After Hurricane Milton my Sarasota home

Here is a tour of some of the devastation at our home, but it’s just the outside and we feel so fortunate to have survived just 7 miles away from where the storm came ashore on Siesta Key as well as we did. We evacuated so when this was all happening this destruction, we thankfully weren’t here to witness it. Cleaning up will be hard work, but I’ll do feeling so relieved because it could’ve bee...
Refinishing a metal patio side table

How I refinished a patio table Yikes! I almost forgot the final piece in the commission work I received. Thankfully, the folks who commissioned me were very understanding that it was incredibly hot, and they didn’t mind waiting to get it back. This little table was once again not a very scientific trial, but I did get to test if using a strong blast from the hose and a metal scraper brush was a...
Upcycle Magnets with Clay, AIR DRY or POLYMER?!?

Air dry clay or “oven cooked” polymer clay, which one’s better? To be honest, they both have their points for being better than the other, but mainly it depends on the project you’re about to do, how you would like to finish them and your time. In my opinion: air dry clay is easy to work with in that it doesn’t require a lot of strength to flatten it or roll it out. However, it cracks easily bu...
Patio bench MAKEOVER using strippers!
Переглядів 1082 місяці тому
This paint chipped patio bench was supposed to be easy! Arrg, far from it. I will say it gave me a new appreciation for chemical strippers. However, as much as I like my low odor paint strippers the idea of reapplying multiple times and having to re-wrap them in plastic so the stripper wouldn’t dry out seemed a bit much. It occurred to me that perhaps applying the low odor one on once and leavi...

This #patiofurniturechallenge was supposed to be fun! While I'm looking forward to seeing what my fellow UA-camrs do with it, my entry was anything but fun. In a future video I will show the failed attempts to use chemical strippers but in this video the focus is on a sand blaster. It was a failure but I can't say it was complete rubbish. Fun Easy Makeover for a Plant Stand curb find!
Hi, Someone recently gave me a whitewash wicker hamper, very sturdy and in excellent condition. I would like it to be a similar color to your basket. Do you think the Polyshades would work for this application? I would probably want to do the inside and outside. Does this product seal the color so there would be no color bleed into clothing in the hamper? Thanks.
@@cubarnett the poly part of poly shades should be what makes it not bleed. Takes a while to dry. Test the bottom of the piece first. Of course not being able to see what you are working with I can’t be certain but my guess is it should work.
How long do I have to let it dry for afterwards?
@@blumonkey238 it dries very quickly minutes
@ thank you! So if I use it on my kitchen table I can use it safety even after minutes?
😂

What an awesome update! The fabric inside is lovely.
@@whatheatherdid9615 thank you Heather! I was tempted to leave a door off as I am so pleased with that fabric 🤭
Use this all the time in my cleaning business. Last year i did some outdoor wood rockers. They did great this year!
@@tigq1430 it is a remarkable product!
This made me smile over your editing inserts!
Thank you I tried to keep it fun
I lived by my different sized scrapers when I restored pieces. More physical work than using a sander, sure, but I enjoy a lack of both sound and residual arm vibration a whole lot lol. What a lovely transformation, Margie! Dark tones are my jam right now and I love that inside fabric. So glad you are all okay!
@@CopperCactusDIY I miss seeing your work! That fabric was on clearance at JoAnn’s, I love it
@@AskingSpot aw, thanks for saying that. I'll be back sooner or later... anxiously awaiting workshop space! In the meantime, clearly need to hit up JoAnn!
So glad it's only a bit of stuff and that you and yours are safe.
I sanded my piece. Will it work?
I don’t think so…you might want to take a picture of your piece and show someone at your local hardware store and see what they think.
Hello Margie: What do you and others recommend as a top coat when done. Like a water proof Gloss, semi or satin (poly something?) I did a poly? 40 years ago and don't know what will protect the top without wrecking the repair. TX in advance all.
I’m not an expert but here is my theory: To narrow the choices down, an oil based polyurethane tends to yellow overtime. Which can be a nice “antique” or aged compliment to a lot of pieces. Water based polyurethane/polyacrylic goes on milky white but dries clear. (It is my preferred choice.) However, if it is a piece for outside, spar urethane is the only way to go. As for the shine, well Gloss isn’t as popular as it once was, especially with poly topcoats as it makes things look plastic (IMO). Satin (my fav) is mildly reflective and is on the fringe of being popular again and tends to be the middle of the road option. I believe it gives the best appearance of being like a classic shellac topcoat. Then there is Flat/Matte topcoat which I have used a lot, too. It is the current popular finish for pieces you want to look as though they are left natural. Always remember not to put a water based top coat on top of an oil base (supposedly possible after it cures for ages but even then I don’t trust it.) But you can put the same base (oil or water) on top of itself after a light sand. So if you put a matte down and wanted it more reflective, try a satin. Note, it is easy to step from matte to satin or gloss than it is to go from gloss to satin or matte. Hope that helps!
I really love it, and I so appreciate you working during the Hurricane and aftermath. Also, thank you for the donation links, no the Res Cross & Humane Society. I really love your piece and would be thrilled to have it on my “library.” Stay safe! ❤
Thank you for your kind words and support, I appreciate it!
Margie, that is SO pretty!! I love the decoupage pattern & it goes so well with the dark look. Love it!🤩
@@OwlingDogDesign oh coming from you that is a high compliment! I love your pattern selections 😉

I like that!! Love the dark academia look. The material really looks so lovely in there. That was a hard look to go for, I am sitting here myself and wondering if I could tackle that one, hmmmmmm nope! It is a beautiful piece!
@@diysbydar Thank you! You know now I like the inside so much I’m reluctant to close the door 😄
I loveeee it Margie!! The blue paint wash pulls through giving it almost a iridescent appearance!! Similar to a black oyster shell! Very very cool!! Im so glad you are safe! Great job on this piece!
@@thekraftycreech aw, thank you Krystal you are the best! Oo if I had purple or green I could really go for that iridescent look🤔
@AskingSpot oooohhhh maybe!!! That would be soooo cool!!! Its worth a try!!
Wow! It looks fabulous!!
Would this work on a dining table with veneer finish?
@@gerardbao I couldn’t say for sure but as a guess, if you are trying to make a scratch less noticeable and you tested the current finish to see if it is a lacquer or shellac topcoat, it should. Always test in an inconspicuous spot. To be safer you could take a picture of the piece and show it to someone who works in a hardware store and knows the products as well as your piece.
Oh dear...glad you're ok 🧡
Hello ! Hope you are well. Sorry to bother you , just a small question if I have a walnut sideboard, can I use mohagany restore a finish upon it to create a more red tone look or this will destroy the original color? Thank you ❤
That’s not recommended by the company because basically what it’s doing is it’s briefly making what was on a piece wet again. So if you try to change the tint using it, you may get an uneven finish.
I love this product. It works wonders covering scratches.❤
What can I use for Top coat with this product? I have two antique dressers of the golden oak era 1890s. They were finished with shellac or lacquer so this product would work. Can I apply an oil afterwards to recondition the wood like tongue, oil or danish oil and and then apply a wax topcoat?
@@gailbancer1571 according to the company: There is no need to put another finish on top, just Feed-N-Wax to help protect and maintain the newly restored finish. (My guess, can’t be certain, is the oils would be fine and generally speaking a wax can go on top of anything but nothing can go on top of a wax.)
Glad you remained safe. Bless you 💞
Jeeze oh petes!! That is some STRONG wind right there!
We are so glad we weren't here for it. Even though the house is fine and only had a power blink, the sound of all those things crashing around would have given us a heart attack!
@AskingSpot i completely agree!! Just the thought of what could have happend too!

Looking good!
My aunt also lives in Sarasota and had similar damage. Thankful it wasn't worse, considering how close landfall was. I'm in Charleston SC and know first-hand that storm clean-up is no fun. Good to know you're safe!
Weirdly this is the most pleasant post hurricane weather we have had to cleanup in (used to live in Louisiana). Doesn’t get sickening hot until 2 ish. Happy for your aunt! Our daughter’s friend lives on Siesta Key (off Midnight Pass the main road) and they said they only lost their fence while with Helene their ground floor got flooded. Direct hits are strange.
So glad you and your family are safe, definitely was thinking about you all when the storm hit. Well, we know what you will be doing for the next few weeks.
@@diysbydar Thank you! It has been exhausting
Glad you guys are safe.
Ooooh, wow! Big mess clean up there. 🤥
Polycrylic is a brand name of the Minwax company. It's polyurethane.
True however Polyacrylic is a high-molecular-weight composite of acryl and polyacrylamide, usually derived from a polyacrylamide gel. Generally speaking Polyacrylic is always water based Polyurethane is either water or oil based but more often thought of as oil based.
@@AskingSpot Thanks for the clarification. I thought they were both water-based.
Great video!
Thank you!🎉❤

Kitchen cabinets 50s someone splattered grease and I cannot clean it., It won't come out., what should i do?
Sorry to hear that happened. I am not an expert by any means and would refer you to your local hardware store as they will be better able to help you. You might want to bring a cabinet door/drawer with you so they can see what you are dealing with, good luck.
@@AskingSpot um, home depot?
Touch up on poly, you can get stain markers or waxes that will fill in the dings.
@@kimwaltz6114 on the piece I was trying to work on those methods did not work that great. I have a future video that showed my experience.
Beautiful job Margie. I am sure the customer is over the moon with all rhe pieces. The only other thing I can think of to do in getting extremely heavy loaded up paint and rust, is take it for a chemical acid dip. It probably costs a bit, but you sanity and knuckles are well worth it. Question, are you buying another water blaster?
@@diysbydar I don’t work with metal often enough to warrant it 🤔
Seal it with wax free shellac,. Adding a second coat of stain will only activate the first coat of stain. Shellac then wait 20 minutes, varnish.
