I had a catalytic convertor on a v6 mondeo collapse that rattled like yours did. It didn't affect the running of the engine and I remember driving round for ages with it like it. One day it was louder than usual so I ordered an aftermarket cat as ford wanted at the time £500👀 i bought one for £300. On inspecting the old one it had disintegrated quite badly. A friend of mine had a mk5 escort 1.8 130bhp on a j plate that had a cat which collapsed. I remember watching him on his drive way smashing the innards with a piece of angle iron and then putting it back on the car afterwards 😆 it actually drove brilliant after that!
@@alan4x I see plenty of fast ford's driving about with no cat! you can tell by the smell of the exhaust fumes as it enters your cabin. when it's m.o.t time they put them back on and then take them off again afterwards 😆 usually focus st's and other Marques too.
If I pressed my 2L Duratec pedal to the floor it would read 6000 revs, I have never done that . Anyway, verty interesting and as I have 79,000 miles on the clock I have a long time to go. Thanks Alan
Hi Alan years ago I had an Astra and it would not go over 60 and what had happened is the all the stuff in exhaust back box had started to bloke it and it was a night mare to sort out it wasn't till a mechanic tried to use an air line and blow through it be found out and the exhaust was only 12 months old 🤔👍
Really like my mk3 1.8 Mondeo I’ve had since new, only 104K, but after changing the PCV and soaking the bores with various snake oil, it runs and sounds great compression is fine but smokes like crazy, jus trying to decide if I have the time and patience to attempt changing the rings.
I bellied my Mondeo once & in the process the exhaust rattled under load but my muffler chap knocked it all out & put the exhaust back on the car & it goes just as good as before, so I’m not bothered about replacing the catalyst converter as I will run the car until it reaches the end of its life!
Hi Allen Love the videos could you tell me I’ve just brought a Ford Kuga 2l tdci on a 17 plate could you tell me what to look out for on the engine and what are these engines like. Are these prone for oil leaks if so where should I keep a eye on. All best Stewart
pretty good engines, best i can say is keep it serviced regularly ..the kuga is pretty nice vehicle, one day if i get one on the ramp i will go around it and list what is good and bad
How much does a collapse cat change the sound of the car? I have a MK4 2.0L 145hp mondeo that has the note of a old fiat 500, but no leaks in the exhaust. Could that be the catalytic converter collapsed or stripped by a previus owner?
had a partial collapse on the right bank on a 350z, multiple misfire was the code [as always], took a bit of working out that bugger, only misfired over 80mph. £3k for standard cats, £1k for sports stainless, goes/sounds nice now
For months I searched youtube to diagnose my zafira with this exact problem, I couldn’t find anything, I got my car diagnosed a few weeks back and he said blocked cat, mine had screeching aswell because the pressure built up and cracked the manifold as the cat is built onto it, man I wish I seen this video sooner 😂. Do you know what causes them to block? A lot of stop starting or car running too rich?
NO, the ecu only logs a fault if the post lambda sensor starts following the the pre cat lambda, in other words if you look at the readings on a diagnostic tool and they both (pre and post lambda) change from rich to lean at the same time it mean the cat is knackered and not converting the poison gases into harmless gases, a blockage just means the post lambda sensor never gets to sample the gases properly due to the blockage and doesn't see an issue.
@@stiggyness1976 exactly! Sometimes a cat efficiency code but looking at that, there probably wasn’t time 😝. There may have been a code in the past, but it may have been cleared.

well yeah, cats only strangle the engine

The boy racers in Essex would approve of that exhaust note
lol🤣
Hi alan another one bites the dust!!.That cat was certainly shattered inside
😊
Hi Alan how much is a new catylitic converter for this Mondeo, as I have heard their expensive, good videos,
aftermarket cat i fitted was £155

could be, it would be noisier with a stripped out cat

they have all been used already but if something cones up i will let you know
Around here we woulda finished knocking the honeycomb out, bolted it back together and sent it!

Had similar on a 1.6d fiesta.
Noticed exhaust wasn't breathing very good at all and engine had no power, the cat was completely blocked.

they can block for various reasons but this one was shocked which i believe broke the internals of the cat
Some fitting places can commit sabotage like pulling one of the rear exhaust suspension rubbers off when fixing a puncture.
I guess the the disturbance of the flexi pipe helped cause the breakage .
yes i think the cat was shocked which broke it
@@alan4x lol they’d done it good and proper!
shouldn't a EML of come on for Post Cat reading nothing due to blockage?

I removed all the catalyst out of my exhaust and the engine runs so much better without it!
cats strangle engines, now no restrictions in the exhaust yes much quicker
I have exactly this problem on my mondeo. Did you just clear the particles or replaced the whole catalytic converter?
sounded like it had a blow some where as well
I had A blow last week

yes those genuine cats are worth good money

Angle grinder on top of cat, remove contents, weld back, send CV to Thickfit for new job, sorted!
