4 steps to make funky hihats like Tale of Us or Maceo Plex
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 тра 2024
- In this video we make funky, syncopated hihats in Ableton Live. You'll recognise this style of hihats from artsits like Tale of Us, Maceo Plex, Recondite, Agents of Time, all those deep house/deep techno artists.
We show the secret sauce behind such a hihat line, which comes down to:
- Creating a 16th note hihat pattern using whitenoise
- Applying simple groove to it
- Applying "funky" groove to it
- Setting up macro controls to control its expression

making funky hihats is the best part of making drums for your track
“I’m just gonna give it some groovy colors, coz, we groovy like that” love it
I cant recall how many times i keep revisiting this video
You're welcome every time 🐭

This channel is gold. Clear explanations in plain English, no hype, no BS, great editing. Keep up the great quality I'm sure you'll hit 100K soon, and thanks for creating this!
Haha I certainly hope you're right! Cheers 0xMusic :D
We did it mate 😂🧡🤘
@@OscarUnderdog OMG at that time you had like 5K subs, congrats on your success, you really deserve every bit of it, thanks for spreading high quality knowledge! Keep it up! See you again at 1M subs! Respect!
@@0xLife 😁🧡 thanks for joining me on this journey.
@@OscarUnderdog doubled it and not stopping! LETS GOO
This channel is gold!
Cheeeeeeeers 😁✌
AGREED.
Great content 😎
True
Can't say it better! ❤
Best tutorials for producing on UA-cam
This guy is clearly a master of his craft. So helpful
This may very well be the best production tutorial channel on UA-cam.
This is one of the clearest and best tutorials on this topic I've found. How do you possibly have less than 400 subs!?
I only just started, you're an early adapter!!!😄
@@OscarUnderdog keep up this level of quality and you will match ADSR and Dubspot soon enough.
I’ve only recently discovered the channel myself. Such great content and well explained with relative examples. Especially enjoyed the polyrhythms vid 👍
O
Keep it a secret!
this whole chanel is pure gold, just outstanding
Again I am blown away by an incredibly clear and comprehensible video about something I consider very complicated and intense, creating music, which is why I'll be in your classes soon, Thanks Underdog.
When you have no inspiration for a “groove”, an interesting thing to do is use Velocity MIDI effect, put it to Fixed and random (between 20 and 100 for example), record a long time of hi hats then look for an interesting velocity pattern of 1, 2 or 4 bars
Love that - using curated randomness is a super powerful philosophy.
Great rick also . Thanks.
When you have no inspiration for a "groove" you're in the wrong game. If you don't groove, you don't get house and techno. Stop trying and stick to big room cheese.
@@calebainsworth7247 yes because obviously, every house and techno producer never lack of inspiration.. 🧐
Also this is a tutorial for beginners and/or amateurs... people do not necessarily produce music for other people
@Caleb Ainsworth Everything is learned, even grooves 🙂
why are all oscars i know cool af
This comment arrived at exactly the right time for me, made my absolute day haha 😄 spent the whole weekend showing it to people ❤
I didn't know it's every second note, that's big for making your own and having it change
That's actually incredible how well you've recreated Maceo Plex's sound there in a seemingly straightforward tutorial. Great stuff man!
Everyone is already saying it, but really, thank you for the to-the-point explanations. I've been up to my nuts with overly wordy tutorials.
Seriously, your production vids are absolutely the best here! The way you explain mid and upper level experience teachings in a basic way, not assuming your audience knows all the basics about production. You seem to cater in the videos to people of all levels in a way that’s totally relatable and really incorporate teaching moments. Thank you! I’ll be looking at buying something! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for this 🙏🙏🙏🧡
I’ve learned more about programming drums and percussion in 3 of your tutorials than 100 others put together. 🔥
3:23 sounds like gold. thanks for the idea.
Pure quality. Oscar is a true legend. I've been producing for 15 years and I'm still learning new things and getting new inspiration when watching his videos. Big up! This channel definitely needs more subscribers.
😁❤️ bigup frankfurt
Hey man, I saw your post on Reddit and ended up on your channel. You're doing a great job at explaining and it's nice to listen to, no bullshit. I will check your other content and I'm looking forward to your future posts, good luck!
Appreciate this, thanks for your kind words!
dude this is so exciting, i've been struggling for months to find tutorials like this one, my tracks sounded so stiff and robotic. Cheers!
When UA-cam suggested me your video, I was like "What could I still learn about music?!", and 10 minutes later and with an open mouth I write this comment. Thank you for your amazing lesson!
Haha so cool 😁😁😁
I love his keyboard sound man
Oscar, I cant only say CONGRATULATIONS for such a spectacular collection of video tutorials you are making in this channel. It will be a must for everyone in a few years, time will tell but I'm sure.
new fav youtube channel.
Only came across your channel yesterday and can honestly say you've got some of the most well explained, clear tutorials I've watched. Keep up the good work man.
Cheers Nick :D
14:09 - excellent example of how Maceo Plex creates the groove for Solitary Daze
That velocity was not exaggerated. For me... it was perfect. Love this channel.
Can't wait to use this technique.
I’ve been making music for 15 years and this is a cut above - extremely concise and the theory is all there even in such minimal explanations👌
So niiiiice 🤍
I'm becoming a big fan of these videos. Such clear and straight to the point demos of very handy techniques. I only use hardware and have learned loads, these skills are very easily transferable to gear.
Thanks for such a good strong effort and treat yourself to a well earned pat on the back.
Absolutely insane tutorial mother of god, i have been years producing and have never found a tutorial like this, or even people that I know that produce music that use this, mind blowing
Hahahaha cheers 😂
This is one of the best tutorials I've seen for creating decent groove - thank you!
Simple, effective, good-sounding hats! Thank you
I'm so glad i found you...i like the way you explain...without trying to be clever. Just being a good teacher. Thank you
Thanks for this! I've been looking for ways to achieve this specific sound/effect for a while but couldn't figure out how to search for it - this is a game changer. Really appreciate that you focus on very specific sounds and ideas in each video, rather than doing full track tutorials. This helps me find and learn new tools to use without having to sit through hours of content that isn't relevent to what I'm trying to learn.
I love watching these tutorials. Because they are explained so clearly, the viewer can easily see how these techniques apply to other genres.
Lovely video Oscar, like every other one on this channel
Nice tutorial. Months ago I tried to reverse engineer these 16th white noise hihat grooves myself and I ended up sidechain compressing the hats by the kick. That somehow resembles your level 2 groove. But I must admit that your method is better as it does not require a compressor and offers far more ways to modulate the groove. I love the syncopated groove. Will definitely switch to that.
Also my compliments for this tutorial!
This is a really refreshing tutorial! It's great to go back to basics from time to time and apply new ways of creative expression. Also really well understanding of grooves and such after watching this. Thanks, also thanks for the no bullshit tutorial, just going straight into it, simple yet effective. Came here from reddit, subscribed! Thanks bro!
Thanks for the encouragement, it's super nice to read 😄
Excellent instructional video! I could immediately identify the polyrhythm, but I didn't understand how easily it was created. I thought it was done using specific samples; I didn't even think about doing it the way you show. Thanks!
Groovy 😃
Swing/Shuffle/Groove whatever you may call it is the process in which these measures: 2/16. 4/16 notes for every beat in a bar is moved slightly forward giving it the feel, triplets feel, of those notes being delayed. It this subtle delay that is so pleasing to the ears. If you want to funk that groove even more you can do this by using kick drum ghost notes on these measures to enhance the overall feel of the groove. if i recall correctly on a Akai MPC's the % for that perfect triplet swing was 60%. Thank you for this informative tutorial.
So far this is the best music teaching channel I ever seen. Clear and interesting explanations, real life applications of ideas and sounds, no boring talking, straight facts and info. Love it!
This channel is Diamond!
💎
Отличное видео. Очень просто и ясно всё объяснил. Спасибо.
Love this tutorial, explains in plain English and easy steps. Thanks man, keep up the great work.
Explained in such a clear way, thank you!
Best lessons i’ve come across so far. Clear instructions, good content. Thank u!
superb legendary tutorial thank you Oscar
Awesome Tutorial (Y) Using a Operator to Soundesign own Shakers and Hats is Amazing. Thank you !
You're awesome dude, I use logic and find this easier/better to understand than most logic tutorials. Been watching your other tutorials and they've all been great as well..! Great mixture between breaking down concepts and how to apply them musically and in fun ways/ thanks!
Love it, as always! Killing it with the lessons.
Let's goooooooo
I've never thought about adding macros to my hi hats. That's a really neat and expressive idea. I know that Guy from Disclosure always adds a delay to his Hi Hats which also adds sort of like invisible off the grid groove
Super clean. Great tutorial thank you.
man I just met your videos and you blew my mind, thanks!
Boom, baby 😁
Wicked episode! Thanks Oscar!
Thanks Tomasz :D
We all know this channel is gonna blow up…!
Круто! Вайб, движ, кач!
I am finding your lessons extremely useful. Really well-done content.
Thanks Dougal! I'll keep 'em coming 😁
I have been struggling with the hi-hats in my tunes all my life. Just watched this and tried it all out (in Reason) and everything fell in to place within minutes!
Fantastic. for someone like myself re-introducing themselves to electronic music after a long hiatus, this was clear, concise, easy to understand and fun. thanks for sharing the joy.
My pleasure, happy it connects!
What a legend
This is huge! so glad I found it
Enormous!
Amazing channel! I'm actually learning how to use synthesizers for the first time ever. Goes to show: it's not what you say but the way you say it. Something about Oscar's way of explaining things is really sinking in for me. Great teacher! Thanks Oscar.
Maaan, I would like to give you hug, I'm very thankful for what your doing for all of us 🙌🏽🕉️
Seriously great tutorial! Please keep them coming!
Nice little tutorial.
Served to remind me how much I don't miss software.
I feel this 😂
Just worked out that you can add all manner of effects to this, i.e. a resonator and can change the pitches to the root of the chord to get the hihats singing... pretty nice effect that I'll have to check to see if it works well in my new production. Plenty of ways to make variations on this. Brilliant tutorial.
Or you can rip off the original groove by putting the tale of us song in an audio track and the placing warp markers on every hats of the loop, then right click - extract groove - drag n drop the new file in the groove pool in a midi channel and you got it 👍👍😆
Anyway great video!
Indeed extracting grooves felt like magic when I first did it! But then somehow I never ended up using grooves anymore. It feels like 1 extra layer of invisible complexity that I don't want to manage, if I know pretty much exactly what I want anyway.
As very cool and easy to follow tutorial! both thumps up!
2 years later and still an essential
this was great! easy to understand and useful too -- and I'm glad you quickly mentioned things like "ctrl D" for the duplicate shortcut, it's helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Coming back to making beats after a long hiatus, I wish I'd found this content years ago. It's fantasic. You're seriously an excellent teacher. I'll defintely be planning to take your full course when time allows.
That's what I call a perfect explanation. Thanks ... especially the bit with the polyrythm is great!
Nice video bro!! Thanks for the knowledge
I aim to please ✌
simple... is frighteningly effective!!... thank you
I love the way you explain it all, thanks for sharing!
Excellent tutorial!! Being a drummer I just create the feel I want on my keyboard in real time. I also sometimes use delay to create interesting polyrhythms....not just on Percussion instruments but also on bass or pluck sounds. Either way.....we all create vibes by experimenting. Love this channel!
This content is GOLD! I've never seen such explanation like this, so direct and clear. Thanks for uploading! Just subscribed
This really is one of the best music channels on youtube. Your a great teacher. Ive learned a lot from your videos.
Cheers James :) :)
Man - your content is excellent and always delivered in a clear and understandable way. Just came across your channel a couple of weeks back, by far the best tutorials in UA-cam!!
This is by far the best tutorial on this subject - Simple and easy to understand!
Super sick mate! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Glad you liked it!
No matter how hard we try, the good old silky sizzling hihats cannot be replaced by anything ..But what you re doing is impressive dough.. golden content..💯👌👍
