Seems to me that the Kånken could be a really good bag if it got updated. Keep the overall aesthetic but add an extra internal compartment, expand the side pockets, add padding to the straps (and everywhere else), etc. Call it the Kånken Två (Swedish for two). I know they kind of did that with the one that includes a laptop compartment but they could go farther.
The thing is, they do sell exterior water bottle holders, interior pockets/organizers, chest straps, and shoulder pads for these backpacks. Hoooowever, it's all sold separately so between the initial cost of the backpack + all the accessories you'd be better off just buying a backpack that'll suit your needs from the get-go. But that's just our two cents 😅

@@FutureProofTV The separate shoulder pads aren't particularly ergonomic in my experience either, so it's not a huge upgrade. I have big ergonomic problems with the kånkens
The prime shoulder strap solution is to use those wrap-around seatbelt pads/covers that everyone had in the 90s. Also great for side-carry bags and satchels.
I just wish people knew how durable those backpacks are, my dad has had one for over 30 years that's still on good condition, even the one Ive had since middle school Is in perfect condition if maybe a bit dirty

I wore mine out, but I think I got it when I was 4 and then used it more or less daily (or at least every time I needed a backpack) for about 20 years before I wore it out. Still miss it.
My girlfriend's has started to rip after about 5 years.
I use mine for work, going out for beers(my minis), beach, kayaking, small hikes, bike rides, day and some weekend trips. My work kanken has my MacBook nintendo switch kindle 3 notebooks my chargers and a couple of personal hygiene items and it never feels bulky. The bag opens all the way so it’s easy to look for items and put them away. Also, I don’t like feeling like I am hitting everyone and everything with my bag around me when I’m walking around. And it doesn’t hurt that they look nice so you can wear it most places without looking like you live out of your backpack when you actually do. I really do love my kanken bag.
They are not that durable, if you take care of it I'm sure it can be but at the same time what are you doing that would wear it down anyway?

Something I love about the Kanken is how washable it is. I’ve had mine for 6 years and it’s gone through the washing machine many times. The design allows for it to become extremely flat, even foldable, which I love for travelling with it. It’s my partner and I’s go to day-bag. The side pockets could definitely be wider, but to its credit, it perfectly fits my umbrella, which has never fallen out of the side pockets, whereas other packs I’ve had have left my umbrella loosy goosey and falling out whenever I’ve bent down.

@@ploypailin9357 as far as i know, you shouldn't wash the kanken. like soak them in water. it was stated in the manual. it is recommended to just wipe with damp cloth. bcos if you wash them, it can degrade the durability

Yup! When I travel, I fold my Kanken inside of a larger backpack or suitcase. Then I use the kanken for day outings to take only what I need and leave my luggage elsewhere.
I think many Kanken fans like it as a more comfortable handbag/daybag, it's not as clunky as most other backpacks and being colourful makes it a bit of a fashion statement as well and looks more cute and vintage than practical and technical.
You can easily put it on your lap in a crowded bus instead of on the floor, especially if it contains your wallet and phone- now that cycles back to womens clothes and their appaling lack of (deep) pockets.

Absolutely! Mine is my standard travelling day bag. It folds into my cabin bag, and when i am out exploring and I don’t need everything, but i do need easy to use, and a good size and shape the kånken works for me. (lots of specific pockets means i can never find stuff… the lack of pockets along with the folding umbrella pocket is one of my favourite things about my kånken) and on a more urban exploration, my kånken is great for fitting rain coat, novel, packed lunch…. but is also perfect size for cloaking, while keeping my smaller, style chosen cross body purse with only wallet, phone, glasses…. I adore my (decades old) black-ish kånken. When my adult kids were babies it served as a change bag, when I was finishing uni, my perfect campus bag… And when I first got it, it was anonymous, and much less likely to be thieved because it looked like nothing. Small tears have been easy to fix, the zippers have never caused any problem, and it’s been washed many times. Funnily, I don’t think I have ever used it on both shoulders together though…. I have other Fjällräven products thanks to my great experience with my much loved, perfectly sized, simple backpack.
I agree. One thing I hate about most bags is that they’re simply too bulky. A kanken has tons of capacity, yet still looks compact. The perfect urban backpack! Besides the sucky straps.

I think what was missed in the video was that being, or becoming, a "style icon" could be a good thing. Because as I see it, the kanken has the opportunity to become a timeless classic version of a style icon rather than a one hit wonder that dates itself type of style icon. (Dare I say, like the Herman Miller of backpacks... 🤔)
It's true that people bought it because it was trendy, but its also true that the majority of people I know who bought it for that reason have stuck to using it. Why? Functional design promts lasting use and engagement with an item and function never really goes out of style. That's why I think permanently adding any additional padding, strap padding, or larger waterbottle pockets to the kanken design would actually cause an END to people using the bag for as long as they have because it would compromise the modularity of the bag which is a HUGE component to the overall functionality and longevity of the bag.
An overlooked facet of the bag is that it can fit a gamut of styling roles that other backpacks are not able to because of the lack of wardrobe functionality. The bag that you showed as your daily driver undoubtedly trumps the kanken in utility, but I couldn't go directly from school/work to dinner with friends with that backpack without having the bag feel out of place. The kanken however, I could get away with it by starting my day off with a slightly nicer outfit to match. While it may not be the most functional outdoorsy bag on the market, I can do a whole range of outdoor activities without having to worry that the bag will be damaged whether its an intense hike or going on a trip to the beach. Aside from events that require me to dress up, I don't have to think twice, the kanken will typically match the occasion with style, space, and utility that I will need. (Especially for those used to carrying smaller bags/purses everyday: less arm strain, more space, easier access, no style trade off for using a backpack, and it's more cost effective and sustainable than owning traditional handbags for every day use.)
Even if you're still looking for more features like padding or additional pockets, Kanken recently released a whole range of add-ons to the kanken backpacks. Admittedly, I thought it was an unecessary money grab but I've come to really like that decision from them. It addresses the issue that some have with it's sparse features without sacrificing it's core design, overall build quality, and item longevity which hasn't really been seen mainstream in backpacks. Its arguably more sustainable too as well as you don't have to buy another bag rather than using the one you already have. Not to mention, normally it's the smaller finicky parts of bags like pouches or water bottle compartments that split or become damaged first. I hate having to wrestle with the complicated assembly of a backpack and prefer having pieces that are removable to do a much better repair job myself.
While the colours are seen as a lure in for trends and hype, I think its so underrated the importance of Kanken's colour range in terms of innovation within utility focused items. Why do utilitarian/items have to only be offered in brown, black, grey, and charcoal? WHATS WRONG WITH COLOUR??? Kanken made it known that there are sustainable options that offered style and utility without compromising one for the other.

I'm defined biased since I've owned a kanken for 7/8 years now, but I think it does have some characteristics that I struggle to find in other packs: it's rather small but since it's squared, you can open it on three sides and it doesn't have a bunch of pockets it ends up carry so much for its size, so much that it's my chosen weekend bag! It's also super lightweight which is a big pro as there's nothing more annoying than having to carry extra weight for no reason. It's very versatile probably because of its simple design: I've used it as luggage, as schoolbag, as daybag, as grocery bag and on chill hikes. And last but not least, it is freaking durable! I think it's a good compromise for people that want something functional but not technical and yes that do not want to necessarily look like an off duty hiker all the time (i actually look like an off duty hiker a lot of the time, so I got nothing against it). I think however that for the price it sold at today I might not actually buy it, but at the time I got it I'm pretty sure I paid it 70€/65 USD which was lower than most packs at a similar quality and often made by far less sustainable companies. Hey there! Totally agree with a lot of what you've said, and if there's one thing Fjällräven excels at it's product durability. You're definitely spot on about people wanting something a little more street/city friendly than the average hiking backpack, we're just of the opinion that there's better modern options out there that serve the same purpose. My dad bought me an original blue Kånken when I was about 4 and it took me over 20 years of almost daily use to destroy it (and I wasn’t treating it delicately). I still miss it! I have a larger Fjällräven backpack that has served me well for ages, but I still miss my trusty Kånken! It pains me every time I see a Kånken unboxing and the unboxer inevitably tossing the back pad that a) makes the backpack more comfortable to wear and b) serve as a seat/ground cushion for picnics and other excursions. And yes, I’ve used mine for day hikes!
Also, the side pockets are perfectly dimensioned for the water bottles of the day, standard sized Zigg bottles and repurposed syrup bottles that were ubiquitous for every Swedish school child for decades (the Zigg bottles were the fancy ones, most of us reused syrup bottles).
Oh, yeah! And the packability and boxy format makes them perfect as day packs and under seat bags in trains, planes and busses.

@@DziewczynaZKsiegarni I think he meant Sigg. It’s a metal bottle that many of us had as kids at school. I got one for my birthday in third grade and it got stolen :( (but thankfully, my parents could afford a new one)

Really enjoyed the video, and also I feel like there was a missed opportunity to call this "The Rise and Fjall of the Kanken" haha. I'm also curious if y'all will ever do a video on the affect of like algorithmic social media on fashion trends like this. You can be mad at Gen Z, and that might even be valid, but I find it hard to believe people younger than you like wildly different things than people of the same age group did a decade or two ago. However, my understanding of companies whose primary demographic is Gen Z and Millennials is that eyeballs = shareholder profit, so any trends that can keep people on apps for longer are better, even if it doesn't promote responsible consumerism

Oh good question. Shoes might be an interesting way to view the topic? From Uggs a few years back to Nike Airforce 1s, I feel like there's always a new trend to buy new shoes. Haul and unboxing videos are probably the most glaring examples of promoting consumerism for the views. Also makeup/eyeshadow palettes?
Not sure if those are perfect examples. I just feel like the cycle of "thing gets popular, people buy it, new thing gets popular, people buy it even though old thing might not be worn out yet" is really beneficial for the companies who sell the new things, but somehow gets blamed on younger folks, as if we didn't also have people buying houses from catalogues and literally paper clothes several decades back. Consumerism isn't unique to today's young people, today's young people are just using today's technology to talk about it, and it's beneficial to those tech companies to keep them doing that on their platforms

for me, the Kanken is a perfect backpack for a few reasons.
1. I love the design. It fits and compliments most clothes. It stands out without overwhelming the whole look. (mine is a dark grey/black with red straps)
2. The lack of pockets, separators, compartments, etc is actually a feature for me. I’m diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety, and so having less options helps me stay more productive. I know that my two pens, pencil, and a highlighter will always be in the same compartment. I don’t have to think too much about the best way to organize my backpack and so forth.
3. The limited capacity and limited ergonomics also helps as I constantly have the urge to take more books with me than I am going to read. With a Kanken, having 3-4 books plus a laptop will lead to back pain, so I have to restrain myself from the beginning and choose carefully what I am taking with me before leaving the house which helps me to stay more efficient later.
Yes! I have ADHD too and this is why I want the Kanken. My current backpack is a Jansport Big Student, and it’s great, but all those compartments and pockets drive me crazy, along with the sheer size of it. 😂

Yes! Completely agree! I love the limited number of compartments. I know where I put important things like my phone, passport, notebook, and pen, and that's it.
I am possibly one of the few who was introduced to other Fjallraven products through the Kanken. I started out by wanting just a functional backpack which I got with the Kanken and have since spent a not inconsiderable amount on Fjallraven hiking packs, jackets, hats, and a sleeping bag. The thing is all the gear is great at what it does and I haven't had a duff product yet. It's all heavily used and is holding up well to the rigors I put it through, not least a weekend of the hiking backpack being thrown over fences and dragged through ditches. The Kanken was definitely the gateway drug to the pricier Fjallraven gear for me!
As for my original Kanken, it's still going strong five years later and its simplicity, to me, it what makes it a great piece of kit :-)
i gotta say, buying a kanken was one of the BEST investments in my life because these bags can store a surprising amount of stuff. i'm a hairtsylist and when i have photoshoots or ad shoots for which i need to be prepared to do 3-4 looks max, i pack my kit in my kanken and it's so convenient. like those side pockets meant for water bottles fit hair sprays perfectly. plus, i bought mine 10 years ago and it still lives and thrives, even.
I came across fjallraven in New Zealand, I needed a new pair of trekking leggings.. let me tell you the price I paid for those was crazy! Took me 30 mins to convince myself and boy I’m happy I did, best pants I have ever owned.. they are good for anything! Of course my job is outdoors a lot but man , I just can’t believe how durable they are. Maybe 2 and a half years, one or two wears a week and above 100 washes and they still look and feel good, minus a little bit of wear and tear in the crotch area. Never used a kanken but I since bought a great backpack and have been using it daily since.. great products, great company in my opinion

Same experience here but with a trekking jacket, the best pocket and hood configurations I've ever experienced on a jacket and the ability to impregnate the canvas with variable amounts of wax is great.
I switched from a big north face backpack to a medium sized kanken for my senior year of college and unexpectedly, the chronic back pain I had been suffering since high school went away. I think it's probably less due to the kanken's design and more due to the fact that the bag's smaller size forced me to only carry what was absolutely necessary for classes, which greatly reduced the amount of weight I was carrying around all day. But still, it was INCREDIBLE.
I always thinking of the f1 knife when I think of Fjallraven. I didn't even know they made a pack until this video.
I think the Kanken is so popular amongst women exactly because it was made for Swedish children and there are a lot of women in the world that are the size of Swedish children, ha! Me being one of them as an average height east Asian. Also Kanken is great for people with ADHD since it opens ALL THE WAY so it's easier to find things in it instead of digging around hopelessly. The fact that there are only two compartments makes it even more ADHD-friendly since if it's not in the big pocket, it must be in the small pocket. And the slightly useless side pocket is great for storing kitkats, ha! The fact that they're super durable and can handle everything from university textbooks to light hiking gear is a great plus too.
I like how the American migration graphics make the Kånken look like an invasive species.

I freaking love this backpack and I have 3. One for hiking , one for every day, and one for travel. I like it that there are not too many pockets, it’s super light, wash machine friendly and does eliminate any back pain for real. The seat pad is great for sitting on the ground in winter for about 30 min and staying warm. And I would buy their pants , tents what not . I don’t care for instagram selfies and had no idea celebrities wear it:)
Very informative video! My only issue is that the whole “being a fashion icon is bad thing” argument felt very… forced and flimsy? It gave off a vibe of when people think they’re smarter/better than others for hating something popular. To each their own opinions but the arguments seemed very superficial and unimportant, so I feel the video would’ve felt less awkward if those aspects were discussed differently.
Sure it’s not the original company’s vision, but what works works! Fashion is cool, and it would be awesome if the brand expanded their line to make their products functional AND fashionable, like the emerging “techwear” aesthetic. People who buy the backpack might not buy other items from their shop, but that doesn’t really matter if they’re recommending that backpack to their friends or buying them in multiple colors.
What you're arguing is not in the video. What's actually in the video is the critique of buying a thing _just because_ it's a fashion statement. Especially when a thing in question is a not very practical kids backpack from the 70s that's 'in' again purely because of its aesthetics.
It’s interesting to see how Fjällräven as a brand is perceived in other countries. For me as a Swede, Fjällräven is one of my favorite brands when it comes to outdoor gear (and I’m not talking about the Kånken, I don’t own one and I don’t plan to get one). Their jackets and hiking pants are great for its durability and functionality. :)

The side pocket is perfect for a folding umbrella.
The Kanken is fine functionally as a small bag, to store stuff like an iPad or a few lightweight items. I don't like how there's no padding at the bottom which means anything heavy falls to the bottom of the bag, which makes it more uncomfortable to use. I also wouldn't recommend it as a bookbag as even a few books just makes it difficult to carry.
The no padding at the bottom also means if you have an iPad or small laptop inside it has virtually no protection 🤷♂️ Thanks for sharing, Sam!

There is a simple solution! Buy a Yoga mat of choice, cut a rectangle or two and place it in the bottom of it. 🙂

Hi Levi! First of all, I love your content. But...
You have a point in the "it's an outdated design of backpack", but there's something really reallty nice in having a lot of space in the kanken backpack, i own a lot of fjallraven bags (some fron the kanken lineup, others from the vardag lineup) and what they have in common is that you aren't obligated to use the bags in a certain way, which is very helpful! I use my bags in soooo many different ways that i don't think i'm going to buy another one any time soon! And the great quality of the bags makes able that option, which is so much better than having a bulky backpack with pockets all over the place that could get broken anytime soon.
Anyway, i'm loving these videos, keep going with the good stuff!

In my opinion the Kanken is the *ideal* carry-on travel bag.
Its small so you're not tempted to overfill it and it always fits airplane luggage allowances (especially on some of the European budget airlines). Organise with a packing cube and use the front pocket to store documents when travelling.
Super durable and easily waterproofed.

If anyones in the market, I got the Kanken 17" laptop bag and love it! They added shoulder straps, the back laptop compartment, and made the side pockets (originally intended for umbrellas, that's why they are so small) big enough for a standard water bottle. I bring mine to work/ travel and love it's simple design. I'm someone who never used all the pockets and pouches in other backpacks so just letting me throw things in and go is great. Only thing I would change is making the front pocket a bit bigger on the 17" bag. Phones are bigger now and all that and the body of the bag is too big to just throw looser things like that in so I would have made it a few inches bigger but that's my only critique of it
What size is your laptop? I have a 15.6 inch laptop and I'm so torn between the 15 and 17 backpacks 😅 My laptop fits EXACTLY in the 15's laptop compartment but not sure if it would start to wear down on the corners of the backpack or not. On the other hand, the 17 is a bit larger as a whole and as I'm about 5 feet tall, it might look comically large on my back. How do you feel about the size? Did you test the 15 also or did you go straight for the 17?
@@laurakranich847 I absolutely love my 17 inch. I'm 5'3 and it is a bit comical but totally worth it. The laptop compartment is a godsend and I put my bits and bobs on top where my laptop is short. 17 inches also fits very well underneath airplane seats. Mine also has padded straps. The extra height is so handy.
I only have the kanken mini that I bought a couple years ago as an alternative to taking my big school backpack everywhere, it fits my essentials like wallet, key, phone, water bottle, bike repair kit and a couple other random things, I can usually also stuff a hoodie or a scarf into it as well. I usually carry around an additional totebag in it too just in case I end up going on a spontaneous grocery trip on my way home. Usually I don't even have to use it as I've become a master at playing micro backpack tetris, much to disbelief of the cashier and sometimes some people behind me in line. If you need a small everyday backpack that holds your basic shit, a hoodie and a 6 pack of beer, kanken mini is fucking amazing
If your a college student who is going to carry a lot of heavy things I don’t recommend unless you get both the shoulder straps AND the back foam peice or else it will hurt like hell. But frankly I think if your above ten pounds you going to have to carry something anyways. It’s also nice to carry around town because it looks less suspicious than carrying a jansport shopping so it can double as a purse. It’s a very mature looking backpack. Wish the side pockets were big enough to carry a water bottle and that there was a phone pocket in the small front pouch. The plus side is it’s cute and VERY durable you won’t be ripping this up any time soon.
I have had my kånken for 4 years and I take it everywhere. it's the most comfortable bag I tried and it's even big enough to pack for 2-3 week trips. bonus points - it's still completely intact and looks almost the same as when I bought it.

I can do a 4 day trip with it, especially using the top loops to hold a small pillow and thin blanket.
@@loveenduresallthings I have on me 3 tops + a heavier pair of pants then roll another 3 tops with another pair of pants or two, then fill in the gaps with underwear, tho I don't pack blankets or towels etc cause they are usually provided by hotels/airbnbs

The kanken might not be the most functional backpack ever, but damn are they durable! My fjäll räven loving dad regularly used his old one for over 25 years and it's still in a good condition. Don't know how their modern counter parts hold up though

I have a fjallraven I got in my freshman year of high school, and now I’m a junior in college. Still looks great and barely has any wear despite being used daily.
I never understood the obsession with these bags. I assumed it was just an aesthetic thing.

I have found this bag to be extremely useful for me. I rarely lose anything in this bag, thanks to the few pockets. Plus, it FORCES me to pack light. I am very thankful for the design and I love the color and feel.
I enjoy the perspective of the video... But I am the person who loves my kanken and also the functionality and durability of other Fjall Raven products! My kanken has been in my life for many years and is my everyday bag and my travel bag. It has been on almost every trip with me since the start. I love how simple it is and how it can fit into many uses. I have tried other bags for travel but none compare to my kanken. Perfect for me for a 2-6 day trip and everyday carry. I only need 1 bag in my life for all occasions. I do agree that fitting a water bottle in the side pocket could be helpful but I have found that it is perfect for quick access to my sunglasses and sunblock as well as a reusable shopping bag.
It's definitely not the best backbag available but having a durable and simple product as a fashion/desing icon might be good since these bags end in used market or are used for years. You might introduce new customers to the used market, or you might get them buying less disposable crap.
I think they make for decent city day backpacks. Personally I like that the fabric is thin enough to stitch patches onto it. One of the first things I did was to remove the label in front and put a big star trek emblem at the spot.
I wear their clothes daily, and they fit perfectly, are functional and last a very long time. The only disadvantage I see it that the G1000 fabric embedded ash from a fire like crazy, and you can’t really get the stains out as easily as from any other fabric, so it’s annoying to wear next to a fire.
I actually bought a Kånken after owning my Vidda pants for years and loving them. Found it and the mini one at a store on vacation on sale, and my wife has wanted one since highschool. She’s kinda artsy so it’s a part of her crowd. I bought both for us to match. Not sure I’ll get much use out of it, but it does seem durable and useful for a guy like me who doesn’t need many things while I’m out and about. I’ll love to give it to my son on his first day of school so he can use it as intended, and until then I’ll just use it to cart around his toys and sippy cups! Fjällräven makes good shit. I plan on getting one of their bigger bags to replace my worn out camping bag after my experience with their products.
I'm Swedish and born 1973. These were everywhere when I went to school in the 80ties. Also, love your book shelf (the metal sides with wooden shelves), those were also very common when I grew up! I had one in my childhood room.
I have the Kanken laptop no. 2 and Kanken mini, they are amazing everyday bags, travel, even hiking ❤ love them both.

as someone who was previously the demographic for this backpack (former swedish child here) I like many of my peers inherited one of these. And I think my family and a lot of others where I grew up in remote, northern sweden have this unspoken rule where if it still works, keep it. Had this backback for the past 20 odd years and its a little dirty, but perfectly fine. Thats one thing I wish people who now own a kånken would appreciate too. For me Fjällräven was always on a list of slow fashion, where you buy an expensive thing that does the job well and lasts a long time.
i dont know what that side pocket was meant for, but just as Pokemon was not around in 1978, this is also true concerning plastic bottled water here in Sweden (at least compared to today). Also even today there is no "standard" size/diameter for the typical 500ml water bottle we find in stores. And if there actually is a format standard bottle for non store bought water today, im pretty shure this was not the case at the Konken birth in '78.
My phone fits perfectly in the side pocket of the mini!
Durability is what attracted me to the Kånken. I don't drive and needed a backpack for work, day trips into the city and short hikes. I found canvas backpacks even hiking ones around the same price point wore out within 18 months of daily use. I started out with a mini but found I needed more space for work sometimes and upgraded to a normal Kånken. I still use my mini for most trips outside of work. I found the shoulder pads removed the discomfort I had with the straps.
I think people living in walkable urban places get the most use out of these. Here in Australia most large east coast towns, suburbs and cities have decent sidewalks and in places that don't there's usually enough space to walk along the side of the road or on the council owned 'nature strip' outside of people’s houses. Rural/suburban people are pretty fearless about walking on the side of the road here. Maybe they're not as popular/useful in North America because less people walk/catch public transport. Unless you’re disabled or elderly people here consider you lazy if you drive anywhere under 2 - 3 kilometres.
I also like that the bag makes me think about what I pack. A lot of back problems from backpacks don't go away with adulthood, I have permanent pain in my left shoulder blade from an overloaded school bag, that seems to be getting worse with age even though I'm now very careful about backpack weight.
I really like my Kanken, but I have the version for laptops. The handles allow me to carry the backpack when I am on a crowded bus or train, the square shape can easily fit on the bike share compartment, combining with the zipper opening both sides it’s easier to take a change of clothes when I go to the gym. The side pockets can fit my phone safely because it’s deep and the small pocket on the front will use for small stuff. The fact it’s a huge whole without any division can be good if you carry small organizers. Of course it’s fashionable but I researched a lot before buying it and I have no regrets. All depends of what you needs are.
I feel like the existence of so many kanken similars like the doughnut macaroon, day owl or the ultra fashionable anello clasp does justify the tote backpack style. If you love the style, but are a bit bigger as a person than a kid, or require different things, there's stuff out there that is just as good if you love that tote backpack functionality but desire, like, an actual backpack strap that won't immediately break or hurt your shoulders.
Yes. Initially, I was planning to buy Kanken for the looks of it. But then I started looking into it more and watched comparison videos against other bags and was very disappointed with how little to none compartment it has :( So I settled for Doughnut. Lots of compartment inside thenmain pocket, and the side pockets can actually fit my tumbler 😂
I love my Doughnut! I own the Fjallraven foldsack, but I needed more compartments. Glad I made the switch so far. Curious about their durability.
@@jekellhides Mine is on its 2nd year, and so far it’s still intact. I had to have zipper replacement though. But that’s on me as I try to fit everything in it so it ends up to bulky for the zipper to handle 😅

This was a really interesting take! I agree that the Kanken isn't a functional bag for the outdoors and that's a bit of an off-branch thing from Fjallraven. It's an urban bag that's super durable and practical. I love how I can just lay it on its back and have the front of it open to a 90 degree angle. I can get to everything I packed in the bottom without the endless rummaging through the bag (that usually just leaves a bigger mess if you're me). With all that said, I think it's literally the best backpack I've had for the lifestyle I'm using it for. And that lifestyle is different from what the brand deals with, yeah. But that doesn't mean that it's not a good backpack.
All that being said, I actually bought a Kanken for my back and honestly I needed this bag when I was a kid - it's done wonders for my back hunch that my childhood bags caused. If I ever had kids they'd definitely be getting a kanken. The fact that it was so randomly popular and seen as a trend was actually something that made me not want to buy it at first but I wanted a bag that would help my back and man it delivered. I thought I'd hate the straps too but once I put it on, it was more comfortable than any padded straps I've ever tried!
Do the thin straps cause discomfort when carrying heavy loads? Thinking of getting one as well if that's not an issue
@@jj-qq8dg It hasn't caused me discomfort but I haven't tried carrying anything heavier than a couple books and a water bottle in them. Also depends if you wear more or less than a t-shirt with it on I guess?
The Kanken is to backpacks what Hydroflask is to water bottles. Which is kind of ironic when you consider that a Hydroflask won't fit in the side pocket of a Kanken.
Here in the Netherlands we all use Dopper water bottles and they fit perfectly in the side pockets!
I have had mine for 10 years.
I have replaced the zipper at the store for free as well I had a tailor stitch padding on the straps.
Its been everywhere and in the washing machine multiple times.

It just depends on ones needs. I was pretty happy with my kanken, didn't need changes to it, I guess I don't carry so much stuff with me. But hype is annoying, yes. And I have a problem with fabric getting damaged and tearing after (just) 2 years of use...
I've seen these in Portland, and I always assumed people were finding them at thrift stores, because they look so quaintly old-fashioned. Still, as a 90s kid, you just can't beat a Jansport for nostalgia.
It is very durable, and also easy to bring with you. Small enough, and built well, made to be used 👍
It’s good as a small size alternative to a purse/handbag. It’s great for shopping, if you don’t need a lot for work, also as a personal item on planes ✈️
I got two Kanken’s back in 2013 for my son and I. Sadly they were lost in flooding but I got one for my daughter when she started preschool in 2019. It’s great for small school children. Now my son and I use Tom Bihn bags, way more organization. My daughter on the other hand will continue to use her Kanken when she starts 2nd grade this September.
I’m Danish and had my first kånken in 1982. I can’t remember how many I had over the years, but I usually wear them to litteral pieces. To day I’m an old lady so i’ve upgraded to one with a laptop compartment and padded straps.
I don't see how a company that has had an established reputation as a premier outdoor outfitter for forty years is going to get sidelined by the popularity of the Kanken. The company has had plenty of time for their original target market to come to know and trust their products and I can't see the outdoorsy types no longer buying those products just because the backpack has become so popular. They know who Fjallraven is. It seems like this is them taking advantage of a new market.
It's small, waterproof, lightweight, and looks nice. Yeah it's not an ideal choice for someone going for a hike, but it's a great option for a commuter/city bag especially if using public transport because it's light and doesn't take up much space. Also I don't necessarily want to look like a hiker when going to work etc--I can bring this bag anywhere and it won't look out of place, even in a professional setting. Not everyone is looking to optimize their life for practicality, style is also important.
I remember when a store in Vancouver started selling Fjällräven. I resented the brand because the store had previously sold Tatonka stuff, which I'd become a fan of, and now I couldn't get it locally. Seems like I slept on a good brand, though. I like gear that lasts.
It's all about priorities. Granted, I don't use a Kanken but another high quality backpack that comes with as few compartments as a Kanken. For me it's a small price to pay for a really durable backpack that, that I use everyday and for short trips and that won't break just because I stuff it with a weeks worth of groceries and a pumpkin (because I have to take everything home by bike). Especially for trips the lack of compartments turned out to be a positive aspect actually because I can neatly organize everything with packing cubes and save space.
So maybe having a hundred compartments isn't the top priority for Kanken users either. Who knows? I can see why some people would want a lightweight, relatively durable backpack, that comes in cute colors.
To me it’s like music hardware: the limitation is the point. I’ve lived though the days where I had a giant backpack and would just carry everything with me, which is heavy and unnecessary.
With my kanken I just pack whatever I specifically need and it there I go.
You never notice the weight of what you’re carrying until you unburden yourself.
I have my Kanken Laptop 15" for 5 year now, and extra padded straps make an impact. The laptop pocket is great for carrying documents and laptop of. I use it to go for a groceries and i can pack a lot and I do not feel how heavy it is. Sometimes I pack all clothes to laptop pocket for a weekend trip and i have whole main space to carry book or snacks. I can fit in that side pocket my umbrella and my water bottle or glasses. Yeah color changed but it its still in good condition after 5 years of heavy everyday use.
I've been using my Kanken for 5 years now, and I definetly agree with all your criticisms here. I enjoy the aesthetic of this backpack and it's alright for my needs as a student but it is farrr from perfect.
The straps can become quite uncomfortable when you're carrying a lot of stuff. They do sell additional strap covers for an extra price, which comes off as sleazy and money hungry to me when the standard bag itself sellfs for around 80$. The front and side pockets are okay but leave a lot to be desired in terms of room and flexibility. Even the material, while mostly waterproof, has left my lecture notes slightly damp on occsaion. Disappointing considering this company is meant to be an outdoor wear nature brand.
The main reason I still use this backpack is because it was so expensive and I wanna get my money;s worth. I've also littered the front of it with pin bages to it feels personal to me. I definetly fell for the hype with this one and personally it didn't live up to it.
My 12 year old has been begging me for one. I'm so glad I found this and will be having her sit to watch this as well after school. It doesn't seem like it would hold many books either 🤨Thanks for the info!
Hi all, just some information about Swedish pronunciation of the brand and its products, if you are interested.
The letter å makes the 'oh' sound. So Kånken is pronounced as Konken.
The letter ä makes the 'eh' sound. So Fjällräven is pronounced as Fe-el-raven

My bright coral Kanken is literally the bag I grab when I know I'm going to spend the day outside, walking around the city, especially if the weather is bad. It saves me from the neck pain I get from a crossbody bag, it's waterproof, and the side pocket is actually perfect for a compact umbrella and a bottle of iced tea. I can even use the handles to secure my parasol if it's going to be a sunny day.
I first discovered Fjallräven in Sweden because so many kids wear their outdoor gear (especially coats and hats). So I was confused when the backpack trend spread a couple years ago (until watched your video on it).
This video helps it all make sense to me now.

Ik heb deze rugzak 2 jaar gebruikt voor school( ik had de 17 inch laptop rugzak) . Deze rugzak had wel goede brede banden dus het dragen deed geen pijn maar voor een middelbare scholier vind ik deze boekentas net te klein . Mijn laptop ging wel in het laptopvak ik kon er zelfs nog een paar boeken bijstoppen. Het grote van was net te klein voor een zware dag op school niet alles ging erin. Ik moet letterlijk duwen om mijn brooddoos erin te krijgen. Ook 1 klein vakje aan de voorkant wat ik ook niet echt handig vond dus ik heb nu een eastpak besteld . fjallraven is echt een merk voor rugzakken als je een keer op reis gaat en dingen gaat bezoeken, naar de stad gaan , of korte tripjes niet voor elke dag te gebruiken .
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to find the perfect backpack as an every day carry. I hate too many compartments. I hate too much bulk. I hate anything that's too big and bulky. I appreciate the cons you've pointed out, but I'm definitely going to look into this.
Have a mate from work who buys a new Kanken pack every year. Either he wore it out or broke the zips. He said he keeps on buying because of the aesthetics. Reality is, unless you baby these packs and use them occasionally in very mild environment, these packs are not as durable and long lasting as people make it to be.
PS. If you want a really hard wearing, buy it for life pack, get a full grain veg tanned leather bag and condition it every now and then.
As a art student it's perfect. So many pens and brushes for the side pocket. I even have a water bottle that fits. I got the laptop version. Fits my laptop and it has padded straps. It's perfect and crazy durable. 🥰

I agree. The the Kånken backpack definetly has some limits, especially the straps. I would much rather recommend any Haglöfs backpack, as they have the same durability, and is much more comfortable to wear.
so, I defo bought my kanken in 2016 in Undergrad because it was in fact, on trend.
HOWEVER, it is still my go to bag today on days with and without my laptop (it goes in what used to be the cushion sleeve). the side pockets are bomb AND the body holds a six pack of beer + a water bottle on the base and whatever on top.
I see your point re it pulling in people who may not typically buy from this kind of brand, but I think that could even be a strength as it gets people to buy a properly made item as well as showing people that they can use this bag on their adventures.

Being able to hold a six pack of beer should be a minimum requirement for every backpack hahaha but you've made some solid points! To people talking about "durability ".... I guess it doesn't fall apart easily BUT the fabric gets easily scratched by literally anything. It even wears off (badly) when washing it with a gentle brush 🙃 After 1 month of use, mine looked like I've had it for 10 years lol I travel full time all around the world and I always see Kanken wearers with bags of all different colours looking super beaten up and that's funny considering we paid over $100 for it 😅
I actually love the my mini kanken. It fits so much more than you think because it opens almost fully. It's my main bag/purse and Ive had it since college which was 7 years ago. It's hand in crowded places too as I can use the top handles to move it in front of me for safety. The side pockets suck but none of my glasses have flopped out of it yet.

I kept seeing those backpacks in the subway, then checked the price and couldn't believe it. They are small, look really uncomfortable and offer nothing more than quality materials in an outdated design. The way I see it, you can get way more useful stuff in that price range.
Love kånken! Have had mine for only 5 years or so but it's a great backpack! My mom has had hers for at least 20 years and it still holds up! Imo anything Fjällräven is great quality, I especially love their outerwear :)

My partner and I have a Kånken each. I got mine in 2016 and still use it almost daily. I’ve tried switching things up and trying other backpacks but I returned or regifted all of them. Nothings feels right after Kånken. Here in Sweden they’re an everyday bag and nothing special. I travelled with it for years and have taken it for over 60 flights as my only luggage, gone on hikes and taken it to the office like every day. It’s perfect for weekend trips. Honestly, I’d pay double or triple the price for this backpack.
reasons why i didn't enjoy my kanken from 2016 (still loved it tho)
- i carry so much crap for school that when it gets heavy, it looks like a box, and idk if it's been updated since but the straps always hurt so bad.
- because i carry so much crap, one front pocket is not enough pockets for me.
- the pocket for the laptop was not well protected. every time i put my bag down no matter how gently i did it it felt like i was slamming my laptop every time.
if you're planning on getting this bag for school, don't. unless you have minimal supplies/textbooks, you'll find better luck with a different brand (yes, art kids, you included). but if you just want a cute, durable bag to just do daily life things or carry a few books here and there then go for it. i love the look of it but I just wish they upgraded it a little more. definitely not for school though.

The Kanken 2 is just amazing buddy.. You may say your stories but its so comfortable and practical it works amazingly well.. It sells because its good..

This is a pretty interesting side of Fjallraven. I have two pairs of their Abisko Trekking Tights that are super nice for both biking and backpacking, but the history and impact of the Kanken Backpack is a perspective I've not known much about until now 🎒🙄

I have had a Kånken No. 2 since 2016 that I paired with their camera insert and it's an awesome "just right" size camera bag. Also, the shape is neat and square and packs super easy. I had thought that when I made drastic changes to the size of my kit that it would be way too small, but a little rejiggering solved that. Of course, I do agree that the stock straps are way too harsh and I got the snap on pads. Overall though, it's great and if it doesn't fit in the Kånken, I probably don't need it.
when i had a baby i bought a secondhand kånken as a diaper bag because let's be honest, most designated diaper bags are ugly. now i use it for work (i'm a teacher), quick groceries, day pack, luggage etc. i did, however, get the padding for the shoulder straps because i hate hate hate thin straps. the only thing i'm mad about it is the "bottle" compartment that definitely doesn't fit a water bottle.

My daughter use it for 4 years as a school backpack. She got another two backpacks of another famous brands since that time, but still she prefers her kanken.
Having recently graduated from a large, research university, these things are everywhere! It’s as though every girl wants match every other girl with these things.
Himawari makes a similar square backpack with a laptop pouch, padded straps, and larger side pockets. It also comes in larger sizes (for cheaper)
I got the bucket opening Himawari that fits my 15" laptop comfortably instead though
Why the kånken is awesome:
* The box shape makes it fit a lot more than other backpacks of similar size (you usually have to go up 2-3 sizes)
* Top straps can fit a jacket and makes it easy to carry with one hand
* Sidepockets can fit most aluminum bottles, 50cl bottles, aluminum cans or a small umbrella
* looks clean so can be brought to the office
* Lasts forever (2 friends of mine inherited their parents kånkens)
* Smaller items can be put in a small bag/dopkit inside the big compartment
But yeah, while it's a great work/school bag I wouldn't take it hiking.
I always found it unpleasant to wear due to the straps, but my mom loves it (she is now ~65). I suggested buying her a new version with better straps, but she refused.
However the simple room gives a lot of space... my friend carried ~24 cans of beer.
The side pockets are usefull for rulers (school kids is the target).
