i think waymo and everything else than Tesla is a huge waste of Time and money, exactly like Hydrogen. like not thinking it all through. obviously you can get results quicker initially, but the geo location restrictions and the sensor overload Problem are unsolvable, there is no way arround than to remove them all. this is all useless because not scalable and especially not profitable, an absolute no-go from every standpoint. what it can do now is meaningless, what counts is what will it be able to do. Time will tell, my bet is on Elon.
Kim, be careful with the investments. Many investors see a shiny object and believe everyone will want one. And it's true, everyone will want one....until the true price is revealed. Stick with Elon and Tesla all the way. As an engineer, I can tell you that they are engineering to reach the best result for the most competitive costs. Waymo, Cruise, third party charging networks, and NIO (as another example) are all engineering for the hopes to create the absolute fanciest product regardless of cost competitiveness. They think that being the first to accomplish a task will make them the overall winner. Nope. NIO is the easiest, so let's start there. Their battery swap stations are going to be their downfall. There is no way that thousands of swap stations can cost compete with Tesla's superchargers when battery charge times will continue to improve. The costs associated with building, deploying, maintaining, powering, attending, and stocking the swap stations will never be able to be passed on to the consumers because consumers will always migrate and adapt to the cheapest methods available to accommodate their needs. Currently NIO is hiding the true costs of the battery swaps and when they attempt to pass these costs to their customers, the customers will abandon the ship....rapidly. Third party charger manufacturers tend to believe that they are making 'gas pumps' for EV's. They have credit card readers, screens and hoses long enough to reach around a bus. This is all extra expenses that are also currently being hidden from the consumer as they attempt to entice customers to use their dispensers for less than the true cost of the service. Hence, they all remain unprofitable. Waymo and Cruise have developed some awesome technology. It is truly impressive what they can do in San Francisco, Phoenix and Vegas. I would like to see how the $250k of sensors performs on I-5 near Bakersfield in March when the farmers place the honey bees in the fields. How about any northern winter drive after the snow, when the road spray is coating the cars? You know what Waymo and Cruise don't tell you? You guessed it....your rides were currently free. The true cost of your day's worth of rides will someday drop down to $150, while Tesla has designed for a system that will one day reach down into the sub $10 range. As an engineer, I do not see a scenario where Waymo's and Cruise's vast array of fair weather sensors and constant need for updated hi res mapped environments, will ever be cost effective when they begin to charge consumers enough to be profitable. All of those wonderful cameras and sensors need to be cleaned and maintained....and calibrated and aligned and replaced and upgraded and so forth. Now, go out and look at your Tesla. See how the forward cameras are protected by the windshield and constantly cleared by the wipers. See how the side cameras are located and they are typically clear of contaminants due to the airflow. The rear camera will need some kind of sprayer....Tesla goofed on that one in my opinion. Anyway, you see where I'm going with all of this. In the end, the least expensive implementation to perform the needed task is going to be the winner. The rocket can be bigger, shinier, and faster, but if it doesn't land on the boat it can't compete with SpaceX's prices... Try not to mistake a cross walk along the route as if it's the finish line. It's not about your current standing in the race...it's about who will be on the top of the podium at the end!
Thanks for letting Kim share this great experience with us. I was hoping that Waymo might share a little information. Would you mind divulging how much Kim would have been charged if it were not free? Or, at least what the cost per minute/mile is to Waymo to operate the fleet? Because, typically, the consumer is charged 2-3x times the cost of the service. Thanks in advance. I'm just curious and might actually invest if the numbers sound good enough.
@@TeslaDo_d Hey there! I take Waymo all the time in Phoenix and the price is similar to, if not a little cheaper than an Uber or Lyft. They did just recently introduce surge pricing during busy hours but non-busy times it's very affordable.
Someone yelling at you for stopping in front of their driveway is something I feel can only happen in an American city. People are so short wired, so angry, need to rush everywhere… ugh.
Facts I feel like in another country if you said sorry it's an autonomous car people would be like oh sorry. Only in America people would say I don't care move your fuc*ing car
In an recent interview the CEO of Waymo said that one area that needs improvement is pickup and drop off locations. Waymo wants to follow the law so it may tell you to walk a block or so to the vehicle where a taxi would just block the street until you get in. This is important for people with mobility issues. For example if my mother who is 93 wanted to take a Waymo and it told her to walk a block up some of the hills in SF, it's not going to work for her. BTW the CEO said that some of it's largest customers are people that are unable to drive or are have other mobility issues. This tech allows them to live a richer life, that's why pickup and drop off locations is important to figure out.
One of your coolest videos ever… I’m a fellow tesla owner and got to experience Waymo in January in Phoenix.. I totally relate to the emotions you had that this makes us realize that the future is here.. it’s just a matter of perfecting it and scaling. My ride was a two stop ride, about 6 miles each way with a 15 minute wait in the middle while I picked up my sandwich. The entire journey took about 30-35 minutes and only cost about $11. I filmed it and can’t wait to post a video on my channel about the experience, this needs to succeed because the benefits are too huge to ignore. By the way, loving the content that you and your husband are putting out.. You work great together and it’s a pleasure to watch, thanks for sharing this amazing experience. Good vibes!
While I’m planning on getting a Tesla, after spending quite a bit of time driving them as Turo rentals, I’m so glad I’m not a Tesla fanboy who can’t be objective. Thank you Kim for being an objective auto reviewer! This video gave me more insight into Waymo. I was staunchly in the camp of FSD being better solely because it didn’t rely on mapped areas, but after watching this video, while I still believe Tesla’s approach of being able to drive anywhere, not being confined to a designated mapped area, it seems Tesla could learn a few things from Waymo. Thanks Kim! Had to add: I love Tesla owners/UA-camrs like yourself and the few others that can be trusted to give an honest objective non-fanboy review/critique!
All of that is true and the Waymo technology is definitely interesting. However, Waymo's approach seems to be an unscalable solution. I am very skeptical that we will ever see Waymo branch out beyond a couple dozen heavily populated areas. It's just not possible to maintain high precision maps of the entire world and the hardware in these cars is probably close to $500k. For that reason, I don't really see Waymo as a competitor to Tesla's FSD. They are each trying to solve different use cases IMO and the only overlap is going to be in the handful of markets that Waymo can operate in efficiently enough to be profitable.
The car stopping in the driveway to pickup is fine. You taking pics and not letting it drive away immediately is your fault. At that point it is your car.
It will be short lived due to costs. Think about it. Did you purchase gas from the closest gas station, or did you cross the road to save $.05 per gallon? Do you fly South West, or do you fly Delta or Emirates to the same location? Do you take a taxi between cities or do you take a train? Do you buy name brands only, or do you buy the generics on occasion....and why? The Tesla network will be the cheapest by far and the cars will be plentiful.
I cannot wait until waymo comes to Seattle. Hopefully when it comes to Seattle I would be one of the first ones to riding waymo self driving cars because it would get me around a lot faster then having to take city busses & Link light rail. Because that would make it easy for a blind man like myself to get to my doctor's appointments and to go get to my bank to go pay the rent every month! That is why my advice is to Future riders get the blame on one app & up for service but first you'll need an invite code to do that.
Your WAYMO experience was just like my childhood experiences, Microwave oven, Big Screen TV, Cellular phones, Atari all inventions that I grew up on. We thought those items were really cool, especially Atari! I do believe that todays youth's children will in flying cars.
Waymo looks great, I think that it can only operate in it's mapped out space, meaning it wouldn't work (at this point) very well in an unfamiliar area.
But it still works where it is supposed to work. There is no other thing out there that works everywhere, and Teslas approach is faulty by design and will never reach any real autonomy if they do not change in a radical way.
The comment he made about this making him feel confident we'll see full autonomy in our lifetime was very poignant and impactful. I never thought about it that way but its so true
Thanks for the video! Neat to see how well it can navigate busy streets and complicated situations. I’m curious how Waymo ensures the cleanliness of the car between riders?
This is my first time seeing this tech. As someone that loves technology this is amazing. I never thought AI was capable of navigating our crazy city streets like this. Mind blown.
It’s not just LiDAR that gives waymo an advantage. It’s the extremely precise 3D maps and remote driver take overs. This is not a scaleable solution and why Tesla shouldn’t look to copy Waymo
That is so exciting! Many years ago, I would watch the Google cars zipping around the Bay Area streets and it would freak me out. But now, I’d hop into one of these cars no problem!
FSD is a level 2 system Nobody using it should trust it. That does not mean Tesla is worse, it is just going about solving self driving in a different way. Taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, to me it is Tesla holding all the aces.
Thank You so Much Kim & PJ for your amazing Waymo’s Experience several times in a interesting City and How well it did in each video, Kim your poem and final look on extra footage was priceless, I Love my CyberTruck Merch from you!!
Don't worry about that one guy yelling. San Francisco is decaying if you didn't know. People are very frustrated and angry over there now. Cool what the Waymo car can do. We've had these fully autonomous taxis driving around Irvine, CA as well. Pretty cool stuff.
Thank you for having me with you as you drive with Waymo Driverless car. Would be great if you could take me with you on a Tesla driverless car so I could compare both driverless cars objectively.
You’re still only driving on a map to roadway. LIDAR requires HD mapped roadways to form a comparison, while it drives. Since the amount of effort and data it requires to map every roadway in the world including dirt roads isn’t possible, Musk’s approach makes sense where Teslas can drive anywhere and learn to drive under all situations. Btw….Waymo has a remote center that is monitoring its taxis and they take over to steer out of situations when the car gets confused. Waymo is very good on it’s mapped routes only. It does not drive on highways, therefore it’s safety record is very good.
Seems quite good in Phoenix/ San Francisco. Not sure about the driving around cars stopped in traffic. Queue jumping would not be tolerated in Europe. And it all seems like it is run in slow motion. City traffic would grind to a halt like this.
From what I have read about this system. It is not the car that does the computations to how the car drives, but the info from the sensors is relayed back and forth to a central computer system. So the car is only part of the actual total system involved. Very impressive.
I remember and incident in where a pedestrian was hit at night crossing road in sometime of assisted driving vehicle for hire that had a human driving it at night that wasn't paying attention.
personally, vision will help mimic human driving as we only use our eyes & brains. in the future (say 20-30 years), it won't matter once all cars are autonomous. "Autonomous driving" is only difficult to accomplish because there are human (unpredictable) drivers. once all cars are autonomous, vision isn't really necessary. but atm, i would say some radar would help in cases of vision impairment.
Its amazing that eventually we should be able to almost eliminate accidents one day and rid the community of tragic accidents and the impact they have on people's lives - I really cannot understand why anyone would be against this kind of technology and for anyone who thinks they will always be a better driver - well guess what - your not !
9:10 the car did not figure it out. There was a human intervention to make sure the car did the right thing. There are a quite a few of human interventions in waymo rides where the car gives up control to a remote human.
Great video, Kim and PJ! One observation: Elon does NOT land rockets on a barge, SpaceX engineers do that. In fact, Tesla engineers told Elon NOT to get rid of radar. They were right, he was wrong.
did you select multiple stops for a single ride to see some of the sites in SF? If so, do you just press continue to next stop without having to get out of car? or could u get out for a minute and get back in to continue to next stop?
Hahah😂 when Tesla wants to do level 4 and take responsibility we'll see what restrictions the Tesla car will have that is if it can pass regulation and approval for a ride hailing.
That is incorrect. Remote assistance does not control the vehicle, it only gives the car suggestions, the car uses the suggestions to get unstuck on its own. The car stays in autonomous mode the entire time.
Without knowing about what is happening in the back office of Waymo on these rides, there is little reason to be impressed. Given these are UA-camrs, Waymo could easily have ensured a person was monitoring the ride 100% of the time. KJ didn’t actually explain how they got the app so quickly when there is a backlog.
I wonder if Tesla will consider adding extra sensors for their robo taxi fleet like Waymo uses, versus if Tesla wants to keep it looking like a normal car.
Tesla and Waymo are quite different in their approach. With so many teslas around, it would be cool to see the cars talking to each other in real time to suplement their sensors.
Telsa isn't likely to consider that because those sensors cost a few hundred thousand dollars per vehicle. That means Waymo's solution is a cool research project, but it isn't economically viable as a business model. I really don't see how Waymo ever expands beyond a couple dozen carefully selected markets at most unless they change their approach.
@@CL-gq3noI disagree, HD mapping difficulty and Sensor prices have been decreasing over the last decade. In theory a car can update the HD map on its own. Companies such as Mobileye are looking to do this in the next two years.
But you do realize Waymo uses cameras just like Tesla does, right? The LiDAR is just an extra sensor for detecting 3D objects. Still need the cameras to determine what the objects are.
It is NOT driverless. Waymo has many support people ready to remotely take over when the car has issues. You experienced that when the car got stuck in the intersection (9:39 "Our team is working on it"). It was remotely taken over, and fixed the situation and got you on your way. What Tesla is doing will not need any human intervention. Through AI it will figure it out on it's on. You were so glowing about this experience it feels like you were paid. In a way you were, bc you admitted all your rides were free. What else were you given?
Nice to see another sampling of where another self driving tech is at. I am still guessing this is years away from going mainstream. Waymo is working in a very focused area and the human helpers remotely keep it going. While impressed to see where they are at, not blown away. When Waymo lets you go where ever and figures things out on their own without human aids remotely dropping in, then I will be impressed. I look forward to the first lap of America done with no driver happening. Start in San Diego and end at Disneyland after going to Florida, up to Boston, and over to Seattle. That would be the test that would show which tech is truly ready or if it is ready.
If you truly understand how computers work, you would really know that this is amazingly good. So so so good so it is ridiculous. What you want will not happen for decades, and it may even be impossible.
Anytime I watch a video done in the California area, I always just have to laugh to myself at the sheer amount of Tesla's. Every way you look and every corner you take, there Always seems to be at LEAST one Tesla. SO AWWESOME. This video was so awesome. Getting your take on it considering you are an all Tesla family. A very fun review of this technology. Great video.
Similar across the lake from Seattle. I was the 2nd Tesla on my block, first M3. Now there are 3 M3’s, 3-4 MY’s and a couple MS’s. There is a Rivian a few blocks over.
I am so glad to see Kim questioning Musk. Nobody is 100% right all the time, and let’s not forget, Musk isn’t doing the rockets, he funded the engineers to do it. He’s smart for sure, great coder, not taking anything away.. the dude has huge balls but he can and absolutely is wrong! Sensor fusion is how computers work, they can’t intuit like us, they need data. Tesla needs laser, radar, sonar AND vision blended to mix with AI. Waymo shows Tesla how it’s done.
Lived in SF for over a decade, throughout the entire tech boom. As crazy as it may seem, SF driving is actually very predictable and straightforward. Design of roads and lanes are really good overall. Try Austin or somewhere else.
Our upcoming child will grow up in a world where this will be normal. He or she will not think twice about taking this type of transportation. In fact, it will be a foreign experience to take a human driven taxi.
I'd be p.o.ed if I had to live in SanFrancisco, or California in general lol. The prices are out of this world! That said people seem to be very angry these days even in the midwest where I reside.
I have some questions… The rides are fairly impressive but outside of robo taxis in their fenced areas (which, to date, are a money losing proposition) what are the use cases. It will be prohibitively expensive to outfit a car like this for consumers with all of their sensors; and the limited geographic areas make it not so useful for trips. Where does this leave Waymo?
It probably leaves them in a handful of heavily populated US markets trying to break even. They have been at this for more than 20 years now. On one hand it is very cool to see what they have accomplished, but on the other hand it doesn't seem like a model that can be scaled up. I think Waymo will continue to be a research project for years to come.
Do you mean 14:56? They are three wheeled autocycles that you can rent to tour the city in. Look up Go Car Tours San Francisco and you can read about them. They look really fun.
It seems like the 2FA Security needs to be implemented on the Waymo app. What happens if you close your phone and someone gets a hold of the phone and uses Waymo endlessly resulting in excessive credit card charges for the user?
If 2fa is on it will go to the phone they stole anyway, and since you'd be hard pressed to get into their phone, you'd not get far. I do think EVERY online account does need 2fa though.
I wonder if there is a way to truly know if it was self driving. I know they have the ability to drive it remotely if the car gets in a hairy situation which seems like it happened a few times when the computer got stuck and then all of a sudden it figured it out and made a human like maneuver, LOL.
They can not drive it manually but they can give the car options and then it will drive by itself. So for instance, the car might call home and say "Help. Where do i go? This or that?" and the operator "That" and then it goes.

Cool video and we'll done, very informing.
Very good video. I did not know that Waymo had developed this far. When traveling west, I will definitely try it out. Again thanks for the video_
Please teview the new prius or prius prime.
Seems quite good in Phoenix/ San Francisco. Not sure about the driving around cars stopped in traffic. Queue jumping would not be tolerated in Europe. And it all seems like it is run in slow motion. City traffic would grind to a halt like this.
Very cool. Lots of nice touches.
"Autonomous driving" is only difficult to accomplish because there are human (unpredictable) drivers. once all cars are autonomous, vision isn't really necessary. but atm, i would say some radar would help in cases of vision impairment.
thank you. I think Waymo like vehicles will replace taxi's in cities but it will be a long time before you can go from city to city or state to state.
Taxis won't be used between cities. That's what busses are for
Its amazing that eventually we should be able to almost eliminate accidents one day and rid the community of tragic accidents and the impact they have on people's lives - I really cannot understand why anyone would be against this kind of technology and for anyone who thinks they will always be a better driver - well guess what - your not !
9:10 the car did not figure it out. There was a human intervention to make sure the car did the right thing. There are a quite a few of human interventions in waymo rides where the car gives up control to a remote human.
This
"The car is driving super well..." because it is in a geo fenced area.
That car that you was looking at was a cruise driverless car as well
Lidar is the way to go. Costs will drop over time even as the technology improves.
Awesome video. This is our future!
I don’t miss the driver making useless small talk. 😊
Thank you for this video.
Interesting to see how would it survive gloomy weather like heavy rain or even light snow
Great video, Kim and PJ! One observation: Elon does NOT land rockets on a barge, SpaceX engineers do that. In fact, Tesla engineers told Elon NOT to get rid of radar. They were right, he was wrong.
Kim doing shopping but can’t, happy husband ….lol…. 😂 I get you man
This is very cool!
did you select multiple stops for a single ride to see some of the sites in SF? If so, do you just press continue to next stop without having to get out of car? or could u get out for a minute and get back in to continue to next stop?
The whole point of autonomy is that you don't have to apologize.
This car is geofenced …so it’s extremely limited as to where it can go. Tesla is not so restricted. Big big difference boys and girls.
Hahah😂 when Tesla wants to do level 4 and take responsibility we'll see what restrictions the Tesla car will have that is if it can pass regulation and approval for a ride hailing.
The car did not get itself unstuck. A human took control and told it what to do remotely.
You might be right
Lol😂 And you know that, HOW?
@@anthonyscott5134because that’s how it works. Google. U you.
@@anthonyscott5134that’s how it works. But to be fair it was only little human input.
That is incorrect. Remote assistance does not control the vehicle, it only gives the car suggestions, the car uses the suggestions to get unstuck on its own. The car stays in autonomous mode the entire time.
It almost looks like there is someone in the Waymo headquarters, doing the drive remotely, it's not mechanical at all.
Final thoughts, Kim? Overall, how does this compare to Tesla's FSD? Which of the two do you think would do a better job in heavy rain, fog, or snow?
LMAO are you serious.
Point proven@@davidmartinez9804
Without knowing about what is happening in the back office of Waymo on these rides, there is little reason to be impressed. Given these are UA-camrs, Waymo could easily have ensured a person was monitoring the ride 100% of the time. KJ didn’t actually explain how they got the app so quickly when there is a backlog.
It does not work like that. This actually work, for real, and they work good. Of course not perfect but nothing in this world i perfect.
It could be a conspiracy. A “set up” if you will. As some would say “smoke and mirrors.”
Waymo take me to Berkeley. I’m sorry Dave I can’t do that.
I wonder if Tesla will consider adding extra sensors for their robo taxi fleet like Waymo uses, versus if Tesla wants to keep it looking like a normal car.
Tesla wants to keep the sensor cost low.
Companies such as Mobileye are looking to do this in the next two years.
nicely done!
But you do realize Waymo uses cameras just like Tesla does, right? The LiDAR is just an extra sensor for detecting 3D objects. Still need the cameras to determine what the objects are.
Yes!!! It is a great system. Much better than the bs Tesla is doing.
@@bruh-tq2pw The Tesla system is a far more elegant solution. Lidar is going to prove a fools errand.
@@thewatcher5822 lmao, your theory is proved more wrong every day.
@@bruh-tq2pw Please explain why? From what I am seeing from V12 of FSD. Tesla have solved self driving and are set to dominate.
@@thewatcher5822 I feel like we have already had this argument and you said the same talking points and slogans.
Hey, at least you didn't have to tip Waymo.
Thanks for showing us. What was cost of each ride? Or was it free?
Free rn but it shows that it’ll be almost identical to other ride share
Nothing is free
with elon mode, tesla will give Waymo the run for its money. walrus mode is optional
This is exiting - until CRASH ...
This is a fantastic video
Waymo take me to Daly city.
I’m sorry Dave I can’t do that.
@ItsKimJava What is the Yellow 3 wheeled vehicle at 17 minute?
You should have told support about the angry man situation when they chimed in so they can try to prevent it is what i would have done.
Awesome video !
@@georgew8586 that's soooo cool. Congrats!!!
I'm glad too
Absolutely not. Tesla is set to dominate in this space because it has the most elegant solution. IMO Tesla hold all the aces.
Lived in SF for over a decade, throughout the entire tech boom. As crazy as it may seem, SF driving is actually very predictable and straightforward. Design of roads and lanes are really good overall. Try Austin or somewhere else.
Cruise already launched their operations in Austin.
Not your car, but keep in mind that you are in control of when the vehicle leaves the resident's entrance.
Our upcoming child will grow up in a world where this will be normal. He or she will not think twice about taking this type of transportation. In fact, it will be a foreign experience to take a human driven taxi.
one question while you were in fron right (paseenger seat) can you ajust the air condition
Yes
Wow very cool
I'd be p.o.ed if I had to live in SanFrancisco, or California in general lol. The prices are out of this world! That said people seem to be very angry these days even in the midwest where I reside.
This feels like an advertisement for Waymo
Sorry you feel that way, but hey, if Waymo is interested…you know where to find us. 😂
……my heart you have won
Kim, maybe it drives like a human because some human is actually driving it, remotely from some office so it’s not really autonomous?
Awesome video 👍
What was that little yellow car in the background at 16:56?
Do you mean 14:56? They are three wheeled autocycles that you can rent to tour the city in. Look up Go Car Tours San Francisco and you can read about them. They look really fun.
It is not hard when u mapped everything and have a million miles into the same spot with a billion sensor.
So easy, everyone’s doing it.
Can you get those wheel covers in Europe?
yes I believe
@@ItsKimJavayou are so sexy
I trust YOUR OPINON.
@@rickkay9548 not if the thumb print authentication is implemented
Ask Waymo for a refund. It's not like they don't have video proof of who is in the car.
What happens if the passenger gets seriously hurt?
Lidar is bulky and expensive. If you want a beautiful car, it can’t be a car with Lidar units all over the car.
Waymo is looking impressive this is next level tech. WOW!
