Bread brought the working-class Catholic Boswell family of Liverpool to hilarious life for 59 episodes between 1986 and 1991. Centered around matriarch Nellie Boswell, played to perfection by Jean Boht, the show depicted the antics of her troublemaking husband Freddie, ever-scheming adult sons Joey, Jack, and Adrian, fashion model daughter Aveline, and their larger-than-life extended family.
We lost the amazing Jean Boht herself this September 2022 at age 91. Boht's iconic character anchored the show with her stern mothering, sharp wit, and concealed golden heart. Her strained relationship with philandering husband Freddie, played by Ronald Forfar, provided endless comedy fodder. Forfar, who passed away in 2020, endowed Freddie with eternal charm and boyish defiance of his wife's wrath. Yet underneath the dysfunction lay a bedrock of love.
