Excellent idea. I’m thinking of taking it a step further, and putting that material all the way up the incline. I have two old school steel ramps, where the paint has worn off and even a little moisture causes front wheel drive vehicle’s to slip while going up the ramp. I’ve been wanting to paint them again with some gritty paint, but your idea might work great.
Just did this. While I was at HF I picked up a half inch grommet kit for about $4. It's next to the tarps. Should help preserve the life of the rubber mat. Additionally, you can pull the paper off the sticky and then starting from a corner, roll the adhesive off with your thumbs.

Hey Dan, I just grabbed a couple of strong looking bolts, washers and nuts from my supply. The bolt measures 1 1/2" x 14"
