T: Mr. Petrucci, how do you want your tone
P: Many hawks are flying around you... offering words that encourages you.
T: Got it.
Bruh trying to act like he has synesthesia but he just has dork syndrome.
Every good record should come standard with a video like this
Flornmonk no. Deconstruction and breaking down of a song ruins the magical aura around the tune. A good magician doesn’t show his hand. Take a page out of David Lynch’s book and keep everything hushed.
@@tylerjacobson8012 That's actually a really good opinion
Tyler Jacobson that’s an awesome opinion. And I agree with it to a point. I do love videos like this because I’m a musician and love to see what’s going through their mind when they made it/ the process.

@@tylerjacobson8012 as a musician and fan of dream theater I honestly respectfully disagree with you completely. It brings more magic from the song to me. Learning more about what makes it tick brings more substance and authenticity and mojo if you will lol I wish they would do it more. To each his own though
Dream Theater is talented, but my god, Jimmy T is a wealth of knowledge. Having a guy like that on your team is the way to ensure success. Top notch.
This guy saw it 4 years ago. Jimmy T is a huge part of why they got he grammy.
Please do more like this, Guitar Center.
We all need D/T album version with all instrument stem.
Jakub Vaňous that’s what I’m saying I love when they give an instrumental version of the album let’s face it those guys playing is why I listen not the story or singing part
@@jeremyluke8022 Exactly.
They really should release all instrumental versions of every song
@@peaceinpresence5538 They did.
I absolutely appreciate the work that Jimmy T did here. How many albums have Mangini played with Dream Theater? This is the first album where I hear Mangini sounding like Mangini.
Yes! Finally we can hear how good a player he is.
True level of MM
Seriously, it’s the best sounding album in years
Yeah this is one of the best sounding Dream Theater albums for sure.
The surround sound part sucks, it's barely there. Why come out with a 5.1 version if you're not going to use the surrounds?
JP seems like a great guy... And he is!
This song is one of the best Dream Theater songs EVER!👍
See you in Germany, Oberhausen 15th june 2019
I could watch 372 hours of this in one sitting.
JP's use of muting is so helpful to add dimension to my playing, it's one of those little things you don't think about too often but makes all the difference.
JP's sensory imagination seems exceptional, making the band so fitting to the name Dream Theater (visual dimension added). His guitar tone invoking chocolate cake before and now his imagery of him on the mountain top with hawks flying by him is great.. the names D. Theater and Images and Words set the course for the musicians forever it seems..
Really? Dude sounded like a complete dork. He was even laughing at himself.
“Gotcha so it’s more musical basically” 😂
I'm an atheist, but this makes me want to convert to Petruccism.
recently I took over the world by storm with this religion ! (in civilization) it was quite glorious
Welcome, my brother.
He looks like jesus
I'm sorry for your choice. To each it's own
😅 maksute iku lhoo
It's really cool to get a closer look at DT production with the DAW included!
One thing everyone keeps saying is how damn good this mix was. From top to bottom. Buy that barn! Mix everything there from this point forward! Also, awesome to hear Jimmy T break it down with the man mountain himself!
Code Khalil BUY THAT BARN NOW! Omg yea best sounding ever so powerful
Jimmy T: How many tracks want to use John?
John: Yes!!
He totally couldn't keep a straight face with the "guitar god on the mountaintop, with each note being a hawk flying all around you" imagery. I totally love the Tap-like prog-god excess being invoked here. Go John!! 😎
That's because it's over-the-top corny. He wants to have synesthesia, but he only has dork syndrome.
Jimmy T is the Real MVP on this Album!
agreed, especially after the dismal sound of the last few albums
Distance Over Time has a terrific mix. I hope they continue working with Jimmy T. on subsequent efforts. Being a bass player, I particularly liked how John Myung's bass sounds throughout too.
“You got to have the visualization” ... that’s why I am such a big fan of this man.
More studio videos like this please! Awesome.
I love being in the studio and gaining new insights into recording techniques....well...I can't get enough of it. Thanks for letting us in!
Thanks for that video! One thing is to talk about gear and techniques but the other is to show it with sound examples. These isolated tracks help so much with understanding the decisions they made.
Damn, this kind of videos is what most of us really need. John and Jimmy is really a great guy, I mean.. he talked so many things and tried to explain in the way we would understand. Please do more vids like this!
Kudos to John and the engineer for sharing this with GC and us all. Love the behind the scenes and the Pro Tools inside info.
we want more of these kind of videos!!!! JP rules! such a great guy and a phenomenal musician!
The sound of Barstool Warrior's solo is so damn powerful. I played the guitar years ago and DT was my inspiration. I heard so many solos, and I can say without any doubt that this solo is an amazing evolution of what petrucci played before. Congratulations to dt and the staff that work for this amazing album, I hope to enjoy it live very soon.
Best sounding DT album so far...they should keep recording in that "barn"
This is the best video I have ever seen of this type! Thanks guys! i'll be watching even more of this in the future! So many great points and showing your skills as who you are as what ya'll do! Cheers!
I love JP's laughing
What a time to be alive to have these videos to go along new great records that come out. Thank you!
Need more videos like this breaking down the songs from a production standpoint. Great information!
I love this man, thanks Guitar Center for the video
Love this. Keep them coming 😃🎸🎶
The best song of DT, just amazing lyrics and music, Blow my mind away this song!
I can listen to the maestro talk all day long. Magnificent album, beautiful song. I just can't get enough of "Distance Over Time". It's going to go down in history as one of the most iconic Progressive Rock / Metal album. I may sound like a fan boy but I'm not being biased at all in my opinion. There IS NOT one weak song on the album. All 10 tracks have their own unique identity and doesn't sound jaded or boring for even a second. 'S2N' is my favorite song on the album. John Petrucci is GOAT \m/ \m/
Sameer Sharma I agree to a great extent but would rather say that out of reach was somewhat cliches and sounded boring... maybe it was because the other 9 songs are soooooo good
DOT was a really boring by-the-numbers prog metal album in my opinion. So stating for a fact that it's an iconic album without bad songs is biased, as well as I'm biased.
@@dinghaoluo2769: When 'Vacant' was released on "Train of Thought", many people thought the same. Folks had identical thoughts when 'Along For The Ride' was released on "Dream Theater". "Out of Reach" is a track which a listener would interpret in his or her own way. It doesn't have a definitive meaning to it in my opinion. I guess it's something which is subjective and people can draw their own conclusion upon listening to it!
@@fredrikstaffansson4473: I personally had a similar connect with this album which I had with "Awake" when I first listened to it. "Distance Over Time" has a kind of vibe which is difficult to elaborate. I may sound biased towards d/t, however to me it is one of the most iconic Progressive Rock / Metal album released in a long time by DT!
Sameer Sharma I hear ya bro I can’t stop listening I love when they do records like this pale blue dot for me
Guitar Center, love you for make it happen!
Incredible view into the world of DT music. Thanks for sharing with us mere mortals !
I totally didn't hear the e-bow guitar layers, under the solo at 14:41, as guitars. I actually thought it was a string pad, or similar from Jordan. I love finding out about stuff like this!
watching 5 years later: John especially and perhaps the rest of the band, have amazing engineering and producer knowledge. Yet, use professional sound engineers to recreate their (John's) ideas. Makes for an amazing production every time, an all time favorite guitarist, well-deserved recognition
My FAVE track on the album
Love this in depth talk!
Such a masterpiece!! Awesome!
I started play guitar at 15 years old.I almpst stoped for many years , and at my 45 started again with a new guitar.
Petrucci was one of the reason.(Although i still cant play him...)
Favorite song on the record!
More of these please!!!!!!
I was expecting something like this analysis, those videos are very instructional
This is so amazing, thank you so much!
That mix is beautiful
LOL ! Hawks flying, dream dealing, master of all ! No wonder I love this band for the last 30 years!
Love the new album, one of their best.
The best song of DT, amazing, I love it...
8:38 The Dreamcatcher IS the bridge pickup, not the rainmaker (neck)
Best solo
Best song of the album... big John!
These are so cool I had no idea that much goes in to making a song those lil things you don’t even know your hearing but it’s there cause it adds to the whole emotion the feel of the song wow great work guys Jesus
Awesome interview!
This was fun...thanks GC
"I could have WENT"? TWICE???? :)
Awesome video, once again.
I totally get the visual Petrucci is talking about =D
This is gold
Best song of the album
This was amazing. Like a Soaring Hawk. :)
Perfect video!
Man, I try to have conversations with my buddies about the intricacies; tones and time signatures; the precision and mesh of all the instruments, and how this Album is Mangini's best work (to me).... And they just look at me with that blank stare and say "what the f***k you talking about?". Depressing.
Have seen him at least 6 or 7 times. This is great!!! The insight into the recording world is awesome!! Jimmy is fantastic!! But I would love an LTE III!!!!!!!!! That was the best , for me!!!
Have you listened to the instrumental versions of DOT songs? Without the vocals, they sounds way more like LTE than I anticipated.
@@J-Allen19 Dont get me wrong, I think John Myung is great. And I love James! He is a pro's pro. It's hard to sing in that higher pitch forever.
Awesome. Thanks for doing these. I'd love to see just a little more info concerning any special mic placement, is there any DI and re-amping on any tracks, any special multiband/compression applied and where. We here in our Mississippi swamp really appreciate the talent and knowledge that goes into DT productions since the beginning.
Fucking Legendary! No one better then JP and a super cool nice guy! as goes for the rest of Dream Theater.!!!!
Best John. Best Mangini. Best DT. #BestAlbum #DistanceOverTime 👍👍
He looks like a renaissance man, like DaVinci
Harjawaldar He IS Italian. Catholic Italian.
Auto like when any thumbnail depicting His Majesty Mr.Master Jhon Petrucci
J. Petrraci guitar melodic are awesome it actually sound you're playing on top mountain n your right, the wind blowing your hair I can image it Feel it .
very good sound
Im a simple man, i see petrucci I hit like.
I totally understand all of this
i've been listening to and following dream theater along their way since about 20 years now, at 7:57 this is literally the first time ever i saw john petrucci listen to dream theater and not play it. haha what a strange situation
It's always a good thing to have hawks circling around while on the mountain, and and not buzzards or vultures. I'm with you, JP...but curious on how it would sound with buzzards.
only a matter of time + losing time = barstool warrior
VERY COOL/IMPRESSIVE AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE ALBUM....!!! WILL HOLLA ON PARALYZED VIDEO SOON/TIC TOC...LOL...HOPE YOU GET THIS AND THANKS FOR SHARING ALL FELLERS!!!!!!!
brillant!!!!
Dream theater should do their next album with the formulas and tones they used from the 90s
8:29 a cute JP
I never stopped looking at the beard for the whole video.
The best John petrucci
yes
Don't forget about the hawk chicks nesting in his beard for future solos.
Have you ever used a TC electronics Mimiq Pedal rather than double the tracks?
Years ongoing too
7:07 When you don't know how to describe your genius, so you say, "Little Guitar Technique"
I wish this video was 3 hours long
Many hawks flying.... hehe Mr JP :)
Petrucci is my guitar God
That shit about the hawks flying around the mountaintop was wild.
Put that Petrucci guy on a fucking watchlist because he's out of his fucking mind.
Please tell me they did one of these for every song on the album
I don't know much about mixing, but if you listen to their album, it's stereo with the guitars coming out of both speakers playing slightly differently. How do you get stereo guitar sound for live performance? There is only one Petrucci. I'm really curious.
Imagine you're on the top of the mountain and there are a lot of wise hawks flying around
10:51 I instanly came to think of Steve Vai´s official music video of For the Love of God. :D
27 Guitar tracks for one song.... Damn!!
Dream theater!
Train of Thought and Distance over Time were both made in less than a month, and both are the band’s heaviest (doesn’t mean best) albums IMO.
Just interesting to note that.
Systematic Chaos is heavier than DoT
