One of the best sci-fi movies. Period.
yeyp
And series
With one of the best series.
Yep
I couldn't agree more.
A true classic.
A shame that most people don't know of it and others think it came after the TV Show.
I've literally never met anyone that thinks SG-1 came before the Movie.
Oh Yeah babe !
Me, as the most of the people, dont care about stupid americans movies. We preffer movies from real life.
No one thinks it came after the show.
@@Fuhrer176 you'd be surprised
I absolutely enjoyed this movie. It was far superior than most Sci-Fi movies of its time. It still holds up as a Classic Movie as well.
they plausibly did the best job tying history and functional distant location.
Realized over closely thirty years before....and its so seemed so actually...its not a casualtie! There is a deepest message!
It annoys me to no end - how it's obvious that they know there's seven symbols. They know the first 6 symbols. Why on earth contact Jackson? There's a very finite number of symbols on that gate - just try them one after the other?!
Maybe npt of it´s time but of the ty
The trailer explicitly described it as a blend of Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Who could resist a pitch like that?
That battle during the 7-minute count down to atomic destruction was the LONGEST 7 minutes you'll ever experience in any movie, anywhere, at any time. And you loved every heart-pounding second of it.
@EldorfThe_Wise The expeditionary team, hopelesly far from home, out smarting and eventually killing a god.
It's not nearly as long as the 5 minutes it took for planet namek to explode
“I’ve got an idea.”
I fell in love both with James Spader & Kurt Russell in this gr8t movie...
Good movie . One of the very best sci-fi series ever made .
Gefilta Fish. Love your name!!
I went to see this at the cinema. The journey through the stargate into space was amazing on the big screen - fantastic movie. They should do a sequel...
Or a TV Series ;)
@@l00k4tstuff no... the tv series was crap
@@Thetruuuuuth Oh? I am very curious why you think that. Was it the difference in tone? Did it go in a direction you didn't like or weren't keen on? I am actually very curious. Most people simply do not care for the show/s but crap is a stronger word for it.
@@grumbeard it just seemed low budget with hammy acting and weak storylines...
@@Thetruuuuuth First season was indeed not so great so if you based it on that you are pretty correct. Funny you mention the hammy acting. It had just the right combiantion of a show knowing it is a show and seriousness. At least that's what I always thought. It had good episodes, it had bad episodes but overall after the 1e season the quality was actually pretty good. The lore is actually pretty fun. It got a lot better every single season with a climax at the end of season 7. I did not really care that much for the later seasons. It actually looked pretty good for a series from the late 90s to the early 2000's. Mostly on par with seasons of star trek and better than Babylon 5.
All in all to each his own. But I agree with the movie, it was and still is a masterpiece. Just recently I would have said not to making a sequal. Most sequals of beloved franchises have proven to be shitshows. However they really nailed Topgun 2 with Maverik. It made me have a lot of hope. So, maybe?
Awesome movie. And it was turned into an awesome series. One of the best ever!
I thought it was boring 😴
@@retroguy9233 You should watch it again.
is he robert california?
3 series actually ... now if amazon would just get the new casts they need and get the bridge episodes started we all could be happy
Quite amazing that a movie from the 90s puts all todays movies to shame
much better than 95% of today movies
99% .. most of what we are getting today are remakes of the 60's and 70's movies ... nothing actually Original anymore ... even Avengers was from a comic not an original idea really
1:05 In the movie and every series, when the gate room is evacuated...that door is *ALWAYS* almost closed when the last 2-3 people get through.
It's like the person in charge of that switch is constantly trying to trap the last ones inside.
"Curses, I'll get you next time. Next time."
As everybody throughout the annals of US military history is perfectly aware of, this is 100% serious business for 100% of the time and nobody has ever played a prank while in uniform...
Excellent movie Kurt Russell is a cinematic legend one of the finest actors of our time
tbh I much prefer RDA as Jack ... curt was too wishy washy as a military guy
@@kaboom-zf2bl
Strange - I thought RDA was too wishy washy as a military guy.
@@atticstattic he more accurately portrays a large range of commanders in the army ... while the movie version was just another ripken escapes some place ...
This is one of my favorites sci fi movie ever.
OMG I haven't seen this movie in years! One of the BEST!
One of the best movies ever made of the science fiction genre
The amount of realistic tech as compared to CGI. 90s movie rocks!
yeah I agree CGI may be good ... but as for quality actual scenery is always BETTER ... look at some of the startrek fan films where they green screen the scenes .. they didnt even get the sizes right NOR distance ... and it makes the whole series crap ...
In most cases, I HATE seeing actor changes between movies or TV shows. But SG is one of the few cases where it's done well.
Russell and Spader do an excellent job with the characters at this point in their development and then Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks are perfect for developing both characters during the show.
They are two different characters with the Jack O'Neil and Jack O'Neill line from Stargate SG-1 about how RDA and Russell are different people. To reference someone else's comment on the matter, basically it was part of RDA's agreement (since he was being brought on as actor AND producer) was that he didn't want to play "movie" o'neil. he didn't think he could do "depressed" o'neil for 2+ years (SG-1 would eventually get greenlit for a 2 years). RDA wanted him to be more funny/sarcastic.
@@Drraagh oh yeah I think he referenced that but at the same time Skarra seemed to think they were the same person
@@melissaspreitzer1428 I'd have to check out the scene, but first thing that springs to mind is the 'racist' bit of 'All foreigners looking the same' and then add the similar name, so someone he saw briefly and then hadn't seen for however long, is now connecting with a similarly named person. Just off the cuff thoughts.
Well, to be fair, movie O'Neill was in a bad place. You get glimpses of a lighter, more optimistic Jack at the end of the movie that you can see evolve into TV O'Neill.
And once or twice RDA did a fair Kurt Russell impression by bringing an enraged movie O'Neill back into view, notably in "Red Sky".
More than anything else, the pencil dropping out of the guy's mouth was the most memorable, lol...
In awe of the toilet of the gods
When I saw the show blacklist I never knew he was the same guy that played in the stargate movie he's seems like two completely different people to me from back then to now. From his voice change to having no hair and I never paid attention to the actors real name as well back then.
Rrrrrrrrroberrt Califorrrrrrrrnia!
That’s what smoking does to your voice.
Well sometimes…
Pffft, thats Alan Shore.
He also is the voice of Ultron for Marvel.
Check out Spader in Mannequin - you won’t believe it’s him
Some really good special effects for 1994.
I was very impressed with this movie.probably my favorite Sci fi.good acting great story very well made.
One thing that always seemed weird to me: there are 39 symbols. They knew the first 6 of the combination, which left 33 symbols as the potential seventh. Why did they need Daniel to figure it out? Wouldn't simple trial and error have done the trick?
Yeah, considering the gate clearly reacts when you reach a correct symbol, it always seemed a bit stupid to me as well. :P
@@user-lz5vh9bb5w It was not reacting to the symbols that were chosen but as each correct symbol was input the gate would draw more and more power which is what caused it to vibrate so badly. According to the Stargate Wiki page: With 38 symbols, the Stargate network in the Milky Way has 1,987,690,320 possible addresses that can be dialed (this does not include the glyph for the Point of Origin).
@@DevJannz yes, but they know the first 6 in this case, not the point of origin
That number is how many options there are for the first 6.
@@jamesahibbard What Steve says is that any 6 symbols will have this effect. Saying that "This is as far as we've gotten" could simply mean that the gate always vibrates when the 6th cevron is locked. But the six symbols likely do not constitute a valid adress, that's why random-dialing the 7th chevron is ineffective.
They didn’t know they needed a 7th symbol (Dr Jackson figured that out). The sequence they had was only 6 symbols and every time they added a symbol the power drawn would increase hence the shaking. They thought either the sequence was wrong or something else. There are nine total chevrons on the gate so doing random guesses would take forever as there are billions of combinations.
This movie is so good. And the TV series was pretty darn good also
Well...long tiome ago..... whow.... all
time specail ! One of the best !
I went to see it in the theater. It was an awesome movie, loved it. Plus i went with my friend and we both loved everything Egypt so it was fantastic seeing pyramids.
Love the movie.... loved the entire series including atlantis....
Absolutely loved this movie.
So much truth!!! Best documentary ever!!!
It was an awesome, couldnt believe it when they created the movie, it didnt disappoint.
This scene always gave me shivers.
wonderful soundtrack
One thing I just thought about watching the flashback part of this clip: When they found the stargate in Egypt, how did they know it needed to be upright? Or how did they know it COULD stand upright? If it was lying flat on the ground, wouldn't you assume that was how it was meant to be?
I'd like to see another movie explaining how they figured out as much as they did before Jackson joined them.
Like with any other project. You show to the audiance succesfull results not the line of failed tries to get to it. You see the working procedure, which came out of months work. ;-)
And now we have CERN...
perhaps their idea was to get it up right so they could roll it to move it?
I won’t say much more than in the TV show that followed it is shown in an episode that the gate had been activated once before this movie took place chronologically
Never knew that James Spader was such a beautiful young man!
This was an awesome concept, completely open world.
The best scene is still when he sees the constellations in the newspaper and has the "AH HA!!" moment.
I watch this movie every chance I can. I've got to get the DVD of it.
I remember very well when this movie first came out, and as cool as it was, I'm telling you NOBODY knew it was about to be eclipsed by a spin off TV series that would go for several years, then itself spin off into two more equally good series. We just thought it was a really cool idea and also Kurt Russel fighting ancient slavemaster aliens that built the pyramids, lol.
I'm a retired school librarian. I showed kids (elem) "Ol' Yeller" with Kurt Russell, based on the book. (Did a lot of that to lure kids into good books.)
They had a hard time believing he was the same actor who later did "The Thing" and a bunch of other movies!
"ACTING!"
My all time favourite movie 😊
To be the guy that finds the final step, that feels pretty damn good.
Saw the movie in VHS, followed its various TV series, but this is the FIRST time I've seen the trailer. :)
Ahead of its time...
Great movie!
I remember that part the moment Stargate wakes up for the first time and the gate opens this is the moment that started it all.
i remember after watching this and then finding out about the (then) upcoming series i was like "how can they possibly make a series out of this the main bad guy is dead"
@Linda Scott that seems obvious now but you have to remember that at the time the stargate *only went to Abydos* and there was no mention of other goa'uld
2:39. On the hill in the background, you can see Indiana Jones is busy using the medal on a yardstick in the Well of Souls.
I love Stargate its the best movie ever made I love Star gate SG 1and Stargate Atlantis and Stargate universe and Stargate origins and Stargate infinite they are the best sci-fi show out there I love sci-fi action and adventure
great movie and a lovely james spader...
There was no way the TV show could’ve cast someone able to take over Spade’s character.
The simple reason I could never really get into the series. James and Kurt wer just too damned good.
@@OldGeezer55no James and Michael played Daniel great there was not much difference but they could not have had Kurt playing Jack in the show cause Kurt played it too serious while RDA was great serious when needed but funny at times

That line kills me every time.
0:33 that bending panel always cheers me up
Happy to have seen it as a premiere!
Activating a Stargate after Thousands of years was amazing and terrifying too. Imagine doing that in real life, I cannot even imagine that being as cool and the movie or TV Show.
That "watery" interface between our world and the Stargate, brilliant decision on someone's part.
The presence of water in a story, going back millenia, is often a crucial point and indicates a vital change in a character. Don't know if they knew that, but that's one reason it works here.
Still a great movie.
3:50 I never thought of it before but it made zero sense for them to raise an ancient artefact like that.
I never thought about that either but since rewatching this clip a few times there’s no way just pulling it up as they are should even work.
There should be some sorta framework to prop up the gate but nope they do it with rope because of “space magic”
@@MrAmazingJeff why do it at all? It seems an unnecessary risk to the artefact.
@@insertoyouroemail Well yeah that is true but even back in the 20s they'd surely be able to tell it's made of something super dense and thus durable as they eventually know in the future
Um clássico de ficção! Adoro esse filme!!!
James Spader is a wonderfully versatile actor Daniel Jackson and Red Redmond.
That is a great movie. Period
Interesting that the original Stargate movie the stargate connects to the kalium galaxy which is on the other side of the observable universe.
But in the TV series the Stargate connects to a network of other Stargates limited to the Milky Way galaxy and later the Pegasus galaxy which is nearby.
So many things they had to retcon to make a show workable, like how Ra wasn't even a snake--looked like the Asgard lol
Spader...jeez he's great! I loved him in this and "Blacklist" is one of the best shows ever televised. He was handsome beyond compare then and now he's a mature handsome a man can only aspire to. This movie had the best special effects at the time. Kurt RULED as the commander. James stole the show.
@Linda ScottCan't agree with you more! Watching him deliver a closing was like hearing a brilliant symphony of speech.
And the voice of Ultron, in Avengers.
For those who didn’t watch the movie they didn’t know they needed a 7th symbol (Dr Jackson figured that out). The sequence they had was only 6 symbols and every time they added a symbol the power drawn would increase hence the shaking. They thought either the sequence was wrong or something else. There are nine total chevrons on the gate so doing random guesses would take forever as there are billions of combinations.
Thought the 39 symbols (glyphs) and not the chevrons were the reason reason for the billions of combinations.
The dialing computer seems to know it needs 7 chevrons to dial a gate because when the 7th chevron was locked, all 7 chevrons flashed to indicate a successful connection has been made. I still don’t get this part. How the software programmer knows the gate need 7 chevrons.
@@estellemelodimitchell8259 You have to see the movie to understand this. It's because of Dr. Jackson findings after spending a couple of weeks locked in a room with all the hieroglyphs that were found buried with the Stargate that he was able to discover that there was an additional symbol that needed to be introduced in the sequence. Prior to that they didn't know that there was a need for a seventh symbol to open the gate. Besides that there is also the cost involved to operate such a program each time they tried and before the arrival of Dr. Jackson they weren't too successful so they were about to give up.
This was when Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich were good.
To be fair, a lot of their movies really look great on the big screen! The plots my be dumb sometimes, but they look really cool!
Nah, they were always hacks, this is just the least hacky thing they worked on.
@@jnnx I won't disagree. I did like Midway and was surprised they did that.
Me that I'm crazy for the science fiction movies so I've always loved them all the times when I see a movie's trailer too, I have feelings to live in the story of that moment. You see that what can do the cinema's magic. 😮😮😮🎥🎥🎥🎥🎞️🎞️🎞️🎞️🎞️🎞️🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬
Bonjour. Comme j'ai pu aimé ce film. Je l aime toujours. Et James Spader était tellement beau. À tomber. Bisous
Awesome !
I believe the entire process was meant to be able to open a Stargate to a small, regional paper supply distributor in Pennsylvania
So that Robert California can apply for the Regional Manager position only to change his mind and become CEO instead?

I watched this movie after seeing episodes of SG-1 on the telly, and I wondered where Jack, Sam and Teal'c were
the movie waa beyond it time the actors and set was azaming
Let the adventure begin.
My all time favourite movie❤
Great visuals and a plot that.... Great visuals anyway.
Where's that lovely sound I like when the wormhole forms? It's missing here!
It takes me a lot of effort to see the same actor as Mr Reddington.
Hair has such a strong influence on a face.
It's amazing to me how much the Daniel Jacksons (James Spader in the movie, Michael Shanks on TV) look alike. I wonder if it was planned or just happened.
He was cast, obviously it was planned.
He may have looked somewhat similar to Spader, but he was not Spader's natural casual intensity. He just had a way of looking and gesturing. He uses that in "The Blacklist" Just the way he cocks his head when making a statement. James is one of a kind.
@Linda Scott No, actually he was cast because of a resemblance between the two.
@Linda Scott I found neither Jackson better than the other (if that's what you meant by 'hw'?)... They are the best at their character for the shows they are in. Spader is a little more 'spacey,' 'I-often-can't-get-out-of-my-own-way' juxtaposed to Russell's 'by the book' super military serious attitude....in the series, Shanks is the more 'by the book' science guy up against Dean's career military, often irreverent and mischievous character. I found both equal perfection....also, i did have a running disagreement with my H for a few years as to if the movie DJ was the same as the series...I coulda swore they were, LOL. Then I saw Spader in 'Secretary' and realized my mistake :o :)
Great movie
Emmerich/Devlin at their best. (Before they forgot that film should tell a story, not just dazzle the senses,)
It is unbelievable that the same team that brought us Stargate , also subjected us to Moonfall. (Of course that's not QUITE true. Dean wisely took a ship for the coast before Roland knocked Starship Moon out of the sky.)
This movie was pretty dumb, too.
@@jnnx Absolutely. That is the definition of a popcorn flick.
Dean Devlin understands the distinction between a mindless popcorn muncher, and schlock. Roland Emmerich without him, not so much.
At least this movie tried to tell a story, even if it was a sort of Lawrence of Arabia in Space. The same can't be said about other Roland Emmerich movies, they only tell of a disaster, and almost nothing before or after it.
I loved it! Fantastic!
oh daniel jackson is so smart, he figured out the last symbol!!!1!
there's 36 symbols on the gate.. fucking try them all
Raymond Reddington was always the smart one.
I remember when we saw the first scenes of Star Gate, back in the 90s.
Lol wrote above statement before the trailer fell here lol...
Poderia voltar como uma série ou um remake. cutia muito
A truly great movie!
The tunnel is so satisfying versus the show. Which is fine, because it has a movie budget. You just want to touch it.

plot description error. Russel's character, Col. Jack O'Neil is not retired, he's active duty and he's not Army. he's Air Force.
James FF'in Spader!
Activation of a trailer was even more exciting than activation of a stargate.
can you imagine the disappointment on a young man's face when he realizes that life is not like this movie and that things don't always work out that easily....then the get mad and shoot others.
