This is the all-new Volkswagen Arteon R Shooting Brake! It’s the estate version of VW’s Arteon R, and Mat’s going to put it through its paces to see if it has what it takes to go toe-to-toe against competitors like the BMW M340i Touring!
Starting off with performance - the Arteon R Shooting Brake’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine which can put down 320hp and 420Nm. So it’s clearly no slouch, although the power output is down compared to the M340i Touring’s 374hp!
However, the engine isn’t the only update compared to the standard Arteon! The R edition comes equipped with an aggressive sporty front bumper and air intakes, along with a new rear bumper. And of course, as you’d expect from an R, it’s also sporting quad tailpipes!
The question is - is it really worth the £52,000 price tag?! There’s only one way to find out… Stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review!

This is in my opinion probably the most beautiful VW that has been produced. A shame that it only comes with a 2 liter and 4 cyl engine. If it would have a V6 engine as an option, it would be really interesting.

Pretty sure I can. Design wise it’s just a boring Passat with some plastic surgery and lipstick! Side profile looks like a Leon ST, especially towards the rear, and face is all droopy.

Owner of a "normal" (Diesel) R-Line Arteon SB here. This car is a perfect conversation starter. Nobody knows what it is and asks what this sexy VW is all about. I've seen only a handful on the street since I got it in late December, so I don't drown in the masses of grey Passats. I've got thumbs up from "normal" Arteon drivers, even a GTI driver smiled and nodded at me. And it is a practical family car, virtually the same as the Passat sizewise (even a bit more rear legroom than the Passat due to the longer wheelbase). The interior may be a bit dull compared to the iPads on wheels nowadays, but it is sleek, clean and quite stylish. My kids love the lit doorpanels, they look gorgeous at night :)

Love my Arteon. BiTDi 4 Motion. Huge, nice drive, decent turn of speed, doesnt have a drinking problem. The DCC is great you can change it from being a big wallowing barge to reasonably nimble and stiff

Drove one of these at a press event recently. Taken on its own merits I thought it was pretty good, even if the steering wheel touch pad controls are monumentally annoying. Taken in its wider context, though, it felt a bit thin. All it's direct rivals have a 6 cylinder engine and a four just can't match the sound and mid-range surge.
Its direct rivals have 4 cylinders.
It doesn't compete with a 3 series.
Get a Kia Stinger, it's cheaper and faster.

Arteon R costs £53,000. On price, it's rivals are the Audi S4 (£48,000), and BMW M340i Touring (£52,000). Mercedes-AMG C43 is currently not available as a new version is due soon, but the previous version was in the same ballpark. It's price rivals have all have 6 cylinder engines.

@@grahamek86 it's not about precious or not. It is already more expensive than m340i which has 6 cylinder and more hp. Also they want to protect sales of RS3. That's why inline 5 engine never made into Golf R.

Vw made the arteon with less cylinders in order to have low fuel consumption in daily use and sporty when you need it and combining that with practicality and sexy looks i think its the ultimate all arounder but it a shame a lot people dont buy it because they want a car with more "premium" badge like bmw mercedes audi etc.
Nice car. It would be good if you tested it's acceleration without launch control as well as that's a more real world test.

What u think about the interior?
@@senoow4215 Honestly I think it's super solid and well made. I'd say it's just below Audi level, minus the touch on the steering wheel which is a small minus.
Passengers have complimented the interior as well.

@@senoow4215 I can only speak for the MK7 version of the Golf R and yes it certainly feels like a much more pleasant cabin. I have yet to sit in a MK8 though I've mostly heard its actually worse then the MK7s of the same model.

I love how German car manufacturers actually do the times they promise. With American cars you can drive downhill with tailwind in best weather conditions and don't make the promised time. With a German car you go uphill during rain and still beat the manufacturers time by 1/10 of a second
VAG's ethos, or at least the one straight-up stated by Audi, is that the stated performance is the worst-case scenario.

As a BMW fanboy I'd rather have this arteon than a m340i, this thing is bloody gorgeous! And with a 600€ stage 1 tune you have a 400hp arteon. Though I think this car needs a bigger engine.

I miss the R36, when volkswagens were cool.
It had a 3.6 VR6 310bhp 4motion. Back then in 2007 I managed to convince my dad to get the step down which was the same 255bhp 3.2 from the golf R32. And he still dailies it to this day.
I still have 2012 3.6 VR6 300hp in CC (arteon predecessor) and its driving orchester.

Not sold in Romania, but Romania does get the Arteon R Fastback, and the regular Arteon Shooting Brake.
20" wheels are unnecesary when you have small brakes like that. It's just going to make the ride worst and potholes more dangerous for breaking your wheels.
