Harbor Freight Tools Car Ramp Review

  • Harbor Freight Tools sells several different kinds of car ramps to lift a vehicle higher to do oil changes and other maintenance tasks under a car and truck more easily.
It was always a problem for me because I liked keeping my pump jack under the car and truck as a backup for the car jacks I used to keep them elevated. It's the old adage about backup safety plans: 3 is 2, 2 is 1, and 1 is none.
But keeping the pump jack there also meant it could get in the way. So getting a set of ramps would allow me to clear out the jack from underneath the vehicle, opening up a lot of extra room to maneuver.
Harbor Freight Tools sells a metal type (SKUs 63250, 68365, 63305) and a plastic version (SKU 63956). The plastic is actually polypropylene. While they're both priced the same, about $48, the metal ramps only have a 6,500 lb total capacity and the plastic ones have a 13,000 lb total capacity. That made the choice easy for me since I own both a pickup truck and a full-size SUV.
In this video I go over all the features of the ramps and show how they hold up under various loads. Also, I have a low profile vehicle that presents a unique challenge as its air dam could scrape the ramps and push them out of the way. I show you how well even a low-profile vehicle can mount the ramp.

These ramps are good. It held a nissan sentra on the very edge for about 20 seconds and did not crack. Once we realized what was going on, we readjusted the car on the ramps. Very sturdy and strong material. Always use jackstands!!!

Very nice demonstration video. On the driver's side the ramp appeared to skid and rock slightly, so certainly the most level surface possible would be good, along with a coarse paved surface. This is just the sort of equipment I need for oil changes on my cars, an '18 Impala and an '83 Olds 98, both of which are too low to slide under for access to the filter and drain plug. Good tips on wheel chocks and jackstands!

Well that sucks. I've used these for a couple of years now, no problems at all. Nowadays our vehicles are all trucks, so they're already lifted, but as I showed in the video, even on the low-rise Infiniti there was plenty of clearance. Ok, just enough clearance to get up the ramp. Good luck.

Nice review... good ramps for a nice n' easy oil change.
Kinda wondering about the 13k lbs weight limit. I am a truck driver and just the truck (bobtail) weights around 12,500 lbs for a freightliner cascadia 2019 with sleeper. But it's never okay to push the weight limit.
For example my ram 1500 weights around 6.5k lbs not including the tools. 🤔 but for cars and SUV is perfect match.
    Just my humble opinion... 😀🙃

    • @HomesteadDIY

That sounds like an interesting idea! I wonder if it actually does anything though since I would guess the strength of the ramps comes from the torsion box design of the ribs. I just bought them today because on my 2007 lexus gs350 the only Jacl point in right in the center right next to thr oiler filter and drain, a bit annoying to have to maneuver around.
It being plastic is so scary. I drove up on it no problem, but for my car it didn't give enough clearance to my comfort. I was able to get under and work but I was not able to place any Jack's underneath, it was still too low.
