    Tips for driving in the desert: make sure you have water in your car. Not just a water bottle or two, but several or just buy a gallon jug to refill your bottle. This is just in case you get stranded. Also, there will be large areas where you will not have cellular coverage, so make sure you have downloaded your route or digital map, or have a paper map, or have an updated stand-alone gps device. Have snacks and a blanket in your car….again, just in case you get stranded. Never let your gas tank get below half a tank if at all possible - you’ll never know when you’ll be able to refill next. Otherwise….enjoy your trip and have a blast!

      Amen! Paper maps are a must. The blanket may seem counterintuitive, but 30-50F temperature swings in the west aren't uncommon, especially in the fall.

    SHAUN, what you really need to do on a separate trip is to do the Mighty Five (National Parks) Tour in Southern Utah (which could include Monument Valley). The Parks are Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Bryce Canyon. And a good starting point for that trip would be Vegas. You can fly right into Vegas International Airport, rent a car (a Jeep would be good for that one) and take that Tour. It would take a good 7 to 10 days, as you'd wanna spend at least 2 days at each National Park, and then there's several smaller State Parks around the region that you can check out in just a day each. Zion is just 2 hours (~120 miles) up the road from Vegas on I-15. So that'd be your first stop. Bryce Canyon is next. Then Capitol Reef. Then up to Arches. Back down to Canyonlands. And then down thru Monument Valley. (It's a big circle thru the Southern Utah desert. But the thing is, the drive to each Park is just as interesting and beautiful as the Parks themselves. I'm surprised that whole section wasn't declared a National Park back in the day, but I guess that would have restricted any development on it. As there are a few towns throughout.

    Shaun, I'm putting my two cents in on this one: As others have mentioned, if you can, you might try to squeeze in some southern Utah national parks: Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. Also, about an hour and twenty minutes east of Sedona is Barringer Crater, AKA Meteor Crater. The crater is 170 m deep, almost 1.2 km across, and was created some 50,000 years ago.

    The autumn leaves in Boston are brilliant. You'll really like it! Boston is such a great city to tour, especially if you're into American history. Even though most of America isn't very pedestrian-friendly, Boston is one of the exceptions. The metro in Boston (better known as "the T") is great, and will take you to just about anywhere you need to go.
    You're very wise to visit the desert Southwest during the autumn instead of the summer!

    Make sure you arrange to take a guided tour at Monument Valley. You can only get off the highway and main loops if you are with a Navajo guide, because it is Tribal land. I did a photography tour and got to see sandstone arches, the interior of a hogan, talk with Navajo women about their lives living simply on the land, besides some beautiful vistas we’d never see on our own.
    When you’re on Tribal land, make sure you stop at one of the places serving Navajo food. Fry bread and mutton stew are a must. ( Yes, I know you’re probably very familiar with mutton).
    Make sure you have plenty of water, a blanket, downloaded maps,and warm clothes. The deserts get pretty cool to cold at night in November. Dressing in layers is key.

Lots of parks for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, etc. We have an active diamond mine, Crater of Diamonds State Park. You can keep your finds. There have been some VERY nice ones found too. 40.23 carats. It’s called the Uncle Sam. They have regular locals on a daily basis who can tell you some stories. Also, Lake Ouachita is amazing for kayaking. There are islands all over the river you can kayak to😢 and camp. Hot Springs has hot spring baths on Bathhouse Row located in Hot Springs Nat’l Park, along with horse racing and casino. Eureka Springs, Petit Jean Mountain….I could go on! I hope you consider checking out our state.

See if you have time to visit the Painted Desert, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, the Petrified Forest, explore the Navajo Nation, the Yavapai Apache Nation, Hopi Reservation, Montezuma Castle, Palatki and Honanki Heritage Sites, Tuzigoot, V Bar V Petroglyphs, all sorts of great places to explore.

    Shaun, Monument Valley is a very good choice--beautiful place. While on the Navajo Reservation, I'd recommend a tour of Canyon de Chelly (de SHAY), plus a drive to Rainbow Bridge. You may not know that this is the largest tribe in the USA and Canada, at around 170,000 speakers of their language, and the size of the reservation is 27,413 sq. mi./44,108 sq. km., which is a bit larger than WV. They were also the tribe with the most participants in the code talkers program during WW2. Up near Page is another beautiful place called Antelope Canyon. If it's not on the reservation, it's very close to it.

    As a Boston native:
    1) I will say that Salem is an awesome take in during Halloween, but be warned, it's always crazy busy. So get there EARLY if you want to get any kind of decent parking. Also, if you go, make sure to hit up the "Pioneer Village" which is on the outskirts of the city, and a fun little take in if you've ever seen Hocus Pocus.
    2) Some places to go in the city are the "Freedom Trail" in general, USS Constitution if its open, Castle Island in South Boston, The Boston Public Library in Copley Square (trust me it's amazing in there) Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in general which is next to the Isabella, The Bell in Hand Tavern, the Paul Revere house. Any Restaurant in the North End.
    3) if you have the time Plymouth Rock/ Plantation to the south or the Kangamangus Highway out of Lincoln New Hampshire to the North. Cape Cod is nice, but personally, I find it a little overrated.

    Utah is one of the most beautiful states in the country and has five national parks. Zion national Park is only a 2 hour drive from the Grand Canyon north rim. Bryce Canyon National Park is about 90 minutes from Zion National Park.
    I’ve been to San Diego and I’ve been to Phoenix they are both typical desert cities with all the amenities and venues that you would expect a large city to offer but Utah’s national parks are spectacular. If you’re interested in learning about that area and its magnificent natural beauty, google The Colorado Plateau. There are nine national parks and 18 national monuments on the Colorado plateau including the five national parks in Utah and of course Grand Canyon NP . The plateau covers parts of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico totaling 130,000 mi.² . The elevations on the plateau range from 2,461 feet at the bottoms of the canyons to 12,600 feet above sea level on the mountain peaks.

    Sedona, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley are all must-sees in the area!
    Another recommendation (that you may not have time for this trip) is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) a bit south of Phoenix in Tucson. It’s a museum/zoo with flora and fauna indigenous to the area, and (except for the summer) they have their Raptor Free Flight which is amazing! It's consistently one of the top zoo’s in the country (usually ranks in the top 10), and one of the best ways to learn about the desert in Southern Arizona!
    We live in Tucson, where the ASDM is located, so if you make a trip back and have time to spend in Southern AZ there are some wonderful sights down here too. Tucson arguably has the BEST Mexican food in the US, our Sonoran Dog is to die for.
    Just some of the things to see in the southern part of Arizona… Tombstone (the OK Corral), Old Tucson (movie studio where a LOT of classic westerns were filmed), Mt. Lemmon, Pima Air and Space Museum, the Boneyard (military aircraft “graveyard”), Bisbee, Saguaro National Park, etc… and I'm missing a lot. In fact there so much down here we could take a month off of work and not miss a day of things to see or do within a 2-3 hour drive. We’d love to give you the grand tour!
    Advice I give everyone from non-desert climates on visiting the desert SW - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Always have water with you, even in the winter. The dry heat tricks you into thinking your fine, then suddenly you’re feelin’ kinda woozy. It still happens to me sometimes (I’m bad at drinking water), and I’ve been here 40+ years.

    • @AC-ni4gt
      @AC-ni4gt 2 дні тому +1

      I agree. Not just because I live in a desert too. But because one too many tourists either 1) pass out from not being hydrated enough or 2) not make it home at all.

      The ASDM is fantastic. I would like to drive to it sometime when it's not pouring, lol. I'm a desert rain storm magnet. Last time I went to CA, the bridge on I-10 at Tex Wash was washed out after a freak rain storm.
      Sabino Canyon is such a contrast to the drier surroundings.
      Shaun, Sonoran cuisine is a special. It is different from what we have in Texas and New Mexico. You need to try a carne seca burro, carne deshebrada con papas and coyotas. Sonoran hot dogs are great. The best are from food trucks. Yelp can help you find the best one. Popovers (fry bread) are good too.

I would also suggest that rather taking the I-8 freeway, you drive old historic US highway 80 between San Diego and Phoenix. I've actually driven the entire highway from San Diego to Savannah. Hi Shaun, I'm so glad you're coming to the SW! I live in AZ and grew up in CA. Given your time constraints I recommend focusing on the nature spots rather than the cities bc they're too incredible to miss. Skip San Diego and go to Saguaro National Park near Tucson, AZ. Only spend a day or less in Phoenix as a pit stop. Try to squeeze in more of the national parks in Utah as others suggested. It is the most incredibly beautiful state (other than Arizona 😉), it will blow your mind. If you can't do Utah proper on this trip, please prioritize it when you come back for NM.

    • @c352dyhv
      @c352dyhv День тому

      Also, even though it's touristy, take a Pink Jeep Tour in Sedona and they can take you to nature spots more off the beaten path. The drive out from Sedona to Flagstaff is stunning. If you don't go to Flagstaff, you would just drive 15 minutes in that direction and come back bc that's the most beautiful part of the trip. Williams is a cute Route 66 town on the way to the Grand Canyon. Worth stopping for a meal. Others suggested visiting Wilson, Tombstone and Jerome, but in my opinion, your schedule is too tight and the other places in Utah are way more incredible.

    • @c352dyhv
      @c352dyhv День тому

      One more thing, lol. It might sound strange or woo woo, but I recommend taking a UFO tour in Sedona, for a very unique, mind-expanding experience. It has one of the highest sightings of UFOs in the world. The natives have known about this far before it was ever colonized. They give you military-grade goggles and you're guaranteed to see at least a dozen. The most reputable one is with the "Center for the New Age" in town. Overall, although touristy, Sedona is a highly sacred and spiritual area.

    When you go to the San Diego area, go across the bridge to Coronado. There’s a pub there called McP’s, and a few places to get great fish tacos. Also, that’s where’s the USN SEAL school is.

    Given your timeline, it would make much more sense to go LA, down the beautiful coast to San Diego, then over to Palm Springs, and on to Arizona, an easy 3.5 hour drive on Interstate 10. If you go to Joshua Tree, you should go up to Pioneer Town & eat at Pappy & Harriets. In Palm Springs you should take a tour of the mid-century modern homes - you can tour the homes and hangouts of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, etc.

    Salem at Halloween should be fun. I don't know for a fact. But I bet they do something special. My advise for your trip is not to put any money in the slots in Las Vegas for anyone. Native American & old Spanish culture in New Mexico & Oklahoma might be a good choice for the next trip. There is a lot of that in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, all over the US in fact. So you won't have any shortage of material there.

    I grew up in Nevada for the last part of my childhood and lived in Arizona, Tucson and the Phoenix area. I can't stand Vegas but that's just me. Love Tucson much more than the Phoenix area. Tucson has the Desert Museum, Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon and Mount Lemon. Maybe for one of your other trips? I was trying to find the name of a diner my daughter and I ate at in Las Vegas but can't remember. It was really good and cheap. The good thing about Nevada is that most of the casino/truck stop breakfasts are really good. While in San Deigo, take a drive to La Jolla, so nice there. San Diego also has Balboa park, really nice area. In Vegas, you should also see a show. The only reason I would ever go back there. ( :

    Shawn- I have been to San Diego at least 8 times. A very good suggestion is to start with the OLD Town Trolley Tour of San Diego. You can get it in Old town. This will take you around the city and it is hop on hop off so you can spend some time in each attraction. Then ones that you really like you can go back to on your own. And you can get lots of footage. They come every 15 minutes. And the places that don't interest you, you can skip going back. I would try to get there at 9AM and the last trolley is at 4PM. Worth every penny. Around $50 per person .
    I would highly recommend at least 5 hours at the San Diego Zoo. It is the best in the country and the landscaping is amazing. Also, San Diego Wild animal park is a once in a life time chance to see wild animals up close. The animals stay in place and a monorail or walking trails take you to them.

    After living out West for years it's the deserts that really grabbed me, more than mountains, oceans, etc... Las Vegas is cool especially seeing good shows (the Orb?) but after 2 days you've seen it all, like being in an amusement park. Limit your time there but add time for: a Navaho guided tour of their land; take a boat out on Glen Canyon Rec Area; stay in Springdale for Zion Pk; stay at Gouldings Lodge Monument Valley - you can do an entire episode just on all the movie stars that stayed there while filming classic films. Enjoy!

After Monument Valley, watch a sunrise at Zion National Park and do a little hike... then drive 1.5 hrs and watch the sunset at Bryce Canyon National Park before heading to Vegas! You'll be blown away. So excited for your trip! It'll be fabulous. Then on your next trip you can go to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. PS. Shaun: Sounds like a fun trip, but a warning: Northern Arizona is at high elevation, so it will SNOW in November! Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon can get very nasty! Pay careful attention to the weather and plan to avoid snow. Also, Monument Valley is beautiful, but it's way, way, WAY out in the middle of nowhere, and there's no services or anything there. I would not try to make that drive on this trip; I don't think it's worth it. This part of the country is truly EMPTY, meaning no towns or services on the way. See it when you visit Colorado or Utah. Enjoy the trip!

    For your next road trips, I recommend..
    One, I would say in New Mexico to Colorado. You can go to Santa Fe, Taos, Albuquerque, then through Colorado to Denver, Boulder, any of the ski towns like Aspen, etc. You can even keep going up till Wyoming, which is pretty impressive, in how empty it is.
    Two, the Smoky Mountains. Where they just had the flood unfortunately. But hopefully it will be fixed up by the time you get there. You can start off in Nashville TN. Go to the Great Smoky Mountain Park. Go to Dollyworld and Gatlinburg. Then drive over to Asheville North Carolina. Then you can keep driving to Charlotte North Carolina, and I guess leave from there.
