I've got to be honest I don't know much about cars but I found your channel and I'm hooked! Thanks for the videos!
I had plastic 12,000 lb ramps once, until I was under my S10 blazer and heard a cracking sound. I quickly got out from underneath and sure enough the passenger side ramp had cracked and buckled on the outside. Plastic will degrade over time, these ramps were only 2 yrs old approx. never again, so i made my own from 2x10 lumber staggered 4 sections high 40" long inclined to a 16" final step. Solid support and I don't need jack stands to get in my way.
Lumber get's old too. You should get metal ramps. As long as they don't touch water, they will be fine.
Great Video! You can never be too safe working under a Vehicle. Suggestion: Add 2 to 4 Rear Wheel Chocks at the Rear Wheels even though you're parked on a Forward Hill Grade Driveway. Wheel Chocks are inexpensive at Harbor Freight. I also have the same Harbor Freight Ramps.
I've used plastic ramps forever, my old ones finally cracked so I went back to the jack/stands. For convenience and laziness, I'm picking these up today during a 30% off the store sale. I have a Silverado, so if it holds a Tahoe, it'll hold mine. I always put jack stands under too...too easy to stay safe. One thing I do that is nice is put rubber sheeting under the ramps and they never slide like some complain about. I worked at a place where freight came in with the sheets in between these giant paper rolls to prevent shifting during transport. I took so many of them lol.
Some of the Harbor Freight ramps were recalled due to faulty welds..... twice. So check and make sure you didn't get the recalled ones. The ramps are easier to use and harder to use wrong. I have a set of metal ramps that I have had for about 30 years. My grandfather welded a brace on the bottom of it. They are still holding up fine.

I have the rhino ramps and haven't had any problems but will definitely keep an eye on them now! My turd doesn't clear and I just use a couple of 2x6's to get the clearance. Great content cant wait for more Camaro!!

Big improvement, both of those items looked pretty strong at best as I could see. I'd be sure to inspect everything every time before using it . A while back I heard of some Harbor Freight jack stands that were splitting. I believe there was a recall but the new ones look pretty hefty.
i have the rhino ramps with the diamond plate texture on them and i've supported a 9600 lb ram camper on them with no problems. But, those harbor freights are well priced.

The rust on the metal ramps is just on the surface, sand it off and it should be fine for the Tahoe. But I’m not telling you what to do :)
Shawn Stafford but my thoughts are- put something that is not low to the ground so if they do fail.. the car won’t crush him.. but hey he’s only making it safer for himself 🤷♀️

The main issue I see with plastic ramps is the inherent design flaw you kinda pointed out, too much pressure on the front bumper of the ramp can cause it to split in half. These plastic ramps complete the job by equalizing the weight across it and at certain stress points it cannot do that because it depends on weight bearing structures that are not present at certain parts of the ramps.
Good choice on jack stands use them on heavy duty equipment never had an issue. Best for the money
Good video. I almost made the same decisions setup wise and will try to work on my Jaguar. Rating 5 t each ramp and 3 ton for each jackstand. Clean Tahoe btw
I had the rhino ramps for over a year and I had no problems yet I hope they don’t snap in half but i also have some harbor freight jack stands that are over 5 years old and are there doing great
Got the rhino ramps 3 yes ago to install a hitch on a Ford edge. Worked great.
Yeah man good buy. I have a set of the 3ton jack stands and set of ramps (the steel ones) I put my 08 Honda pilot on them with no problems.

I've been using the exact set of ramps for a while now for my 2014 Chevy Equinox & they haven't cracked & don't move when I put my car on them, so I think they're great for the price. I got them for about $30 with a 25% off coupon.
I've had plastic HF ramps for years now. Recently purchased a Hummer H2 with +6,000 lbs of mass. No problems with these poly ramps!
Ive had a set of usa made plastic ones for over 15 years and they still hold fine.

nice video I have them however I use them for a much lighter vehicle but im impressed on how the perform on the vehicle in the video.
i use 2 x8 miter cut and stacked. nailed and glued together.and a 2x4 stop on the top edge.use for my sons mustang but have had my ram 2500 diesel on it just to test..didnt budge a bit.
Buy some rubber blocks to chock off the vehicle!
Got the rhino ramps on ebay for about 30 bucks. Different brand, super worth it for all the budget stuff I do.
The originaly rhino ramps with a solid top surface (the old HD ones) were great. I've had a set for 20 years and have used them for all sorts of things WAY outside what they were designed for. I decided that I needed a second set at one point and picked up some like you showed in the picture and the 2nd time I used them I had one of the end blocks (like of the 2 that broke off in the picture you showed) crush while I was changing the oil in my Taurus SHO smashing the plastic bumper/skirt on the car. Luckily I just walked away from the car to go get a wrench so I wasn't under it when it happened.
I'm curious about the HF ones but anything with any openings in the face makes me nervous after my experience with the newer Rhyno ramp. I'm also curious if you can drive a low car up onto the HF ones. My original ones seem to work OK for a 3rd or 4th gen TA, but are marginal for my SHO (yes, a stock ride hight SHO has a lower front lip than a lowered 3rd gen TA)
The trans am will go up them with the stock suspension. The Camaro will need wood to clear the front lip.
Plowing off the front of the ramp, the ramp just sliding out forward when I'm halfway up, and the ramp that bent in the middle...I just don't use the ramps anymore, a floor jack and jack stands work for me now on
I use these ramps for over a year I have a Tacoma and I love these no issues so far
I’ve been considering these for awhile. I think I should just buy them, use Jack stands with them, chucks behind the wheels as well and maybe even my floor Jack just to have 3-4 safety nets. Thanks for the video.
I have the older style rhino ramps and they’re way better built then the rhinos ramps out now.
I have the same metal ramps as you. Not as much patina and in good shape. I love ‘em and use them for my Suburban and Highlanders. I do need to paint the ramp section and include some grit or sand since the paint is been removed some on the front wheel drive Highlander wheels slip if there is any dew or moisture which happens occasionally. Those stands are tall! I’ll have to check those out too for mine are like your shorter ones too
I am glad people mentioned the "ramps" when you did one of your first vid on your new Tahoe, as I recall, you used what looked like black plastic ramps, and I freaked! My wifes 04 Tahoe weighs 6,900 LBS!! Don't want to see you smooshed.
Even if the truck drops, it's high enough off the ground so he wouldn't get smooshed lol
Awesome Review Lsxmatt. I know when people hear Harbor Freight they usually give you the shrug with the side eye kind of look at you and me too usually because they picture those cheap cheesy Free gifts you get with the instore or flier coupon when you visit the store and That's true.. and YES they do have some cheaply made items there but in a pinch they will hold up and get the job done. I have however found that with their Power tools and medium to heavy duty automotive tools and other auto repair tools do as advertised and work very well over and over again. Thanks to you... I think I'll grab a pair of those heavy duty Jack Stands you got there, thanks for showing the side by side comparison of the size difference Pretty beefy looking with a nice wide footprint over the standard ones I have a "Coach House Conversion Van the standard size stands do ok but the extra height and bigger saddle and larger ground contact area is much safer. Thanks again Keep doin what you doin. "Learn something new every day" Take a look at the 3 position Leveling ramp set with locking chalk blocks for vehicles as heavy as a tour bus use on uneven terrain or leveling and off ground storage like campers or RV's.

Just ordered the metal ramps after looking at nightmare photos of the Rhino plastic failures. My driveway is gravel so I think the uneven surface may challenge any plastic ramp, was unaware HF had lightweight ramps. Have a minivan and its fairly heavy like your Tahoe, also low to the ground. Those big heavy stands are dope compared the the flimsy metal ones I had for like 30+ years LOL!
I have a pair of rhino ramps and my driveway is gravel. It gets the job done, but it does put the ramps in an awkward position. Which is why i have been considering the steel ones from harbor. How have they been holding up?
I bought race ramps, more expensive but they are lightweight and I'm not worried about them failing.
Rhino ramps at Home depot for 39 bucks, use them for my GMC 2500hd, works great and definitely strong. These Harbor freight ramps are and will do the same thing,

Matt, I have considered getting a set of two to drive up on to be able to crawl under and change the oil and doing other underside work because it seems a lot more convenient than driving up with the front and still having to screw around with jacking up the rear and messing around with jack stands. Not sure if that is regarded as safe or not though.
The method you were thinking of using is exactly what I did last night on my trailblazer, worked like a champ. The only thing is you will want to put something under the ramps so that they do not slide or use four-wheel-drive which worked great for me. Getting the car up and level on all four tires is a game changer! So yes, you have a great idea!
i still have rhino the only weight i put on them is from a dodge stratus and kia so far so good, but i assure myself to use jacks too as a reinforcement and safety
This may sound dumb, but I am a fan of home made 2x8 or 2x10 boards that are staggered around 6" generally starting with a 3' or 4' length on the bottom. The reason is before I finally got my lift with my garage floor being smooth because it was power troweled, those old metal ramps would screech and skip forward on most RWD vehicles. Plus I'd have to start with bricks to pull onto them with even something mundane like a Matrix, 3rd Gens are a totally different dance like you mentioned with the jack or long boards. With just the tip of a couple wood screws sticking out of the bottom of the wooden ramps they'd catch and I could build them for almost free with leftover boards and a couple screws with maybe some cabinet handles if you want to move and hang them easier. We even have varying sizes and rakes for working on tractor trailers at work done in the same fashion but on a larger scale. Make them as high or low or long as you want with a screw gun and a couple minutes of your time. Hope this helps Matt. Still enjoying the progress on my favorite 3rd Gen build and picking up your "Build Your Base Model" shirt to help the cause. Plus I am hopefully going to start cutting holes in the black IROC this weekend for the complete T56 swap I just scored cheap. Going with the 3rd gen pedals that I had for a while even though it came with the 4th gen pedals but 4th gen slave and master. If you read this and off the top of your head, is that the right formula so I don't have to dig through old forum posts and guess who's right?

Those harbor freight jack stands are recalled. I had a set of those. The tooth and pawl engagement is terrible. Like an 1/8th inch at most on cast metal. They will give you store credit if you take them back.

Used the Pittsburgh ramps a half hour ago on a Hyundai Veloster (I thought Pittsburgh was in Pennsylvania), had no problems.

Now you just have to pick up a low profile creeper, instead of crawling on the ground. It makes oil changes so much easier and more comfortable. (or anything else that you have to do under a car).
I would use those older metal ramps over those plastic ones. I have a set of old metal ones use all the time
i would never trust the metal ones. i use these thick grey abs ones and they work like a charm

im looking into buying a 2002 chevy tahoe with 162,000 miles. its priced at 4499 which seems a bit too cheap. do you recommend these trucks? any problems with them i should consider? thanks
That seems like the right price, maybe even a little high. 02’s around here with 120-200k go for 2,000-4,000
i use them for on mu semi truck carries 12000 so this load is not to heavy
I miss my 2003 Tahoe.. I put 305,000 thousand miles on it. Gave it to a family member, he's still driving it! I think it has 320,000 miles + on it now... Same engine! one rebuilt transmission at 220,00 miles!
I had a z-71 Tahoe with 350k on it. Still ran great. Had it since new in 2005. My son turned 16 so I give it to him. 2 months later it’s totaled..
If those ramps trap you under your vehicle, could you post a video of it? I'm kidding, they look good. No creaks or anything.
I use to have a set of plastic ramps,use them on my s10,small truck,then in a 1999 camry,again a not too big car.
One time i got my truck onnthem and one just cracked,fuck that,i went and got me a set from HF.

These things really work well.
I’m only 14 and I wanted to change the oil in our Camry. I bought these but this isn’t my first time using ramps since I’ve used them on a ‘96 accord which is only about 2800 pounds. The Camry is about 3200. A little sketched but they had good reviews and after seeing the jack stands I bought break in half for someone I’m just gonna go with this.

02honeydew i have one just used it today jacking up the ass end of my truck they work but if you could save some money and get their heavy duty floor jack but if for some reason you cant yes they work

I've had my Harbor Freight ramps for over 10 years I have probably had over 100 cars on those ramps and trucks and still going strong you just have to follow the basic no brainer installment of the ramps number one put ramps on flat surface, number two support the other side of the car so it doesn't roll back and the best trick of all put jack stands on the left and right side right behind the ramps because everyone knows the only reason you put it on ramps is to do the oil change anything else you're going to Jack it up and supported a different way
Plastic ramps in cold climate...hmm idk about that bud..I’d stick with a jack, ur 3ton stands, and take a wheel off and put it under for maximum safety.
Used steel ramps once and overshot and never used them again lol. That Daytona Jack from HF is the best, so much in fact Snap-on sued them for “similarities”

I love harbor freight.
They get a bad rap but some of their old school stuff is hard to beat, and a lot of their newer stuff is surprisingly good. One thing I never manage to never leave without is a pack of their black zip ties though, lol.

Plastic ramps explode over time I will never use them again. Its plastic. UV sunlight expires them in short order. I never liked them when I lived in NY an when it was cold out they always slid across cold pavement or near frozen pavement. Be sure to put a jack stand under them too in case they give way with weight

I just bought a set of rhino ramps today and you show me a picture of a broken one, yikes. They might’ve been stored outside in the sun and heat or they were set up on an uneven surface
