the thing that makes guthrie's playing transcendent is that he is not, "i'm going to play lots of notes" and that he is, "i happen to play lots of notes... and i'm going to make something musical, meaningful and beautiful."
JP for me is the best composer, for my taste. But Govan is the best performer and have the biggest pallette of sounds. Is immense the quantity of sounds he can produce. But in studio JP has a composer is the ultimate machine, but nowadays he is just a remixer of himselve. In the old times with Ibanez petrucci was more out of the box and more complex in the creation process. I believe that the instrument is always a limitation. That music man must be supreme but the sound is always the same, with Ibanez petrucci had more bite and with that comes other ways of producing sound that fits the personality of the instrument too. The supreme quality of petrucci sound comes to a place where it is over processed (not that is over processed, but is the type of sound that my ears recognize has processed/studio quality). Seeking perfection isn't always the place where you want to be, the limitations is what gives the guitar the sound of a guitar, if you know what i mean. Anyways, just my opinion, not the truth, there is no thing like "the truth". If you read this John, this is not a bad critic just me recognizing your process of evolution and of seeking your dream sound, that's what makes you and the epic sounds you have produced your whole live. It is what makes your constructions has an artist.
An interesting take indeed. However, when it comes to production and playing, Petrucci is much better now (seems like he polished his upward picking since the Six Dregrees days). I agree that DT sounds similar nowadays, and I wish it was more different, but that's expected considering they have +15 albums. Liquid Tension Experiment and JP's solo project, though, are completely unique and shows how versatile John truly is. Highly recommend those two last albums. Govan is an inspiration. No way to put it. Although he's not as strong as a composer/songwriter, his energy on improv is pretty cool. If he worked his structure and licks even more, he would be unstoppable!

Paul taught buckethead and if you REALLY listen, Buckethead's shreds are just a mashup of the same ole Gilbert lick moved around the fretboard. When I was a teenager and first learning guitar, I was a Buckethead superfan as well. That was up until I had my horizons expanded.

But for my personal taste, no other guitarist has played the perfect melodies to my ears quite like JP. From Images and Words all the way to Distance Over Time, his note choice is just perfect. At a live improv setting though, yeah nobody is touching GG

Like JP, Guthrie has top tier alternate picking, tapping, and sweeping (though he doesn’t prefer using it much), but he also has things JP doesn’t use like hybrid picking, insane funk rhythm, straight up country finger picking, jazz fusion playing, etc. Add to that the skill of absolutely mind blowing improv, and I think he just has more in the toolbox

Guthrie is from a different planet. His brain is wired to his strings the way normal people’s brain is connected to their 5 senses. Then his brain flows from one wonderful idea to the next and can hear it.

I love all these players, but in an improvisational "head-cutting" scenario like this, there are only a handful of players who have ever lived who could match up with Guthrie.
Petrucci is an extremely humble dude. We met eye contact during the 20th anniversary tour of metropolis pt2 and he was totally into it, and so was I. Magical moment. Head bangs together. I love this man no homo.

Many of my favorite guitarists. Dave Larue, amazing bass player, I played with him live many years ago. John, Guthrie, and Tosin, whom I've never met, but would be honored to perform with. And Jon Finn, who many of my Berklee Students have studied with, I have corresponded with. I feel some sort of relation with all of these great guitar players. Not just personal hero's, but as "Guitar Bro's. We guitarists should consider all other striving, and performing guitarists, as bothers of the same crazy cult. We all share the same sickness, and we all aim to please. You all go, bro's! You all go!!!!
I enjoy all musicians and guitarists because they all have something unique to share. But in my opinion, Guthrie is at another level because of his versatility and command of the fretboard.
You can really hear which of the musicians practise scales and which are playing the chords, or rather have the chords in their ear. I mean, I know a good shred now and then can be impressive, it show that you handle technique well, but I would trade technique in for melody and harmony any day of the week too be honest. This what you see here is the result of too much progressive rock versus musician that do not practise chords like you hear in good jazz songs etc...

Petrucci en cambio estaba en su zona de confort, en el suyo, en su estanque. Guthrie alcanzó un nivel teórico y práctico con la guitarra tan alto que le permite superar cualquier limitante en cuanto a expresión, puede explayar cualquier melodía o sentimiento que se le venga a la mente, todo lo teórico y práctico, como escalas, formas de tocar y demás, pasó a segundo plano, debe ser algo inconsciente para el, a si como un escritor profesional ni piensa en los tiempos verbales o reglas sintácticas de manera "consciente" a la hora de expresarse, sino como algo ya incorporado, automático, sólo se centra en la idea que viene a la mente, directo de su imaginación y eso mismo le da la libertad de entrar y salir de cualquier género. Lo único, es que creo que a veces peca con un exceso de velocidad, cuando su máximo potencial esta en su feeling épico.

¿Notaron el sudor frío en sus frentes? 🤣🤣 Para mi gana Govan, la hizo muy bien, se acopló a la armonía de forma magistral en un género que no es su fuerte. Petrucci en cambio estaba en su zona de confort, en el suyo, en su estanque. Eso y que llevó la mini nevera (ese Rack multi efectos de la NASA) mientras que los demás suponga que tenían un modesto pedal y el amplificador. Quiero ver a Petrucci improvisando un solo de jazz progresivo
Seguramente Govan estaba más cómodo.
Guthrie alcanzó un nivel teórico y práctico con la guitarra tan alto que le permite superar cualquier limitante en cuanto a expresión, puede explayar cualquier melodía o sentimiento que se le venga a la mente, todo lo teórico y práctico, como escalas, formas de tocar y demás, pasó a segundo plano, debe ser algo inconsciente para el, a si como un escritor profesional ni piensa en los tiempos verbales o reglas sintácticas de manera "consciente" a la hora de expresarse, sino como algo ya incorporado, automático, sólo se centra en la idea que viene a la mente, directo de su imaginación y eso mismo le da la libertad de entrar y salir de cualquier género. Lo único, es que creo que a veces peca con un exceso de velocidad, cuando su máximo potencial esta en su feeling épico.
