John Petrucci discusses and demonstrates the mics, preamps and summing mixer that made Dream Theater's new album sound huge and cover all those magical frequencies.
#Sweetwater #JohnPetrucci
A very rare type of discussion.
Sweetwater really does some cool community things... I like that.

You know lot about mic...legit!!kicking balls!!yeah
kicking balls lol
For me, Distance over Time is the best sounding DT album they've done in terms of the guitars.
Yes it is very pure sounding. Am I the only one who is finding the drums overly loud and the hihats sounding like sleigh bells? I am used to Portnoy's heavier hats. But the drums themselves sound absolutely excellent and deep.
Agreed! This album sounds fantastic!
Agreed!!! Kicking balls!!
The lead guitar tones are straight butter. It is excellent.
Meh...
You've got to appreciate the amount of work that went into the creation of this video. You also have to appreciate the detailed appreciation of sound of the artist. This was extraordinary really well thought out and informative. Thank you.
Totally agree. Every time I watch videos like this, I just think how amazing it is that this kind of this exists and how many great learning resources we've got kicking about.
I love kicking
The bears obviously mistook JP for one of them.
What a brilliant idea!! Fantastic Video guys Mitch is such a intelligent interviewer, so knowledgeable.
perfect mastering of this album, great job guys!
This is an informative video and enjoyable. Thank you!
A FANTASTIC video. Inspiration and education at peak.
Loved the show! Really instructive. You should do more videos like this with other artists. Cheers
wow incredible! Thanks for sharing this most informative and fun!
That’s it… I’m gonna order the sm7b now. Damm that sounds good.
Good job for capturing exact same tone Sweetwater!
OMG this info is like the holy grail to me, PLEASE share the whole clinic (Y)
Awesome vid guys ! Congrats ! Huge tone, ballsy as hell
Love kicking the balls!!
Wow, awesome way to do an interview.
Can you please share the whole workshop please ? I would love to see the full video..
Cool vid, even cooler guitar player. I love the choices in equipment. Would have like to have heard a small discussion about mic placement. Cheers.
Really cool and a good insight to his overall live sound!
That was great!
JP: One string to rule them all...! ☝🏻
This is dope af
oh you have to upload the whole clinic
this gear increased the US debt by 50%
0:03 "Hahahaha, that's a funny one Mitch"
Where were the mics placed on the speaker? That also says a lot about what kinds of frequencies you're capturing
Daniel Bui you can easily see the mic position on the speaker on john’s Instagram. He posted a series of photo where you can see the amp settings and the mic position for the record
@@gabrielepirovano465 Thanks for this tip btw!
Gabriele Pirovano pictures aren’t an accurate representation of mic placement
@@ghostinthesnow11 I'd say a picture is a lot more accurate then just telling you with words.
Daniel Bui pictures are how most studio recall notes are captured so I’d disagree
Excellent 👌
This. was. very. cool!
Lol I love how they just nod at each other when they start replaying the different mics
Very cool. Would’ve liked to have heard the ambient mic as well in isolation and then added to the mix.....
great interviewer!
do more videos like this please
Is it just me or did anyone else notice the can of Finger Ease JP has to the side on a table? I've been seeing this stuff everywhere and recently bought some in hopes of reducing string squeak while recording. It actually works pretty well. It's nice to know people like JP and Marco Sfogli use something so basic (and cheap) for high-quality recordings.
Wish Rupert sent me stuff to use in the studio.!!!!! MORE vids on studio techniques.!!!!!!!!!!! Hi Rupert.
I wish they would've edited the video afterwords and put the actual mic streams in, not just the room mic sound for everything
2/3 way thru very interesting video!
woow thats something
would be cool having the 3 IR separate ;)
Excuse me sir are you planning on playing that guitar you have in your hands? I could use it if you don't.
Increíble, solo el rack de los preamps neve costaría sobre los 21000 €, fuera del alcance de la gran mayoría de los mortales. De todas formas grandísimo aporte. Muchísimas gracias por compartir este conocimiento.
Muchos gracias
The Royer brings a lot of Low mids.
hope somebody make IR based on this setup
Yes Mikko from @ML Sound Lab captured a very comparable Mesa Traditional with original Spec Mesa UK speakers, where you can move the Mics in complete 3d. Its got an Sm57 a similar condenser and the Royer 121.You can recreate this tone very well on it
That riff sounds like Untethered Angel intro
Why is this guy sitting in front of the cab so nobody can see anything .... holy shit.
So question is, what cab(s) and speakers did he use?
What Majesty is that? What's the color name? That looks beautiful. And sounds amazing.
Nick K 2019 Majesty, Enchanted Forest
He is good no doubt abouth iT... 🙏✌️🇳🇱
Are u the real nuno bettencourt
melhor guitarrista do planeta John Petrucci você é o cara vem pro BRASILLLL
amp settings would be cool too ;)
speaks and looks uncannily like Andy aledort.
I hope you are smart enough to profile this setup and sell them for us kemper people 😊
OMG.. His guitar be like ukulee with his body
the interviewer does not move his head in the right timing while listening to johns playing. haha
And here I am using my DigiTech RP360 like a fool, hoping for some USB magic.
"1 string" damn...
6:50 -- FINGER EASE! WHAT? JP USES FINGER EASE? I'm dying.
What's wrong with F.E.?
That’s great stuff man!!!! It works!
He has since the first DT album. Enjoy the afterlife
I know right. I just eat some potato chips before playing. That grease really makes my fingers fly!
Petrucci's jeans can't handle his power
For a second I thought he was gonna play Marigold
Daah Bears.
so in the first 2:30 you are saying the reason modern music doesn't have any soul is... you got 15 amps and mics to mix and tweek 200 times to come up with something that sounds worse then an 8 track setup right with good mics and natural acoustics settings.
Total cost of rig is like over $15k Hahaha 😂😂😂
So... I'm all for using a couple of mics and blending to get a sound (I use an SM57 and a Royer 121 on every guitar track I record) - I used to use a third mic (MA-200), which I stopped doing because 3 mics really just created more confusion in terms of sonic pallet choices - just isn't necessary considering you can EQ a little to get where you want to be. But 6 mics on two cabs and a room mic???? Just ridiculous. That's $40k worth of gear you're listening to folks -- does it sound like it? Not to me. Sounds like a Kemper Djent sound. Pete Thorn and Tosin Abasi get WAY better sounds with way simpler rigs. Come on Mitch - I can see you thinking...yeah... this is total overkill.
It sounds like it.
This is more analogue and less plugins to temper the sound . As a studio engineer. It makes sense to me. Maybe not to you. But in recording. I wonder how many plugins you use
Overkill? Yes, but if you're Dream theater and companies are drooling to have you use their gear why not? I don't they paid 40k for it all and the tone in that album is killer. Granted I think that's more a credit to petrucci than the gear
I mean they want you to buy some gear... its sweetwater and JP
The reason for using multiple microphones is not to use them as a glorified EQ flavour. When recording guitars, what you want to do is cover as much of the frequency spectrum as you can. Guitars cover a lot of frequencies and you want as many of them as possible for your recording. Then when you're mixing, you can cut frequencies that are in the way of other instruments, while still having a full guitar sound. Cutting frequencies out of your guitarsound is almost always the best way to go, because it adds less noise than adding frequencies with an EQ and it gives you a more natural sound. Not every mic picks up every frequency, so if you have more to play with, it's almost always going to result in more ways for you to make sure the guitar still sounds good in the mix, because you have a larger amount of frequencies to work with.
Please visit RESCUE ROAD BAND
so he knows about the BEARTUCCI MEME?
I just keep thinking...is John’s shirt wet?
The shirt is sweating with the effort of holding his biceps in
It's sweating with the effort it takes to hold his biceps in
To me that sounds horrible. The distortion feels separated from the tone.
That's not supposed to be heard in solo. From the perspective of how it fits in the mix, it sounds absolutely fantastic and considering this is just the raw guitar tone just from the amp and a lot of processing had to be done as well after the recording session, you are going a bit harsh on it.
Aditya Ghosal Aa okey, thanks for the clarification. Appreciate it!
@@krillton No problem man! :)
Dead Crowd
This sucks, JP has not been very innovative in a lot of time, all this auto complacence shit is boring.
This guy is awful
