  • Mesa Engineering Throttle Box EQ pushed/boosted by Boss SD1.. Not so metal Demo...
The red LED light for EQ (ON/OFF indicator) on the high gain mode of the Throttle box stopped working but if it's switched to the right, it means that the EQ is ON.
Note: It took me almost two years to understand how to tweak this pedal. It's a very complicated stompbox. Here are some important things to consider:
*set your tone with your ears not your eyes. Generally, the flat settings on this pedal may be fizzy sounding for some...Like in my case, the very first time I tried this, I thought it was a defective unit (too much treble), it's not. You just got to find the right amp to plug this into. I can say warm sounding amps are good to start with. Even better if it's plugged into a 4x12 cab.
    * this pedal needs to be boosted if you want the tight rectifier metal tone (it may be an OD in front of it or a very hot pickup to push it plus consider using a longer scale guitar like fender or ibanez scale). If not pushed, it may sound fizzy/fuzzy/muddy but depends on a guitarist's preferences..
*If you're not going to push it with an od or compressor, don't hesitate to have the gain at higher settings like 2:30 to even max on the lower gain mode but be reminded that the higher you set the gain, more higher frequencies are produced. So you might want to check again your eq settings.
    * the volume (hi and lo level knobs) adds a little low-mids while turning up or loses some of those mids when turning down. So be careful where you set it. The sweet spot is around 10:00 11:30 of course dependsbon how you set the EQ.
*The tone knob and the 6600 fader on the EQ almost acts like a presence knob....
    * While this may have the rectifier tone/feel to it but it's still sounds like a pedal in real life... (amp distortions are generally (not always) better sounding than distortion pedals)
These are not rules how to use this pedal but (I guess) a good mindset and starting point when tweaking its knobs and faders. Hope this helps to lessen the time understanding this pedal.
    Thanks for watching
*Sucks that they claim that this is built like a tank wherein the red LED light on the hi gain EQ failed on working....

Finally I watched a UA-cam video that did the right thing with the Throtle Box Eq. It really sucks when used alone, but if you push it with an overdrive, it sounds amazing, like the Recto or Mark IV, depending on the Eq settings. I have used the SD-1, TS808 or the Tumnus before and any of them make the Throtle shine!!! Great pedal, when used correctly. Try the reverse smile Eq, emphasizing the mids a little and this beast sings in solos.

Yes. I agree. I love mesa's mids as well. Hehe... I've been a fool for using this on its own for years trying to get usable tones but it's never gonna tighten w/o being pushed by another OD. Just recently that I've realized that.. Also push it with compressor before the OD for even more tightness. I'd try to demo that next..Thanks for the compliment and for watching! 🤘

@@drumthrone10 A have a little pedal's gain collection. It depends. I like all. The ocd and the bb pream sounds more natural (without color). OCD is bit better, the bb pream has more gain), the sd-1 deliver a good middle. IMHO the TS9 has a excellent sound, but these pedal described are better to give more punch and harmonics. The middle's ts9 sound vintage. The trootle box is a mordern distortion...But there's no rules.

I am using the boss angry driver with the Mesa boogie pedal, sounds really sick this way. The way I view the Mesa boogie is more like a pre-amp, it really needs another pedal at the front or at the back to really shine I find. In anycase , great demo!

@@georgesabitpol Yes man. I think it sucks on its own. For several years I'd been using it w/o ods and comps... but when I realized it needs to be pushed or boosted, man I think it sounds even closer to that real recto sound (provided its plugged in a good/warm clean amp)

I’m really curious as to how it would sound going into an Orange Pedal Baby. I’ve been on the lookout for one of these pedals for quite some time and I feel like it would be a really cool preamp pedal to put into a power amp, PA with a cab loader, or an interface for direct recording.

    • @drumthrone10
      @drumthrone10  Рік тому +1

Hey there! I've tried this plugged into a small 30w orange amp. The color of the tone generally warmed-up but the overall feel/character of the pedal is strong and present...
This has that recto tone and feel.. if you're into that, this is a big plus to your rig. Btw, this is a distortion box, not a preamp. It's meant to be plugged in front of a power amp not in the fx return nor direct into an interface unless you have a plug-in amp sim...but, of course you can experiment..
