Nice to see that they were doing cutaways from the actual racing to focus on the wife and not the pass for the win, even back in the 80's. A proud and time-honored tradition.

They never do that anymore in Nascar I miss when they used to show Kim burton whenever Jeff was leading or Buffy when Michael finally won the 500
NBC has the coverage now. Lets hope they skip this time wasting tradition of showing the wife and focus on the team not the spouse. The driver and the crew chief are the guys they should be focusing on or the heartbreak of the team in 2nd not the trophy wife.

Yeah it was crazy. And I always found it strange the national guard car crashed in turn four from the lead at Indy and at the coke 600 the national guard car ran out of fuel in turn four from the lead. And mike joy commentated it with perfection on the fly

Just classic, dumb ABC production on the Mears Johncock race giving the wife more air time than the actual race. Totally missed Johncock holding him off in Turn One.
I hate that. Glad NBC does it now, they don't focus on trophy wife's.
Back then the race was broadcast on a tape delay and the commentary added after the fact.

@@701CPD Sorry 701CPD, but you are totally wrong. Those races were called live to tape as they happened. There were no later "voice-overs". I know because I was there working for ABC.
Yep, that was dumb. Showing the WAG on a split screen was stupid also! You can always show a replay of the WAG after the race is over.
Al Unser JR was my childhood hero and that 1992 race was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I was 15 years old.

You have to applaud Sato for making that move under Franchitti. In hindsight, he should have waited til off of 2 or off of 4 coming to the line, but you can't fault him for going for it. He did what any real racer would have/should have done in that situation.

2:06 fun fact: Bobby Rahal won that Indy 500 for Truesports, a team owned by Jim Trueman, who is current NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Austin Cindric’s grandfather.
The shot that begins right after 20:21 is an incredible camera shot. It looks like it’s straight out of a movie.
That shot was from a cable cam camera with the cable anchored in turn one, angleing diagonally across the track and anchored just past the Pagoda on top of the media center. If I can remember correctly, it could travel close to 70 mph. They also were not susposed to actually run it literally out over the track during green flags. If you notice, it was mostly used on restarts and was always over the pits. Kind of fell out of favor after the mishap at Daytona a few years ago.

The move Sato made to get in the lead was as gusty a move that I had seen. It too bad the video didn't show that.

The 2011 finish was heartbreaking for JR. I was and always will be a Wheldon fan so I was very happy Dan won but I felt for JR for sure.
I hated when Hildebrand lost on the last turn on the last lap. He was my guy, he must feel terrible
Feel your pain my good friend called him to win that race needless to say he was very pissed.
My family does a raffle every year and winner has a big prize. I got hildebrand in my first ever race when I was 9 and it was the worst feeling ever when he hit the wall. But at least Dan wheldon could win it RIP.
He was too high going into turn 3 to try to pass whoever was in front of him. And he didn't even need o pass that guy to win. He should have taken it easy in the last two turns. Weldon would never have caught him. Youth & inexperience!!
@@johnconway3834 Lmao he was trying to avoid slowing down for Kimball so Wheldon would not catch up like Hornish did to Andretti in 2006.
Hornish managed to catch up at the very end without a lapped car interfering Andretti so imagine how much ground Wheldon would’ve gained with one. That was Kimball’s team’s fault, not JR’s
Hildebrand could've completely let off of the throttle, and Wheldon wouldn't have caught him.....Look how close the finish was, even after Hildebrand hit the wall.....Wheldon was 3 seconds behind when he hit the wall, that's approx. 300 yards
82 Johncock and Mears was the best finish ever. Never, ever saw a more excited crowd. I was in the Tower Terrace and some woman in front of me was standing on her seat cheering for Mears and passed out cold from the excitement of it all.
I beg to differ. Al Unser Jr. vs Scott Goodyear in the 1992 race was better as it endured over 15 laps, not just the last 2. Plus, it was the closest finish in Indy history.

Its amazing how beautiful the Speedway looked even as far as back the early 80s vs. Daytona which looked like a dump until the late 90s renos.
Feel so bad for Marco. Who knows what his career would have been like with that win. I also remember when Mario had almost two laps on the field the year Sullivan won when his Newman-Haas car died
JR Hildebrand is pretty much the Titans. That one mistake has haunted him, much like that one play has to the Titans, for years.

There are some versions of the 2017 broadcast that cut to the team as Sato crosses the line. I am glad you didn’t choose one of them.

vikeirishman Made the 10 hour drive out to Indy this year for the first time. Completely worth it. Sat in turn 3 and had one of the best times of my life.
I believe that if you make the trip to Indy you will never look at the Race the same way again. I have been to the Qualifications, Race, 500 Museum, Rode the bus around the track and ran around the track. It's a amazing place! My Father even worked there during May. It means alot to me. But now Penske bought the Whole track! I will never go back again. Money always ruins the best of things. But if you want to experience the 500. Be my guest. Shawn
You can't call this the greatest race in the world. There are much better races out there, more challenging for the drivers and more entertaining for the viewers

@@mabra33 Spoken like a true Formula one fan. Mario Andretti came to Formula 1 from Indy car racing and kicked everyone Ass over there. He has won Indy, Daytona 500 and sprint car Championships. He could be the greatest driver of all time. Formula 1 came to Indy and shit all over us. So either way! I don't give a damn about Formula one. If it wasn't for Indy! You wouldn't have Formula one anyway! Yes, There were great drivers in Formula one. FANGIO, SENNA, STEWARD and many more. Jackie Stewart said Indy is a Magical race track and a Haunting place to race. It has a racing history bar none. So tell me about Formula one again! Shawn

2003 race was special. Brazil celebrated three wins in a row (2001/2002/2003) with an 1-2-3 finish (Gil, Helio and Tony). Go, go, Helio! Go for the 4th win!
Great video! Johncock and Mears still gives me goosebumps and Emmo as one of my all time drivers winning in 1989 is also memorable. And how about redemption for Takuma Sato. One that I thought should have been in was Big Al's 4th win in 1987. It was not nose to tail but his win after being drafted into Penske's 3rd after Danny Ongais was injured and going from 20th starting spot to edge Roberto Guerrero was an all time underdog story.
Edit: This was made before the 2019 Indy 500. Don’t ask me why that finish is not in here. If you do, please use context clues and go back to the 5th grade or whenever you learned how to gain understanding of a book.

@Robert Mclachlan I think he lost it the following year when he went upside down in the last crash of the race. He still won Sonoma in '06, and generally did decent. How he got his other win is beyond me.

I remember watching the ending in 2011 and was cheering for Hildebrand to win it because how many people can say they won the Indy 500 as a rookie and then my heart sank when he hit the wall on the final turn

Yes, but you still had few seconds of hope that he will slide over the finish line first. That was the most heartbraking finish ever ahead of 1995, 2002 and 2006.
1982 was the first 500 I attended. Was pulling for Mears but it was a great race!
That 1995 race was amazing! Too bad Goodyear lost it for jumping the pace car but Villeneuve coming back from his earlier penalty to win it was incredible!

Jake Baskinger, thank you for putting this together. I'm involved with these races as I was the turn 3 cameraman for ABC from 1993 til 2018, and came back for 1 more year with NBC for the 2019 race when I decided to totally retire. Actually started in turn 3 in 1989 working then for IMS' TelX Productions when we covered all the practices, qualifying, Carb Day, and of course the races. IMS actually took over production of the race in 1993 after ABC blew the finish of the '92 race when Don Ohlmeyer cut to the flagstand camera showing the flagman waving the checkered-flag instead of staying with the cars when Little Al beating Scott Goodyear across the finish line.

I bet you have great inside stories to tell, can you share? I would love to hear anything. And film clips. Were you allowed to take any film with you when you left. The stories of these guys is way bigger than what you see when they're totally focused on driving that race day. Youre the kind of person who would be an amazing dinner party guest or 1st,2nd,3rd date.

Also, Paul Page, Bob Jenkins, Jim McKay, and Allen Bestwick are the holy quartet of Indy 500 announcers. Putting Todd Harris in the booth for 2005 to replace Page was an absolute joke. It's too bad that they didn't put Page back in the booth for 2006 onward but at least Marty Reid did a decent job and was able to carry the excitement of the race in his tenure. However, getting Bestwick was a great move by ESPN. I'll miss him this year but Leigh Diffey is going to carry on what those first four have done.

Those were late '90s IRL cars instead of the CART machines that were raced there before 1996. The IRL cars were referred to as "crapwagons" because not only did they sound like garbage for an open wheel car, but they had like 200 less horsepower than the CART cars.

2016 I was there for that one standing on the steps in the giant gap near the finish. Just glad my grandpa got to see the 100th running before he passes away in late 2020.
You know, there’s always something special when an AJ Foyt car wins the 500, it hasn’t happened in 20 years but I hope it happens one more time before AJ Passes

For 3 years in a row, former F1 drivers won the race.
One of the best drivers to never win a championship at F1, an american rookie that was screwed by marussia and a japanese underdog, who back then was pretty fast yet inconsistent then managed to find his groove in indycar.

That was some high level blocking by Hunter-Reay! So many times we have seen that trailing car get a run off turn four and make a pass coming down the home stretch.
My favorite indy500 win was 2011 when J R Hildebrand hit the wall in turn four and Dan Wheldon zoomed past him and won the race.

@@iuaump4 On a late restart with 7 to go in the 2018 Indy 500, 3 underdog drivers were leading but very low on fuel with no chance of making it if it stayed green the entire way. The 3 drivers were Stefan Wilson, Jack Harvey, & Oriol Servia. Any one of them winning would have been incredible & especially Stefan Wilson.
Unfortunately that miracle caution never came, all 3 had to pit under green with 5 laps remaining, & Will Power won.
Predictable ending sure, but I think everyone would have loved to have seen Stefan win it for his late brother Justin.

I remember the 2002 Indy because Hélio climbed the fence to earn the nickname Spider-Man , and no Paul did NOT win that race. The wreck definitely occurred before the pass was made. His argument is that even though the wreck occurred before the pass, the track’s yellow lights had not yet been turned on. The track’s lights, the onboard lights,and the officials waving flags are all just ways to inform the drivers of a caution, but they don’t determine when the caution was actually declared. In other words when the driver realizes there is a caution doesn’t matter, what matters is when the caution was declared. The best way to determine when a caution was declared is to simply look at when the event occurred which caused the caution, and the event that caused the caution occurred before the pass was made.
The light do in fact determine the caution which did not come out until Tracy was ahead. The lights turn on immediately when the officials determine if the yellow is needed or not. That means the point of when the lights turn on and/or the the yellow flag is waving, that’s the exact point that the caution is out. It’s how they get timing and scoring of the running order at the point of caution.
By your logic, JR hitting the wall on the last turn of the last lap would have automatically brought out the yellow flag and since he was still rolling, you can't pass the leader under yellow and since he crossed the finish line, he should have won.

I was watching it live and as the yellow came out they immediately tried to figure out wether Tracy was in the lead or Castroneves...
I remember that they eventually came up with footage where they showed, in slow-motion, that they were passing a yellow light while battling and that it flicked on when Castroneves was still in front of Tracy.
I truly felt bad for Tracy then, but the footage showed that it was a fair win for Castroneves.
Totally agree had it stayed green then ya Tracy would have won easily but Helio won I still don't think it's as controversial as 1981 or 1995
The lights aren't even the important part. Race control calls the yellow THEN turns the lights on. The timestamps from when the yellow is called are the ones they use to determine position.
