Had the privilege of being at the 100th Indy 500 that Rossi won. I've been to Daytona twice and it was awesome. 2008 and 2018. I will never forget the visual of Kurt Busch pushing Ryan Newman past Tony. However that Indy 500 blew me away. Was sitting on the front stretch just off turn 4. Every single person around me was wondering if someone would go for it. One by one they pit until Rossi was left alone. Something I'll never forget, when Rossi dramatically slowed down in front of us with 2 to go, Bob Jenkins, calling the race, like us, thought he was out of gas. I was yelling "stay on the track!". Then when Rossi missed pit road, Jenkins yelled "But he stays out!" And everyone started cheering. That last lap every person around me, myself included turned into an Alexander Rossi fan. He was going so slow it seemed. And as he came off turn four on the last lap the crowd, already cheering, completely erupted. Couldn't even hear Jenkins anymore. With respect to all the NASCAR races I have been too, and I'm sure witnessing Jimmie's 4th championship live is up there, but witnessing that dramatic fuel mileage win was Without a doubt the coolest thing I have ever experienced.

This may sound convoluted, but I suspect Hildebrand may have had some survivor's guilt after that season as he was never the same after it. His crash at Indy that allowed Wheldon to win was the only reason Wheldon was in the field at Las Vegas at the end of the season when he was killed in the early Big One.

I still have no idea how Gordon Johncock held on to the lead over Rick Mears in turn 1 of the last lap. Deciding to cut to Mears's wife's reaction mid-pass is one of the best examples of terrible race coverage I've ever seen. 0:45

So true! It's almost unwatchable. Now they have the insets they can put shots of nervous family into without interrupting the race, but back then, they just shouldn't have bothered. Even McKay (it was him announcing, right?) sounds irritated.

Al Jr and Emerson, a CLEAR reason to STRESS to lap down traffic GTFO of the WAY!!

I like letting them fight to keep their lap. Staying on the lead lap can be very important should a yellow come out. And it lets the second place car catch up to the leader and plays into the overall racing strategy

@@jaywalkallstar Emmo and Little Al were 6 LAPS ahead of 3rd place at the end of that race. They weren't fighting to stay on the lead lap. Emmo, Little Al, and Michael Andretti had everybody covered on that day as Penske had a down year where their cars were all out by just past halfway.

faithful2thecall I meant in general I’m in favor of fighting to keep your lap. Also I might have been thinking of ‘94 when Emmo was trying to lap little Al

@@jaywalkallstar I agree with you in general too. I understand why they quit doing it, but I also thought it was better when they raced back to the yellow instead of freezing the field. Back then most drivers were good about getting out of the way of the leaders if they were off the pace as a sort of courtesy that was unspokenly expected to be return when the positions were reversed. In terms of '94 in particular, if I remember the story right, Emmo was having some radio issues and wasn't sure if he was trying to lap Little Al or pass him for the lead and that was why he tried to pass him and pushed into the wall.

In the past the Indycars looked very similar to Formula 1 cars.

That makes sense since up until the mid/late 90's, Indycar/CART was hot on F1's heels in terms of technology and popularity.
