies). I can easily skimp on detail if I get quality in return, and though speed would be wonderful, it's not a deal breaker either. Print area however is more important. The product design I'm working on now needs at least 320 mm diameter build volume (z axis shouldn't be a problem), but if the FLsun 400 is THAT much better in all other respects, I could compromise that to design it to 300 mm, but it wouldn't be ideal. Since this is my first printer, and it's for prototyping, I'm trying to keep costs down but I'm willing to pay for quality and reliability. At the moment I've been oscillating between the CR-10 Max and the Ender 5 +, but the FLsun 400 has piqued my interest. Yeah, I'm just a jumble of confusion and need someone with more experience to advise me on what would be best for my needs. Hoping you can help???

    ABL on - actually enables the use of the mesh stored in the firmware - the G29 command is what makes it run the ABL in front of each print. So M420 S1 - M420 Z10 (for 10mm fade hight) - should be used in start script in the slicer to get proper results from ABL usage. To many people ignore this important information when talking about ABL

    You mention that Creality has address any issues that you have had. I have not shared that experience. I got a E5+ as a Christmas gift and have been trying to get an issue with the SD card slot resolved for last five days. For the first two days of ultra slow chat response I was told at least two times to try another SD card in the slot. I did that and although my computer could read both cards the E5+ could not. They then told me to work with the seller so I went to Amazon (twice) where they told me to make sure it was plugged in and turn it off and back on. After five days I still have a bad SD slot but now I have a E5+ back in its box ready go back to Amazon. The down side is that they are not giving a full return. All this to point out that Creality has yet to honor their warranty and from a online search this behavior is the main complaint with them.

Contact Amazon's customer support and explain your situation and they may be able to give you the rest of that refund. All the best with your future printers!

    I wanted to ask you one thing: what do you think are the best acceleration and jerk setting for this type of printer? I mean, looks really sturdy, but I've read online about values like 500 for acceleration an 8 for jerk and in my opinion they're too much conservative.

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  4 роки тому

      I think this is an excellent question but, to be honest, I'm still using the conservative defaults of 500 acceleration and 8 jerk, as you mentioned. Why? Well, in the beginning of my 3D printing days, playing with these values to get the maximum quality and speed combination was fun for me. These days, just having great quality is more important, so I generally leave them alone. Having a print with ringing is just the worst and it's not worth modest speed gains to me. Not only that but with all the mods I do, this could be a moving target that would take constant re-dialing in.

    Choosing a first 3Dprinter is hard! Especially when you are like me and take way too long to research and stumble upon more and more options 😧
    But this was a great review! Thank you 😊I liked that you mentioned the CR-10s since I still haven't found a video that compare a few of the budget friendly larger format printers. That would be so helpful. I've narrowed my search down to 3-4 printers, but making that final decision is nearly impossible. I'm torned between ender 3max which leaves me more room for initial upgrades or ender 5 plus/CR-10s pro/sidewinder X2 which is priced the same here. Those will only leave me room for minor initial upgrades if needed. Even though I've tried educating myself it's really hard being a newbie and knowing what to look for.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. After the assembly and configuration of my Ender 5 Plus I noticed that the right Z Screw was significantly tighter as the bed got lower. I have made small adjustments to correct the issue however the problem persists. As far as I can see the screw and the guide rails are not bent in any way just a little..... off... thoughts? *NOTE* -- if the right Z axis screw is turned by hand you can feel the tension increase as it gets closer to the bottom. This normally starts about 3/4's of the way down.

      The first thing I would check is to be sure that the platform is level. Home the bed and make sure the left and right side are equidistant from the top rail. I demonstrated this in my original preview. Also make sure that the screw is perfectly centered between the front and back guide rods. I think those are the most likely fixes for this.

      @@kerseyfabs Thanks for the info, turns out that one of the Z guide brackets had a screw that was not centered at all. I have the screw out at the moment and it made a huge difference. Ill have to figure out a way to recenter it and possibly re-tap it. Thanks!

    hi i watched this video a few months ago and forgot most of it strong points... i have a couple of questions since i am now considering this beast.... out of box does it perform as well as ender 5? are stepper motors same size as ender 5? and does it have the improved silent board used on the new ender 5 pro? thax

    Heyy man, thanks a lot for putting pressure on Creality to release the firmware source !!!
    Also, can you share your slicer profile? I have a bunch of weird stuff hapening to my prints I can't get rid off.
    Thanks a lot!!

      You might take a look at www.thingiverse.com/thing:3126776. Braunbaer has a nice profile for the Ender 5 using PrusaSlicer, All you have to change is the print size for the 5 Plus. I also have some remixes to make it easier to download

    How many Amps does the original 24Volt hotbed take? I tried to put an external 24Volt AC power supply with a bridge rectifier rated at 50amps and 1000 volts to power the hotbed, but the bridge rectifier got fried within 1 minute giving off smoke. I escaped from seeing it explode by turning off the power as soon as I saw the smoke start. The bridge rectifier most likely isn't working as its advertised rating(I bought it on Amazon and most likely made in china), but in order to calculate, I wanted to know the Amps needed by the hotbed.

    I just dont understand what printer to get. This one seems great but then there are so many fixes needed I feel Ill never be able to manage all the troubleshooting. Im also wanting the CR10S Pro as well but that one also needs troubleshooting. Is there no printer made yet that is completely user friendly?

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  3 роки тому +1

      The honest answer is that there are few printers in the budget price range that can't use some upgrades. On top of that, all printers need routine maintenance. Keep in mind that even $500 is considered budget for these sorts of machines, particularly of large size. If you want "completely user friendly," you'd have to look at some of the more commercial models that cost $700-$1500 and have a much smaller volume.

    I have been really enjoying my Ender 5 Plus, but I'm currently struggling to resolve seam issues on thin wall prints. I've been printing less than 1mm thickness (0.3mm height and 0.5mm width on a 0.4mm nozzle). I have enabled coasting and designated a seam location. It appears to me that the over extrusion happens when moving up to the next layer. Is there any way to resolve this? Maybe reducing the prime amount for the next layer?

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  4 роки тому

      Ahh! This is a real problem and even I've faced it in the past. Thin walls are hard because it's impossible to hide your seams inside your model. The number one thing to do is go slowly! I've had to reduce my speed to 40mm/s to get good results. Also slow down your acceleration and jerk. You may also need to further tweak your retraction settings. And, as always, if you haven't calibrated your extruder, do that first.

    Awesome video. 😁👍🏼 What kind of software is used to create the objects you want to print? I’m a noob. LOL

    • @kaylor87
      @kaylor87 3 роки тому

      Hey DJ! There are two main pieces of software involved in 3D printing; a CAD modeling program, and a 3D slicing program. CAD programs could be anything from Solidworks to TinkerCAD, Google Sketchup, Blender, Fusion 360, Auto CAD, Etc.... There are many options. These are the programs people use to design custom objects (: You just need a program that can design a 3D object and export it into a usable file for 3D printing, an .STL is standard. You can also download .STL files (3d objects) that other people have created from many places on the internet like Thingiverse or MyMiniFactory.
      Once you have your .STL file, you then import that file into your second program, the Slicer. Some of the common ones are Cura, Simplify3D, Slic3r, but there are many others and most 3d printers will come with a slicing program on the SD card. The slicing program has one job - to take your digital 3D object and turn it into physical, mechanical instructions for your 3D printer. It's the slicer that you would use to set your parameters like print speeds, temperatures, layer height, fan speed, etc, etc, etc... for each of your prints. Once you have your settings how you want them, you then export the file from the slicer, which is usually a .gcode or .x3g file. This is the raw instructions that go on the SD card, which you then load into the printer, find your file, and hit "Start".
