Hi! I’m your fan since yesterday. I saw few of your videos about lightning because I’ve been a UA-camr for the last 10 years and I’ve never been able to nail the lighting set up. My room is super bright, but still I thought I needed more and more light. I was so jealous about videos that look like yours 😂. So yesterday I clicked one of your videos (by accident) and I couldn’t believe when you turned off all the lights and started adding just a little bit of light here and there for a beautiful result. Finally decided to give it a try with the light I have ( my ring light mirror for makeup😅 and a floor LED lamp) I was so scared about having the ISO of my camera so high compared to how it usually is, I set it up on auto ISO, because I have to move the camera around very often. Later I checked and WOW just WOW seriously I almost cried, not kidding😅. My son was also impressed and said it looks way more professional. I just wished I saw your video years ago. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH! ❤ I also saw your free camera settings guide Thank you for that too 😊
Thank you for taking the time to tell me this! I’m really glad my content was so helpful to you. I also have a lighting course if you’re interest: www.learnvideolighting.com (code CREATIVE20 saves$)
Super useful as always. You get such gorgeous colors and clarity on all your images, and it doesn't appear that you use filters on your lens (unless I'm wrong!)
@@benjohnsoncreative thank you Ben, very professional work. Have any suggestions regarding eye irritation? I am a teacher and I have gone through my scripts thousands of times, but lighting just gets on my nerves and lose the plot. What's your view on natural light?
This is a video of how I put it together: ua-cam.com/video/AmF5mp4SGAE/v-deo.htmlsi=UIVm3TaHk7lyDYJ4 This is the backdrop: amzn.to/47IAQx7 This is the roller: amzn.to/3OPZCm3
I’m so glad! I’ve also got a lighting course that goes even more in depth on these topics if you’re interested: www.learnvideolighting.com (code CREATIVE20 saves $$)
Do you have a recommendation for an inexpensive stand for the Godox TL30 that is black and would offer similar look and functionality to what you have in this video? Thanks.
I'm from Brazil and there's no one here who explains lighting like you. I'm watching all the videos! Around here, I can't find a lot of the equipment you recommend, or they're super expensive. I currently have a YONGNUO RGB led stick, which is very strong, and a Softbox without control. Could you tell me which other lights I should complete to better the main light, the fill light and the rim light?
Hello. Do you think 2 such softboxes would be suitable for portrait photos? Will they be able to brighten up my 20m2 room? Is it worth buying them for studio photography?
Thanks for the great tips! What do you think about the background furniture? I have 3.5m room width and behind me I have white Ikea furniture storage units and shelfs in White, also the wall is white. Do you think I can make it work with RGB light or the light will most likely get reflected out?
@@benjohnsoncreative Thanks Ben. Its just Ikea Kallax system with square white boxes .. I actually just moved it now to my studio room and I placed some items inside it. Pointed RGB blue towards it from one angle, doesn’t look that bad. Its of course brighter than a black braun or grey cabinet.. but you gotta work with what you have.. right? 😅🙈 Now its kind of partially hidden behind my vertical recording as I am planning my videos for Reels and Shorts… I have to raise it up with one more level so that audience can see something out of my backdrop. Btw, I am using sigma 16mm f1.4 and its fabulous on Zve10
Can you suggest me a camera? Basically, I want to use this camera for overhead short. Product unboxing and reviews. 1. Sony Zv E 1 2. Sony Zv e10 3. Sony Zv E1 mark ii Note it: I never used before DSLR / SLR / Mirrorless Camera.
Could you say what setting son sony zv-e10 to use for lighting like in this video? I have similar softbox but struggling with camera settings. This will be for talking head videos.
Settings will depend on a lot of different factors, but I believe I had mine set to: ISO: 200 SHUTTER: 1/50 APERTURE: 1.8 WHITE BALANCE: 5600k If you want to learn how to take full control of your settings you can grab my free course here: www.supersimplecamerasettings.com
@ Thank you. Can you make a video breaking down how to set up a boom mic and how to easily transfer the files ? I send all my videos to an editor and that would really be helpful.
The problem I am having is that I am finding the lights are too bright. Even on the lowest dim setting. I really want a light where I can dim it really low for almost a creepy effect. A lot of the lights on the market now are BRIGHT. Which I understand but it would be nice to have some options!
Yes in theory, I’d look into shining one of the ring lights through something like a diffuser or even a white bed sheet to make it a larger light source which will make the key light softer
That’s a challenge! I personally haven’t tried that before, let me experiment and I’ll try and make a post on this at some point! It will just come down to position, try to get a large light source as close as you can and because of the brim of the hat you’ll have to position the light down so that the light has a chance to hit the face
@benjohnsoncreative I have thought about trying something. If I decide to do something, and post, will let you know. Maybe something like, instead of top 45 degrees, bottom 45. And trying something like edge light for the hat and another light for halo effect. Then the challenge becomes like, one side has gone dark.
It’s most likely auto exposing if you are using the native camera app, I’d recommend downloading the free Blackmagic camera app, and manually adjusting exposure
I love how you don't use big words and jargon. Makes me feel it's so doable. And I haven't even finished watching! I'm now a sub. Thanks!
I’m glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the sub!
I think I've given up on becoming a professional UA-camr, but videos like this are still pleasing just to watch and learn from.
There is always more to learn

Hey Ben! Thanks for the video!
Is Godox TL30 still relevant in 2023, or there are some worthy competitors now?
I still use and love it! I’m sure there are others that are great but I love the quality and price of the godox

Hi, where can I find the tripod and the clip you use for the Godox Tube please?
Hello. Do you think 2 such softboxes would be suitable for portrait photos? Will they be able to brighten up my 20m2 room? Is it worth buying them for studio photography?
Lighting is all experimental - I’d say it’s worth a try!
Which would pick between the godox and the yongnuo light?
Whoa what’s that photo paper stand thing you have for the backdrop??
