  • Elladan and Elrohir were the twin sons of Elrond and Celebrían, and from Rivendell to the very Black Gate of Mordor, they went forth side-by-side. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on these brothers in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Loved to see a video regarding such overlooked characters, even though they aided in saving both Gondor and Middle-Earth.
It's a shame that they didn't get the chance to appear in the movie trilogy, and neither did Aragorn's fellow Dunedain.

Elrond's sons make up just one of the many fascinating, potential stories in the Legendarium that tolkien simply never had the opportunity to flesh out in his lifetime. This being so, we can only speculate about them.
I may have posted this before, but I also suspect that they went West with their grandfather, and that the text suggests this: it is said, after all, that it was by the efforts of MEN that the last Orcs and Dragons were be done away with, and that suggests that they indeed left the last of this task to their human heirs, and moved on. And just as valid, I now realize, is your point about their wanting to go see their mother again after going to such pains both to rescue and to avenge her: it makes perfect sense.
I did consider that they might have parted from each other, with only one going West, in an echo of Elrond and Elros themselves. But that carries its own contradictions, especially with regard to their mother seeing them again (losing Arwen would have been hard enough for her), so I find it less likely.

    "Remember today little brother."
Couple of the most discreetly awesome characters. Always wondered how their relationship with their sister was; were they loving or annoying like normal brothers? Lol
We may not officially know what happened to them in the end but I'd like to think that they followed their father's/uncles example where one went into the undying lands and the other stayed to help the world of men.
A short series following their travels would b subtlety epic:)

Even though there’s no evidence for it, I choose to believe they were Middle Earth’s version of the Weasley twins; mischievous jokers who never had more fun than when finding ways to cause havoc for everyone else around them but fiercely determined and loyal to each other and their family right to the end.
So many elves fit the stereotype of being serious, dignified resplendent figures, whether arrogant or noble, that the idea of these two causing Elrond many headaches over the years is so amusing that I desperately want to believe it’s true. 😂

Two brothers born in the Third Age, and we get little information about their lives. I believe they would make a choice like their forebears, one would sail west and the other stay in Middle Earth. The last twin would be a valuable asset to Men and elves in the Fourth Age. With both being 3000 years old, no record of children is recorded in the legendarium.

Tbh, I always forgot about the two, due to the limited lore around them, with the LOTRO game serving to have recently helped me to remember they existed and come to better appreciate them. My most reading-through of LotR afterwards was really enriched further by remembering this set of twins. They seem to have been inspired to some extent by Castor and Pollux from Greek Mythology. I must confess that talk of brothers fighting together against the darkness makes me think of my brothers and I, including my brother who has already 'gone west' so to speak, so this video and talk of these twins really moved me.
Really enjoyed this video as these two certainly deserve some loving and appreciation. Thanks so very much for this video Yoystan.

Like you, I think they would have ultimately gone over the Sea to be with their father and especially their mother, the latter of whom they had not seen in thousands of years.
There are two possible times in my opinion: (1) relatively soon - a few years - after Elrond himself left, perhaps when Celeborn finally forsook Middle Earth to sail to Valinor for the first time as he is one of their grandfathers, or (2) perhaps they stayed in Middle Earth just over 120 years to look out for their little sister Arwen, who had chosen the path of mortality in her life with Aragorn. Perhaps when he had died, and she lingered for a year before herself finally dying, they had no further reason to stay in Middle Earth and departed to join the others.

If i were to write chapter by Chapter a story about these wonderful lads, would anybody be interested. I'd do it solely for myself but i prefer to enrich other's lives if possible.
It will be about the accepting their role in Middle Earth, that they don't have be their father, but neither can they escape the fate of being Elrond's son and Galadriel's grandsons and the lineage of their forbearers.
Specifically, saving their mother (obviously a pivotal moment that shaped them as men to come for centuries).
Their acceptance of their sisters choice to marry a mortal man, even one so respected and loved ad Aragon.
I have lots of ideas and yes, I will do it justice. I promise. No Amazon treatment from me, a true lifelong fan, that has read all the books several times over.

I love all the twins in Tolkien’s works, especially since they all play such large roles. It’s a shame though that Tolkien pays so little attention to them.
The e-twins version 1-3 are all so interesting characters (especially Elrond and Elros), and the Amburussar too are interesting if only because they are the Sons of Feanor.

Twins are interesting, aren't they, so often found in mythology, and Tolkien's works are a complete mythology in its scope. Elrond and Elros are vital to the whole legendarium; Elladan and Elrohir are mysterious but they seemed to do so much. Tolkien merely teases but I think there could be a lot of depth and a great backstory- I love them. As for my young ginger-haired brothers, they were slightly insane, like most of my dysfunctional family, except for my eldest brother, who was pretty cool 😁 We won't mention Elured and Elurin.

In terms of why did they (at least temporarily) stay in Middle Earth, to me the answer is rather simple: we saw amongst most of the young Noldor a desire to rule their own realms, at least for a while. Galadriel in her youth was most smitten with this, and I've little doubt that her grandsons may have wanted a taste of it as well. With their father gone West, they were now the big cheese, for any elfin issues that occurred outside of Lothlorien and Mirkwood. There had to be some satisfaction in that! But in Valinor, they'd of course be essentially nobodies: who'd submit to them, with Elrond, Finarfin, Ingwe, and ultimately Manwe, around? It's probably the same reason that Thranduil was so reluctant to go... who'd care about him (or even his resurrected father Oropher) in the presence of Olwe, or even a resurrected Thingol?

Perhaps Elladan and Elrohir, as King Elessar of Gondor at age 210 had passed in honour to his forebears, the brothers would remain with their sister, Arwen Undomiel.

Elladan and Elrohir would kick the crap out of Legolas. Peter Jackson should have showed them off.

Can't wait for the what-if video for what if Gandalf never fell at the Bridge of Khazad-dum and continued with the fellowship to Lothlorien and on forward?

If they wanted to include Arwen in the movies , why not have her join Elladan and Elrohir when they went to back up Aragorn ?

I would like to think they stayed in Middle Earth to run the last Homely house. For a long time, before sailing west. 😊

It seems likely that they must have left for the West or been killed in combat (which would send them there anyway). Remember that Arwen didn't die of old age, so it is a bit of a plot hole that she made the choice of Men (after living about 3,000 years). But she did seemingly die alone. My sense is that the brothers left with Celeborn to rejoin their parents and family in Valinor. The Orcs seem to undergo their own diminishment after the fall of Sauron. Having been created in defiance of Eru Iluvatar, it may have required the power of a Dark Lord to enable them to continue breeding. Without Morgoth or Sauron, their numbers would have dwindled too as Men whittled away at their numbers. So the brothers would not have needed to remain to fight them. Arwen stayed because she loved and married Aragorn. Elladan and Elrohir didn't have any such romantic connections that we know of.

Are we just assuming that Elladan and Elrohir took ship and sailed into the West? Or does Tolkien ever actually confirm that?

The sons of Lord Elrond should have been included in the movies. Doesn't make sense as to why they were excluded. 🤔🤔🤔 What were the writers thinking ??????????????
