Elros Tar-Minyatur, First King of Númenor | Tolkien Explained

- Опубліковано 12 тра 2023
- Elros, the brother of Elrond, chose to live a mortal life. He becomes the first king of Númenor and would lead his kingdom to greatness over 410 years of rule. His decision to be counted among men and the manner of his death would mirror those of Arwen and Aragorn.

I love the detail of Elros following the star of Earendil to get to Numenor. His father guiding him to his new home. It's beautiful in a way.
Probably just so he could annoy him with dad jokes, the greatest expression of the love of a father
@@dragoninthewest1 what’s brown and sticky? A stick
@@ni1469 Elros: haha, very funny dad 🙄
Hobbits are the nicest people in middle earth. They never look down on anyone
@@ni1469 out of topic but ok
I’m definitely all for anything Numenor related. It may have met a terrible end and lasted only so long in the grand scheme but man it was a fascinating place.
Possibly the greatest kingdom in the history of Arda!
Yeah it was also an inspiration for future kings of gondor
Speaking of fascinating regions in the second age can we see more on Eregion
It lasted over 3000 years, which is a bit more than only so long I'd say.
I like how Elros came about because Tolkien thought Elrond was so awesome that he ended up giving him a twin brother.
Jesus, Aragorn’s farewell speech to Arwen got me cryin.😢
Yay thanks for a video on Elros. It always felt like he was overshadowed by his brother which we cannot blame.
Elrond was overshadowed tho by Elros' descendent Aragorn Elessar II. Hahaha
My second favorite character behind Turin. I wish Christopher and JRR had discussed Elros more in their correspondence. I've always wondered if Elrond thought much of his brother during the 3rd Age and whether or not his feelings towards Aragorn (and his family) stemmed from Elros.
Probably so. It is said many of Elros’ descendants, including Aragorn, resembled Elros. How emotional it must’ve been for Elrond to occasionally see his brother’s face within the generations of his descendants through the centuries.
The ring of Barahir is particularly interesting to me, not just because it's one of the oldest (inanimate) objects in Middle Earth at the time of the war of the ring, but also because it has been worn on so many and important hands. It was in the possession of Finrod, Beren, Elros, Elendil, Isildur, all kings of Arnor and finally of Aragorn and Arwen. It's far older than all rings of power and although it has no great power of its own, it's still mindblowingly old and important. And the story of how it survived the shipwreck of Arvedui is also pretty interesting, perhaps one day you could make a video about this and similar artifacts?
I think the only objects in Middle Earth in TA 3019 that are even older are the Palantíri, which were probably made by Feanor himself. It's fascinating to think that the stone that Pippin picks up from the ground of Isengard was made in the light of the two trees by the greatest of all children of Illúvatar. (But then again they interact with Gandalf all the time and he was present during the music of the Ainur before the creation of the world...)
Awesome observation. It would have been neat, too, if Thingol's sword would have survived the downfall of Numenor. I know Rings of Power shows Turin's dragon-helm in the high tower of Numenor as a backround glimpse (sooo cool). But I don't know if the books state if this item was saved?
@@Swatta637 Nothing was saved from Númenor except the thing that were brought onto the ships of Elendil and his sons. The most notable of these were the seven Palantíri, the stone of Erech, the last seedling of the white tree, the ring of Barahir and the sceptre of the princes of Andunië, later known as the sceptre of Annúminas (it was kept by Elrond and is handed to Aragorn at his coronation to serve as the royal symbol of Arnor). This sceptre was the oldest known man-made object in Middle Earth in 3019, but not older than the ring and the stones (made by elves). The other important heirlooms of Númenor were lost with the island or with the army of Ar-Pharazôn, so as far as I know this includes the axe of Tuor, the sword of Thingol and other things. However, Glamdring (the sword of Turgon) survived until the third age, but I think it wasn't brought to Númenor.
@@untruelie2640 Ah, right. The fall of Numenor is so sad. :(
that Aragorn part in the end brought tears to my eyes. so beautiful (and beautifuly presented)
In the Council of Elrond, Elrond says he was at the breaking of Thangorodrim in the 1st Age. It follows that Elros would have been there as well.
Love this guy's storytelling. Also love the fact that weapons had personalities and meant something and went on for generations.
wow this explains why Elrond took such good care of Aragorn, he was his distantly related grand nephew :0 that's such a cool piece of lore
Elrond and Elros, Tolkien‘s Twin Paradoxon: One Twin is mortal, the other Twin is immortal.
And the mystery if they would ever meet again, because the final doom of men is unknown.
How about this, Elrond had two twin uncles, a twin brother, and two twin sons.
One suffered the death, the other suffered all the years of time. In the end, time and tide will sweep them all away.😭
@@rothbardfreedomthey will one day meet again after the Dagor Dagorath, the Last Battle which shall result in the end and remaking of Arda with all the Children of Ilúvatar united.
I wish we had more tales about Elros and the early days of Numenor.
That was Amzing Video Matt! Tolkien did such an Amazing Job showing us these Thoughts with Elrond and Elros. Very cool!
Interesting fact: Tolkien created Elrond, some time later out of darkness came Elros and they become twins.
It's wonderful how Tolkien describes death as gift of men.
Nice work dude
Elros was one of the best kings.

Elros is one of my favorite Tolkien characters.
Top stuff, as always ❤
Wonderful! Thank you.
Elros and his father Earendil are Tolkein's characters I most wish we knew more about, since the story around the kingdom of Numenor is my favorite. Elros shows the potential of Man to rise to such incredible heights, and Numenor 3000 years later of how low it's fall can be.
I was gonna ask for an updated video on Elros, then I found this one. Definitely an interesting story with his and Elrond's decision. That and seeing how Elrond cared for his brothers lineage through the ages.
FINALLY, THANK YOU!!!!
just saying, if they decide to have older Elros in a flashback onscreen, he should be played by Hugo Weaving. Full on beard and everything.

Numenor! :D Awesome.
It is strange how Elrond and Elros accept Maglor as their surrogate father. It must have taken a long time to earn that trust.
They were basically toddlers, not much trust necessary
I have been waiting forever for this video OMG I am dying with excitement. ❤😊😍😆
One of my favorites!
Thanks for this great video, just one question: Will you upload more videos of the Kings of Númenor? Because it would be great to hear about some of them or notable Númenoreans.
The artwork is quite possibly the headiest thing ever created
Just about halfway thru Unfinished Tales.. solid timing on this.
Keep up the great work man. 😎👍 Peace ✌🏻
Thanks so much!
I wish there had been more detail in books on the relationship between Elros and Elrond
In earlier versions, the Adunaic name for Elros was Indilzar Azrabelo, and later changed to Gimilzor. Later, the name Gimilzor was given to the twenty-third king of Numenor.
Kinda sad the house of Haleth doesn't have any heirloom
Do some part videos on the leaders of the 12 houses of Gondothlim!
You have done Turgon, Tuor, and Glorindel, so you don't need to worry about them if you prefer.
They can be in two parts, but be sure Maeglin in the focus of one and then Ecthelion for the other one. You should probably include Salgant in the one with Maeglin, but the rest you can decide for yourself then!
Tolkiens creations are so far ahead of what anyone else succeeded with. Should take many generations of work by creating such a huge yet detailed world, language, calendar etc + religion and its symbolism and too much to write. Most of all his fantasy and taking Nordic language & mythology some anglo-saxon (Rohan)
We are blessed by how much he created and what his children continued his legacy.
Look at all of thel storylines which came together to create Eärendils journey. Starting from the oath of Feänor to all the way from Beren+Luthien, curse of Hurin to the fall of Gondolin. Wonder if the thought came later or if he planned to create the last heir from all of the most honorable houses of the Edain & Noldor+Sindarin (+Maya). All by dying terribly tragic deaths. All of the biggest strongholds/cities falling to Morgoth because of oaths aswell as curses leading them to destroy eachother. Leaving Gondolin to fall cause of by Maeglin, who was cursed by his father to die the same way after being sentenced to death for killing his wife who was sister of Turgon. Who ignored the doom and warning and did not think of betrayal by his own kin which the doom fortold. All leave one heir who got together with Earändil meeting Elwing who becomes a star and she a goose leaving the twins with top tier blood from 3 races. Elrond and Elros played immense roles too. Without Elrond there would not been a retake Erebor, no fellowship, saved Arnor several times against the which king. Also Lord & creator of Imladris, the elven stronghold to pose a threat. Also advised all free people to victory for thousands of years etc. Elros begins the line of Nümenor, which crushed him twice then to Arnor and gondor who fought for good to the end, creating age of men. Also because how Elrond raised his brothers heirs, now cheiftains till such a man as Aragorn finally came Who became as noble and honorable the early Kings of old and the man who emerged as king when age of men begun. Also saved every items such as Narsil and ring of Barahir to pass on the royal line.
Is there a complete family tree from Elros to Aragorn?
Tolkein was out of this world. I still can't believe he wrote all those details
Ugh, the feels.
One of my hopes is that oneday a movie/franchise/series will be made on how numenor was created, elros and his rule, nature of numenor..
As long as they don't pollute the story with any post-modern, EID bullshittery.
@@moistmike4150 I disagree with you in the following sense: I anticipate every adaptation about Middle earth and I'll watch it and judge it accordingly. For example, ROP has many positive impacts as well as negative ones for sures.. but overall i enjoyed it... so let them compete about adapting.. and i think we fans will be the winners.
@@Sam-ig2jm Hmmm... I'm gonna hafta disagree with you there. ROP is a post-modern, EID bullshittery in its most distilled form. Whatever creative production comes out of Tolkien's work in the future, it simply must maintain Tolkien's original character and ethos in order to be of value to those who love the world J.R.R. created.
Great video (as always). I see a lot of links for the artwork, but what about the music? Would love to get that if possible!

I am squirreling here but never, and I mean never, forget Debbie!!!
And beyond them is more than memory.❤
I wonder how Earendil and Elwing must've felt when one of their sons choose the life of Men who were doomed to die.
Remember that Ëarendil wanted to choose as his son Elros later does, but went with Elven life because Elwing chose so.
I like to Think Elros and Elrond met several times during Elros' reign in Númenor.
Niceee!!!
Kinda funny how many if not most lotr artists use beards to separate between men and elves while the men or Numenorean decent, or at least the line of Elendil are all clean shaven if I remember correctly. Beards are more associated with Middlemen, well and Dwarfs of course
Thx for the Video very untresting indeed. Is there any reason for why he did choose to become mortal man over elf?
Surprised you didn’t do a dive on a great mother or mothers considering the weekend.
Watching this before registering my sons name at the local council. =)
I never knew elros had those heirlooms
Thats amazing, the sword* of Elu Thingol
*sword, not bow
Could you make a video about elessar ( The stone)?
Is there a video where nerd of the ring, talks about how and what the one ring made of? Or is there no information?
I can’t help but wonder WHY Elros chose to become mortal. We are never told why. What could have motivated him to separate from his parents and brother forever? My best guess is that he fell in love with a mortal woman who became his wife and the mother of his children (who is sadly never named), and for her, he made the same choice that Lúthien made for Beren.
To be fair, Elros and Elrond had LOADS of childhood trauma that was *specifically* caused by elves, and choosing to live as an immortal meant he’d be stuck with their self-destructive acts and petty rivalries forever, even after a possible physical death from accident or violence, since he’d inevitably be brought back to a physical form. That’s not to say men weren’t equally problematic, but Elros grew up away from them and may have viewed choosing mortality as a fresh start, and a way to live and die on his own terms instead of being defined by either his bio-family or semi-adopted family.
Hey man, I keep seeing meme about Elrond pushing Isildur in Mt Doom. Any chance for a "What if..." speculation video?
Whats interesting is after, mortal Men saw their own mortality as a curse while the immortal Elves saw Men's mortality as a gift.
Even more interesting is that Eonwe asks which one should be envious.
Grass is always greener on the other side and so on
Elros did not have a beard. It is one of the signature traits of the decendent's of Earendil.
To me Elros deffinitely participated in the War of wrath (dunno about Elrond but Elros is must), he was 56 till the war end, that the only way i can see how he worthy enough to be chosen to become the first king of the Edain
I think there is a possibility that Elros must've formed a deeper friendship and camaraderie with the Edain during the War of Wrath hence why he choose to become a mortal man and the first King of Numenor.
@@fallenaeon7084 we known the Edain did joined the war, hence someone must lead them, to me its hard to believe it's not Elros
Like, will you choose to follow that high born guy but didn't do anything over a guy who really lead you through all the crap in that war, even Arragorn with the blood of Isildur and Anarion in his vein still not be accept as king till the people known about his journey
In LOTR in the Council of Elrond, he spoke about being at the breaking of Thangorodrim. It follows that Elros was there as well.
hey i have a question not this video related , if the eye of sauron didnt exist in the books from what i heard what motivated aragorn and the army to go to mordor because they did that to distract the eye in the movie?
It was to give enough time for Frodo to throw the Ring into the fires of Mt.Doom without Sauron and his forces detecting his presence there. It was basically a distraction deploy by Aragon and the Men of the West at the gates of Mordor. And yeah Sauron was not reduced to a literal giant eyeball.
Would be really interested what Elrond is thinking about his father
It wouldn’t surprise me to learn he has…complicated opinions about his parents. One wasn’t there when things went down (and apparently was away from them a lot) and then somehow became a star but never came back, and the other legit turned into a bird and left her children to the mercy of the Feanorians. Granted, Elwing definitely wouldn’t have won a fight against them, and said Feanorians did actually show some mercy in this one instance, but I’m pretty sure Elrond wouldn’t love that she literally flew off with a shiny rock and left them to fate. That’s not to say Eärendil and Elwing were bad people, but they made some massive mistakes as parents.
Yeah, so none of the house of Elros had beards.
If you read HOME, the Numenorans did not age like normal people, they remained in full vigor until they felt the call of death. So Elros appearing like he does in that drawing is apocryphal, he would have looked the same as Elrond, up to the point that he died.
Does Arwen have the opportunity to reunite with Aragorn upon her passing?
Indeed she does. Her choice is to be counted among the kindred of men, so her fate will be that of men (whatever it may be - only Iluvatar knows). This makes her decision all the more heart-breaking for Elrond, because his fate is different being an elf. It's part of why I love Elrond so much - he knows the "best case scenario" is him losing his daughter forever, yet he still sets Aragorn on the path he does.
So Arwen and Aragon are distantly related
Freaken, Debby.
Vardimir waiting for the crown llike Charles III waiting to become King after the Queen.
Love the poignancy surrounding Tolkien's idea of "The Gift of Men". Tolkien was deeply Christian and although he strongly disavowed any use of allegory in his writings, his creation is heavily steeped in the Christian ethic.
Can you explain in some video or maybe just like a few minutes how can some elves just say I want to be mortal now it is something that always interested me. Could they be like " Oh I dont want to be mortal anymore I want my immortalita now again" ?
No they can't do that. Those who were offered the choice could only make the decision once and they were then bound by it for the rest of their lives.
Your average elf can't choose to be mortal - with the exception of Luthien, who managed to persuade the powers that be to let her share her human lover Beren's fate. Otherwise the choice was only offered to the children of a marriage between an elf and a human (or between one of their children and another elf), and there weren't that many of them. Hope this helps!
If Elrond and Elros were raised by a son of Feanor, why didn't the Oath of Feanor fall to them ... or was it that the Silmarils were so far out of reach by this time that the Oath was ended? I may have just answered my own question, but thanks for your answer.
If l understand that correctly the Oath of Feanor only effects those who proclaimed it, so it only takes hold of Feanor and his sons
@@colourless1807 ... I wondered if that was the case. Thanks! I appreciate it.
That oath was bound only to Feanor's sons. It did not have a hold anyone else.
@@Alexs.2599 ... Thanks! I appreciate the answer.
@@travismoore7938 You're welcome, cheers!
Elros the king among Men
How was it possible for half elven to choose if they want to be mortal or immortal? Wasn't it by birth?
Manwë, with the blessing of Eru Iluvatar, gave the half-elven the right to decide which race they would be.
I always feel like the whole Elwing being a bird and then Earendil flying in a skyship with a Silmaril headlight, but being a star that doesn't move as some kind of Tolkien fever dream. It's just weird.
Wait... so this means that Aragorn is distantly related to Elrond?
Yes, Arwen aswell
So upset I’m at work. Cant wait until 4pm to watch this bad boy
If valar had the power to raise numenor then why not raise beleriand itself?
Wait wait wait, does that mean Aragorn married his great great great great x286 aunt?
Yes, but is that really an issue when the family is that far apart? IRL you may as well not marry anyone because you’ll be distantly related
He also most likely brought Narsil with him. He most likely got the sword from Maglor who was gifted it by Telchar.
So could Sauron survive in the world of Harry Potter?
Does Tolkien explain why the Edain accepted Elros as king? He doesn't appear to have done anything particularly noteworthy for or on behalf of Men during or after the war until he becomes king. Surely there were Men who were equally deserving of the kingship. Did the Valar just decide that since he was half-elven he should be king, and force it on Men?
I don't think Tolkien specifically says why. However, there were not a whole lot of the Edain left after the wars against Morgoth. Elros almost certainly fought in the War of Wrath and his lineage included royalty and nobility from both the Noldor and Sindar and the Houses of Beor and Hador. There's a really good chance that, once he made the choice to be counted among Men, he was the highest ranking one alive.
Well I would say it's because Elros was a descendant from all the three houses of the Edain and had Noldorin, Telerin and Vanyar Elvan lineage in him. Not to mention was a descendant through Earendil, his father, to Turgon king of Gondolin, Beren and Luthien, Elu Thingol and Melian the Maia of Doriath. He probably had a natural leadership quality about him.
500 year's! Boy, Elros hung in there eh? 🤣 He really was the greatest king of Numenor. I can't WAIT to see season 2 of ROP. I would like to see a deeper dive into the look of the great city of Numenor (island). 🤘😁🖖🇨🇦
Every time you use that pic at 6:00 I think it's peak-Floyd Roger Waters. 😂
Honest question: When Elros chose humanity, rather than waiting 1,000 of years to grow a beard, now, no longer half elven, can he grow a beard roughly at the same maturity level as a normal human?
Yes
Hes a human.
No he never had a beard. The line of Elros, descending down to Aragon, remained beardless because that Elven trait lingered within that line. Tolkien stated that in his notes. Elros would have been beardless his whole life. The Elven blood remained strong in him, minus immortality within Arda of course.
