I can't believe you found this song. This is the saddest song I have ever heard. It really packs a punch. Six foot tall American males are socialized (in the 60s and 70s) not to cry. It projects weakness. Thats all I am going to say.

I'm 61 years old and cry every time I listen to it. Being a true story (watch the live video), and the absolute simplicity of the chorus "I thought you should know", plus just the 2 players with just guitar and harmonica, this song is one of if not the best I've ever heard. The detail of the lyric is transcendental.
I knew it would pull at your hearts as it does mine.

Money cannot buy everything or even guarantee a good life. Her family was wealthy while his wasnt so, in the eyes of everyone around, he would never be good enough for her. In the end everybody lost; he lost her, she lost a chance at something positive, her family lost a child and their pride. I relate to this song on so many levels.

Had a girl in high school that I always admired from afar. Beautiful and I always felt out of reach. Met her again later after school and found out she was an alcoholic all thru high school. Easy sex for a bottle in the back seat of a car was how she described it. She told me the story afterwards and never realized what she did and how she lived. She did get thru it and cleaned up but always wondered how her life ended up. Did she regress or did she find happiness. To this day (50 yrs later) really wish I knew how she turned out and more importantly wish I told her how much I liked her and would have treated her like the princess I always thought she was. Though you should know.

Now you're venturing into maybe the best genre out there as far as music being created in the last 20 years or so; Americana/Outlaw Country. It's kind of an offshoot of traditional country, not like anything you hear on contemporary country music stations today. Some great, great artists coming from this genre. Check out Jason Isbell and the band he was in many years ago, Drive-by Truckers. Outstanding. Also Black Lillies and Sarah Shook and the Disarmer are two current favorites. All still putting out great music and touring currently. Go to the SHOW!

Love your reactions to all kinds of music. This is a great song by a great band. Another band kind of like them that I really love from Canada is Blue Rodeo. Highly recommend them. Songs like “Lost Together“, “Hasn’t Hit me Yet“, “Five Days in May“, and “Bad Timing“ are all awesome

Watching someone slip away from meth is heartbreaking. To see those who beat that addiction is a thing of beauty. Been there. This song does have triggers.

I have only just discovered Whiskey Myers in the last couple of years and they are brilliant. I love songs with this sort of emotion that create a few tears. Check out a band called Soleil Moon - Goodnight Irene.

Ballad of a Southern Man should be your next song by Whiskey Meyers followed by “Stone” and “Virginia.” Need to check out some Texas country music bands like Randy Rogers Band, Cody Jinks, Aaron Watson, Eli Young Band, Josh Abbot Band, Stoney LaRue…just to name a few

This song is a great song. But their song "stone" is a legit musical master piece in my mind. Think yall would really be impressed by that song. For a different reason.

Such a great, down home sound. Love the use of the harmonica, which I think is one of the most under-used instruments, but sounds so amazing.
Watching Ambers heart break to the lyrics of the song was really powerful.
