I love the look of the Kånken when it’s worn out. I have mine since grade 9 at school (14 years old) and now I’m 30 years old it was with me through school, university, travel, motherhood and I use it now as my work bag. At this point I’m emotionally attached to it 😂. But it looks good and it’s the same color as yours.

You waited 4 years to review the Kanken; one of the best and thorough reviews I've ever seen. I have the dark forest green kanken with the leather handles and I've used it for sketching trips. I used the sides pockets to carry my cell phone, umbrella, kleenexes, little watercolor sets...anything that I need quickly. Again great video and great presentation.
I just bought my black kånken.. I have wanted it for so long, but I didn't have money to buy a new one, so I bought it used.. I totally agree with you. I am a second owner, and it is still in good condition and I love it and I use it as my everday bag.
I got one from a flea Market for €2 It’s pretty worn out, but with a bit of cleaning, it’ll Look good Also the clasps and zippers work like new My only complaint is also the straps They really do cut into the skin if you’re carrying heavy stuff And I, for one, can’t afford to get some padding I might as well sew my own I guess :))
Just a tip for people. They have the 13in laptop version witch is the same size as the classic. It has a padded laptop pouch (no need to keep the seat pad) so it’s super nice on your back and it come with padded straps. Also the side pockets is for a umbrella not water bottle. I also have a mini and both have been through the wash no issue.

I’ve had the classic for about 3 years. I’ve traveled all around, road trips and international and it holds the essentials, cameras, jacket and small journals/books. I wouldn’t say it was the best backpack to use as a student who needs to carry a lot of books and a laptop. But it is nice to use on the easy light days for school.
My first bag I bought in Sweden 40 years ago. I love the back reinforcement and often pull it out as a seat cushion for me. I draw in nature, the drawing pad fits perfectly and it is my constant companion on all trips.
I have had my green Kanken for over 5 years and I still really love it! Back in High school it fit my large folder, books and more, in university it fit my laptop, water, food. Now it is my travel / everyday bag and I still absolutely love it
I recently 'upgraded' my Kanken from a regular classic to the Greenland version which can be waxed more easily. When out and about on a motorbike it can get grubby. but with a decent waxing the dirt pretty much rolls off and the contents stay dry!

@@elizabethcarroll8526 Yes. I have both. Personally I like Re-Kanken better because of the embedded logo, lighter/softer fabric and it isn't prone to dust. But if you prefer durability and crisp fabric, then the original Kanken might be for you.

Me and my girls all wear Kånken bags to Work and school. I and my oldest girl has the ”small computer” Kånken that has padded sholderstraps. My mom is still using my old pree school Konken in the worst 70-s orange ever😅 Mostly on picnic and for walks in the forrest. If you sant your Kånken to be waterproof there is a wax you can use. I’ve used it for our bags and its the best ever! Keps the bag cleaner as well 😊

I live in Zambia and mine is an interesting story: I went to a typical African market where they sell all kinds of 2nd-hand goods - clothes, shoes, bags, etc. So, I spotted a kanken in pink similar to the ones in the video and immediately grabbed it, examined it and discovered that it was an original kanken! In. Pristine. Condition. I asked how much it was and the response was the equivalent of US$3 (yes, THREE!!) in the local currency. In my heart, I was like 'Whaaaat?!' Outwardly, I maintained a facial demeanour which a poker player would have been proud of! Needless to say and with absolutely zero hesitation, I bought it; and now, my daughter is, ostensibly, the only proud owner of a Kanken in the whole of Zambia!
I hope it's not the case, but because these bags sell for so much, there are a lot of counterfeits around. In London's Camden market dozens of stalls sell hundreds of fake Fjallraven's a day. They can be pretty good quality actually!
Initially, I thought that it was a fake; therefore, as soon as I got back to my house , I took the liberty of comparing with the real kankens on some real/fake comparison websites. To my pleasant shock, it turned out to be a real one! Maybe some misbehaving daughter somewhere in the kanken-owning universe ticked off her mum; and said ticked-off mum decided to punish the daughter not with the standard "Go to your room young lady!" but with a "Kiss your Kanken auf wiedersehen!" And now it is in Zambia eliciting envy from people who know Kankens!
I've had this same backpack for 4 years now, I use it for school, to go to the beach, when it´s raining, or snowing and it's the BEST!!! Great video!!! ☺
I have had my Kanken Re-Kanken for 2 years and apart from the water bottle spaces (which are also too tight!), I still love it 💚 Lovely calming and informative video! I bought the shoulder pads as well, but as you say, if carrying heavier items all the time, I would probably use a different backpack.
I had mine for 6 years now, use as my uni school bag, carry-on bag when travel, or just my luggage when going for short term vacation, honestly everywhere I go. Definitely worth it!
You can easily put it in the washing machine (and dryer) - nothing happens to the bag if you do that! I always do that, and mine also looks like the first day I bought it 😵🤪
i have put my kanken bag in the washing machine 3 times and it still looks in great condition + the colour hasn't faded (i got it in CORAL). i have had this bag for 4 years now
I just bought my first Kanken (sorry, we don’t have the accent on our keyboard) bag for my birthday this month. I chose the colour black and red “plaid”(?) because it looks like an old lumberjack’s shirt and these are the colours of my country (Canada). Thanks for this great video. 🇨🇦
I am getting a few kankens throughout the years so my children can use one that is perfect for them. I am so glad I get to pass my bags on to my babies.
I had one for a bit more than a year and I regretted the purchase every day. All the problems I found are mentioned in the video (tight waterbottle pockets, not waterproof, not machine-washable, uncomfortable straps, uncomfortable if you don't use the padding of the back...), and these were too much for me. I also got it in yellow, which made it extremely dirty. However if you can overcome this I guess it can be a good choice, the design is pretty and it doesn't really fall apart with use.
i know this is 6 months late but i’d like to address and answer a question i found in the comments, the “water bottle” pockets are actually umbrella pockets! they do sell attachable water bottle pockets now. the bag is also water resistant, i’m about to be a senior in high school and i can say i’ve never had a problem with my school bags not being water proof or resistant, i bring an umbrella to school and even then if it rains and i use my bag as an umbrella, my binder is protecting my papers from getting wet. i’m obviously not trying to sell you on the bag just addressing :) i’d also like to say i love when bags and shoes are messed up and dirty. i think it looks lived in and used. you can do light cleaning and i think jansport makes a special backpack cleaner you can check out, but for example i feel like white converse are meant to get scuffed and dirty and lived in, same with these bags. i’m sorry you don’t like it, you can definitely consider selling it on an app like mercari or depop. hope this helped :)
I once saw a discussion on Reddit where a guy asked whether a Kanken he found was genuine or fake. The verdict was that it's fake, and I now see same differences in your backpack as well. If you compare the fox logo with official website images, the small circle above "A" in "Kanken" should touch the tip of the letter. It doesn't in your case. Also, circles above "A" in the upper word are way too small. Do you think that's possible it's a fake?
I was thinking the same thing. Plus it doesn’t have the flag or the Swedish crown or whatever it is on the inside of the bag. I do think that this is not a genuine Kånken.
My kanken which I’ve had for two years now is actually a bit more waterproof so I think that it varies a bit. As a student who rode to school, I’ve had the bag out in the pouring rain with my laptop and have ridden to school in the rain an infinite amount of times and everything was perfectly fine. So maybe take that into account.
I love my Kanken too, despite the cons. I've had mine 3 years and I first bought one for my younger sister about 6 years ago. She asked for a cool backpack. Mine's oxblood red with blue straps. I bought those new attachable straps recently thinking it was navy but... nope. Navy's darker. My Kanken's been through so many things. Hiking trips, work, day trips. I carried it when I was getting my car serviced and the receptionist told me her 11-year-old daughter wanted one because of the influencers she sees on UA-cam but it was too expensive. I agree, it's a very expensive bag to buy for a 5th grader, and if you have 4 or 5 kids. My sister was graduating high school when I bought her the bag. I also bought a new mini purple with rainbow straps this year, and perhaps it can serve as a hand-me-down when I have kids. For now, it's a cute day bag when I was to look casual and not wear a handbag.
it's amazing when things last a long time and in good condition! I would buy one of these if I didn't have my red Eastpack: it has lasted me 18 years so far and it still looks great 😀

Although the waterproof "layer" wore off in the first 10 years to be honest

I’ve always been on the fence about this bag, but the water bottle pockets and not being waterproof is a dealbreaker for me. Where I live it rains quite a bit and the summers are extremely hot and humid. If I happen to buy a bag that can’t take the rain I usually give it away. It looks like a good travel bag for me but I already have cheaper good quality bags that get the job done. However I love the simple design of Kankens.
Thank you for your thorough and honest review! I was considering a Kanken a few years ago but ended up buying a much cheaper North Face Vault. This just confirmed my reservations with Kanken, it would never be a good bag for me.
I have three - one military green color, one black mini, and one all black XL. ☺️ It’s worth it since the look is timeless. You don’t tend to look like a tourist/foreigner when visiting a new place, even if you are.
I got the classic in black and the 17" in forest green both Christmas presents from different times. And I love them. I use the 17" for when I travel for a couple of days. And I'm surprised how much stuff you can fit in there.
I have two Kanken bags for 6 years now. 15” laptop in forest green and the classic in blue ridge. Since I need to carry a laptop with me almost every single day, I wear the 15” for 90% of my time. The straps are so comfortable compared with the classic ones. Would definitely recommend these bags!
I bought a kanken mini (green with pink straps) for myself as an 18 yo gift now im almost 22 and it still looks firm. my classmates and friends would always be amazed about how much i can fit in it (my ipad, keyboard, waterbottle), i also liked getting compliments about how cute my bag is 😅😅 it holds up really well and i dont see not using it for another 5 yrs. the straps can be straining when worn for long thats why i didnt plan to use it as a school bag especially when using it to carry a laptop. I would wear a much more padded bag to save my back. i only use my kanken mini when school days are short and there isnt much to bring..

I bought my bag back in 2017 and I absolutely love my Kanken! It’s dirty, but it’s given it that worn look I really enjoy. I may not have used it during this past year due to COVID but I’ll still continue using it once we go back to school
I have the kanken in orchid and I have patches that are ironed on that are space and movement themed like being against animal cruelty , recycling and other things !!!
Hello Victoria ! I own a black Kanken, more suitable and versatile for me cause i wear mostly black or dark coats. I like the design so much and it is really an amazing backpack. I also love the colors of your bag ! I personally use the side pockets for my phone , earphones, and my mask. I never thought it was designed for water bottles actually hahaha... The only thing i've noticed after a few months is that the pull tab of the zipper has lost a little bit of its black paint but i really don't mind... Have a nice Sunday !!
Kaw'ngken. That's how you pronounce it in swedish. I got my first back in 1984. I still have and use it. Since then I have bought several others like the haul pack which is my favourite right now.
I bought a re-kanken grey because the material is said to be more stiff and I had the feeling that over a long time it tends to still stay in shape :) Great video btw !!
i have the forest green one cause it was the only colour available and i love it !! it has just arrived today and i had got it for half price, it is in such good condition and 100% new and original. i do recommend that you hand wash it as the material gets ruined if you put it in the washer, so keep that in mind!! overall, i am definetely going to use this bag for a very long time and this is such a good review! x
I bought one second hand and have had it since last summer and I love it plus its already worn in and the dye is faded perfectly so I dont have to worry about not wanting to bring it places because its not new looking and can be dragged everywhere 🥰
These bags last decades. I currently use Fjällräven's Greenland shoulder bag as the G-1000 fabric is very easily rewaxed, keeping it waterproof. It includes a padded compartment that can hold some laptops. Mine is in the dusk (gray) color.
My aunt got a red and blue Kånken when she was 7 years old. She is 15 years older than me. I got it when I was 17 and still use it every week at the age of 33. So, this Kånken is 41 years old and still in good condition!
I bought mines like 5 years ago (in pink) and I still use it to work to this day 😅 it’s pretty worn out but it’s still durable ! It does have a tiny whole in the bottom but that’s about it! I’m thinking of buying another one :)
The IKEA plastic water bottles fit perfectly. For an insulated option: the Swell bottles fit, too. I own three (Classic in Navy and Ocean Green, and a 13" Laptop version in Acorn) and love them... My daughter uses a black 17" laptop version for school and a green Classic for leisure... They have all held up perfectly for years.
@@raapyna8544 lol I’ve had my Kånken mini for a year now and I love it! I wouldn’t buy the standard size one though because it just wouldn’t fit my needs. I just use my Under Armour backpack if I need a standard size bag.
@@Saturn890 I need to get mine patched, I think I've had it for about 5 years now. I lost the sitting pad that was supporting the back wall so I think that has contributed. If they have those separately I'll get a new one to keep in better shape.
Just got the re-kanken mini in ox red. The decision for the mini is because I don't need to carry a laptop. I want it for city travel and casual hiking and it all fits perfectly. Yesterday my bag had: A knitted sweater, a knitted hat, my regular glasses case and sun glasses case, water bottle, granola bar, my card wallet, phone charger, lip balm, 2 small sunscreen bottles, a small bag with my makeup, and my phone fits perfectly on the side pocket (a little tight but that is great to not worry about pick-pockets). Overall I can tell this is going to be a great backpack for many many years to come.
I actually have to sizes of this bag since I loved the first one so much and wanted a more nutral color. I like that the bigger one has an extra compartment for my laptop and there is more space for notbooks then. And even if the bag offers more space it does not look too big (my initial doubts). The straps of the bigger one are more comfortable and look nicer then regular once in my opinion. + The best feature is the shape, I think a lot of bags have some unused space due to the rounded shape. + I also enjoyed open the sipper completely (for example on short trips). - But I also made some negative experience: I put some books and notebooks in my red bag for school and they all get red edges :( I did not experince the same with my new drak green one yet (but I did not used it that often for books ect) Greetings from Germany

Great video... I have the stripped black, the fog, the warm yellow and the pink... I use Swell water bottles on both sides, one for plain water and another for hot coffee. Entertain me throughout my day outside and its really the most practical backpack.
You can make the bag waterproof and last a lot longer by using Fjällrävens DWR spray. You just soke the bag with water. Then spray the bag and gently rub the spray in to the fabric. Then you can take a blowdryer to activate the spray. This will make your bag stronger and waterproof.
I’ve been using the mini in ox red for over a year now and I love it. But some days it isn’t big enough for all my stuff for work, so I bought the classic in brick this week s as it was on sale. Great for work days and travelling. My daughter has been using need a classic for school for a couple of years now and we’ve had no problems.
@@Angelica-Pickles well I have the pink one and the deep forest one and well, it's true that the pink one stains more easily but you have to be dumb to use the pink one at school where it's most probably to get stained. it's better to have darker color for school and if you use the pink one as a backpack for hanging out with friends and stuff then it won't get as dirty
i'm months late but!! i have mine in black and have been using it religiously up until the quarantine starts. I've been using it for almost 6 years mainly for school but also travels. + you'd be surprised by how many things it fits as a carry on 😂 i got my small camera bag, makeup pouch, kindle, headphone, laptop, and chargers in it. sure my back hurts waiting for my flight but hey, it works for me! + yes, the side compartment is not for your regular water bottle sadly, but i usually just put my phone and umbrella there and have my water bottle in hand + you can make it waterproof by using the wax bar (?) but it's not a permanent solution, you have to reapply now and then, but! still, the zip part will not be waterproof but as long as you cover the zip then it's okay i guess (lived in Seattle for a while surviving with this bag but please take my exp with grain of salt) + it's expensive but it's durable and works for me so it's really worth it! + it looks cute in pics too 😜

I think I might get this bag for myself in place of a purse. I carry a lululemon belt bag now. But even after only a couple months of use, you can tell the quality is not that great. I really like the fog color you have. I think I’ll go with that, graphite, or the Forrest green.
Fjallraven means arctic fox in Swedish. Yay fun facts! My dad field tested gear for REI and Patagonia when he was in his 20s leading climbing expeditions in the Cascades.He would get random stuff that we still use today on a lot of our trips. But a few months ago I was going through some gear because he gifted me his old backpacking dishes, and I came across one of these! It's It has to be about 40 years old. So random, but it's something he got as a promotional thing I think. Here I thought they were a newer company within the last few years, but turns out they've been around! A testament to quality if I ever saw one.
They make a special pouch with a wireframe that hangs off those side pockets so you can put a water bottle in it without taking up any internal space. And if you live in a rainy area like I do, they sell rain covers for it too.
I have the Kanken mini in frost green and I love it. I’ve had my backpack for about 4 years and I use it as a purse or a travel bag. I wear it all the time but it does look dirty since it’s a brighter color.
Mine is 5 years old now. It has been to my motherland, it’s own motherland, 2 years of 6th form, 2 years (and counting) of university, 3 jobs, 5 countries, house parties, sleepovers, many flights between home and uni, damn I use it almost every day. You can definitely see the wear but it has so many years of use left in it. 100% worth the money, I am in love with it
I love this bag so much I bought my first Kanken between seventh and eighth grade and now I own two more and I love them! My two oldest have traveled to Switzerland, Italy, Austria, they‘ve seen almost every place in Turkey (Istanbul, Black Sea, Mediterranean, etc.) and been to almost every trip inside of my own country. They‘ve seen the Berlin wall, they were on my lap when in a boat from Asia to Europe, they‘ve seen two of the 7 world wonders and carried my bags since seventh grade religiously! Totally got the money‘s worth from these bags. I‘m so obsessed I bought myself a new one (purple) yesterday for my birthday.
I have carried a Kånken since I was in school. You can easily make it waterproof by using there G-1000 wax. I have been doing this with my Fjällraven jackets and bags for as long as I can remember. Hope this is helpful.
I have the exact same one and the kid size in light blue, they are the best backpacks I’ve owned. I have the same gripes as you with regard to the water bottle pockets. I recommend these bags to everyone!
I just bought one in that colour but with stripes . It fits everything in it and still feels relatively light. Too soon to tell if its worth the money. I will say it is made of very good quality stuff and you can feel it. I love the top handles and the way it zips to the bottom however I would like an extra side pocket in the bag for a cellphone or charger. It looks beautiful and I enjoy using it however I would say, if you get the classic, you may need strap pads as it can be slightly uncomfortable when heavy.
My phone fits nicely in the side pocket! I've thought about getting the strap pads, but I'm pretty well used to it now just the way it is. I've had it for about 6 months now & I really love it! Mine is a classic in the Super Grey color. It's a really good color, because it doesn't get very dirty & if something does get on it, it's really easy just to wipe it off, with a damp cloth.
I had the exact same one ! Classic size and fog colour. Even though it was visually pleasing I regret buying it. Didn’t fit my needs and the straps hurt. Still a nice bag though !
You should try getting some Scotch Guard spray that would make it waterproof. I use it on my expensive boots, bags and such! I would check and call Kanken themselves at their customer service number to make sure it is safe to use on the bag and if it isn't do they recommend another spray or product to weather/ water proof the bag.
The only downside is that I personally think it is way overprised, you cant fit that many school books and a lynchbox. I am in love with the backpack tho:)
My bag of choice has been the North Face Overhaul 40. Built like a tank with a real harness and basically bomb proof. Very water resistant. Handles big loads easily.

They aren’t umbrella pockets. They were designed too hold newspapers for the Swedish kids in the 70’s as they had to do current events.

Just a tip for people. They have the 13in laptop version witch is the same size as the classic. It has a padded laptop pouch (no need to keep the seat pad) so it’s super nice on your back and it come with padded straps. Also the side pockets is for a umbrella not water bottle. I also have a mini and both have been through the wash no issue.

I’ve had the classic for about 3 years. I’ve traveled all around, road trips and international and it holds the essentials, cameras, jacket and small journals/books. I wouldn’t say it was the best backpack to use as a student who needs to carry a lot of books and a laptop. But it is nice to use on the easy light days for school.

My first bag I bought in Sweden 40 years ago. I love the back reinforcement and often pull it out as a seat cushion for me. I draw in nature, the drawing pad fits perfectly and it is my constant companion on all trips.
I have had my green Kanken for over 5 years and I still really love it! Back in High school it fit my large folder, books and more, in university it fit my laptop, water, food. Now it is my travel / everyday bag and I still absolutely love it

I recently 'upgraded' my Kanken from a regular classic to the Greenland version which can be waxed more easily. When out and about on a motorbike it can get grubby. but with a decent waxing the dirt pretty much rolls off and the contents stay dry!
I recently purchased a yellow one! I love it! I recommend the biggest size for school as it as a greater capacity for books or laptops!! 💕

I've been wearing my Rekanken daily for nearly 3 years and it still looks like new. I still love it. So yes, it's worth it.

@@elizabethcarroll8526 Yes. I have both. Personally I like Re-Kanken better because of the embedded logo, lighter/softer fabric and it isn't prone to dust. But if you prefer durability and crisp fabric, then the original Kanken might be for you.

Me and my girls all wear Kånken bags to Work and school. I and my oldest girl has the ”small computer” Kånken that has padded sholderstraps. My mom is still using my old pree school Konken in the worst 70-s orange ever😅 Mostly on picnic and for walks in the forrest. If you sant your Kånken to be waterproof there is a wax you can use. I’ve used it for our bags and its the best ever! Keps the bag cleaner as well 😊

I live in Zambia and mine is an interesting story: I went to a typical African market where they sell all kinds of 2nd-hand goods - clothes, shoes, bags, etc.
So, I spotted a kanken in pink similar to the ones in the video and immediately grabbed it, examined it and discovered that it was an original kanken! In. Pristine. Condition. I asked how much it was and the response was the equivalent of US$3 (yes, THREE!!) in the local currency. In my heart, I was like 'Whaaaat?!' Outwardly, I maintained a facial demeanour which a poker player would have been proud of!
Needless to say and with absolutely zero hesitation, I bought it; and now, my daughter is, ostensibly, the only proud owner of a Kanken in the whole of Zambia!

I hope it's not the case, but because these bags sell for so much, there are a lot of counterfeits around. In London's Camden market dozens of stalls sell hundreds of fake Fjallraven's a day. They can be pretty good quality actually!
Initially, I thought that it was a fake; therefore, as soon as I got back to my house , I took the liberty of comparing with the real kankens on some real/fake comparison websites.
To my pleasant shock, it turned out to be a real one! Maybe some misbehaving daughter somewhere in the kanken-owning universe ticked off her mum; and said ticked-off mum decided to punish the daughter not with the standard "Go to your room young lady!" but with a "Kiss your Kanken auf wiedersehen!"
And now it is in Zambia eliciting envy from people who know Kankens!

You can easily put it in the washing machine (and dryer) - nothing happens to the bag if you do that! I always do that, and mine also looks like the first day I bought it 😵🤪
I'm not entirely sure about this but I think Fjallraven sells wax that you can treat the bag with to make it more waterproof and sturdy.

I am getting a few kankens throughout the years so my children can use one that is perfect for them. I am so glad I get to pass my bags on to my babies.
I had one for a bit more than a year and I regretted the purchase every day. All the problems I found are mentioned in the video (tight waterbottle pockets, not waterproof, not machine-washable, uncomfortable straps, uncomfortable if you don't use the padding of the back...), and these were too much for me. I also got it in yellow, which made it extremely dirty. However if you can overcome this I guess it can be a good choice, the design is pretty and it doesn't really fall apart with use.

i know this is 6 months late but i’d like to address and answer a question i found in the comments, the “water bottle” pockets are actually umbrella pockets! they do sell attachable water bottle pockets now. the bag is also water resistant, i’m about to be a senior in high school and i can say i’ve never had a problem with my school bags not being water proof or resistant, i bring an umbrella to school and even then if it rains and i use my bag as an umbrella, my binder is protecting my papers from getting wet. i’m obviously not trying to sell you on the bag just addressing :) i’d also like to say i love when bags and shoes are messed up and dirty. i think it looks lived in and used. you can do light cleaning and i think jansport makes a special backpack cleaner you can check out, but for example i feel like white converse are meant to get scuffed and dirty and lived in, same with these bags. i’m sorry you don’t like it, you can definitely consider selling it on an app like mercari or depop. hope this helped :)
I once saw a discussion on Reddit where a guy asked whether a Kanken he found was genuine or fake. The verdict was that it's fake, and I now see same differences in your backpack as well. If you compare the fox logo with official website images, the small circle above "A" in "Kanken" should touch the tip of the letter. It doesn't in your case. Also, circles above "A" in the upper word are way too small. Do you think that's possible it's a fake?
I was thinking the same thing. Plus it doesn’t have the flag or the Swedish crown or whatever it is on the inside of the bag. I do think that this is not a genuine Kånken.

My kanken which I’ve had for two years now is actually a bit more waterproof so I think that it varies a bit. As a student who rode to school, I’ve had the bag out in the pouring rain with my laptop and have ridden to school in the rain an infinite amount of times and everything was perfectly fine. So maybe take that into account.
I love my Kanken too, despite the cons. I've had mine 3 years and I first bought one for my younger sister about 6 years ago. She asked for a cool backpack. Mine's oxblood red with blue straps. I bought those new attachable straps recently thinking it was navy but... nope. Navy's darker. My Kanken's been through so many things. Hiking trips, work, day trips. I carried it when I was getting my car serviced and the receptionist told me her 11-year-old daughter wanted one because of the influencers she sees on UA-cam but it was too expensive. I agree, it's a very expensive bag to buy for a 5th grader, and if you have 4 or 5 kids. My sister was graduating high school when I bought her the bag. I also bought a new mini purple with rainbow straps this year, and perhaps it can serve as a hand-me-down when I have kids. For now, it's a cute day bag when I was to look casual and not wear a handbag.

In my country, Eastpack and Kanken have good reputations because of their good quality. Although the waterproof "layer" wore off in the first 10 years to be honest

I’ve always been on the fence about this bag, but the water bottle pockets and not being waterproof is a dealbreaker for me. Where I live it rains quite a bit and the summers are extremely hot and humid. If I happen to buy a bag that can’t take the rain I usually give it away. It looks like a good travel bag for me but I already have cheaper good quality bags that get the job done. However I love the simple design of Kankens.

I have two Kanken bags for 6 years now. 15” laptop in forest green and the classic in blue ridge. Since I need to carry a laptop with me almost every single day, I wear the 15” for 90% of my time. The straps are so comfortable compared with the classic ones. Would definitely recommend these bags!

I bought a kanken mini (green with pink straps) for myself as an 18 yo gift now im almost 22 and it still looks firm. my classmates and friends would always be amazed about how much i can fit in it (my ipad, keyboard, waterbottle), i also liked getting compliments about how cute my bag is 😅😅 it holds up really well and i dont see not using it for another 5 yrs. the straps can be straining when worn for long thats why i didnt plan to use it as a school bag especially when using it to carry a laptop. I would wear a much more padded bag to save my back. i only use my kanken mini when school days are short and there isnt much to bring..

Hello Victoria ! I own a black Kanken, more suitable and versatile for me cause i wear mostly black or dark coats. I like the design so much and it is really an amazing backpack. I also love the colors of your bag ! I personally use the side pockets for my phone , earphones, and my mask. I never thought it was designed for water bottles actually hahaha... The only thing i've noticed after a few months is that the pull tab of the zipper has lost a little bit of its black paint but i really don't mind...

Kaw'ngken. That's how you pronounce it in swedish. I got my first back in 1984. I still have and use it. Since then I have bought several others like the haul pack which is my favourite right now.
I bought a re-kanken grey because the material is said to be more stiff and I had the feeling that over a long time it tends to still stay in shape :)

These bags last decades. I currently use Fjällräven's Greenland shoulder bag as the G-1000 fabric is very easily rewaxed, keeping it waterproof. It includes a padded compartment that can hold some laptops. Mine is in the dusk (gray) color.
My aunt got a red and blue Kånken when she was 7 years old. She is 15 years older than me.
I got it when I was 17 and still use it every week at the age of 33. So, this Kånken is 41 years old and still in good condition!

The IKEA plastic water bottles fit perfectly. For an insulated option: the Swell bottles fit, too. I own three (Classic in Navy and Ocean Green, and a 13" Laptop version in Acorn) and love them... My daughter uses a black 17" laptop version for school and a green Classic for leisure... They have all held up perfectly for years.

Just got the re-kanken mini in ox red. The decision for the mini is because I don't need to carry a laptop. I want it for city travel and casual hiking and it all fits perfectly. Yesterday my bag had: A knitted sweater, a knitted hat, my regular glasses case and sun glasses case, water bottle, granola bar, my card wallet, phone charger, lip balm, 2 small sunscreen bottles, a small bag with my makeup, and my phone fits perfectly on the side pocket (a little tight but that is great to not worry about pick-pockets).
Overall I can tell this is going to be a great backpack for many many years to come.
I actually have to sizes of this bag since I loved the first one so much and wanted a more nutral color. I like that the bigger one has an extra compartment for my laptop and there is more space for notbooks then. And even if the bag offers more space it does not look too big (my initial doubts). The straps of the bigger one are more comfortable and look nicer then regular once in my opinion.
+ The best feature is the shape, I think a lot of bags have some unused space due to the rounded shape.
+ I also enjoyed open the sipper completely (for example on short trips).
- But I also made some negative experience: I put some books and notebooks in my red bag for school and they all get red edges :( I did not experince the same with my new drak green one yet (but I did not used it that often for books ect)

Great video... I have the stripped black, the fog, the warm yellow and the pink... I use Swell water bottles on both sides, one for plain water and another for hot coffee. Entertain me throughout my day outside and its really the most practical backpack.

You can make the bag waterproof and last a lot longer by using Fjällrävens DWR spray. You just soke the bag with water. Then spray the bag and gently rub the spray in to the fabric. Then you can take a blowdryer to activate the spray. This will make your bag stronger and waterproof.
I’ve been using the mini in ox red for over a year now and I love it. But some days it isn’t big enough for all my stuff for work, so I bought the classic in brick this week s as it was on sale. Great for work days and travelling. My daughter has been using need a classic for school for a couple of years now and we’ve had no problems.

i'm months late but!! i have mine in black and have been using it religiously up until the quarantine starts. I've been using it for almost 6 years mainly for school but also travels.
+ you'd be surprised by how many things it fits as a carry on 😂 i got my small camera bag, makeup pouch, kindle, headphone, laptop, and chargers in it. sure my back hurts waiting for my flight but hey, it works for me!
+ yes, the side compartment is not for your regular water bottle sadly, but i usually just put my phone and umbrella there and have my water bottle in hand
+ you can make it waterproof by using the wax bar (?) but it's not a permanent solution, you have to reapply now and then, but! still, the zip part will not be waterproof but as long as you cover the zip then it's okay i guess (lived in Seattle for a while surviving with this bag but please take my exp with grain of salt)
+ it's expensive but it's durable and works for me so it's really worth it!

I think I might get this bag for myself in place of a purse. I carry a lululemon belt bag now. But even after only a couple months of use, you can tell the quality is not that great. I really like the fog color you have. I think I’ll go with that, graphite, or the Forrest green.

My dad field tested gear for REI and Patagonia when he was in his 20s leading climbing expeditions in the Cascades.He would get random stuff that we still use today on a lot of our trips. But a few months ago I was going through some gear because he gifted me his old backpacking dishes, and I came across one of these! It's It has to be about 40 years old. So random, but it's something he got as a promotional thing I think. Here I thought they were a newer company within the last few years, but turns out they've been around! A testament to quality if I ever saw one.

They make a special pouch with a wireframe that hangs off those side pockets so you can put a water bottle in it without taking up any internal space. And if you live in a rainy area like I do, they sell rain covers for it too.
I have mine in the color uncle blue & I've had it for over 5 years! Definitely one of my best purchases.

I have the Kanken mini in frost green and I love it. I’ve had my backpack for about 4 years and I use it as a purse or a travel bag. I wear it all the time but it does look dirty since it’s a brighter color.

Mine is 5 years old now. It has been to my motherland, it’s own motherland, 2 years of 6th form, 2 years (and counting) of university, 3 jobs, 5 countries, house parties, sleepovers, many flights between home and uni, damn I use it almost every day. You can definitely see the wear but it has so many years of use left in it. 100% worth the money, I am in love with it
I love this bag so much I bought my first Kanken between seventh and eighth grade and now I own two more and I love them! My two oldest have traveled to Switzerland, Italy, Austria, they‘ve seen almost every place in Turkey (Istanbul, Black Sea, Mediterranean, etc.) and been to almost every trip inside of my own country. They‘ve seen the Berlin wall, they were on my lap when in a boat from Asia to Europe, they‘ve seen two of the 7 world wonders and carried my bags since seventh grade religiously! Totally got the money‘s worth from these bags. I‘m so obsessed I bought myself a new one (purple) yesterday for my birthday.
I have carried a Kånken since I was in school. You can easily make it waterproof by using there G-1000 wax. I have been doing this with my Fjällraven jackets and bags for as long as I can remember. Hope this is helpful.
I have the exact same one and the kid size in light blue, they are the best backpacks I’ve owned. I have the same gripes as you with regard to the water bottle pockets. I recommend these bags to everyone!

I just bought one in that colour but with stripes . It fits everything in it and still feels relatively light. Too soon to tell if its worth the money. I will say it is made of very good quality stuff and you can feel it. I love the top handles and the way it zips to the bottom however I would like an extra side pocket in the bag for a cellphone or charger. It looks beautiful and I enjoy using it however I would say, if you get the classic, you may need strap pads as it can be slightly uncomfortable when heavy.
My phone fits nicely in the side pocket! I've thought about getting the strap pads, but I'm pretty well used to it now just the way it is. I've had it for about 6 months now & I really love it! Mine is a classic in the Super Grey color. It's a really good color, because it doesn't get very dirty & if something does get on it, it's really easy just to wipe it off, with a damp cloth.

I had the exact same one ! Classic size and fog colour. Even though it was visually pleasing I regret buying it. Didn’t fit my needs and the straps hurt. Still a nice bag though !

You should try getting some Scotch Guard spray that would make it waterproof. I use it on my expensive boots, bags and such! I would check and call Kanken themselves at their customer service number to make sure it is safe to use on the bag and if it isn't do they recommend another spray or product to weather/ water proof the bag.
The only downside is that I personally think it is way overprised, you cant fit that many school books and a lynchbox. I am in love with the backpack tho:)
My bag of choice has been the North Face Overhaul 40. Built like a tank with a real harness and basically bomb proof. Very water resistant. Handles big loads easily.
