This is a wonderful video and got me knitting in no time! A few tips based on my personal experience.... 1) Use needles at least this big or bigger. I started out with smaller ones and it was way more difficult 2) Use white or light-colored yarn. I was using black at first and it was impossible to see what was going on 3) Loosen up! I was knitting so so tight at first, I could barely push the needle through. I think this channel has another video about tight knitting, but the main thing that helped me was making sure I wasn't knitting on the tips of the needles. Drag every stitch down the needle a bit so it's sitting on the widest point.
I recently got into the idea that i want to knit for my anxiety and ive watched countless "beginner" videos. This one is so perfect i actually understand what youre doing and why and i cannot wait to do this tomorrow! Thank you so much!!
Hey Mercy! I would start with this video. It goes through the basics of knitting: the cast on, the cast off and the knit stitch. With these three skills, you can make your first scarf! This is the project that most new knitters will start with. As for materials, you'll need yarn, needles and your own two hands! Head to your local craft store and choose a yarn that you like. I recommend a chunky weight yarn because it's easier to work with. Then, look at the yarn's label. It will give you a recommended needle size. Choose a pair of needles within this range. I go into more detail about this here: sheepandstitch.com/how-to-knit-a-scarf-for-beginners/ and also in the video at the 00:32 mark. Hope this helps! Excited for your knitting journey!
+Sheep & Stitch thank you so much I plan to use your videos for practice but my best friend and favorite high school teacher will be the ones teaching me first hand how to knit. I'm very excited and thank you for the information. I hope to be able to tell you how my journey goes as I go along.

Started knitting with my 8 year old yesterday! We both learned to cast on and started the knit stitch. I am so proud of my 8 year old’s enthusiasm. Today we wanted to actually make something so this is our first project. Love how you’ve made it so clear and simple to follow. Can’t wait to finish the scarf now! We were supposed to go out for dinner but both us don’t wanna leave because we are busy knitting out first scarf! Thank you 😊
Hello Devina, thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. I completed my first knit scarf around 7 ft long with the help of your video. And for someone who had never held knitting needles and yarn in her hands, my scarf turned out to be just perfect. All thanks to you. You made it so easy for me. And it’s not only in how you teach the technique, but you also address the nervousness a first time knitter faces through your brilliantly put up video. Thanks 😍
This is by far the best tutorial yet! I’ll admit- it took me awhile before I got the hang of it, but when I did, I got really excited- sort of like a new world was opened up for me. I’m really excited to see how my first scarf will turn out!
Currently finishing my first chunky scarf, started completely from scratch 4 days ago and let me tell you: big needles and thick yarn makes ALL the difference for beginners. I tried learning knitting before with thin needles and yarn and simply couldn't learn, specially the knit stitch. Once I learned it in the thick yarn I could do easily on the thin needle and yarn. This video was literally the most helpful one I watched.
This tutorial was super helpful for complete for time knitter! I watched a few others first and just about gave up. This video, along with her other ones about common knitting mistakes and adding new yarn are the most helpful out there!

Hi! I wondering, if the yarn is already finished but we haven’t finish our scarf yet, how should i continue? Btw, great tutorial! It’s very clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Here’s a great tip for all new knitters. I ended up using multi coloured yarn. With size 10 bamboo. The multi colours i found really helped in seeing any potential mistakes and if I accidentally dropped a stitch I easily picked it up again. Because each row was a different shade or colour. If I used a one colour yarn I wouldn’t of been able to see it. The wood also stops slipping.
I really appreciate that you went through all the steps more than once, I keep spacing out so it helps a lot when I finally zone back in and you're repeating the step I zoned out on!
Sheep & Stitch Hey there! I’m trying out knitting because you’re video interested me so much :). But I’m running into a problem, the yarn between my two needles keeps on getting longer and longer each stitch. Can you help me out somehow? I would love it, thanks!
Cate Cornia Hey there! I’m (unfortunately) not Sheep & Stitch, but remember to tug on the yarn that’s connected to your ball of yarn every time you make another stitch, and when making your first row, remember to be consistent with the amount of space in between your knots. Another tip is to make sure that your knitting is all lined up and not in a twist. ♥️

lorialdr I literally just watched a video before this that showed how to fix a loose stitch. You will need a crochet needle to loop the loose stitch and place it back on the needle.
I used to knit but I’ve been on a several year crochet only hiatus. So when I decided to make a scarf for a gift I got out my yarn and needles and realized I forgot how to cast on. This is one of the best tutorials for making a scarf - anyone can follow her tutorials, they are some of the best
I (38) wanted to help my 9 yo son make something for my wife for her birthday, he wanted to make a scarf. So we learned to knit. He said this is something old grannies probably do, but now we do it too!! Thanks for the perfect tutorial ❤️
*me, an asian who lives in the tropics:*

O my gosh!! I've been struggling with my knitting for so many weeks now, and I just watched this and have managed to do 5 rows!! So proud of myself, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this video I swear to God. So many others on UA-cam haven't helped me at all and with this one I got it in about 10 minutes!!! Thank you!!!
I haven’t knit in 8 years. I was so worried I’d forgotten everything. This video was incredible! So easy to follow. And now I’m happily knitting again.
That’s great to hear! I’ve made a newer “how to knit” series here: ua-cam.com/play/PLSZARCc5KSoRQGQY3LfbBgkxXsZEq2r2_.html that breaks down the steps into individual videos. Might be helpful too!
This the most informative beginner class I have ever taken. I have been knitting for years but I struggled at the beginning trying to get techniques down. You have made this so simple and I learned an easier way to cast on my stitches. Thank you!
Fantastic , you just gave me the need to knit , 38 years ago my aunty helped me to knit a scarf , I just bought a set of needles 2 days ago , time for scarf number 2 , this time round you will be my aunty .
Very well explained. I'm just going to start knitting for the first time ever in my life and this video is one of the best I found on UA-cam. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a beginner to knitting and I've knit two scarves so far with help from this tutorial!!! I'm still working out all the kinks and dealing with mistakes but I couldn't have made it this far without your help! Thank you!!! :-)
This is the best knitting tutorial video I’ve found! She actually says the problems that can happen when knitting and then says how to fix them. And she also says different methods for some people, like, lady, thank you so much! Please make more videos like this! ❤❤❤
Recently got back into knitting after more than 12 years. And this tutorial definitely helped so much. Made a beautiful scarf for me niece 🥰
Me too! Been just under 11 years and now back to completing a scarf I believe I started in 2012 😆
Thank you so much for this tutorial! 💙
I'M SO EXCITED TO KNIT MY FIRST SCARF!!! GOING TO GET THE STUFF WITH MY SIS IN A FEW WOOOO
I have searched too long for a tutorial like this one! It's step-by-step, easy to understand, and tells me where to buy yarn online! After watching this, I'll be knitting for days! Thank you so much!
YOU are an amazing woman! To take the time and be kind enough to share your talents, with the rest of us. I am envious of your ability to make it look, so effortless! I'm grateful to have been able to learn from someone, like you! Thanks, Davina...!
Wow what kind words! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch 🤗
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this clip
I’ve got arthritis and have never succeeded with knitting before
Followed you clip and am very pleased with my scarf😀
Hello Devina, thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. I completed my first knit scarf around 7 ft long with the help of your video. And for someone who had never held knitting needles and yarn in her hands, my scarf turned out to be just perfect. All thanks to you. You made it so easy for me.
And it’s not only in how you teach the technique, but you also address the nervousness a first time knitter faces through your brilliantly put up video.
Thanks 😍
Hey!
How long did it take you?
I've just finished my first knitted scarf. It's my first time ever knitting. Thank you ma'am for this tutorial.
this is the first tutorial that i understood and didn’t have me on the verge of tears so thank you
I tried knitting for the 1st time and this video really helped me out. You are a really good teacher!!
I just started doing crochet and have always wanted to learn how to knit but have always been intimidated by it! This video was so helpful! I will definitely pick up some knitting supplies tomorrow and get started!! Thank you for this amazing tutorial!!
Have never knit. Followed this guide and now I have a great warm scarf for my gf. Thanks so much!!!
I'm completely new to knitting! I've always had an interest but never been able to, until today ♡ yours is the first tutorial I've seen and it's so so easy to follow, thank you so much ! I cant wait to finish
Thank you so much for this tutorial, i knit my first scarf with no experience and turn out great!
I’m so proud of myself with my merino wool scarf, I thought that knit was impossible to my but it’s only matter of trying.
I appreciate the slipped selvedge hint. This was the only video of several beginner ones to include that information. Nice, slow, clear instructions!
This was the first thing I ever tried to knit - I just finished my second beanie and I'm working on a cable-knit scarf for my mum.
Thank you for making knitting easy, for me and others
This video is everything! I am actually knitting my first scarf. I've never knitted before in my life. It looks so good. Thank you so much for this video!
She is literally the best tutorial maker I've ever seen. Thank you for teaching me how to knit🙏
flip the me and we 🤓
Your communication and teaching skills are beyond this world! Just finished my scarf, my first knitting project ever and I literally wanna cry (of joy)
Congrats ❤❤ can tou please tell me how long did it take for you to finish 🥹 i want to do it badly
@@mafazchan6817 thanks 💖💖 It was my first knitting project ever and it was a year ago already, so probably longer than the expected. It depends on how many hours a day you'd work on it, the lenght etc. but this is something you could do in less than a week for sure
@@luna_robot wow 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️ thanks for the information, have a great day/ night ❤️❤️
I just finished my scarf and it came out so great!! Thank you for this awesome video!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
42yr old guy making a Christmas scarf for my wife and this is great!! Thank you for posting.
I followed this tutorial and I finished the scarf. It was my first time knitting ever, and your tutorial helped so much. I made it as a gift for my boyfriend for our 5 year anniversary. thank you so much you made it a piece of cake.
also for people who are wondering how long it takes, it took me 3 days.
By far the best knitting scarf for beginner video.
The pace and instructions were perfect, explanation was very clear and slow., and I like the repeats of steps.
Thank you so much! I'm really looking forward to this project :)

came here to learn how to knit in quarantine, hope it goes well. thank God this tutorial was as clear as a crystal!
As someone who’s very first knitting tutorial was this video, thank you. I’ve left knitting for crocheting since I find crocheting much more enjoyable and gives you freedom to do so many more projects I thank you for shooting me on the journey bc if I never learned to knit I would’ve never learned to crochet
I made a very very very nice scarf with this tutorial and I love how easy it was to follow. :)
Awesome to hear that! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy your scarf

Thank you! I used this video to complete my first knitting project! I ran out of yarn and made and infinity scarf by weaving the two ends together but it still turned out so well! Thanks again for making such a clear helpful video, this was my favorite of all the beginning knitting ones I looked for
Awesome! I’m glad it turned out well for you!
I agree with all the lovely comments. For me I struggled knitting even when my mum and nan tried showing me, watching your hints and tips I'm knitting much to my surprise about to add 2nd ball of wool!!! Thankyou
this is the best tutorial out there! TYSM for this! I cannot wait to make tons of scarfs for my family!
did you make some?
Hi! I wondering, if the yarn is already finished but we haven’t finish our scarf yet, how should i continue?
Btw, great tutorial! It’s very clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Get another yarn ball, then tie the ends together so they end up looking like one yarn string and then keep going as you were
I'm just glad that she repeats the simplest steps for people like me
Here’s a great tip for all new knitters.

This is such a great tutorial!! You make it so simple to do and I can’t wait to try this!
The cast on method is the best I’ve seen for a beginner video. THANK YOU.
Omg your tutorials are fabulous...so easy to follow...love love love it...I already crochet but now I'll be able to knit as well.!!😆
You taught me to knit! Thank you!!
I really appreciate that you went through all the steps more than once, I keep spacing out so it helps a lot when I finally zone back in and you're repeating the step I zoned out on!
Me instantly after the first time I see the needle: Oh that’s a thicc needle
Thicc needles for thicc yarn 🍑
@@catec4773 i think you might be adding stitches check out one of davinas wideos about adding stiches
Charlotte Thank you for the advice, but i found out i was just pulling the string too tight instead of letting it be loose. thanks for trying to help!

Thanks so much for reacquainting me with knitting after many, many years 😂 It brought back happy memories of my grandma who taught me to knit and your instructions are clear and easy to follow. Am now on my fourth scarf!
I am watching this so i could make one for a friend of mine since he’ll be leaving the country soon and go to UK. I like him ever since we’ve known each other and I confessed to him my feelings but was rejected. 😅 I wanted to give him this as a goodbye and thank you gift. Even though i am hurt by being rejected, i will always love him no matter what. Hope he’ll keep it... 😊 dont get me wrong, we’re in really good terms and very close friend still 😊 Thank you so much for this tutorial! It really helped!
What a nice thing you did for your friend! I hope he realises what a good friend he has in you! Thanks for sharing this story :D

I love how this describes it so well and doesn’t go really fast
Thank you so much!
I wish you showed what to do if you messed up or lost a stitch, how to fix it.
+lorialdr Hey! If you look at the description for the video (right underneath the video, click "Show More") you'll see a section called "Helpful Tips for Beginners." This includes links to more videos that help beginners with common mistakes, like dropping stitches, adding more stitches etc. Hope that helps!
Nolorialdr
lorialdr True I've had to restart more than once :(
lorialdr I literally just watched a video before this that showed how to fix a loose stitch. You will need a crochet needle to loop the loose stitch and place it back on the needle.

I used to knit but I’ve been on a several year crochet only hiatus. So when I decided to make a scarf for a gift I got out my yarn and needles and realized I forgot how to cast on. This video was such a helpful refresher and I’m sure it’s been super useful over the years in getting lots of newbies on their knitting journey. The only thing I wasn’t prepared for when I started was the addiction and the constant need for more and more and more yarn! 🙃
End of the fourth month of my quarantine got me here😂😂.This pandemic should end soon😒😩😩

is there anyway for that to stop happening?
angæl bæby OMG IM REALLY LATE BUT YESSS THAT HAPPENS TO ME TOO
@@exparxa2318 that kept happening to me so I kept with it till the last cast on the needle. Took it off and redid the hook knot closer to the needle that had the thread and then casted it on too xD.
Probably not the right way but it worked for me
Yes, just cast it on the original needle. It still works.
perfect amount of support for beginners, thank you! I had 3 attempts to make it nice and still don't give up because of your support. thank you again!
