  • Well what started out as a tweak of a former project turned into a complete restyle! It goes a long way to show how important prep work is to every project. Liked using a gel stain but on the fence when it comes to a wipe on poly. I will say if you have problems with bubbles forming in your topcoat then this is the way for you to go. It dries fast enough but if you tire of repeated coats (more than 3) than this may not be the product for you...or me for that matter. Thanks for checking out the Asking Spot with Margie 😉

Loved the blue version but the black looked rather classy!

How frustrating! However you should be able to give a relatively light sanding to remove the poly and then reapply the stain. Haven’t used that brand but it may have been an issue of not enough time between stain layers. It could also be that the stain pooled a bit in places (meaning it needed to be wiped off more and reapplied to darken if needed). Give the stain extra time to soak in and dry. If the wipe on messes it up again you may want to gently brush it on rather than wiping. Good luck and thanks for watching!

I did more research. A wipe-on poly has mineral spirits in it. Mineral spirits can take paint off and gel stains are prone to leaving lots of pigment on the surface. So your options are to brush on a coat of polyurethane (from a can) first then use the wipe on. Another tip is when you are sanding to prepare for stain do not to a higher grit than 120. (Go up to 220 when you want to paint the surface.) You want to leave groves where the stain can better imbed.
