I caution against comparing the waiting time of Waymo to Uber. Uber always systematically underestimates the wait time to trap you into reserving a car, and there is always a nonzero probability of your driver unilaterally canceling or getting lost, none of which are risks on Waymo.
With the issues in SF it's a great idea not to take your own car into the city. I like parking just outside of cities like DC and NYC and taking the train. It's so much less of a hassle.
if in the Bay Area , dont bother w/ car rental (thieves break into car) take Public Transit.
This is Waymo better than Tesla …Waymo.

DAVE - the SF muni Street cars are FASTER than Waymo, Uber/Lift and drop you off @ California ST.
I can Ride the Street cars UNLIMITED 7 - days per week for $25/month for 30 days.
I can ride from Fishermans Wharf , all along MARKET street and ends @ CASTRO.
I can use SAME pass for Muni METRO and all muni BUSES , cable car is EXTRA.
TRANSVBAY Bart goes to OAKLAND Airport & SFO.
Waymo is cool. I hope robotaxis come out to compete soon. Made me laugh with the chili oil. It is tasty but slightly spicy. Gotta love the foody adventures.

I agree on the Tesla in Traffic accelerating too fast and jerky. This is not good for the occupants or the car.
then YOU haven't used TESLA FSD v12.5 on a HW4 car.

The latest Tesla FSD is amazing! You’d be shocked how good it is. I use it for all my drives and it can go anywhere! New roads, construction, highways, everything! It does it all. Waymo is good, but extremely limited and expensive! Tesla FSD vision only is the future.
The problem with tesla fsd is that its also limited to usa. Here in australia the car can only self drive on highways but not anywhere else.
FSD is very dangerous on rainy/snowy/foggy conditions.

@@h-e-acc it would be a massive jump from the 12.4 I saw a little while ago. FSD struggles in parking lots and accelerates way too fast coming out of a intersection
"The future is now..." but with Waymo, it's severely geofenced, it only works on certain roads and not highways AFAICT with the big wind-resistant cancerous growths all over it.
Dave is wrong: this is level 4, not 5, self-driving, and there's a person in a lab to take over if needed.
Also, I'd bet money that all those Waymos will be gone in five years because they're very unprofitable and Tesla will just take over the market. A Tesla will do it on any public road in the US, and a lot of private ones too, it will do highways if that's best, and it doesn't need the ridiculous growths all over it.

You are correct about this being level 4: apologies. As far as Tesla goes, can’t wait to see what they have in store for us on 10/10. Imagine the same level of hands free autonomy and not being geofenced? I have seen a glimpse of the possibilities that potentially await us with Tesla FSD by taking a ride in the Waymo. Hopefully, Tesla’s feature set will evolve into its namesake and become level 4 as well while looking like a completely normal car
DAVE - you Dont know what a GPS puck is ? , its 1980's Technology.
various MAPING companies use GPS in cars , that are added on to Existing TECH , often outdated ICE Technology.
they ALL should just use TESLA , far Cheaper to operate.

Waymo is not even PROFITABLE , too high Maintenance & Repairs.

They can drive ANYWHERE you drop a pin, even drive OFF ROAD.

Welcome to Waymo one world! This is a real deal in the real world of L4 level autonomous driving. Even though it is geofenced, but it shows how Waymo is progressing quietly. I am a Tesla FSD fan, but I know it has a long way to go to reach Waymo current L4 Level.
Any tech company can do L4 in a geofence box with lidar and the help of google maps, the problem is that it will never profitable like this. One of these cars cost over $110,000 with the sensors. Google is losing billions on this venture at the moment.
@@AntTurnerany tech company can do L4? Would you please name one company name that is doing L4 autonomous (riders only) driving robo-taxi in US commercially? I don’t know how did you get $110000 per vehicle price tag. Even with this price, the cost can be recovered from robo-taxi running about one year at around $2/mile charge for the taxi riding.
TESLA robotaxi is only $1 per mile.

My wife and I visited SF for our 40th in the middle of August. I'm a big FSD fan. Her? She'd prefer horse & buggy. But I talked her in to two Waymo rides, to and from Fisherman's Wharf, and it converted her. I was as giddy as a 6 yo at Christmas riding in that comfortable back seat. My wife was quickly amazed and then totally relaxed by that calming Tai-chi type music playing softly inside. It was the future, Dave, like you repeated several times (I did the same thing) and you were sitting right in it for that 9 minute drive.
but , $30 Waymo rides are a SCAM , they use remote drivers.
Very cool! I was also surprised at the reasonable traffic condition is SF. Last time I was there it was terrible.
People seem to forget about our winters up here in Canada and the northern US states that get a crap ton of snow in the winter. This technology would never be reliable enough during heavy snow storms. When you cant see the road markings or let along were the road even is this tech will kill you drive you off a cliff.

You’re right about autopilot, obvious stop and go traffic and the car takes off just to hard brake a few seconds later.
try FSD v12.5 , much improvement.

It's pretty cool and I would definitely use it! I always feel a little weird in someones Uber. Sometimes they want to talk a lot but I just want to ride lol

Great stuff Dave! I like that transition near 12:08, where it appears you worked in a horizontal-taxi ride to SF General to, you know, extract the raspberry sauce. Also, great idea on where to do the pickup. Since it involves a multi-stop Waymo ride, could you invite Kyle and the gang to fly out and visit a bunch of stops where Waymos in SF had their tires slashed? There are 19 to choose from in the court records. BTW, these are likely centered about the stomping grounds of a 36-year-old woman named Ronaile Joshau Burton. Thanks again!
Hah! Other good stuff is Dave's surprise/confusion over the Waymo signaling to change lanes at 15:28, and Dave's joy to witness a Waymo right turn on red, done with the ease of a longtime SF resident at 15:45.
At 19:30, Dave mentioned that Telsa FSD is not level 5 autonomy. True, that is presently level 3. But your point there sounded like Waymos are level 5. In fact, Waymos are presently level 4, which means they are fully autonomous in a limited set of conditions. To your credit, you pointed out that limited driving domain in a bunch of ways. In other words, Waymos operate at level 4 and not level 5.
Interesting point on the pets at 23:55. Could Kyle test that as well? I'm pondering an English bulldog in that middle back seat wearing a Polo shirt, glasses, and wig. Are the neural nets in the trunk or the remote support using the ceiling cam really going to spot Spot? I'm thinking no.
Not surprised you went with the Uber to get back for the debate. A tip for tourists is to go for the multi-stop trip ending where they started. That gets it down to just one 30-min wait. Just don't push it on that stop time of just 5 mins! It's really just enough to jump out for a photo before they jump back in.
I mean I’ve been in that area on lunar new year and there are huge crowds and firecrackers going off everywhere. You don’t want to try to drive through, it will really tick off the crowd.
Streets are BLOCKED off , when Chinatown have events.
