Many Americans have a % of Scottish in their genealogy. Virtually everyone whose family have lived here for several generations are “mutts” including myself; Italian, Scottish, German, Polish & French. Originating in the Notheast (NYC, PA & CT) my family have spread across most of country in the past 250-ish years. We are the “Great Melting Pot” with everyone contributing something unique to make the US a most amazing country.

@@jeffhampton2767 Yes, my ancestors in the U.S. were examples of that. And many people in America who claim to be 'Irish' are actually Scottish. The Scots-Irish came over from Northern Ireland, but they were Presbyterians of Scottish background (they or their ancestors having migrated to Ulster, Ireland from Scotland, with some from England as well).

Each time you just get the ice, add a couple of slices of fruit to them, as the ice melts, you get an additional refreshing treat.... mmmm!

I would occasionally fly from Ft Lauderdale (when my brother lived there) to stay at a buddy’s house in Key West. He had a really nice Victorian with a small guest house that was once the servant’s quarters. Iguanas are just one of the many invasive species in Florida. Also, the feral chickens in Key West have become a problem there lately. Hemingway’s house is now a museum with descendants of his polydactyl (many toed) cats still living on the premises. I love Florida & especially the keys but try not to visit during the summer months unless there’s a family function. The heat really doesn’t bother me as much as the high humidity. Glad you got to see so much of the US, come visit soon again!

When Truman was President, the house at Key West was on the grounds of a Navy Base. The building had previously been the Commandant's Home. it was already Federal Government property, so adapting it for the President's use was easy. Security and privacy were provided by the Navy in addition to the usual Secret Service details.

The last time I was in Key West was way back in the 1990's. When I visited Ernest Hemingway's house, they had a Pablo Picasso sculpture of a cat that was broken and glued back together. Apparently when the house was turned into a museum, they found the sculpture in pieces in a box and someone reassembled it. It was just sitting on a dresser in the bedroom. I thought that was interesting being able to see an original Picasso so close up.

The chickens and cats are protected in the Keys. If you mess with them the locals have a real problem with that. I lived there for a couple years and it's great to visit but difficult to live there. The tourists make it hard to run out to the grocery store or to do normal daily activities. And often people get so drunk they wander into local's homes or fall asleep on your front lawn. lol

(Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL); I-40--2559 mi./4117 km. (Barstow, CA to Wilmington, NC); I-80--2900mi./4666km. (San Francisco to Teaneck--NJ suburbs); I-90--3020mi./4859km. (Seattle--Boston).
The reason the plane there is so big: it's an international airport, which is more than a bit amazing, considering the size of Key West. It's one of 14 in FL, and 1 of 156 across the country.
The house you raved about is, as the sign said, the Truman White House. He was our President right after WW2--preceeded Eisenhower, and like many Presidents, he chose this house as his place to get away from the pressures of being President. To answer your question, Kennedy was President when the Cuban missile crisis happened. as well as when Castro turned Cuba Communist.
