I so wanted to be a ranger, with a name of Ara----, after I read the books. Heck, when I played D&D a few years later I was always a ranger. Thank you for this & all your videos.
In a way, Dunedain remind me of Veterans that come back from combat, in both how they act, and are treated by others. They go out of their way to protect the peoples of their lands, but have a bad reputation for it. they go thankless for their deeds, and we, like Barliman Butterbur, need to realize they are deserving of the highest respect for these actions.
Excellent analysis. I think the treatment of vets varies from region to region (& of course each individual is different). Here in the south people always seem appreciative while out west people don't really serm to care. I've never been treated disrespectfully at least, although I know others who have.
"To those who fight for it, Life has a special flavor the protected will never know" - words of an unknown Marine found written on C-ration cardboard, so the legend goes. "Past glories are poor feeding" - Old German saying
Yes exactly! The Dunedain have immense courage. They aren't nearly as powerful compared to the forces invading their land, but they still fight the invaders to defend their land and its people. People like that (in real life) are incredible and deserve to be honored for their courage and sacrifice.
Excellent video sir! The Rangers were always my favorite characters, especially Aragorn. In fact, recently I purchased the Ring of Barahir from The Noble Collection. It is a BEAUTIFUL piece and well worth buying.
Us Rangers of the North still exist in the 2021st year of the Fourth age, some calls us Jedi's or superheroes or even special ops but the line of the Dúnedain still exists and the ring of Barihir is still passed from kin to friends and allies. The star of the Dúnedain still shines⭐⭐⭐
Some bits of information from the books that give insight about how important the Rangers were: Aragorn says in the Council of Elrond "Peace and Freedom, you say? The North would have known them little but for us. Fear would have destroyed them. But when dark things come from the houseless hills, or creep from sunless woods, they fly from us." We can then assume that there were many dangers in the wild North, and that it wouldn't have taken much time for them to overrun the towns and settlements if the Rangers hadn't been there. "'Strider' I am to one fat man who lives within a day's march of foes that would freeze his heart, or lay his little town in ruin, if he were not guarded ceaselessly." As to what the Rangers guarded against, we can safely assume Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, and Barrow Wights. They also worked South, so probably they guarded against raiders and bandits from Dunland. We also know they went North, perhaps to guard against remnants from the Witch King's forces from ages past. Best and birds from sunless woods, and spies more evil than they are...
Would've been cool. Though I believe Aragorn would be in his late 20's, right? I believe the Quest of Erebor happened 60 years before the LOTR story. Aragorn was 87 there.
@@alex-ug7xc In The Tale of Years in the LOTR Appendices, Aragorn was born around 2931, and the Quest of Erebor took place in 2941. After Bilbo left, Frodo waited another 17 years before he left the Shire. The movie compresses that 17 years into like 3 minutes. Bilbo left when Frodo was 33. Frodo was 50 when he left The Shire
I really love this channel, Yoystan. I can relate to the Rangers of Middle Earth, because I was a Ranger once, when I was in the Army. I'd like to think we were as noble and honourable.
I agree with you Yoystan, the Dúnedain and their descendants the Rangers of the North are one of the coolest concepts of the legendarium. Of such noble heritage, from honored Númenor, they kept watch of their old homeland unbeknownst to their modern inhabitants and have now been redeemed with the coming of King Elessar and the revival of the Reunited Kingdoms!
Poignant playing LOTRo when you work with the Grey Company and have a feeling for some of these lone men of the West and their loyalty and integrity - thank you for sharing. Beautiful telling of their tales and some sage words of wisdom too :D
What a great story the fact that Dunedain endured thousands of years with little hope that one day the true King will return and restore their lands once again. And they succeeded.
You and Geek Zone need to do a collaboration video one day. I'd suggest an overview and rundown of the Battle of the Five armies at the end of The Hobbit.
"Few now remember them... yet still some go wandering, sons of forgotten kings walking in loneliness, guarding from evil things folk that are heedless." -Tom Bombadil on the Rangers -JRR Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Rings
I wished I lived in Middle Earth sometimes. I would love to be Ranger living in the wild keeping The Shire safe. Fantasy seems much better than reality in the world at times.
It's awesome to finally see you do a video on the people who influenced the naming of your channel! I really like reading and learning more about the Rangers and wish that we could learn more about them and what exactly they did, especially during the War of the Rings.

May I just say that I absolutely approve of you working with GeekZone, and I would personally love to see you guys collaborate and have a conservation about some of these things in the legendarium.
"...as are all who love Tolkien's works" you hit the nail on the head. I can't help but notice that while discussions about Tolkien's work occur, these are usually mature discussions. People are open to others points of view and treat each other with respect. Compare that to, say, Star Wars, where people bitch if you don't like the movie that's someone else's favourite.
Agreed. Though sadly I have seen some LOTR fans be jerks too. But it's not very common. But yeah Star Wars and the war between fandoms of Marvel and DC is really toxic anymore. I enjoy all of the franchises, LOTR being my number 1 favorite. I just don't understand why people have to be so mean and petty now days. It's really sad to see.
Tolkien will be the eternal optimist, but many of his readers have become more cynical. The general populace has lost faith in many local and world leaders. They believe they regularly act in their own self interest (wherever you land on the political spectrum) rather than benefit the common good and refuse to change their ways. It seems that, like ASOIAF teaches, the worse you are, the better you do in society. And as much as I’d love to disagree with that, I think it’s on to something.
@NihlusGreen Indeed. Good Star Trek (TOS and TNG) has always been about hope, optimism and about building a world, in which somone would actually want to live in. But Modern producers seem to completely missunderstand this message and make series with bad and uninspired writing and pointless action. That's why i fear the worst for the upcoming LotR series. The makers seem to have deliberately chosen one of the most miserable eras in tolkiens work. I fear they just want to have a opportunity to show violence and miserable people. It all seems to me they just want to jump on the GoT train. I'll be extremely cautious about that series.
When the night is the darkest, the sea the most tumultuous and hope a distant memory, to persevere and fight for a better future is even more noble. Great personal sacrifices are made and difficult decisions taken, heroes are forged in such circumstances. Nothing is more honorable than standing tall when the world around you is cowering or fleeing in fear, it emboldens others.
The respect and admiration Peter Jackson had for Tolkien's work is evident in the movies and how he wanted everything authentic as humanly possible. He brought Tolkien's world and vision to life and I love him for it!
@@timothybessemer7316 you can't expect for the movie to match the book in every single aspect when it's two different people. Jackson is going to do some small things that doesn't affect the major plot and storylines because it's his chance to put his own spin on things. Also, that arc is more interesting for a film. I didn't like it that much either but I respect how he ended his character in the film. These films are an adaptation of Tolkien's original work. Not a copycat. So many people don't take in to account the thought and energy that Peter and his crew put into costumes, dialects and languages, always staying on the main plot with only a few branches of personal creativity from a guy who deserves to have his own twists on things because of how much thought he put into these films
The Bystander thats your opinion.... but a cash grab it was not for the movie though not as good as the first 3 it was still epic. I have read and owned the simarillion and all six LOTR books and I must say JACKSON adaptation is probably unmatched. But your opinion I respectfully disagree.

“Wherever you are in Middleearth.” Today I’m in Dol Amroth. Great video, one my favorites you’ve done. So cool to hear the Rangers worked against dark forces outside public eyes. They fought to keep people safe without the reward of praise or notoriety. Says a lot about their bravery and devotion.
Mae govannen Yoystan. Thanks again for taking the time to make another video in regards to Tolkien's world. This was a very interesting video and now I know a little bit more about the Dúnedain rangers.
Excellent channel :) great videos. Was always a big fan of the Rangers. Found a connection between the ranger life and my own interests. Besides history and archery etc..When i was a wee nipper my dad would take me hiking, camping teaching me how to build a shelter, different fires etc how to keep warm without a shelter nor fire. How to fish. How to spot tracks and identify them and plants for food and medicine etc. Im a tad grey now hah and passing on my knowledge but could happily live like that always. The Rangers..Range! They live in the wild. I love that. Once again, superb video. Youve earned a new subscriber:)
Loved the vid! I always wanted to know more about the Dúnedain. There's just a little bit of confusion I have. At around 4:30 you say that the cloak clasps were 6-pointed stars, but the illustrations show 8-pointed stars. I didn't see anyone else bring this up in the comments, so I may be mishearing things. Apart from that, I'm glad to know more about the Rangers. I didn't know how humble they were in doing good deeds with no desire for fame, a trait we should all aspire to have. Thank you again for making Tolkien's legendarium more accessible for those of us who don't have the time or money to delve into his work.
Rumors has it, Yoystan is a Dúnedain Ranger...Is This True Yoystan?!!! I just saw this video and subscribed instantly. As a fan of LOTR and The Silmarillion, I'll surely watch your other videos whenever time permits. Stay safe. Rock on! 🤘⭐
I wish they'd done the Scouring of the Shire in the movies. Would have loved to see the Fellowship coming back wearing steel, catching weird looks from everyone and stomping ass. Awesome video as always.
It's one of my favorite parts. Especially when the Gaffer shows up, criticizes Sam. Frodo says that Sam has been great and is famous around the world: "It takes a lot o' believing," said the Gaffer,"though I can see he's been mixing in strange company." It was wonderful to see the old hobbit, impatient with talk of saving the world from a legendary powerful evil, bluntly saying "they dug up my tatters." Tolkien said that he saw Sam as the hero of LOTR...and even he couldn't convince the Gaffer that Sam is a hero.
You could substitute this tale for almost all of the Lord of the Rings and not miss much aside from the travels of Ford, Sam, and Stinker/Slinker. The way you wove the two branches of Rangers together bringing the end of the story with the Battle of Black Gate really pulls so much background forward with very little to actually use from the source and you did so oh so very eloquently & passionately. My thanks to the namesake of these men ... for you sir ... a not only a fan but a fair voice to further along those who are but casual fans of the worlds of Tolkien.
Not to sound eccentric, but any other channel that try's to make these videos about middle earth wouldn't be the same. You have certain way when it comes to your video's that makes them unique. So good job. And thank you.
I love wild camping, bushcraft and what not so I recently took a deeper look into the Dúnadain rangers and they really stuck out to me. I love that noble and as you said virtuous survivalist archetype. The mysteriousness of them and their deeds as well as their mysterious land commonly referred to as "the lost lands of Arnor" is very cool too.
This is the best quote about the Dunedain of the North: "`Peace and freedom, do you say? The North would have known them little but for us. Fear would have destroyed them. But when dark things come from the houseless hills, or creep from sunless woods, they fly from us. What roads would any dare to tread, what safety would there be in quiet lands, or in the homes of simple men at night, if the Dúnedain were asleep, or were all gone into the grave? `And yet less thanks have we than you. Travellers scowl at us, and countrymen give us scornful names. "Strider" I am to one fat man who lives within a day's march of foes that would freeze his heart or lay his little town in ruin, if he were not guarded ceaselessly. Yet we would not have it otherwise. If simple folk are free from care and fear, simple they will be, and we must be secret to keep them so. That has been the task of my kindred, while the years have lengthened and the grass has grown"
Great video yoystan and the rangers are also one of my favorite characters in the lord of the rings despite their mistrust from the people of Bree. And I have a suggestion could you do a character history video on Arwen or a video explaining the history of minas tirith?
Great video Yoystan. Also, I noticed how amazing the channel growth has been since i subscribed in the early fall when you were at pre 200k levels. I'm happy to see you gaining so much so quickly, you deserve it!
I love your videos! Something I would enjoy seeing would be an alternate timeline theory about how the world history would change if the three elvish rings were tainted by Sauron and the rings of men were somehow left untainted or hidden.
Hasan Wilson Actually only Elros Elrond's brother and Aragorn's ancestor lived to be 500 years old. During the third age that line decreased in numbers and the lifespan of the Dunedain got shorter as they mingled with peoples of lesser lineage. That did include though people of non royal Numenorean descent. So by the time of Aragorn, while having a lifespan double the amount of Men of non Numenorean blood, it was still less then his ancestors had. For example Elendil and Isildur.
Again I'm humbled by the words imprinted in my spirit as I served along side of Rangers (75th Regiment, First Battalion, A Co "Alpha Force", 1st Platoon, Weapons), "We will not accept accommodation, treasure, or spoils for our mission. A Rangers prize is the heroics untold." These words ringing loudly in my spirit as Aragorn's quote was evoked in your video. Well done my friend; Castle Midian salutes your efforts!
Oh how I wished Peter Jackson could have inserted just a brief scene in RotK or even TT where the group of Rangers of the North appear before Aragorn to show support for their future King. Even if we didn't see them again in the movie(s) it would have been worth it for me. The movie made me feel like Aragorn was the ONLY Dunedain living West of the Misty Mountains LOL

I would have loved seeing the Dunedain Rangers jumping off the Corsair ships to the aid of Gondor and their king instead of the army of the undead in the movie.
-“I bid you Stand! Men of the WEST!”
I'd have taken both
almost countless are the things i would have loved to see differently in the movies....
@Melkhiordarkblade are you for real now? the army? they were what 30 rangers against the tens of thousands of mordor...that would not have added or taken away that. And even with or without in the book it was also the only hope to winn that Frodo made it. Haldir coming to Helms deep isnt in the book so if it was true to the book that wouldnt have been a repetition of that....also I would have taken the grey company coming to a REAL Aragorn insted of Elrond trying to talk the guy that didnt want to be king to go and get the ghost busters army from the movie and then make it sweap out minas tirith....Gimli even makes a point in the movie...they could have kept them and won the whole war...that shit in the movies was just realy realy awful...like many other things in it.
@@jimbombadill
I dislike many things about the movies (elves in helms deep, the ghosts in minas tirith and so on) but i would not call the movies shit, they are still very good book adaptions.
@@marckrieger3277 i can go as far as to say that there are some good things in the movies...for me its mostly the visuals and some other things...but they killed many of the characters and also just made alot of things for the sake of comersialism. Legolas the girl idol, Gimli the funny sidekick...and so on. I felt sadly that Peter Jaksson lacked a deeper knowledge of the books or didnt have time enough to get it on film...some say "yes it movies this had to be done"...but realy had it? what do we know about that...they could have been done into more deep and magical movies in a slower pace and so on...and they might have been loved as much....this is Peter Jaksson version...and well there are more things about them that i dislike than like, sadly enough.

Me too man, me too.
Amen I love the rangers

Dude I need to find me a pathfinder 2e game
First character is totally gonna be a ranger
I just watch the Battle of Helms Deep and a Men of the West vid show up today. Awesome.
Also those Rangers are badass.
That is a very great point, my friend.
Excellent analysis.
I think the treatment of vets varies from region to region (& of course each individual is different). Here in the south people always seem appreciative while out west people don't really serm to care. I've never been treated disrespectfully at least, although I know others who have.
I wonder if Tolkien had had that sort of experience coming home after WWI.
"To those who fight for it, Life has a special flavor the protected will never know"
- words of an unknown Marine found written on C-ration cardboard, so the legend goes.
"Past glories are poor feeding"
- Old German saying
Some bits of information from the books that give insight about how important the Rangers were:
Aragorn says in the Council of Elrond "Peace and Freedom, you say? The North would have known them little but for us. Fear would have destroyed them. But when dark things come from the houseless hills, or creep from sunless woods, they fly from us."
We can then assume that there were many dangers in the wild North, and that it wouldn't have taken much time for them to overrun the towns and settlements if the Rangers hadn't been there.
"'Strider' I am to one fat man who lives within a day's march of foes that would freeze his heart, or lay his little town in ruin, if he were not guarded ceaselessly."
As to what the Rangers guarded against, we can safely assume Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, and Barrow Wights. They also worked South, so probably they guarded against raiders and bandits from Dunland. We also know they went North, perhaps to guard against remnants from the Witch King's forces from ages past. Best and birds from sunless woods, and spies more evil than they are...
I wonder if Bilbo met Aragorn when he visited Rivendell during the Quest of Erebor. Granted, Aragorn would only have been like 10 at the time...
@@paulwagner688 Ah I see, that makes sense then. Thank you for explaining!

I really love this channel, Yoystan. I can relate to the Rangers of Middle Earth, because I was a Ranger once, when I was in the Army. I'd like to think we were as noble and honourable.
I'm sure you were. Same hopes for me & my shipmates, too.
Thank you, my friend! And thank you for your service! I am sure that you were noble and honourable indeed!
Ranger's lead the way, my friend.
We are definitely in talks about a collab!
This is beautiful. God bless JRR Tolkien and you for your amazing work.
"Few now remember them... yet still some go wandering, sons of forgotten kings walking in loneliness, guarding from evil things folk that are heedless."

I wished I lived in Middle Earth sometimes. I would love to be Ranger living in the wild keeping The Shire safe. Fantasy seems much better than reality in the world at times.
This video is a chance for Men of the West, UA-camr of the internet, to show his quality.
It's awesome to finally see you do a video on the people who influenced the naming of your channel! I really like reading and learning more about the Rangers and wish that we could learn more about them and what exactly they did, especially during the War of the Rings.
Me and my friend are now wo-men of the west 😁 as we both subbed. I am so happy that I found this channel. I love everything middle earth related. I just can't seem to stop watching your videos. And by the way I really like your voice and how you pronounce the names. It is a rather delightful experience to listen to you. Thank you for making these.
Yes, I was looking forward for this!! That is the most awesome vid you have ever made, Yoystan thank you.😊

I love your videos. Always nice to see them in my notifications.
I’m so happy to see your channel thriving. There can never be enough Lord of the Rings content. Thank you!!
I always love how you start your videos with reading a little passage. This was yet another great video.
"hope for a better Future" that's sadly a rare view these days in modern media.
I didn't like Jackson's portrayal of Faramir though. Faramir in the books was not in the least tempted by the ring and said as much.
Except for the Hobbit. That was a cash grab.
The Bystander thats your opinion.... but a cash grab it was not for the movie though not as good as the first 3 it was still epic. I have read and owned the simarillion and all six LOTR books and I must say JACKSON adaptation is probably unmatched. But your opinion I respectfully disagree.
I actually said Yay when I saw the notification

The rangers were “special forces” of the kingdom

I wish they'd done the Scouring of the Shire in the movies. Would have loved to see the Fellowship coming back wearing steel, catching weird looks from everyone and stomping ass.
Awesome video as always.
It's one of my favorite parts.
Especially when the Gaffer shows up, criticizes Sam. Frodo says that Sam has been great and is famous around the world:
"It takes a lot o' believing," said the Gaffer,"though I can see he's been mixing in strange company."
It was wonderful to see the old hobbit, impatient with talk of saving the world from a legendary powerful evil, bluntly saying "they dug up my tatters."
Tolkien said that he saw Sam as the hero of LOTR...and even he couldn't convince the Gaffer that Sam is a hero.
Strider at the Prancing Pony chapters is one of my favorite sections in LOTR. Great video!

I was just looking for a Men of the West video Yesterday, then I just saw this. Cool!
Well done and one I was hoping to see - thanks!

So is Aragon the only one of the Rangers with the blood of numenor still in his veins?
I believe that his northern brothers also had the blood of westernesse, but his blood was the strongest, for it was the blood of kings.
@@MenoftheWest even so his was diluted blood and why he lived only 200 years. Where the blood of the kings of numenor could live for 500 years
Hasan Wilson Actually only Elros Elrond's brother and Aragorn's ancestor lived to be 500 years old.
@hasan Wilson I believe he chose to die for his son to become the new king.
