This is such a great tutorial for beginners! I've come through a lot of other videos and got really overwhelmed with the pace and lack of clarity but you explain everything so slowly and precisely that I got it the first try! Thank you so much, you're an amazing teacher! ❤

Agreed. Even if they didn't agree with all of the techniques shown (or whatever), someone went out of their way (in many cases) to design something nice and take the time to share it with us. If they don't appreciate that, they should just move on.

I first learned knitting many years ago (my mother taught me basic knitting when I was still a child); but somehow had trouble with crocheting. I used to often drop stitches on the ends of my projects, because with crochet the edges were sort of "rounded off" (maybe I forgot to "chain up" for the next row?); and it was hard to tell where the rows began and ended--whereas with knitting, all of the stitches are right there on the needle, easily countable and not-so-easily lost (well, unless they accidentally slip off the tip, which is aggravating; but I digress).
But now as an adult, I recognize that crocheting is *Sooooo* Much Faster!! Plus only working with the one short(er) needle (and just one, or a few stitches at a time), crocheted projects are much easier to shape (for non-rectangular designs); and for larger projects such as afghans. In my experience, the only real advantage knitting has over crochet is that the resulting fabric is more elastic, with a tighter "weave" that is more difficult to obtain with crochet.
My mother's favorite project was a chevron-patterned afghan that she used to crochet as gifts for friends and family. I'm here because I want to get back into both knitting and crocheting; and hopefully get past the long-standing "roadblocks" (like misshapen purl stitches) that have been holding me back from completing all but the simplest designed projects.

I actually tried knitting first before crocheting, and I keep doing my knit so tight, not to mention the needle I used wasn't really good in quality, so I gave up and moved on to crocheting. But the result of knitting is really good though, so I might try again someday with this tutorial 😂

I have recently learned how to knit and I have tried a couple of different ways and there is a titular video that says "continental knitting is for crocheters", you could get a lot of good help there. Also learn how to English purl for those vast rows where you have to purl all the way back over. There is also one video I found that shows how to "reverse knit", which is a good imitation of a purl, that according to master knitter Roxanne on let's purl together channel, whose video it is, "it does not replace a true purl where a purl is called for in particular pattern designs but it will do well for those vast spanses that called for you to purl". In case you're wondering why I'm picking on the purl... purling is knitting the back side of a knit stitch from the front so that it looks like the back. Purl is the back side of a knit stitch, only you're doing it from the front facing it on the back side of your work because you have knit down one stick and now you have to do the other side. Many basic just the Norwegian purl but it's a lot of winding around and it's hard to do and you can loose your tension and have wonky spaces between your stitches that change. Believe me it is possible to learn how to purl stitch incontinental style by employing your thumb rather than your middle finger the way most people will show, I have seen Russian women do it while crocheting cotton and all in a traditional way instead of the Russian way which changes the orientation of your stitches to Eastern instead of Western. I have found that if I Russian purl I also have to do the Russian "grandma way" of knitting on the back side of my needles - which is not a problem. Just different than the typical way anyone in North America would teach. If you do regular continental knit stitch the right leg of the loop is always in front of the stick/needle which is Western: If you do Russian purl, it changes the orientation and puts the left leg forward, which is Eastern... which is why you have to do the knit stitch on the back of your needles. This is the easiest kind of knitting in the world! The way you do each stitch Enters the right hand side of the loop and is mirrored by the way you do the opposite stitch and the coolest thing about it is when you do whichever stitch it rotates the orientation from east to west And so it's always the way it should be. This probably changes if you're doing a rib stitch but with whichever orientation you are working on in your following row you always must work whatever type of stitch according to the orientation that it is in at the moment in the way it was work before you can switch from Eastern to Western as long as you always remember that. And none of this may make sense if you've never done any of the things that I've described here but you will understand it if you do.

I have started this project many times over and endeavoring to make myself stitch not so tight. I'm getting there. Now I am wondering, while going over the pattern. When I knit one do I loop over or do I loop under like you do, or does it make a difference? Thanks so much for all the patterns. Hi!
I was wondering how long does a scarf have to be? I am knitting a scarf that is about 30 inches

    • @nostalkingzone
      @nostalkingzone 3 роки тому +2

It should be at least twice that long for a regular scarf. I thought she said 70"; which is almost six feet.
If you have a thirty-inch rectangular piece, you could adapt it into a neck-warmer (not sure what they're called, but they can be worn tucked inside a coat for a "sweater" effect). Wrap it around neck (careful not to twist), folding the top edge back along the top back of neck and inside edges; then bringing the short edges even in the front, overlap them and knit-sew them together. I've seen these on Pinterest, with added coat-style buttons as decoration ("mock-button"); or real-working buttons, if you have the knitting skill to make buttonholes.
I'm thinking though that you might need a few more inches on the length of your project even for this. But it's an alternative if you didn't want to spend that much time knitting; or have run short on yarn.

Can I use stockinette stitch for the infinity scarf?

You *Can*; but be aware of this: Stockinette "curls" at the sides. :( Also it's a lot thinner than the garter stitch (the alternately-spaced "ribs" on both sides of the garter stitch seem to act as insulation).
To make it in stockinette, you might want to knit it twice as wide, plus a seam allowance; and then when you are finished fold it over lengthwise ("right" knit sides together), sew it lengthwise (and on one end), turn it right-side out and then finish the end (i.e., make it double-layer). It's a lot of hassle; but otherwise you may have a curling "tube" of knitting that refuses to lay flat.
Another thing you can try is to knit garter stitch for a small "border" on each side and on both ends, to help it to lay flat. As you might have deduced, however, either of these solutions sort of makes the scarf into a different, more advanced project than the one presented here. My problem with stockinette is that my purl stitches are looser than I'd like (and uneven on one side) than my regular knit stitches; but your mileage may vary.
I think this is why most scarf patterns I've seen are either garter stitch or use a "ribbed" pattern (reverse stockinette stitch; or 2-stitch rib). I once made a 4-stitch rib scarf that turned out delightfully soft, warm and "elastic" (after all, that's why rib stitches are often used at the sleeves, waist and necklines of sweaters!); but I wound up having to add almost an extra third to the stitch count to compensate for the "pulling in" effect. :) Of course it was more challenging and took longer to complete than this project demonstrated here; but the softness, extra warmth and more finished-looking results were quite satisfying. :)

You can use any needle or yarn you just need to look at the packaging of the yarn to see what needles are needed

What size is printed on them? Maybe you have a size 9 (5.5 mm) instead of size 13 (9 _mm_ )? :)
